Superman's secluded headquarters in the heart of the Arctic.

The original Silver Age Fortress, first appearing in 1958, was located in the Arctic and built into the side of a steep cliff. The Fortress was accessible through a large gold-colored door with a giant keyhole, which required an enormous key to open it. The arrow-shaped key was so large that only Superman (or another Kryptonian such as Supergirl) could lift it; when not in use, the key sat on a perch outside of the Fortress, where it appeared to be an aircraft path marker.

The Fortress contained an alien zoo, a giant steel diary in which Superman wrote his memoirs (using either his invulnerable finger or heat vision to engrave entries into its pages), a chess-playing robot, specialized exercise equipment, a laboratory where Superman worked on various projects such as developing defenses to Kryptonite, a computer, communications equipment, and rooms dedicated to all of his friends, including one for Clark Kent to fool visitors. As the stories continued, it was revealed that the Fortress was where Superman's robot duplicates were stored. It also contained the Phantom Zone projector, various pieces of alien technology he had acquired on visits to other worlds, and, much like the Batcave, trophies of his past adventures. Indeed, the Batcave and Batman himself made an appearance in the first Fortress story. The Fortress also became the home of the bottle city of Kandor (until it was enlarged), and an apartment in the Fortress was set aside for Supergirl.

A detailed description of the Fortress and its contents forms the background to DC Special Series #26 (1981); Superman and his Incredible Fortress of Solitude, in which Superman minutely inspects the Fortress, suspecting an enemy has planted an Earth-destroying bomb within it. Another noteworthy appearance of this version of the Fortress was in 1985's Superman Annual #11, a story by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons titled "For the Man Who Has Everything", in which it served as a battleground for Superman, Batman, Robin, and Wonder Woman against the alien would-be overlord Mongul. This story was adapted to animation in the Justice League Unlimited series.

The design is based off the Superman Films of the 70s and 80s featuring Christopher Reeve.

User ImageThe sun still shone over the icy Arctic plane. Even though local time was actually 8 p.m., the sun didn't set during this season. Sunlight was caught and refracted within the unique crisscrossed crystalline structure that formed the Fortress of Solitude. Inside the hardened crystal structure, prismatic rays were reflected and directed to a single point -- a crystal chamber that contained a single figure laying on deeply reclined crystal chair.

Once the rays stopped, an audible deep hum could be heard echoing within. Nearby, flecks of tiny sparkling crystal heralded the approach of a ghostly figure that began to focus into crystal clarity. The translucent robed figure had a rugged handsome face with striking features, yet snowy white hair that seemed to show stately steel wisdom.

In regarding the humming chamber, the shade's eyebrows moved upward a fraction and his features softened. A rich baritone voice echoed softly, "Kal-El... Kal-El, it is time for you to awaken, my son. There is much to do."

Calmly, Jor-El awaited for his son to arise and address him.

And slowly but surely Kal-El awoke . . . his eyes opening. How long had he been asleep? The world seemed okay when he went under. However, what was going on?

"Father, what happened while I was asleep?" he asked, groggily getting up from his chambers . . . while it sounded like this was a mere mortal father and son, this was no mere mortal awakening in the land of the Midnight Sun.

User ImageAfter Jol-El had taken a more or less solid form before Kal-El, the spirit of the elder Kryptonian addressed his son again, "You have missed much, my son. Are you aware that there has been a merging of two universes? I am uncertain what has caused this event, but it does appear to involve a being of unimaginable power. Since the event, this being seems to have made a few appearances -- but now has vanished into the shadows once more."

With a wave, Jor-El displays images of this being known as 'X' wrecking destruction on several locations. The last notable attack was X's destruction of Titans Tower. Jor-El continued, "Most of the two worlds had been cloaked and frozen in darkness, until... a tyrant of high ambition and power rolled back the darkness."

Images changed to show the armored form of Dr. Doom with his forces taking over Europe, "This dictator actually stabilized the land; however, moved in with his machines of war to take a large portion of this world and solidify his position -- while most of the heroes are missing and can not stop him. Other heroes and villains have been appearing and fighting -- spreading more chaos."

More images fade into view displaying conflicts in Gotham, New York, Central City, large and small. This ends with images of a battle in the Nevada desert between secret military forces with heroes weighing in. Kal-El would note Konner in the fight against IO -- culminating in IO defeat and the exposure of the dead teens that IO experimented on.

"Dark shadows move once again threatening to engulf the light of hope and justice -- swallowing it in despair. It will be up to you, my son, to show them that light once more."

Kal-El looked intently as he woke further, watching as Jor-El spoke. "Indeed a fair bit has happened since I was asleep." Kal-El mentioned as he rose to his feet. "Although I'm not sure I can do it alone, father. Where's Bruce? He told me before I came here he would keep an eye on things. Perhaps he could give me the lay of the land until we can get a plan in motion." he mentioned.

User ImageThe spirit of Jor-El seemed to arch an eyebrow, turning his head in his son's direction. The expression almost seemed to say 'Really?' After glancing in Kal-El's direction, Jor-El turns back toward the images which immediately presents numerous images of Gotham City, "So, Bruce Wayne may have more useful information on this merging of universes. Logical. Your vigilante friend does keep a close eye on what happens on Earth..."

As multiple overhead city images zoom in, scanning different location within Gotham. Jor-El's dark eyes narrow thoughtfully in concentration -- but unable to find the Batman. Just as Jor-El was about to check other locations such as the Watchtower in orbit, a blip appeared on the overhead image of the docks. Moving all other images aside, the sole remaining overhead image was the docks of Gotham. Thermal imaging picked up a faint trail of a motorboat engine that was unique on the planet -- the engine of the famed BatBoat. Both father and son watched this boat quickly skulk off one of the piers and stealthfully maneuver underneath one of them.

Thermal imaging did pick up four humans in the boat, as it sat there. Jor-El turns back toward Superman, "With as closely guarded as the Batman is, I would say he would be at the helm of that craft."

"Forgive me, father. It's an Earth Expression." Kal-El replied embarrassed before listening. "Then I think I should start there. He never lets anyone use that boat, father. At least not for just a minute reason." he said as he got to his feet. "Please keep the fortress safe while I'm gone, father. And don't wait up for me!" he said before opening the door to the polar sunshine. I LOVE this planet! he thought before taking a running start and WHOOSH! Up into the air he went!

User ImageThe spirit of Jor-El watched his son fly out of the Fortress of Solitude with a slight smile on his face, "Be well, my son. My thoughts and hope goes with you." And with that, Jor-El fades from sight at rest once more...

(I know you forgot to put this Swamp, so....)
