I know it sounds completely prudish and judgemental of me, but I hate it too. What REALLY bothers me, though, is when I see Muslim girls who will wear the hijab, and then wear these really tight sexy clothes. Yes, they cover their entire body except hands and faces, but sometimes clothing can be just as sexy (or sexier) than being completly nude. The whole point of the hijab is modesty and the hypocrisy of it really annoys me.
Back to non-Muslims... yes, it bothers me. It bothers me the most when girls will dress that way and then complain that they get stared at by men or complain that they are cold in winter. There's a girl in one of my classes who complained of the cold so I told her to get a bigger jacket (she wore this tiny little jean thing) and she says "oh no, then I'll just look fat!" Well... if you aren't willing to keep yourself warm, STFU ABOUT THE COLD! GRRR!

I am not even particularly fond of the Hillary Duff and Olsen Twins lines of clothing which are very modest for your "tween" girls. Because it's about dressing GROWN. I don't know what happened to light up shoes and cartoon character shirts and jeans with holes in the knees for 10 year olds but I'd like those back.
I'm also very careful of what teeshirts I choose for my daughter I don't mind "Everyone loves a brown eyed girl" because in my family (mom, dad, grandparents, brother, brother's kid etc) she's the only brown eyed girl (thanks to her daddy) or "I didn't do it!" or even "Blame my Sister!"
But I do have a problem with "My mom thinks I'm at the mall" and "Flirt" The first insinuating that the young girl is somewhere she's not supposed to be and the second, well blech.

The majority of Muslim girls I've met and ran into didn't dress like that. That's the same idea of Christians wearing crosses and the same thing, it doesn't make any sense and they obviously aren't respecting themselves or their beliefs. It also varies on the age. Not sure how this went on a hijab/Muslim tangent.
Lol, what's funny is I was smiling at the "Brown eye girl" shirts because I DO think they are cute. I do have a problem with the clothes that are being pumped out like "Buy it for me." I am assuming this is a conversation about younger girls, not teens that dress that way. It just bugs me that parent WOULD buy some of these things for their girls. At the same time, I don't know many people who would and make it a point to make sure their girls learn why they can't and teach them good values.

I have a boy obviously and I dress him tastefully in pretty much miniatures of what his daddy where's....cargo pants or jeans and Tshirts. If I dont approve of the clothing ex. a friend of mine got him some really redneck stuff sleeveless shirts and camo stuff he never wears those things. I think one of the worst examples of kids wearing innappropriate things is little girls in bikini's. I am not talking about tweenies I'm talking about toddlers, it makes me ill. I remember when I was 5 the only bathing suit my mom could find me was a bikini and my parents said they found tasteless and they asked be what I wanted to do and I said just get it and I will wear a shirt over the top. I did that and I think my parents did a good job drilling into my head what they felt was appropriate, to this day I still pick tasteful clothing no bare midriff or anything that shows to much of me to strangers.

wotfan I think one of the worst examples of kids wearing innappropriate things is little girls in bikini's. I am not talking about tweenies I'm talking about toddlers, it makes me ill. My MIL and I get into this arguement all the time. I think like maybe 3 and unders running around nekkid at a beach or in the back yard in a sprinkler or kiddie pool is just good fun. That it's not a big deal. They're little kids nothing is sexual about their nekkidness. BUT I have a problem with toddler bikinis. And it's because Bikinis HIGHLIGHT "sexual" areas. I can not stand seeing triangle top bikinis on toddlers. It's disgusting in my opinion. Bikinis are like saying "I only have to cover up THESE few naughty areas" and just give me the icks on tiny little two year olds. She doesn't understand and sends "florida bikinis" to us during the summer for Lissa. I'm seriously not putting a triangle cut tie halter on my two year old...ever.

yes we are talking about younger girls around the ages of 2-6 to be clear. And the other day i was droping off my boys and i seen these little girl who couldnt have been more than 3 years old wearing a skirt that was so short that i could see her dora undies stiking out at the bottom i ask you is this not crazy? i just wanted to walk up to her mother a smake her in the face and ask her what the hell is wrong with you? and its not just kids clothes latly i mean i was trying to buy my daughter a doll last week and i just so happened to walk by the barbies and i couldnt believe what she was wearing (a tiny little shirt and a tiny little pair of shorts and that was one of the middly dressed ones by the way). it just seems to me that the media is trying to pull owr girls into the sexual lime light as fast as they can now a days and i think its just crazy

That's the same idea of Christians wearing crosses and the same thing, it doesn't make any sense and they obviously aren't respecting themselves or their beliefs. It also varies on the age. Not sure how this went on a hijab/Muslim tangent. Oh no! I didn't mean to imply that all do or that most do. Simply that it really bothers me when I do seem them do it. I have yet to see anyone in this city wearing a crucifix, but that would probably bother me too. Like you said, it's the hypocricy and disrespect to the beliefs they are claiming to adhere to. Bikinis on kids: I agree completely with what's been said so far. I remember having a bikini when I was little, but I didn't wear the top half. It was just "swimming underwear." I didn't have a top that needed covering so I didn't bother covering it. That was only for one summer, though. Normally I wore full one-piece suits (for the last few years, I've worn those with a pair of men's swim trunks as well just because I find the crotch line a bit too revealing on most suits, especially if I am moving my legs around a lot). When I was very little, I inherited a bunch of my older step-sister's clothes (she was a teen). Some of it fit me, others I "modified" so that it did. A lot of it was rather sexual. I had no idea at the time, I just liked it because it was very colorful (this was the 80s, afterall). But my mother has since told me that she was absolutly paranoid that I would grow up to wear that sort of thing. I am glad I never wore the stuff outside the house, though, lol. A few years back, I was working in a toy store. We sold these HelloKitty makeup kits and such. One women with a very young girl (maybe 8-9 years old) in tow came in one day. The girl was dressed like an adult; mini-skirt, high heels, the works. They were paying for one of the makeup kits when I made a joke about her growing up really fast. The mom glares at me and says "she has to learn how to do this stuff now, otherwise she will be teased when all the other girls are doing it!" She was forcing her child to wear makeup and dress like an adult out of fear that otherwise she wouldn't know how to when "the time comes."

I know that you have good points, but where do we stop blaming ourselves as parents and blaming every other thing in our culture? It seems to me the children who do act like that, the parents forget they ARE the parents. We're the one that buys the clothes, we're the one that pays the bills. We're the one responsible for shaping how they view themselves and educating them. I think it's a bit much to blame the media for everything.

Yes but you can't protect them from everyone. I see nothing wrong with letting a 2 or 3 year old run around naked in one's own backyard or around the house. Perhaps it would be better to use discretion when out in public, but I still don't see anything majorly wrong with it. As long as the parent keeps an eye on their child, to watch for people who might be looking (etc), then I think it's ok.
