Alek had barely spared a thought for Yael since he and his sister had returned home from the conflict with the Alkidike extremists. They were about as far away from the strange new island as it as possible to be without venturing past the bounds of the known world, and he had more pressing matters to deal with here in Zena... at least until the invaders showed up.

Later he would hear that there had been more of them close to the city, but that day he only saw two. The first was barely a flash of dark armored scales between the trees, and Alek could only hope he was seeing things when he noticed it.

"Did you just... I think I saw something over there," he said to his sister, fingers tightening on his walking stick. He hoped he was hallucinating. That thing was huge.

"Hm?" was the noise Kayin made when presented with the sort of question from Alek. Her mind had been elsewhere until that point, and the statement brought her from her own mindscape back into reality.

She looked in the direction he was looking, into the trees, but saw nothing that seemed out of place. That didn't mean something WASN'T there at one point though. She was pretty sure Alek wasn't one who 'just saw things'.

"What'd it look like?" she asked as she squinted, somehow hoping that would magically make her see something. And it did. From this distance it looked like little craters in the snow. Tracks perhaps? She didn't know of any native wildlife with feet like those.

"It was very big," he supplied unhelpfully, his mind rather stuck on that single track. Alek's initial shock subsided only slightly as he followed Kayin's gaze and saw the tracks. At least he hadn't been hallucinating.

"It looked like it had a hunched back, I guess," he continued. "Its head was down low. I don't know if it was sniffing for something or just built like that." He didn't move. "Should we get closer?"

Kayin pondered for a moment. Should they get closer? That was a good question. While it could be dangerous, she was also pretty sure this wasn't a creature native around here, which meant that it wasn't a creature that should be around here, which could be even more dangerous for people if they possibly started breeding or something like that.

"I'd like to get a closer look anyway," she said finally. "If anything so we can report it if it's something that isn't supposed to be around this area. I'm not familiar with the shape of those foot prints..."

Alek nodded. Usually he would have waited for Kayin to take the lead, but this time he decided to reluctantly show a little initiative himself.

"I'll go around that way. If one of us gets cornered, the other can distract it and lure it away." Even after his apparent display of bravado, he still hung back to make sure the plan was all right with his sister. It didn't help that it sounded a little foolhardy now that it was out of his mouth. What was he honestly going to do to distract a creature like that?
