THE EXAM: HOUSE OF HORRORS (Y1 > Y2)

Each student ready to move from the first year to the second would find a nice, neatly printed letter taped to their door inviting them to participate in a "Non-Mandatory-But-Highly-Recommended-Anyway Test" (or NMBHRAT for short). A location was provided at the bottom of the note (a section of the grounds, just near the forest), and beneath that the words "Come at anytime."

Upon arrival, you would first notice that a peculiar house has been erected. It's not large enough to overshadow any of the dorms by any means; in fact, it seems rather tiny and shabby in comparison, with the door half stripped of its paint, the windows cracked and smeared with dust, and everything looks as though the merest touch will make it collapse.

At first you wonder if you're in the right place at all, but then you notice a little box sitting just outside of the house. Closer examination would reveal a note, written in a loopy handwriting perhaps familiar to some:

Welcome welcome to the House
Please be quiet as a mouse
The House will tell if you are good
The House will tell if you are bad

Think you're up to face the thing?
If you pass it, all will sing
Do your best, oh fair student
I hope your deaths you do circumvent

THE EXAM

THE HOUSE OF HORRORS

The smell is what gets your attention first; like smoke and old wood, it wafts across the air towards you, enticing you onward, pulling you forward, and you reach the little shabby house and the door half hanging off its hinges, practically begging you to come inside.

A sign posted outside reads "Welcome to the House."

At first, you're mildly concerned but upon knocking stepping inside, you realize that the house in question appears deserted.

Well, that's just creepy. But trying to go backwards only results in failure - the door has locked behind you. You're trapped inside, and now you must figure out how to get through the house in order to continue on your quest.

TO GET THROUGH THE HOUSE:

There are THREE MAJOR ROOMS to the House of Horrors. In order to successfully pass through the House and receive your exam credit, you must navigate through all three rooms until you reach the exit, located after the very last room:

• Cutthroat Kitchen
  
  To get through the Cutthroat Kitchen, you need 10 steps. Roll 1d4 and add up the amount of steps you take (i.e. you roll a 3, that's 3 steps forward). You must get at least 10 steps. If you go over ten, that's fine, as long as it's at least 10.
  
  Each number of steps rolled has it's own consequence:
  1 - You open a door in the kitchen looking for the exit and promptly find yourself dunked by a bucket of icy water. Who left that there?
  2 - You trip and fall into a vat of what looks like melted chocolate.
  3 - You step in a pile of what looks like sticky glue on the floor and therefore get it stuck on the bottom of your foot/shoe for the rest of your trek through the House.
  4 - For some reason, there is an entire bin of tiny bones that you somehow manage to knock over, which, of course, makes a terribly loud sound.
  
  
  
• Lurking Library
  
  In order to get through the Library, you'll have to find the right combination of books in order to find the combination. Roll 3d6, and follow the guidelines below:
  
  - 1,1 OR 2,2 as two of the numbers - Looks like you've found some sort of...oops better put that back quickly before a certain cranky Librarian sees you looking at por - (try again)
  - 3,3 OR 4,4 OR 5,5 OR 6,6 as two of the numbers - You pull out a book, and then another, and to your relief you see that the door beyond swings open for you to slip through! (success)
  - 1,2,3 (doesn't have to be in order) - Somehow you get entangled in what looks like a long rope made of paper and spend several moments trying to break your way free, when you notice that in the process you've actually fallen out the door into the next room. How convenient! (success)
  - 6,6,6 Is that a giant spi - quick run for it - (start back in the first room)
  - 1,1,1 You try climbing a bookshelf, rather than pull books trying to find the secret switch, and wind up tumbling over the side rather ungracefully. But hey, look, the...nope, just a shadow (try again)
  
  
  
• Bloodcurdling Bedroom
  
  The Bloodcurdling Bedroom requires only one thing - picking the lock successfully to get through the door on the other side. Roll 1d100. You must get above a 65 to have successfully picked the lock. If you roll below, then your attempts were unsuccessful and you have to keep on truckin'.

Upon their exit from the house, a certain mischievous Trick or Treater can be found lounging in a tree on the other side, looking as happy as a pig in mud. He smiles down at you, his grin terribly self-satisfied, and tosses you a rolled up piece of parchment. Opening it, you see a certificate of Exam Completion.

"Congratulations," he says brightly, and flashes you a wink. "You're now a Knob."

So the day had finally come. All his "hard work" and "studying" was finally going to pay off. To be honest Sidron had pretty much just flown right through most of the classes and homework and didn't take it all that seriously. It was all for going from being a first year to a second. No one really took it seriously he was sure.

Although he did had to admit he had learned a thing or two here and there. But mostly about himself. And an occasional tid bit about other things he was sure he could recall at some unintended time when the topic would come up.

He hadn't expected the invitation so soon but there it was. An unassuming note that had been taped to the door of his dorm. At first he thought maybe it was a note from Amy but upon opening it and reading it that thought was quickly banished. Sidron hurried into his room to change his clothes to something a bit more comfortable before he headed out to the specified location. There was no time that he had to be there of course but he wanted to get it done and over with so he could relax a bit.

His had a quick pace most of the way there until the house in the forest started to come into view. Sidron's approach slowed as he got closer and closer. The house looked like if you just breathed in it's direction it would topple right over. It gave him pause of course, being fairly large one wrong move and he could have an entire house come down on his head.

As he approached the door who's paint looked like it was almost gone Sidron began to wonder if he was even in the right place. He stopped mid turn as a box on the step caught his attention. Examining it further revealed an odd note that made...maybe a little sense? Sidron moved closer to the door, the smell of smoke fills his nostrils. Its a scent he's used to. Was that a hint of wood too?

The door creaked loudly as he stepped through. When he turned to look behind him the door was closed and locked. Well, he wasn't here to chicken out anyway. Onward through the house.

The first room he entered looked to be a kitchen of sorts. Although it was quite abandoned and cob webs were everywhere. Unless that was just the way whoever lived, or lives, here wanted it. Taking a few steps further into the kitchen he got a sticky sensation on the bottom of his foot. Apparently there was still some sort of sticky glue on the floor. Now that was going to be annoying to deal with. No matter how hard he tried his foot kept sticking to the floor as he moved about.

Thhbtt. Thhbbttt. Thhbbtt.

Every step Sidron took now was a complete and utter annoyance. He had tried rubbing a bit of spit on the sticky spot of his foot but to no avail the glue just wouldn't come off. And for it being such a run down place there were no piles of dirt he could drag his foot through to at least coat the sticky spot with so it wouldn't stick to the floor.

He'd have to make a trip to the store and get some goo gone if this sticky foot issue didn't let up any time soon. The feeling of the skin on the bottom of his foot sticking to the floor and lightly stretching when he took a step was really distracting. So much so that he didn't notice the rather large vat sitting in his path until it was too late. He ran smack dab into it and lurched forward, catching himself on the rim of the vat but not before his head submerged in some kind of thick liquid. Quickly reeling back, he gasped trying to wipe away the thick coating that clung to his face and hair. Some of it ran into his mouth and he blinked in surprise.

It was......chocolate?

Who the hell would leave a vat of melted chocolate in here?

Chocolate was still dripping into his eyes and mouth. And he was pretty sure there was some in his ears. As he moved to find a sink his foot stuck to the floor really well this time, probably from the added spilled chocolate, which sent him tumbling into another vat.

That was filled with even more chocolate.

This time it wasn't his head but his right arm all the way up to his shoulder that went in as he caught himself. Great, he was going to be a chocolate covered dragon by the time he got out of here. He would have to make sure to take a shower before he ran into Amy. While his ghoulfriend hadn't attempted to eat him he didn't want anything that might lead her to believe that there was an open door to some painful nibbling.

Alright this was getting ridiculous. All these vats of melted chocolate were just out to get him today. Thankfully there was no one else around that he knew of that could laugh at how dumb he looked covered almost head to toe with chocolate.

Finally. Finally he spotted what looked like the kitchen ext. He would get out of here and leave the horrible experience of melted chocolate vats behind him. There was an almost glibness to his gate as he reached the door, turning the handle and yanking it open only to find himself instantly doused in cold, icy water that had been placed at the top of the door to soak whatever unfortunate person who opened the door to leave.

Well, at least he wouldn't need to take a long shower as most of the chocolate was washed away. Sadly it did nothing for his sticky foot.

Steps: 10

1 - You open a door in the kitchen looking for the exit and promptly find yourself dunked by a bucket of icy water. Who left that there?

The next room he stepped into looked to be a library. There were books as far as the eye could see. Shoved in shelves that reached the roof and settled in tall, towering stacks a top of tables.

This room was going to be Sidron's favorite. It was quite difficult to stop himself from browsing all the books. But he knew he had to continue on. Being stuck in this house, no matter how enticing the library was, was not something he wanted.

There didn't appear to be any doors besides the one he came from and it was locked behind him. So for a moment Sidron had to ponder before he got an idea. It was pretty simple and he remembered reading about the trick.

He pulled on a few books but there seemed to be no change in the room what so ever.

Ok, the first few books were probably just the wrong ones. Sidron wasn't about to give up on the idea. It was plausible if whoever created this house was smart enough to think of the whole books thing in the first place.

After a few more tries a door suddenly swung open on the other side of the room. Had it always been there? Well no time to ponder that. Sidron quickly made his way through the door and into the next room.

This next room seemed relatively unremarkable. The door on the other side of the bedroom was right there. He quickly strode across the floor to the opposite door and grabbed the door knob. Giving it a quick couple of tugs. Apparently this one was locked as well.

With a lock. How droll.

Luckily he had rather long claws so Sidron used his to pick the lock. And it was rather easy to say the least. There had been little resistance and he was quite unsure if that was really truly it until he found himself back outside.

The sound of rustling leaves in a nearby tree caught his attention as did the figure sitting in the tree with a rather pleased look on his face. A scroll of paper was tossed at him and Sidron unrolled it to find a certificate of exam completion.

"Thanks..." Was all he could respond with as he began to make his way back towards the Monster dorms. That was really quite uneventful.
