SHADOW RUN
The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.
If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.
If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.
Mechanics
You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel.
Simply roll for attack as you would in battle.
If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings.
After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.
Bonus Mechanics
This bonus is consumable.
The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.
Trainees: 0 recovery
Sun Trainees: 1 recovery
Hunters: 1 recovery
Sun Hunters: 2 recoveries

Melvin waited patiently at the entrance to Shadow Run. It wasn't the first time he had tried the course and on more than one occasion, he had failed. After a while, he just put the course on the back-burner of his mind that slowly became forgotten as more stressful and soul-breaking issues came to the forefront.
Now that he was settling back into the swing of things, he remembered that he still missed some vital clearances. It certainly would be more useful if he could bring any runic with him, and it seemed rather embarrassing for a Runic Master to now have all these courses cleared.
He turned and looked out as he saw a figure come his way. "Hey, Micah, right?"

"Yeah, I'm Micah," Micah said shortly, with a bob of his head. Though he was scowling fiercely, he offered his hand for a handshake. "You Melvin?" He hadn't done the courses yet, but he knew he really should. He wasn't too confident about his chances on this one, not with the way he'd been faring so far with Nova; they were part of a combat division, but they weren't so great at fighting yet. The guy he'd come to meet had the coat pattern of a full-ranked Hunter, and that made Micah even more nervous. If this guy hadn't passed this course yet, how hard was it? He tried not to let his nerves show on his face.

He took the offered hand and shook it, nodding. "That's right. Nice to meet you. I've been meaning to get back to this course, and it's nice to have company. I was just about to go in. How about we step in together. That way we can pull out whoever falls."
He turned to the techs and stepped into the portal. At the other end, he was standing before a dark tunnel. The blue glow of the portal at the other end the only real light, which was good for all the shadowlings lining the walls.
Waiting for Micah to step in, he smiled again. "Well, here goes nothing." He summoned Saliva into his hands and she buzzed with life. Aiming his weapon, he shot into the mass before him and started to move forward, already aiming for his next shot.

"Nice to meet you," Micah answered, relaxing fractionally. "I'll try not to fail." He wasn't promising anything, but he'd sure as hell try. He stepped into the portal after Melvin, and found himself facing down a long, dark tunnel, with the blue glow of the portal luminous at the other end. Melvin was ahead of him. The other man summoned his weapon, a gun of some sort, strangely, flowingly organic; he shot into the mass of little moving shadows that flowed down from the wall, and started down the tunnel. Micah clenched his teeth and didn't pray, because he never prayed. He summoned Nova, the whip's handle appearing in his hand, comforting. When he lashed out at the shadowlings, a couple of them fell under Nova's blades, and the rest withdrew enough to let him move forward. Looking behind, he saw the Moon summon his weapon, a long whip, and start lashing out at the shadowlings.
"Haven't seen you around. Are you a new Moon?" He called behind him.

"Yeah, sorta," Micah called back. "I been here a few months. That's new, right?" New enough, anyway, he guessed. New compared to guys who were higher ranked than he was, anyway. Melvin was cutting a pretty impressive swath through the shadowlings. Still, the little things flowed back in his wake, small pinpoint eyes focusing on Micah with clear intent. He brought Nova around with a snap of his wrist, her blades felling several of them and clearing enough space for another few hurried steps forward. "New enough. Good thing to get your clearances done early though. They help when you have them." And when they had a chance to actually use them.
He aimed again straight ahead, clearing a few more feet as he walked forward.
"Have you been doing a lot of sparring?"

Another couple of shadowlings ripped to shreds under Nova's blades. Melvin was clearing far more of the little things, but Micah guessed that was only to be expected. The guy had more experience and more power to work with. "Good practice anyway," Micah offered. He nodded, then realized it wouldn't be seen, since he was behind Melvin and in the dark anyway. "Yeah," he answered, "figuring out how Nova works, you know?" Status Wave: 3Attack Dmg: 2 Total Shadowlings taken out: 8 Recoveries left: 0

He glanced over his shoulder, seeing Micah following behind. Talking like this gave him a reason to not focus on the mass of shadowlings around him, and he hoped it helped make things easier on the Moon. It also helped Melvin know Micah wasn't passed out or overtaken without actually having to keep his eye constantly on him.
"What do you think? About having a weapon? Pretty bizarre, isn't it?"

Another ebb and flow of the waves of shadowlings, and they were approaching the other portal. Micah tried to focus on what was around him rather than what was ahead, taking out a few more of the little monsters with a sweep of Nova's lash around his feet. "It's weird," he agreed. "Having someone hearing what you think all the time, and talking back. She looks at my memories sometimes... that feels really weird." "Yeah, same here. Also unwanted commentary on everything you do. Only upside is that she can never share it with anyone." To this Saliva bristled and he pointed ahead, firing.
"Though I could do without her trying to get back at me by singing. I have had some headaches. Hopefully yours is kinder."
At the portal, Melvin turned around and waited for the other hunter. For someone so new, the Moon had no problem making it this far. Melvin was actually envious considering he had done so poorly with all the other courses until now.

"I tried that weapon golem thing and Nova posted a picture of her boobs on twitter. That's not happening again," Micah grumbled. He swung Nova's blades into the last mass of shadowlings that blocked the path up to the portal out and felt her bite into them, scattering the ones that were left. "She shrieks at me if she wants me to do something." He was through, and he stepped up to the portal. "That's it, then," he said, the end of his sentence turning up just a little, almost a question. "That's it. Congrats. You just passed Shadow run." He stepped aside and let the other aside, shooting back to keep the shadowlings back before stepping in behind him.
