Nell took the headphones off her head and set them back beneath the sampler. "Is it just me, or is music getting shittier all the time," she asked. "Mom says I'm too young to think that, but..." She dropped the CD case back into its spot. Stone Temple whatever, that's what it was.

Of course, Carson was off in the 80s hair metal section, or something. Nell sauntered over to him, three separate albums (all fancy for-show vinyls) tucked under her arm. "Whatcha lookin' at?"

"Twisted Sister," replied Carson, holding up a shrinkwrap-wrapped CD. "I lost my copy when my car got blown up." It had been a beauty of early 2000s automobile construction, complete with a five-disk changer. But all that was ruined now. He put the disk back into the rack.

"I don't have a CD player anymore," he shrugged, eying the vinyl Nell had tucked under her arm. Of course she was into that. Of course. Momma, don't let your babies grow up to be hipsters.

"You ready to go check out?" he asked. "Are those vintage, or fancy new releases?"

Was that a Taylor Swift album he spied?

"Fancy new releases," said Nell, rolling her eyes. "I'm not, like, a hipster or anything." She headed up to the checkout, her wedges clicking on the impersonal tile flooring. "Besides, everything before the mid-nineties is a crock. I brought all the musical talent with me when I was born."

She put her albums up on the register and fished out her card. "Anyway, Mom wants to know if you booked your flight to California? She says to fly through SFO, since that's where they'll be." Nell hated hotel holidays, but they did tend to happen around re-election years.

Carson groaned. "For Easter?" he asked. Holidays, and his failure to attend family celebrations relevant to them, were a constant source of contention. He missed his mother, but seeing her wasn't worth putting up with all the associated bullshit. "I told her I wasn't going, like, six times."

I'm an adult, he thought defensively. She can't make me. And besides, he didn't see anyone trying to force Marcus to go to anything - granted, Marcus was older, and had been estranged for far longer, and maybe they'd just given up. But Carson was still amenable to phone calls and liked spending time with Nell and he supposed that translated to there being hope for him?

Not while Jenn and Luke were still a package deal, though.

"She knows not to take it personally, right?" he asked. "I'm just... uncomfortable with all the political stuff. I'll just be a prop for Dad. Oh, this is my son, the war hero. Carson, tell everyone how you were wounded in action serving our great nation. He might be out of the big dance, but that doesn't mean he hasn't got spin to work."

Nell frowned. "Mom said that you're coming this time, because she hasn't seen you in years and she wants to make sure you're really you and not a pod person body-snatcher stealing her son's name. And anyway, it's not like you can't play hooky if you want to."

She thanked the cashier and led the way out of the store, shoulders rigid. "But no! Sure, Mom's just fine with you never wanting to see her. It's not like you live in the actual, literal crime capital of the country or anything, a place where people wind up in weird comas by the dozens every night, I mean, <********>" Why was he so okay with leaving Nell to the wolves? They'd talked about this. If it was just her, then... Nell tucked her chin into the collar of her winter coat and shoved her hands in her pockets. "S'not like there's whole task forces dedicated to crazy cosplaying gangsters. Why do you hate our parents so much, anyway? You said you'd tell me and then you never did."

This was not an argument he was likely to win, Carson realized, and sighed in frustration. He wanted to skip family gatherings until the end of time, but getting Jenn to visit Destiny City was even less likely than getting him to visit Jenn.

Honestly, he wasn't sure how Nell had been allowed to come to school here. He knew all about it being dangerous, of course... but he wasn't going to tell Nell that. The less she knew, the better, as if ignorance could somehow protect her. "Tell her I'll get my tickets this week," he said, "And I want my own hotel room."

He followed her out, zipping his jacket and adjusting his scarf against the cold. Winter had hit late, but now it was here with a vengeance.

"I don't hate Mom," he corrected quickly. Let it never be said that he wouldn't die on a field for Jenn Lawson, because he would. "Just Dad."

As for the reasons why, well, he had a feeling that Nell was getting dangerously close to uncovering those on her own. "Okay," said Carson. "Fine. But I can't talk about this here. Somewhere private - let's go back to my place."

"Aw, no sleepovers," said Nell, but it was a half-hearted ribbing rather than anything actually funny. She slanted a glance at Carson, alarm in her blue-eyed gaze, before she shrugged. "Okay. You want a cab, or?..."

They walked it, which was fine by Nell, except the silence was so tense. She worried her lower lip with her teeth until it started to hurt, and then she was just... quiet.

Once they were safely ensconced in Carson's teensy-tiny efficiency apartment, Nell shucked her coat and her boots and flopped onto his bed. "Okay," she said. "Now dish." It couldn't possibly be as serious as he was making it out to be.

Nell was awfully enthusiastic about the prospect of finding out something that was probably going to ruin her life for the foreseeable future. Carson looked over his shoulder at her as he hung up his jacket. "At least try to take this seriously," he said. He knew she was just being Nell, and that the chipper tone was probably just her way of hiding genuine concern... but he still didn't like the idea that she wasn't taking this seriously.

Or worse, that she wouldn't believe him.

"That thing with your friend," he said. "That's hardly the first teenaged boy Dad's ********. Won't be the last one, either. They'll be less accessible when you're not bringing them around to hang out, when they're not living under his roof, but he'll find them."

"I bet it was a nice change for him," he added. "Having someone who went willingly. Having someone he didn't have to threaten."

Hopefully Nell could figure it out just from that. He didn't really want to spell it out for her.

Nell frowned. She was taking it seriously, just... if she went into this all solemn like her entire life hung in the balance, she'd just get depressed. It would be like getting hyped up for a role before she knew she had it--that pain was all too familiar--and Nell didn't truck with that sort of nonsense. She rolled onto her stomach and pillowed her chin in both hands. "Okay, serious mode on," she said. Which was also a joke. s**t, she sucked at this.

The thing with her friend was old news, wasn't it? It had happened, like, a year ago. Why was Carson bringing it up? Why was he...

Nell blinked, slowly, and then she crossed her arms beneath her, looked away because what. What? What? She opened her mouth to say something, anything, because what good were all of those comportment classes if she couldn't make it work for her now, but nothing came to mind and nothing came out. She shut her mouth and dug her nails into the soft meat of her biceps. "He... with you?"

It couldn't be. Carson had to be lying, didn't he? Her dad was a skeeze, but he wasn't like that. He wouldn't hurt a child. Nell couldn't believe that, she wouldn't believe that. Luke Rodham was an a*****e, a terrible person with the politics of sewer mold, but he wasn't a child molester.

But Carson had never lied to her, and Nell had seen her dad's type with her own eyes.

"Does Mom know," she asked, staring over at her boots like they could take her someplace else.

At Nell's first question, Carson nodded wordlessly, his mouth pressed into a firm line. She looked hurt enough - he didn't want to supply more specifics, the how did it happen or the how old were you. Those would only make it worse.

He answered her second question much more quickly and concretely: "Of course she doesn't." Carson was old enough now to have a decent idea of what Jenn would do if she ever found out, but old habits were hard to break. When you'd been quiet for so long, it was difficult to want to speak up, and even if he could...

Their father was too high-profile. Carson didn't want his victimhood to be so public.

"Marcus knows," he added. "He's the only one. And you now." Not even Elke knew this much. She knew there was trauma, knew that he'd been hurt - but not the where and the when and the who.

Here was something to be pissed about. "She would have killed him," said Nell. "Why wouldn't you tell her? You'd tell Marcus, who didn't even do anything, and probably never would, but not Mom?" If there was anyone who would step up to bat for any of her adopted children, it would be their mom. Jenn knew people, and she knew people who knew people, there was hardly even a better person to tell, not in the whole world.

Why tell Marcus and Nell? They were probably the two worst choices in the world, weren't they? Marcus stiff upper lipped it through everything, and Nell... Nell was just a kid! A seventeen-year-old kid who no one would believe and no one really cared to listen to!

"You have to tell Mom. She'd get him put away for life and then you'd never have to see him again!" She balled up her fists in his comforter. "And then it'd be over!"

Silverah

"And ruin my own life in the process," Carson snapped, and then regretted his tone. Nell was perfectly justified to feel the way she did - but he'd spent the last seven years bottling up his trauma and pushing it down and slapping bandaids on it as best he could and... that whole old habits thing, again.

"I mean, yes," he said, "You're right. They'd put him away forever. But can you stop for a second and think about the fallout? For me? I'd go from professional wounded veteran to professional victim overnight. Yeah. I'd love to see him rot in prison and never talk to him again, but I don't want the whole world to know about this, so, you know, catch ******** twenty-two."

He doubted Nell would understand. He felt sick with himself, letting his own cowardice and shame stand in the way of proper justice.

"He told me he'd send me back to the foster system," Carson added, pinching the bridge of the nose. "Both of us. Marcus and I. The fact that we'd found a family at all was a miracle. We'd never find another, not together. Not at all. But if I could be quiet - if I could be good, then he'd be good to me."

"Do you see," he asked, "why I am less than eager to go sit down at dinner with him and exchange pleasantries over ham?"

Nell saw. She saw all too clearly. "I'm telling Mom," she said, flatly. "I know that's, like, not how I'm supposed to do things, and I'm supposed to let you like, do things in your own time? But Dad's not stopping and," She hiccuped, tried to catch her breath. "Mom never would've sent you away. Mom loves you. Mom would--and my friends! I brought them into a house where he was and, and I can't. I won't."

She put her face in Carson's comforter, fingers laced together over her head.

Carson stared at her, teeth on edge. Her response was about what he'd expected, including her characteristic lack of subtlety and strong sense of vigilante justice. Nell had every right to be upset - just like he had every right not to want this to get out.

But he'd said it, and now it was out there in the world. Short of confiscating her phone and duct taping her to his desk chair, he was not keeping it from getting out there even further.

It wasn't like he'd expected her to be able to keep a secret - she'd already been on the fence about telling Jenn about the incident with her friend.

So now he just needed to roll with the punches.

Carson took a seat beside Nell on the bed, and patted her tentatively between the shoulder blades. "I mean," he said, "It would be very effective. She would cut off his balls and feed them to him."

Nell calmed a little bit when Carson patted her back. At least he didn't seem like he was going to be pissed at her forever. "Even if you don't want to do anything legally, she'd divorce him," she said, muffled by the duvet. "She'd make him sorry it ever happened. And you wouldn't have to be involved at all. She wouldn't make you do it. There's pictures. But Mom's gotta know, Carson, she's gotta."

She lifted her head and dropped it back into the Tide-scented comforter, the I'm-laying-down equivalent of a trying-to-be-disaffected teen shrug. "So you tell her or I do. Okay? That's gotta be okay. 'Cause I'm not going to not do it."
