Morningstar crouched low among the bushes, peering through the leaves to spy on the inhabitants of the clearing. He could see his sisters, Akis and Nova. They were talking, probably about something boring like the weather or something. Or maybe not. He couldn’t think of any time he’d ever heard Akis say anything so… stupid. But Nova was nicer than that. She seemed to think that politeness was important. Morningstar didn’t know where she got that from. Maybe from their dad. He tossed those thoughts away and fixated on Akis. If she was there, then Uncle Gregor couldn’t be too far away. He usually wasn’t, except for when Morningstar and Grimlock dragged him off. Or Akis told him to take a hike. Or Mom told him she needed him for something…
Okay, so now that he thought about it, Morningstar realized that Uncle Gregor wasn’t exactly glued to Akis’s side. Not like Duga was with Nova whenever she was home, which wasn’t often. Maybe that was why she was practically tied to Nova’s side… and why the two mares weren’t seen much for the first few days of Duga’s return…. Ick. Not the point. Focus, Morningstar! He didn’t see Uncle Gregor’s distinctive colors in the meadow, which meant he was probably in the river… maybe… or maybe not…. Come to think of it… where was everyone else?
The foal frowned when he realized he didn’t see his parents anywhere, or Wolfgang or Adalind. Not that Wolf or Addy were that big of a surprise. They spent about as much time in the valley as Duga did. Morningstar thought he’d seen them around, but he probably hadn’t. Their parents could be off doing adult things. Mom did that a lot, and Dad tended to trail along behind her, so that was no biggie. What was more concerning was that he didn’t see the Grimms. That couldn’t be good…
Not that Morningstar was worried they were up to anything, of course. They were always up to something. What worried him was that they were up to something and it involved Uncle Gregor… and had forgotten to invite Morningstar. The possibility that they hadn’t WANTED to invite the horned foal didn’t even occur to him. He was Morningstar Sangfroid. He was the cleverest of the Sangfroids, if he said so himself. Who wouldn’t want to involve him in any plans they might have? No, they had to have forgotten, which was almost unforgiveable in the foal’s mind. If there was fun to be had, he would have it!
With that determination, he eased himself out of the bushes with the intention to track down his brother and the family familiar. Whatever they were up to, he’d get himself wrapped up in it. No doubt it involved Uncle Gregor, so he could knock down two birds with one stone.

"What are you doing?" Grimlock asked noting his brother finally emerging from his hiding place. The kelip tailed foal had been curled up under a nearby tree, the shade affording him time on the dry land without his scales drying out too much, and the angle allowing him to spy on his brother spying on everyone else. Some days it paid to be the Grim rabbit's protege. Some days it seemed like the bunny knew everything that went on around this place. After a little time of observation, Grimlock was starting to figure out why. And yes, he was named after the rabbit, that much he had been told. To this point he figured it was because Grim was such an indispensable member of the herd.
"People are going to get the wrong idea if you keep hiding in bushes and staring at them..." he trailed off and glanced back in the direction of his brother's fixation. As the youngest of the Sangfroid clan, and really, by this point they were a mighty clan. In fact Grimlock often dreamed of going out and seeking to claim more land in the name of the family if his mother so desired. Just as soon as he got a little bigger, at least...
"Something going on with Nova and grouchy mouth?" he asked glancing back across the way. It wasn't that he didn't like his sister. No one could dislike Nova with her sweet, albeit skittish disposition. She was okay. Akis could occasionally have a bit of a sharp tongue (sharp teeth too and that Wasn't speaking metaphorically). But she did bring good old Uncle Gregor into the picture. As a point of clarity, Grimlock knew very well that Gregor wasn't his uncle, at least now he did. But the tenancy to call him that was there and honestly, it was too much fun to get the grouchy old warrior all riled up like that.

"Grimlock!" Morningstar chirped, bouncing over to his brother. "There you are! Where's Uncle Gregor?" He didn't bother asking where Grimlock had been. No doubt he had been hiding, better than Morningstar. He also ignored the comment about his staring. Who wouldn't want to have Morningstar's attention lavished on them? Who could possibly get the wrong idea? No, he was fixating on the important things. The whereabouts of his favorite toy...er... relative.

"Probably hiding again," Grimlock said flicking his tail lazily. "Gotta give him credit, he's getting pretty good at that..."

Morningstar huffed, seeming annoyed. "You'd think someone that pink wouldn't be able to hide so well," he grumbled. Gregor was way too eye catching to be able to successfully hide, but Morningstar couldn’t deny that his brother was right. The large stallion had been getting better and better at being sneaky. It was probably thanks to all the stalking that Grimlock and Morningstar had done. Ooh! Or maybe he was hiding in the river… Morningstar hadn’t considered checking out the river. Despite the fins that graced his back like little wings, Morningstar wasn’t a great swimmer. At least, not as good as Gregor, Akis, Wolfgang, and even Grimlock. The failing was something that Morningstar was less than proud of, but he soothed his ego by reminding himself that he could hardly be perfect. After all, if he was how could anyone else stand being around him? No… it was good that he had one flaw. Swimming just happened to be that flaw, but Morningstar was working on fixing that. He tried to swim whenever he got the chance, though it usually resulted in him splashing around a lot.
He shook his head quickly. That was, once again, not the point at hand. “Maybe he’s in the river,” he suggested to his brother. “Have you looked there?” Wait… Grimlock hadn’t been looking for their Uncle Gregor, had he? No… Morningstar was pretty sure Grimlock had just been chilling in the shadows, watching Morningstar watch everyone else. Which… now that Morningstar thought about it, was kinda creepy in its own right. What did you call a stalker who stalked a stalker? Not that Morningstar was a stalker…. And Grimlock wasn’t a stalker, either… but still…. What did that make them? He contemplated the question for a few seconds then dismissed the questions as unimportant. Almost immediately he changed his mind and stored the questions to ask Gregor when he found them.
Morningstar smirked a bit as he imagined the headache he could give Uncle Gregor by asking the circular question. That was another game he enjoyed playing with Akis’ mate. Whenever he thought of a question that would give him a headache if he thought too much on it, he asked Gregor. When he had a question he really wanted answered, he asked Nova. Under no circumstances did he ever ask his mother any question, no matter how much he might want an answer. He had learned that lesson ages ago when he asked Zahavah why she was so small and Dad was so big. After about five minutes, his eyes had glazed over. Ten minutes and he had felt his eye start twitching. Fifteen minutes in and he had felt a headache pounding under his horns. It never occurred to him that Zahavah had deliberately been giving him the runaround.
