The setting takes place in Osaka, Japan at an enormous institution for the peculiar. It houses all grades, from kindergarten to high school. However, if attending school those students in elementary school are allowed to go home each day while middle schoolers and high schoolers get dorm rooms (unless of course, a the elementary schooler doesn't have a family or home to return to). It houses anyone of uniqueness regardless of their race, gender, or where they come from. It is a place that will train the unique to become even more so. They do not hide their race, their abilities, or their powers--they use them to assist the rest of the world. This place is known as the illustrious Shotoken Academy. It is a place where the strange and wonderful can come together and become just that. It is a place that will teach you how to use your gift for good and to not squander what the rest of the world might fear.
The school is run by a man by the name of Ryu Kyosuke and his eldest daughter Akira Kyosuke. At one time the school was far from as public as it is now, but due to Kyosuke he has allowed even the average human to attend the school. His goal was to disperse the fears that anyone may have had towards it by making it more public. Since his guidance however the Shotoken Academy has become it's own country. With over 100,000 students and growing as it is a well populated area. It was all due to him that the Shotoken Academy and it's students are no longer held with fear in the common civilian's eye (although that does not mean discrimination has been completely erased). He hopes that one day the unique people he has helped and the average human will live together as one people. Of course he knows there are others who would not want as such.
There is a rival school known as the Shoujen Academy who would rather use their powers to completely dominate all things. They, unlike the Shotoken (who focuses primarily on academics and combat expertise), are souly combative and likewise frequently lead assaults against the Shotoken but never prevail. Unlike the Shotoken they are a menace to society, but constantly having Kyosuke breathing down their neck and thwarting them (usually by force) they have been rendered a minor threat as of late. Then again, the Shotoken was the school who figured out the inner soul and it's workings as well as coined the term 'inner soul'. That said, they basically paved the way for the other schools.
There are two other schools called the Biwa and the Kyokyugen however they are not nearly as active in going against the Shotoken as the Shoujen. The Biwa school is the neutral school, one of culture and healers. They are also the impassable school, they are the school with the highest defense so going against them is basically moot point. As for the Kyokyugen school, they are much like the Shoujen in that they are focused on combative strengths, however they are eternally known to fall into third place when competing against the other three schools.
Still, it's a new school year and Kyosuke as well as Akira and the school must be prepared for whatever, and whoever is to arrive.

An inner soul is a unique power that derives from the soul of the wielder. It is a power that many of the students of the Shotoken Academy possess--specifically because the Shotoken and the other schools seek out those with inner souls who are capable of activating them. This is because the schools teach students how to activate, use, and control their inner souls and the powers/abilities that come with it. Although, that doesn't mean the school is exclusively composed of inner soul wielders, they also seek out those who excel in academics and other special cases. This is mostly so that those who can activate it don't become psychopaths or otherwise menaces to society who think they can do what they want. However it does give the schools and those who attend them the common moniker of 'freak'.
Still, a better understanding of this power will allow you to become closer to your inner soul and therefore stronger. There are other forms of power but the inner soul stands among one of the most powerful in the entire universe. It is a power that Ryu Kyosuke, and many others, have been trying to understand to further itself (and themselves) alike.
The inner soul is a being inside of your soul but to better explain this think of the soul as an egg. The outer soul, or outer shell, is your soul and holds everything that you are. It holds your memories, it holds your strengths, weaknesses, fears, etc. The outer soul is everything that you are and everything you do. It is what holds in your inner soul, where your power derives from.
The inner soul is another being, generally one of historic, powerful, or impressive nature. (Ex: You are Ben. Your inner soul is Alexander the Great.) However, this is not limited to our universe or planet. An inner soul can come from any other form of life.
This inner soul however can give you impressive and powerful abilities, generally ones that they had during their time. (Ex: You can punch things. Your inner soul can fire lightning bolts from their hands.)
The connection between you and your inner soul matters however--this is part of what the schools teach. You can communicate with your inner soul by meditating on them which you then enter their realm, or the soul realm. Inside this realm is the only place you can physically see and interact with your inner soul. They CANNOT make themselves seen in the physical world (Earth) or interact with others unless you and them are in COMPLETE synchronization with each other. This means unless you and your inner soul are on the same page at all times they cannot fight beside you and may only lend you their power. Not even Kyosuke himself has mastered this, he has however mastered over-soul an ability that will be later touched on.
To perform complete synchronization however usually only happens in times of EXTREME dire need. Not even your entire family being wiped out would be enough to activate it. It also cannot be activated on terms of revenge or any other dark, or untrue reason with which your true character or your inner soul would disagree with. Also to do so your outer and inner soul must meld into what is called a perfect soul. A perfect soul is no longer an egg in sense, it is one solid mass (ex: if you scramble an egg in the shell then hard boil it). The inner and outer soul have reached such a perfect standing that you can feel and think what your inner soul does.
As for over-soul it is a technique that only Kyosuke has mastered. It is an ability that allows him to maximize the power of his outer soul putting it in a state of constant destruction and reconstruction. It gives him power that vastly overpowers most inner souls. This ability is only known by him and he has yet to teach it for it is terribly dangerous. If one were to fail the over-soul technique they would cease to exist for all eternity.
Most people in the general population of the world have an inner soul but most cannot activate it. However, there are people who don't have an inner soul at all, they are called 'hollows' because of it. That said, instead of having a layered soul, their single 'outer' soul developed around empty space that never got filled. It would be like having an egg shell with no egg filling it. The reason behind this is because their outer soul is generally too weak to contain or hold an inner soul.

"You ok little lady?" One of the ship mates asked as they tried to pat the back of the teen only to have his hand knocked away.There was a deathly moan followed by "Im a boy you jerk! and...Im...fine....!" The teen growled before hurling the rest of his stomach content off the side of the ship.At this point he was dry heaving...and there was nothing left to come outta him.He struggled to re assure the ship hand."I guess I just get sea sick..."
This was his first time on a boat after all...that he could remember anyway....but it wasnt the water that put him off...but rather the odd feeling it gave him being on this boat in the middle of the pacific...he'd been on this damned thing for days now...luckily....his destination was in sight. Japan...Even from here he could see Mt. Fuji in the distance....almost like an omen. Iris and Getoth had gone out of their way to send Gar here because they felt he had potential....but due to certain complications at the boarding house they couldnt take him under his wing...
The ship hand rubbed the back of his neck."Sorry....If youre sure your ok....we'll be arriving at the port in two hours.Might wanna make sure you got everything." The ship hand then turned around and went about his duties. Gar stumbled backward as he panted and held his stomach. He backed against the side of the ship and slid down the wall that happened to be right there. As he sat he looked to the ship hand and gave the guy a middle finger.
Soon enough they arrived at the port and Gar disembarked with his duffel bag over his shoulder.So this was Osaka....the smell in the air was different here....the energy it provided rather mysterious and filled with mystery.....it differed vastly from Gaia....Gar took a moment to fish out a hand book so he could communicate with the locals easier. Some of them could understand and speak english others couldnt.Eventually he found his way to the nearest bus station where he got a bus ticket.....to Shotoken Academy.
While on the bus he popped his head phones in to listen to music on his phone.But the music couldnt be any less soothing...the teens nerves were bad being in a new place like this....So to calm his nerves he fished out his favorite romance novel. The bus ride would take 5 hours....so he had time...he read along until he came across a quote from the book which he spoke quietly to himself. "Im no superman....but if I was...who would I be entitled to save....?" His purple eyes slid to the window of the bus as he eyed Mt. Fuji in the near distance....thinking.
Hours later he reached his stop.He searched around,getting a few more directions before speaking to a group of what seemed to be high school girls.They actually knew where the Academy was! Great! It wasnt for from where he was now...though the girls laughed and told him before they went on their way "Dont drink the water! Hehe!" Gar stood scratching his head in wonder."What? The hells wrong with the water?" He sighed before shrugging and off he went.
Then.....finally...he was here.....his mouth gaped open as he eyed the place....it was magnificent really....he stood at the front gates and gripped onto one of the steel bars as he looked to the other side in awe...

Maru was up early and as with her Lorna, the two always woke at the same time as Lorna was her inner soul. "Good morning Lorna." Maru said to seemingly no one. It was a new school year and her first year as a high school girl. She was ready for this as she was finally out of middle school which just felt great. "Ready for our first day of high school Lorna?" Maru asked her inner soul who seemed to agree. "Good, because it's time to go." She said before heading downstairs.
Maru lived with her parents, her mom and dad who were ready to see their daughter off. They gave her a hug and gave her a wad of cash that they had been saving up to see their daughter off. They also gave her the usual advise of stay out of trouble and to mind Akira. "I know mom." Maru said with a giggle as her primped her a bit. Her mom told her to find a nice boy or even a girl this year. "Yeah...I doubt that'll happen. If someone wanted a neko they'd go after one who's skinny and short. You know...like they're supposed to be." At this her mom merely smiled, rolled her eyes, and scooted her on out the door. "Bye mom, bye dad. I love you guys." Maru called out before she took off running towards the Shotoken Academy.
It only took Maru a few minutes to arrive at the school since the girl was faster than most people thought. Upon getting to the gate the girl stopped and caught her breath. She was heavier than most of her race so she couldn't do things like this for too long. Almost all neko had small frames while she was cursed she felt with a large frame. While a normal neko her height would weigh somewhere between 132 to 145 pounds while Maru weighed in at 185. She was pretty self-conscious about this and it always hurt her feelings when people brought this up. She was in Japan, land of the skinny people so it just made things worse. Maru however wasn't all that fat, she was overweight but she wasn't fat. She did try to lose that weight but it sadly didn't seem to want to shave itself off. Her large frame didn't help either.
Maru caught her breath and prepared to make her way towards the school when she heard someone talk about not drinking the water. This got Maru to giggle a little as it was a bit of a running joke about the school. "This school is notorious for breeding lesbians that's why they say not to drink the water. It can turn you gay so they say." She giggled before looking to the giant surrounding forest that the wall seemed to disappear into. "The water comes from up the mountain." She said before looking the boy over once or twice. She was starting to piece together if he was a boy or a girl.
Maru could judge character fairly well seeing as she had some very sharp eyes. She could pick out the masculine features of his face and came to the realization that he was in fact a male. "First year?" She asked as she turned to look at the school with him. The place was amazing and she loved everything about it. She loved the teachers, the building, the students, and definitely the fighting that she got to do. She had been attending the school since her kindergarten years and now she was finally a high school girl. It was almost like a dream come true. "If so. You'll like it here." She said with a smile on her face. Maru was back, and she was ready to make the most of her school year.

Gar veered his head to where those string of words originated with a slight blush across his cheeks at the notion."Wha?!"Great...people already thought he looked like a dike...guess hed fit right in.
As his gaze came to rest he saw that it was female.He noted those cute fuzzy ears of hers as well as the tail.A neko...though she was a few inches taller then him and was much more er...healthier then most of her kind that hed seen,not that there was anything wrong with that!"The water comes from up the mountain." Gar quirked a brow before swiveling his head to eye the Mountain one more time. He sighed. He then replied,though Maru would still have trouble distinguishing if this person was a boy or a girl because even Gar's voice had a raspy feminine quality."Thanks...Im superstitious...so..now im paranoid...."
He expressed with a half hearted smile.His head looked to the Academy once more before the neko girl asked "First year? If so. You'll like it here."" Gar leaned against the gate and nodded."Y-Yea.....I came a long way from home.....and here I am.....it feels so weird,being in a new place like this."
Gar had gotten used to living at the boarding house and it was what he called home for while....and once you dub somewhere home....no other place compares.His beautiful purple eyes slid to the side for a moment.There was a sense of nervousness and anxiety dwelling inside him at the moment....what if he wasnt cut out for this? What if he ended up disappointing Iris and Getoth after they worked so hard to help him out?No....no,he wouldnt let such thoughts get to him...he'd go with the flow no matter what....
Returning his attention to the neko girl he responded."My names Gar by the way......some people call me Bambi....stupid nick name,I know....uhm....are you a local? Like....do you live around here?"
Maru was looking at the school when he spoke up. He was from far away but he wasn't alone in that. Many people came from all over the world to attend the Shotoken Academy. "It's not such a bad place, you'll get used to it." She said with a smile. She was sure there were going to be a good amount of people from his own hometown here in the academy. With some odd 100,000 students this place was always swimming with diversity. From feminine boys to stocky neko. If you couldn't find the race at the Shotoken Academy it likely only ever existed in your head. There were races here that people only thought were something right out of a fairy tale.
Maru gave a very light giggle when he informed her of his nickname. She honestly didn't understand the nickname either. He looked nothing like a baby deer. Now maybe if he was a super feminine satyr that would have been a different story. "Oh right, my name is Maru and yes I'm from around here. I've been living in Osaka since I was a little girl and have been attending this school since kindergarten. I guess you can say this school is my home." She said with a very small smile on her face. She was always happy to return to school as the people here were more accepting then the people in Osaka itself. She couldn't tell someone how many times some Japanese schoolgirl had mooed at her or oinked.
"The principal's name is Akira Kyosuke and she's not someone to mess with...ever...She can produce heats hotter than the sun itself and is also strong enough to fling tanks like they were made of tinfoil. I've seen it happen." She said with a small giggle. "Don't worry though, she's real nice. She should be coming out soon to wish everyone a happy new school year. Then she'll likely give her inner soul spiel again." Maru said with a nod of her head. She was a girl who normally liked to remain quiet and in the background but she felt this guy needed a bit of help at the moment. Although Maru didn't like to talk all that much she felt sometimes she just had to.
The neko's ears twitched a few times and she turned her head back to see a few other students walking by. They weren't in uniform but she could tell by the wild look in their eyes that they weren't Shotoken. "I'll be seeing them later I'm sure..." She whispered to herself. The students were Shoujen as they were making their way to the direction she knew the Shoujen Academy was. Maru didn't feel like she should spook this new guy with horror stories about them though. She would much rather just pretend like they didn't exist at all. Sadly she knew that wouldn't be very long lived as the Shoujen liked to attack the Shotoken and on a rather regular basis.
"So uhm...what year are you going in for? This is my first year as a high school girl. It's got me pretty excited." She said in hopes of getting the sight of the Shoujen students out of her mind. "I'm going to show everyone what I'm really made of, me and Lorna both." She said with a small nod of her head. Maru was definitely ready to show everyone what she and her inner soul were made of.

"It's not such a bad place, you'll get used to it." Gar shrugged."I dont think I have much of a choice now..." Gar had no money to get back so even if he decided to back out right now there was no going back to gaia and instead hed be living on the streets...though from the bit that Getoth told him about this academy he'd be fed and housed as long as he worked hard and was respectful...Gar would see how long that would last. But at least he was optimistic.
"Oh right, my name is Maru and yes I'm from around here." Maru, it was a nice name for someone like her. Simple yet modest....psh...it certainly beat his name "Gar" which meant nothing more then a gnarly fish! Though Gar wasnt even his real name...truth be told he didnt know his real name....he had amnesia so he was lacking in memories. It was a terrible cliche...
Maru informed him that she had been living in Osaka since she was little and she apparently had been attending this school since kindergarten. Eeesh.....Gar could only imagine the teachers that had to put up with suped up brats! "I guess you can say this school is my home." Maru said with a smile.But then she brought up the principal whos name was Akira Kyosuke and he was informed to not toy with her...Hell...the name Akira was intimidating by itself....

Though it seemed like a few passing students caught Maru's eye for a moment.She mumbled something under her breath but Gar wasnt able to catch it.Did those students go here?No....maybe? They seemed a little rambunctious..."So uhm...what year are you going in for?" Gar rubbed the back of his head before pushing off the gate."Im the fresh meat." Meaning this would be his first year ever attending and hed be a freshman.
Maru seemed to share some rather uppity enthusiasm which was actually admirable!"I'm going to show everyone what I'm really made of, me and Lorna both." Gar adjusted the duffel bag on his shoulder before asking. "Is this Lorna your sister? Or friend?"
Maru turned her head a little to him to listen. He was a freshman just like her. Maru knew that the freshman had to stick together otherwise their upperclassmen would have a field day on them. "Then we're in this together." She stated as she gave a slight flick of her tail. Her eyes turned upwards for a moment before she looked back to the school. "We should go and file in soon with the rest of the crowd. Akira will be here soon." She said as she started moving forward. She was going to make sure she heard Akira although she could likely recite everything the woman said on the first day word by word by this point. Akira wasn't out yet however so there was still some time for them to get to know each other a little.
As Maru advanced she turned her head back to Gar to speak. "Oh no. Lorna is my inner soul." She stated with a small smile. "I can try and explain it if you want me to but Akira would probably do a much better job at it." She said before turning to look back at the slowly massing crowd. It was still a bit early but she knew school would start in a couple of hours at least. "I would show her to you but I'm not all that good at materializing her just yet. I need some more practice." Maru said. She was trying her hardest to try and make conversation as this really wasn't her forte at all. Her forte was being the best on the archery team as she was the girl who helped her team win in the archery contest against the three other schools last year.
Maru moved forward to join the rest of the growing crowd and she was going to see if she could make her way towards the front of it all. She had a feeling that it was going to be more difficult then she first thought. There were more students here then she had expected and the body count was sort of overwhelming.
