So with Fates out, even if you buy both versions or bought the special edition, sides will still be taken. You have to pick which side to play first if you're not first picking one side exclusively to begin with.
So who picked Nohr and who picked Hoshido?
Anyone who knows me could probably predict my picking Conquest and Nohr.
-Higher difficulty -Greater variety of objectives -No grinding -Limited resources -Dark>Light
Basically it's a classic FE game, with all the things that make an FE more enjoyable for me! And it's been SO fun so far. Starting on Hard Classic, as I always start on, and it's been extremely fun so far. Plot is garbage, but after Awakening, who expected any different?
And while I'd be picking Nohr simply because it has better gameplay regradless, the people who raise you are your true family in my mind, anyway, so if I were in that position, I'd probably go Nohr too.

Funny, I heard that Nohr has better storyplot because it has more drama and dark than Birthright. >.>;
Anyway, starting Birthright because I need something casual to play after all the drama going on in my RL. Will play Conquest later on, but I don't want to deal with frustration.
However, I will admit before choosing sides, I was tempting to choose Revelation just to say, "Screw you! I'm going MY path!," but the warning says it's recommend to choose either Nohr or Hoshido or both since it contains more depth of what's going on.

Funny enough as much as I like the classic style I keep hearing about in Conquest, I started Birthright as my first playthrough solely because I made Aruna as my avatar. She fits more into Hoshido's lore than Nohr's.

I went with Birthquest. Or maybe Conright.
Doesn't matter. I started both and stopped at chapter 9 on both because I'm not in a rush to get anywhere.

I went Nohr first for almost all the reasons FD listed. I was hesitant about some of the characters at first, but they've grown on me, so far. Except Peri... decent enough character, but her design (and this may be an unpopular opinion) looks like the most "OC plz do not steal" design I've ever seen. She looks like somebody put the head of a hipster art student onto a suit of armor. I ******** hate it so much.
I was also very concerned at first because the initial choice of what side to pick was like.... uh... Hoshido are clearly the morally correct choice to make here. The Nohr side isn't doing much to make me want to choose them except to purposefully be bad, but that doesn't fit Corrin's character, so choosing Nohr seems really bizarre. However, as I've continued, the route has gotten more things going on with it that make me think "okay, you know what, this is okay. This is a reason to keep going and do what I'm doing". Because Garon is obviously evil, the game doesn't hide that, but it's usng that in a way to compel Corrin forward in what I consider at least somewhat justifiable.

In the last few years I have become an FE fan reborn. I blame Thracia 776 for being so damn good and inspiring. So choosing Conquest and starting on classic hard was a no-brainer for me. I've been having a grand old time with the gameplay and map variety. Conquest has made me realize what I like in FE maps: tough, but never to the point where you don't have any more strategies up your sleeve or things you can change in your strategy. Plus plenty of map designs with new things thrown at me to use and fight against. New toys to play with is icing on the cake.
As for the plot, yeah, it's not the best and I imagined a way cooler scenario than I have gotten as of writing this. But I can't call it a total loss because I am thankful that
-gasp-
THE GAME HOLDS YOU ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR CHOICE! I hope I never get tired of the Hoshido sibs acting sad and betrayed at me. Mmmmm, taste that disappointment. Can't wait for the Nohr sibs to be the same way in birthright, I hope it hurts more since I'd have been through Conquest by then.
I actually heard from a few people that the Birthright plot is better, but we'll see. It would probably be more straightforward, but to avoid spoilers I won't say why I'd think that would be a good thing.

To be fair, if there was no recommendation of choosing side first, I would have chosen Revelation as Corrin's choice after seeing Corrin's backgrounds from the chapter. I agree with FD that Corrin was raised by the Nohr despite not being blood related, but I also see that Corrin is barely regained memories from the Hoshido past, as well as expressing the feeling toward Queen Mikoto. In other words, Corrin views both sides as family, despite being blood related or having relationship daily. Yes, Garon is evil, but Corrin also wants both sides to be at peace with each other as well as having no blood shed on war. Ergo, I feel that Revelation would be Corrin's choice since Corrin cares both sides. I'm aware that it's my opinion and I have nothing against anyone choosing side of what would be "the right choice." But I do like to point out that whatever choice the player choses is hypothetical since the Japanese title is called If, as in "What if."

For those who think Nohr contains the darker plotline, you might be surprised.
This layout they have reminds me of a Japanese visual novel where you have to play though all the different endings until you unlock the one true ending "aka Revelation"

It's been said time and time again in the chat but I obviously went Birthright because I like the freedom and customizing options that Gaiden/SS/Awakening give you on top of the fact that Birthright Hard actually has some tricky chapters, especially when it decides to take off limiters to go after you. It's a good balance of freedom and difficulty if you don't decide to just use that freedom to just rip the roof off.
I'm hesitant to play Nohr because nothing about the country itself is appealing to me and while I do understand that the writing of Birthright might be skewed for favor Hoshido, that opinion was finalized for me the moment chapter 6 came along but with what some people like Rath are saying I'll give it a college try.

It's a good balance of freedom and difficulty if you don't decide to just use that freedom to just rip the roof off. I sincerely hope this is the case for when I eventually get around to Birthright, because Classic/Hard Conquest has set the bar very high, and Conquest was sold as the gameplay-oriented version of the two. Chapter 10 of Conquest in particular has been one of THE best Fire Emblem experiences I've had in a very long time. New best Siege chapter in the series for me.

Chapter 10 of Conquest in particular has been one of THE best Fire Emblem experiences I've had in a very long time. New best Siege chapter in the series for me. I can't say much in terms for Conquest but there's been a few combinations that are legitimately engaging, such as one chapter that incorporated environmental hazards, an escape condition, confined room to work with while escaping from a horde of enemies that can only be remedied with reducing your own movement speed. The Hard Mode modifier is that you have a promoted unit and his posse move from their positions to hunt you down, this being a unit whose stats are actually slightly nerfed compared to their endgame encounter. I had been abusing some grinding opportunities at that point and tried to finish the chapter by taking them on. I ended up with just MU left and decided that wasn't the best course of action, quickly. Reminds me of a situation in FE4, one that I can't specifically remember off the top of my head. It can be easily cheesed, but if you tackle it legitimately it was definitely a satisfying addition without being too frustratingly hard. Incorporating Dragon Veils has been one of the better additions of this new installment.

Nohr, I'm predictable. Also Peri's design is great it looks like one of those evil anime smiles where the face is darkened you can see only one eye and the smile is huge. Creepy children <=== Edited due to stretching the page.

Peri's design would be 10x better if a different color was chosen for her hair.
That design works for other things. Like creepy anime bullshit. When you put it on a cavalier in Fire Emblem, it falls apart. There are examples of how 2 hair colors can look nice on an FE character. Peri is not one of them.

Uh, I guess I wasn't expecting to be the only one, but I picked Birthright to play first because I am a dirty weeb.
Also, I couldn't bring myself to support King Garon the first time around and fight against a nation that, as best I can tell, hasn't actually done anything wrong.

I definitely prefer birthright. The story felt so much more correct... Conquest felt very boring to me because the whole game felt to me that Corrin was confused on what he even wanted. If the main character doesn't even know what he wants, I just can't enjoy the game. Honestly I am not a big fan of Corrin at all.... The game would have worked better with a character who was more... Sure of things.
Plus in conquest, how he always begged his siblings not to kill people started getting on my nerves. The dramatic effect of that can only last so long.
In other words, I'm not a fan of Conquest... At all.
I like to believe that Severa, Inigo and Owain only joined Nohr to stop risen before they became a huge problem for their future.
