Aadhira was bored. Now, while this was truly a terrible, horrible thing, possibly unconscionable, it was not uncommon. The boredom had not crept up on him for lack of things to do, either, and that was what made it worse. Justin's house was truly full of interesting things: the blender, for one, was a powerful tool that Justin did not use enough. And there was a television and several gaming systems that he had as yet not touched. However, Aadhira craved a different kind of stimulation. Unlike Justin, he was not an introvert at heart. His guardian was perfectly content to sit in half-darkness, chewing on his lip as a particularly tough enemy flounced across the screen, but this was just too.... quiet. Aadhira thought quiet was a good word for it. Or perhaps alone. Regardless of what word he could tack onto the feeling, it needed fixing. This was how Aadhira had come to lay on his bed, papers idly strewn about him, cell phone in hand. He doubted Justin would miss the papers, not for a while, at least. He would have an adequate amount of time with them. The sheets contained the numbers of raevan guardians in neat little lines and, where applicable, some potential candidate and raeven numbers as well. Having been barred from leaving the house without a 'good reason' (a frustratingly vague statement, Aadi thought, and entirely unfair. After all, nothing bad had happened), the raevan had decided to connect socially in another manner entirely. It would not be physically, unless he could wrangle an invitation or something. Aadi did not have an exact plan set up for such a thing; he remained impulsive and terrible planner. Justin could take care of all plans, surely. He did not know it now, but this could be termed 'cold-calling' where he himself was the product being sold. And who wouldn't want a piece of him? Thus far, he'd dialed a few numbers, hanging up immediately once the call rang through to voice mail. Aadhira held no desire to speak to robots or extend his greetings to pre-recorded boxes that would surely warp his voice. He had debated calling Ethiriel, or texting her, but refrained. She was a resource that, having met once, he could rely on. But he wanted someone new. It was really a shame that no one would pick up, he thought mulishly. He combed his fingers through his hair, ribbon flopping lazily. Finally, he jabbed out another number and waited, listening impatiently to the ring.

The rusalka snatched up the phone the moment it began to ring, answering it with a breathless "Hello, can you hear me??"
She had been waiting by Lorenzo's cell phone since before sunrise, having seen him pick it up and talk into it several times. He had given her one of her own, but it didn't make any noise ever, and she didn't quite understand it yet, although she was trying, because of all the devices that Lorenzo kept checking, it seemed like the most interesting one. And last night, Lorenzo had forgotten to bring it with him when he went to bed, so she had seized her opportunity. She had first tried dialing into it herself, but all she got on the other end were a bunch of angry strangers' voices, and she didn't like that at all, so she had decided to let the ringing happen to her instead of inflicting it on others.
She still hadn't chosen a name for herself or brushed up on her Russian properly or read all the books Lorenzo set out for her or anything, but this distraction seemed far more interesting than the other things she had to do, all of which felt suspiciously like work. Taking a deep breath and collecting herself like she saw Lorenzo do before he answered a call, she started over and imitated him as best she could. Normally he started with his name, but since she didn't have one, she figured she could skip that part.
"How may I help you?" she asked briskly and professionally.

Aadhira could hear her just fine. However, the breathy voice on the other end of the line did not particularly sound like a Lorenzo. He wasn't sure what a Lorenzo sounds like, but he had built something up in his head: a voice with rolled r's and a deep, bass rumble, similar to some don Juan from a daytime soap. He was so immersed in deciding who this new voice must be that Aadhira did not notice she had spoken again until a few seconds had passed. He blinked. "Ah, hello. Are you Lorenzo? My name is Aadhira. I had called..." He trailed off. Now that he had someone (even if he did not know who) on the phone, Aadi wasn't entirely sure what to say. Finding out who it was could be his first step. And if this was a Lorenzo... what a twist!

The rusalka considered. She hadn't bothered to introduce herself simply because she didn't have a name, but considering that she had already had several days to choose a name, that fact was starting to get a little embarrassing to explain to people, and also just reminded her that she was putting off something that Lorenzo had told her to take seriously.
"I'm not Lorenzo," she informed Aadhira airily. "My identity is top secret." That might make them hang up, she supposed, but it was less embarrassing, and also had the potential to be fun for her. "Aadhira's a cool name, though. What does it mean? Did you choose your name? What made you choose it, hypothetically speaking? Is it because it was at the top of the name list alphabetically? I-- Some people do it that way, but then other people lecture them and tell them that names are supposed to be more important than that."
She remembered that she was supposed to pretend to be professional like Lorenzo again, and cleared her throat, trying to put on the tone of voice he used on the phone once more. "I mean, what can I do for you, Aadhira?"

It was not Lorenzo. Aadhira leaned up, tucking a pillow underneath his arms and taking a moment to twist his hair to one side as she spoke. This was not Lorenzo and it was also a secret! Fascinating! "My guardian chose my name. His name is Justin - I think I would die if my name were Justin." He made a long-suffering sound. Justin was a plain and boring name, but at least Justin had the foresight to give him an alright name: Aadhira. His guardian had told him it was because he had first looked like some sort of celestial body floating in space. A rather nice thought, Aadi mused, even if Justin had been thinking with the wrong set of origins. The frei was certainly not an alien. "Aadhira means 'moon'. You did not sound like a Lorenzo; why is your identity top secret? Will spies come to murder me if I learn it?" This was asked quite earnestly. Aadhira had seen a variation of that plot in some show and while he had no wish to be murdered over someone whose name he did not even know, it was rather exciting. He tried to ignore her attempt to turn the conversation to something like the purpose of his call for fear it would end said call.

"Justin is a pretty boring name," the rusalka agreed. "If I was a Justin, I'd want to name somebody a cool name like Aadhira, too." She asked, "So if you have a guardian and you remember him naming you, are you a raevan? A moon raevan?" She knew that Lorenzo had been looking into other kinds of rebirthing programs for her, but she did not know which, and the context of Lab was the only context she'd ever heard the word "guardian" being used in before.
Considering his next statement, she said, "I'm glad I don't sound like a Lorenzo, because I think that name is pretty boring too." She pulled a face. "Anyway, as for my real identity..." She reviewed the possibilities in her head. She didn't think that agreeing that spies coming to murder Aadhira would be the right kind of threat for a necromancer. Several undead murder victims had come to visit over the last few days, and the rusalka was beginning to think of being murdered as a pretty impermanent state of affairs, even though Lorenzo insisted that she should take it seriously. "Now, would a necromancer kill people?" she asked coyly. "We do the exact opposite of that around here. My identity is top secret for... top secret reasons."
She worried that Aadhira mght hang up if she kept playing coy, so she quickly added, "I'd say I'm just naturally mysterious. I'm so secret that I don't even show up in mirrors."

"Mhm," he said, pleased. "Not a moon raevan, though, something more princely, I'm told." That was certainly padding things a bit, even if he did look quite nice (and knew it). Aadhira felt as though essences and souls should be held close to his chest until he met someone in person. In an ideal world, the other party should have to guess with some sort of penalty until they either guessed correctly or forfeited. But Aadi would not relish the same game turned around on him, he thought. He did not like to lose.
What, he wondered, did she sound like? An Adele, Francine, Nuit? "No, although I am not sure what you sound like. If you will give me no name, what am I to call you - necromancer? What an inelegant name..." Aadhira had never met a necromancer before, only vaguely understand that they had something to do with the undead of the fleshly variety. "What does a necromancer do?" He was still running through potential names in his head as he spoke. Perhaps, if he had not been so pre-occupied he might have latched onto the fact that she knew what a raevan was. The comment about the mirror stopped his thoughts entirely for a moment.
"That must be terrible!" he said sincerely. "How do you know what you look like or if your hair is perfect or how your smile might tilt your face one way or light it up charmingly another?" Aadhira had forgotten, for the time being, that he was supposed to be making a Good Impression.

"Like a lich?" said the rusalka, whose education to date had primarily involved Slavic name lists and necromantic legal procedures. She began to feel slightly excited. Maybe there was another raevan with an undead soul like her? Then she would feel less weird about it.
She made a face, though he couldn't see it. "Don't call me necromancer!" she protested. "That's Lorenzo's job." She considered what he might call her. Definitely not Niemoj, that was for sure. She hated Lorenzo's nickname for her. "Well, a necromancer raises the dead," she explained. "Not ghosts, Lorenzo hates it when people call him about ghosts. Mostly pets, honestly. And then a necromancer also talks with undead people about how to get used to being undead. And a necromancer makes educational pamphlets about being undead... And he writes contracts and stuff." She shrugged. "It sounds super exciting at first, because technically it's magic, but it's actually pret-ty boring around here."
She seemed nonplussed by his distress about her mirror problem. "Oh! Well, I can still look down and see myself, but I don't think there's much to look at anyway." After she had started to look undead, she had more or less stopped looking. Remembering this made her insides squirm, so she tried to pull the conversation back to the guessing game. "I mean, I'm mysterious, isn't that more interesting than being pretty??"

"What's a lich?" Aadhira had mostly ignored the fantasy rpgs that Justin played, or he would already know. The sci-fi ones were kind of cool, though. "And being a necromancer sounds like a lot of paperwork. Justin brings dead computers and stuff back to life. Techromancer. Still boring." That kind of sounded like Justin loved technology a little too much, Aadi thought, and rolled over again. It was difficult to stay still.
He sighed, thinking for a moment how his world seemed comprised of chunks of everything being too exciting for words(!) and everything being boring. He hated the boring parts. His attention span remained markedly short despite Justin's best efforts to engage him in things. "Of course there are things to look at - everyone is looking and it is wonderful! You sound pretty, and pretty and mysterious often go hand in hand. I could call you Cloak, since you're so mysterious, or Veil." He hummed for a second. "We should meet! I can see how mysterious you are - you could even wear a cloak and veil to retain some mystery."
He sounded entirely pleased with the idea.

"A lich is like a king or a powerful sorcerer who is all like 'auuuuugh i don't wanna die i have so much left to dooooo' so they use their enormous power to become undead," explained the rusalka. "They're, like, the fanciest kind of undead person." Although, she thought a little disappointedly, if he didn't even know what the word meant, his soul was probably not undead. She supposed that was good for him at least, but it felt a little lonely.
"I got a computer yesterday!" she said as he related Justin's job to her. "Lorenzo didn't tell me there were techromancers. Maybe he could explain to me how computers work, because Lorenzo is better at explaining necromancy."
"Everyone is looking?!" she gasped, pulling the phone away from her ear for a moment and looking for the video box that she had seen Dina talking through the other day during their skype call. "Well, even if they were looking, nobody can see me through video anyway. Video and mirrors and cameras. We tried them all, and none of them work." She repeated his name suggestions and said, "Hold on, I need to write those down!" She remembered she hadn't told him she didn't actually have a name, and quickly added, "So I'll know what codename you're using for me," airily.
"Oh! I want to meet a lot of raevans!" she enthused when he said they should meet. "I'm meeting one tomorrow, and I've been so excited that I can't sleep. Lorenzo said that he'd invite her over, and that her soul is a nymph, and that she's all flowery, and I read up on nymphs while I was waiting for his phone to ring. You should come visit me, I can't leave the house right now. And I can wear Lorenzo's cloak and his mask if you want, just so long as you come to see me."

"Sounds decaying," he said. "Though I can appreciate the immortality factor." And the fancy part, Aadhira thought. Now that he thought about it, the word seemed familiar - probably something from a video game, not enough for him to actually speak on the real-life implications of liches. "I'm sure I could ask him to show you some things. He wants me to learn more as well, Veil." It was clear he'd already decided what to call her. Once he had a sort of name for her, he felt more at ease. A name was an important construct of a being. Aadhira supposed he was lucky he didn't hate his. "I would be terribly sad if you forgot my codename for you." He injected a pout into his voice although he wasn't sure how anyone could forget things that concerned him. "Well, perhaps not everyone looking, but a lot. I would certainly look." He rolled over to grab a notebook, his wings folding neatly as he did so. Idly, he doodled as he spoke, drawing out a vaguely disproportionate cloaked figure. Her enthusiasm was good and Aadhira smiled widely. "Who are you meeting? Flowers are nice; Justin's friend has flowers, a shopful! I want to meet everyone because everyone should meet me. Why can't you leave? And I think I should like to look at you, so no cloak is needed. I promise to still find you utterly mysterious!"

"Lorenzo says that there's nothing wrong with decaying," the rusalka said dutifully, "But personally, I think it's kind of gross." She held out her free arm at length and examined it worriedly. It looked and felt like a dead person's, but so far it was all in one piece. She hoped it wouldn't decay. That was what the fel essence was for, right? If she couldn't see her reflection, at least her body would stay fresh. Right??
"Yeah, Lorenzo wants me to learn more about necromancy so I can understand myself better, too," she said as Aadhira explained Justin's plans for him, "But he won't let me do any necromancy. Does Justin let you do techromancy? I think doing magic sounds really cool, but I guess that there are a lot of rules or whatever." Lorenzo had been very evasive when he said she couldn't do any necromancy. He hadn't even shown her any yet, just a bunch of theory books.
She pulled a face as he moved on, insisting, "Really, it's probably better that nobody looks at me." She didn't like to think about it. "I don't like looking at me."
She eagerly grasped at the change of subject and said, "Lorenzo said her name is Eden! That's a really pretty name. I wonder if she chose it herself!" He moved on to ask her why she couldn't leave, and she paused, biting her lip. "Oh, well, Lorenzo is worried... About like, how my body will hold up and stuff outside and, like, if being exposed to too many things too fast will tire me out? Apparently I'm very delicate. I don't feel very delicate. Actually, most of the time, I feel pretty bored. So if you visit me, you can look at me if you have to, and I can have fun!"

"Decaying things smell, too," he added, matter-of-factly. One time, Justin had tossed out some bad meat and forgotten that he had just taken out the trash so it sat... and sat... and sat. And it smelled. Justin needed a lot of work, Aadhira thought. "Why would you leanr about necromany and not learn it? Justin will let me later, when I'm not in danger of frying a computer." "Eden sounds pretty, like a queen of fairies. And I think you should leave, even if he says no. One time, I left on my own and had an adventure and met another raevan." His brief meeting with Xiu didn't really qualify as an adventure, but she didn't know that. "I could visit you. I would like to. And you can show me your mysterious self and see my lovely self and stuff." Stuff was a pretty vague ending, but he couldn't think of anything else. Would they play games or listen to books or...? He just didn't know. He twisted his neck, almost cracking it until he realized she might be able to hear that. "Where do you live, anyway?"

"You can mask the smell in some ways," the rusalka stated matter-of-factly. "I just hate when they use formaldehyde. That smells the grossest!" The whole house smelled very faintly of it even when everyone currently inside it was alive and well. "I don't know why Lorenzo won't let me try necromancy yet, though. I've only been studying it, for like, a couple of days."
She brightened up when the subject switched to Eden. "Right?? I bet she's so cool!" She paused and added, "I bet you're cool too, of course. So you should come visit soon."
She bit her lip as he advised she just leave.
"I don't know," she hesitated. "What if I really am delicate?? What if I end up hurting myself? I don't like being stuck here but Lorenzo says that my soul wanted to be stuck here. There's a contract and everything." Her first few days had been overwhelming, but pretty much everybody she had been carted along to meet so far had seemed to insinuate that Lorenzo knew best, and furthermore, at some point in the past she had thought Lorenzo knew best, too. No amount of frustration could cause her to pluck up the courage to disobey everybody she met just for a little fun.
If Aadhira snuck out of the house though, it was probably fine. She trusted him to know that he wasn't too delicate to sneak out of houses. After all, he knew how to use a phone and do techromancy. He seemed to be an impressively professional individual.
"I live in Durem!" she said, reading out an address from the back of one of Lorenzo's business cards. "You can come over and we can do stuff!" She didn't know what stuff entailed. Her days were mostly filled up with being-alive-practice though, and compared to that, stuff sounded better.
