Pale blue eyes scanned the earth below, peering into the canopy of trees below. The leafless branches still gave significant cover to the ground below, but the wide river flowing through the forest gave a clean break in the foliage. Slowly, he swooped down to the clearing, his claws outstretched and ready to catch his weight. Landing gently on the bank of the river, Emmett sighed. Oh, how he disliked winter. Flying was always his favorite, the wind in his feathers and the breeze in his face. During the colder months, though, it became a chore. His lips were chapped, his ears hurt from the cold, and his claws never seemed to be able to get warm, whether he was flying or not. Reluctantly, he pressed his face into the flowing water, the frigid temperatures stinging his already sore lips.

Snow covered hooves tramped through the newly fallen snow, the stallion attached humming a bit of a tune. He was grateful for the drop in wind that had come with the storm, as well as the beautiful clean feeling that came with it. The pure white ground always made Omusa feel as if everything magically became so pure, and he smiled as he took it all in. The sun made the frigid weather seem warm and welcoming, and he looked up to find it peeking through the trees in its cloudless sky. Continuing on, he noticed the flash of yellow in the distance. He furrowed his brows, wondering who'd be crazy enough to land so close to the river like that. While some parts had frozen over, the rapids certainly had not, and Omusa always found it the most reliable place to drink.

Emmett Alexander tended not to land much while he was travelling through the lands. He was greatly considering extending his journey to the jungle as he waited for the rest of the lands to grow warmer, but he heard wretched things about the humidity there, and he was terrified of spiders. He'd heard this one story about a spider as big as a foal's head living in the jungle, and that made him wish to never go there again. But it was warmer... Sighing, he lifted his head from the water. Though he could hear nothing over the rushing rapids, he could smell something... Someone was definitely near. He turned his head and looked about him cautiously, but he couldn't see anything. How strange.

Omusa continued toward the river and nodded to the other stallion, unsure if he could see him. "Hello!" but his words fell on deaf ears, as the crashing of water on rocks drowned him out. He pursued with caution, not wanting to startle the hippogryph. He could only imagine what kind of damage those claws would do if he got too close. Upon growing closer, he tried to call out again. Nothing. He sighed and shook his head, making his way even closer to the stallion. Finally, he was just a few paces away, and within easy range for attack. He grimaced at the thought. "Uh. Hello there?" His voice was strong, and he hoped it had carried. Shouting was necessary this close to the rapids.

Emmett spat water from his mouth when he finally heard the other stallion's voice, and it surprised him so much he reared back, claws at the ready for a fight. But... That just didn't make sense, did it? Why would somebody introduce themselves before they attacked? Logic catching up to his primal instinct, he righted himself and blushed, looking at the stallion before him. "Uh. Hi," he began. His normally quiet, calm voice didn't quite carry over the noise and he repeated himself. "Hello," he shouted, "Sorry about the claws. You scared me." He nodded, his cheeks still pink with embarrassment. "Did you need something?" He didn't know what else to say, and he also didn't know why somebody would start a conversation unless they were in need of help, so he figured he'd ask outright to prevent any more of his embarrassing qualities from shining through.

Glad he'd made his presence known at a distance, Omusa shrank from the clawed stallion, still worried about getting hit. When the other male returned to all fours, though, the natural male sighed in relief. "Uh, sorry for startling you. I just didn't want to... Startle you, I guess?" While it made sense, Omusa felt rather ridiculous phrasing it that way, but it seemed as if the river had drowned him out anyway, as he was getting quite a puzzled look from the yellow hippogryph. When the other male spoke the first time, Omusa mimicked the puzzled look and waited for him to speak again. When he did, Omusa shook his head. "Oh, no, no help. I just saw you and was curious, I guess." Yelling was strange and awkward from such a close difference, but it was a necessity.

Black brows furrowed over pale green eyes. Emmett found it odd that someone would just walk up to a stranger and start talking out of curiosity. What if that stranger happened to be violent and having a less than enjoyable day? He just couldn't wrap his head around it, and didn't quite know how to respond. "Oh. Well, okay, I guess." But what now? Here he was, just enjoying a cool drink on a freezing day, only to be interrupted by someone who was 'curious.' Awkwardly, he just stared at the other stallion, his claws digging into the frozen ground below and the rest of him desperately wishing for this encounter to be over.

Omusa stared back at the staring stallion. Did he really not have anything to say? "Well," he piped up in an attempt to break the awkward pause in conversation, "I'm Omusa. I come here to drink from the river rather frequently. It's one of the only places that doesn't freeze up all the way during the winter." He nodded, his voice growing hoarse from the yelling. With the thought of the cold water in his mind, he made his way closer to the river and began to drink. He hadn't encountered anyone here before, but speaking was rather difficult with so much noise. Maybe that's why the other stallion didn't want to talk. Well now he just felt silly. After taking a long drag from the water, he smiled at the other stallion. "Sorry if I'm bothering you."

Emmett Alexander stared at his conversational partner awkwardly, not particularly interested in talking back. After a few moments, though, he felt bad for the poor stallion and shook his head. "Oh, no. No, not bothering me. I just. Don't have much to say I guess." He, too, began to drink, wondering if this would be enough to make him go away. Upon realizing that it wasn't, he raised his head again and sighed. "Uh. I'm Emmett. Alexander. You can call me Emmett though. Or Emm I guess." He hoped that the other stallion could hear his meager voice over the rushing of the water, as he certainly did not want to have to repeat himself. Emmett had the dilemma of choosing whether to stay or fly away in a desperate attempt to free himself from this awkward situation.

Omusa perked up at hearing that he wasn't bothering the other stallion, and he smiled broadly. "Uh," he began, struggling to hear exactly what the stallion was saying. But what he could hear, he nodded to in active participation. "Okay, Emm!" He hadn't heard the stallion's entire name, and felt rather bad about it, but he was glad that he had given him a shorter, easier alternative. The natural colored stallion did not feel at all awkward, perhaps lacking the ability to pick up social cues from others due to being alone for so long. Not letting the pause last very long, he began speaking again. "So, uh. Are you from around here? I mean I haven't seen you before, but that doesn't mean that you haven't been here." He nodded matter-of-factly, waiting impatiently for the hippo's answer.

Emmett coughed and cleared his throat, the cold air and his runny nose playing its toll on his voice. He shook his head in response, but upon realizing it wouldn't be enough to sate the other stallion's communication needs, he sighed. "Uh. No, I just stopped because I was thirsty and I saw that the water wasn't frozen." In reality, he now wished he hadn't stopped, and had instead waited until he found another, calmer, quieter setting. At least then, if he were to be harassed, he could hear and communicate more freely with his captor. He sighed, shaking his head and looking to the sky. One big leap and a flap of his wings is all it would take. Just one jump and he could be free of this ridiculous male.

The stallion nodded excitedly, happy for the company. "Oh, I see! Where were you headed? It must be so nice to have wings and be able to go places faster than the rest of us!" He mused for several moments about what it would be like to fly. When the stallion took too long to answer, though, Omusa kept the conversation going on his own. "Oh, were you going some place warm?! I know that if I could head some place warm and get there before the end of the winter freeze, I'd do it in a heartbeat!" He nodded and began to shift his weight from side to side in titillation. "You must feel so lucky to be able to go somewhere warm right about now!"
