Vanya tore at the carcass. He'd found the chewed up deer stashed in the branches of a tree but not securely enough to keep him from shaking it down. Mama Proserpina had been giving him hunting lessons but he wasn't good enough yet to catch much on his own. Even the little mice were mostly too fast for him. His paws were large and ungainly, still out of proportion to his foal stature. Mama Proserpina said he'd grow into him. Maybe he'd grow into hunting too.
He tore off bits of flesh and awkwardly chewed them. He'd always had trouble chewing. Most soquili had a face. He didn't. He didn't have lips, or cheeks, or eyes on his face he could see out of. He was glad he had ears, at least. He could hear even if he could barely taste. Seeing though, seeing was no problem. His whole body was covered in eyes. This sort of 360 degree vision was normal to him. He sometimes wondered what it was like for soquili with only two eyes. He thought it must be annoying, but then again, they could eat properly.
Food was always falling out of his mouth. If he wanted to swallow then he had to toss his head back like a bird and let gravity bring the food to his throat. It was hard to get just right and he'd almost choked a few times. Eating wasn't much fun at all.
