It had been a full day of beast taming with Sebastien and Naevius was happy for the break. It had been getting a little dark and even though they weren't very far from the compound both of them were quite hungry so they decided to stop for some dinner. A fire had been made and food was roasting over it. The smell was enough to make her mouth water. Naevius grabbed the canteen from her bag and two cups and filled each, handing one to Sebastien. "One of the first times we actually talked talked was at a fire like this. Do you remember?" She'd be surprised if he had forgotten since she knew she could never. "It doesn't seem like so long ago...though I know it actually was. It was on our way back after the war. It's crazy to think about that know, isn't it?" Nae looked at him fondly, oh how far they had come. She sighed and reached a hand out to him.

Sebastien was leaning back against a rock, although he sat straighter when Naevius offered him a cup. He took a sip of refreshing water and smiled.

"Of course I remember," he replied, "How could I forget?" Their first meeting as it stood hadn't been all that built on kinship. He had been hired to watch over the princess nee noblewoman for her father and she hadn't been all too happy about it. After their capture, though, and after the surrender, things had all changed around a lonely fire. He took Naevius' hand when offered and first brought it to his lips for a kiss, then simply held it and stroked it with a thumb. "It feels like forever ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday." he said. It had been his first wartime experience, and it had been something he never wanted to experience again.

"It was the first time I truly felt fear." Naevius admitted. Though she was sure he probably remembered that. She did sort of cry in front of him. "So much had happened in such a short span of time. It's hard to believe that what had been the Oban way, of conquering other places had such a negative influence on the other parties. I mean, you never really think about it until it changes, right? At least I didn't. But its good. Even though it means Father and I have so many more responsibilities now. Without the war, several things might not have ever happened." She squeezed his hand. The repetitive motion was soothing and she couldn't help but smile at him. The war caused so much, an alliance, the freedom of the Matori which she was kind of happy about. A lot of good things came from the war, though some Obans likely wouldn't agree.

"Mm." Seb gave an assenting noise of acknowledgement, but he had felt fear before. Mortal fear. The war had been somehow different, maybe because he hadn't been on the front lines.

"I didn't agree much with the old king. I can say it now. I also couldn't think of a better man to take over the job than your father." He smiled at Naevius with his head tilted slightly downward. "he was always logical and fair with us in managing the compound. I mean, it was terrible. We lost great men and women, but were it not for the war I may never have met you. Not like this."

Nae could feel a slight blush rising to her face. He always did know how to make that happen which wasn't really a bad thing because she knew he wasn't doing it to just flatter her or anything, he actually meant everything he said. "Hmm. I agree. My dad's cousin may have not been the best King. But I'd like to think he did what he thought was best for Oba, even if it wasn't really. Oba I think is better now for many reasons, not just our won." She smiled at him. "We did lose many great warriors and civilians but they too believed they were doing what was best for Oba. I hope they've come to terms with my Father's ideology. I know it couldn't have been easy for some to just retreat as we had." Being a king was a dangerous job, just the title alone was.

Sebastien agreed. "Of course. I have to say most of the people I knew agreed that Oba should conquer and grow. They didn't want to consider reaching out and growing, but now look at us now. They grumbled about losing, but now Oba is growing faster than it would have trying to rebuild the cities it had destroyed. Obans and Matori live as far as Neued now. Enough people agreed with opening our arms to others that the war just... ended. It was a sad feat, but it's come to calm." He shifted and pulled Naevius into his lap. "and now there's love I never would have imagined."

Naevius nodded along with him as she agreed with what he was saying, often thinking the same that Oba was growing more now than it would have if they had conquered Tendaji. "The release of the Matorian slaves, I think, might have been the biggest culture shock to most. My father and mother never really kept many and any they did keep were treated, I'm sure, much better than any in other noble's house." She could only imagine the horrors those poor souls faced. Just being in captivity for that short time during the war was terrifying. Nae couldn't imagine living her whole life like that. She sighed and relaxed visibly as he pulled her into his lap. Her head lay on his shoulder. "Me either." She said simply.

"My family never had slaves, and there weren't any at the compound, so I can't say I'd ever met any before." He had been the very furthest thing from nobility all his life. "I don't think slavery is a particularly kind practice anyway, and culture shock or not, I'm glad it's been disallowed."

He smiled when her head hit his shoulder and he stroked her hair.

"I dream of the day we can show our affection in public." It may be never, he knew that, but he did think about it.

"I agree with you...on both matters." If only it were that simple. Nae supposed it could be, they were often seen together since the war as Sebastien had taken on training her in the ways of beast taming. Sure she knew some from watching and learning from her father so many years ago, but it wasn't like the kind of stuff she was learning now.

So Sebastien's family hadn't owned slaves? That wasn't a bad thing yet it made her wonder. She didn't really know much about Seb's past but Naevius didn't really think this was the time or place for it. "With as far as the Obans have come, culture wise, you never know how much further it may change. I've already heard about ex-matori slaves marrying their masters. Who knows people might actually be okay with Us and we're just over thinking it." That was wishful thinking and she knew it. People didn't like to budge when it came to royalty.

"I haven't been far from Oba, except in times of war, but this last time? With the Alkidike extremists? It was as if Oba had never come charging down the canal. I think most have forgotten their hatred for us," Seb said, and then shook his head, "No. I think they've forgiven us. What we did cannot be forgotten, but the past is in the past. We are a part of Tendaji now, not just their attempted conquerors."

He leaned over and kissed Naevius' temple. "And you and I, we've changed too, alone and together."

"Perhaps you're right..." Naevius thought about this for a moment. It was hard for her to really know how things were going out there, with the relations among Obans and the other races as she was either in here or the capital. Which the capital would likely always be a little somewhat biased so Nae knew she didn't have the best sources of information. "It's just hard to say, seeing as how I don't have too much interaction with any Tendajians or Obans that do a lot of business with them. Perhaps that is something we should try to do. Expand our business northward. It would be difficult, with the compound here. But probably not impossible. What do you think?" She blushed with his kiss and words about their changes. Nae had to agree. They'd both changed, but for the better she thought.

"I've met quite a few Tendajians on my days off," Sebastien said with a nod. He had less and less of those now since starting Naevius' training, but that wasn't really a bad thing. He was just as glad to spend time with his love. "You wouldn't think anyone would want to move here, but they have, from far and wide. It's interesting," he said, "and people on their way to Matori always have to make their way through if they want to stay safe."

He considered the business option and tilted his head. Hm. They could get a smaller farm, maybe, and a bunch of salesmen and tamers to head it... maybe even of other races to avoid intimidation or racial bias? "Sure. That might be good for us. Your father must be proud of you, taking things over like this."

"That's good to know. You'll have to kind of keep me updated if you hear anything interesting okay?" Naevius asked, giving him a kiss on the cheek as if to say pretty please?

Naevius smiled at his approval as Seb's approval did mean a lot to her. "Perhaps it's an idea you can help me draw up and the next time I go to the capital and I can having something to propose to my Father. I might have taken over the business thing but all in all it is still his. But yes, I'd like to think he'd be proud of me. I don't get to see him as much anymore but it hasn't really changed our relationship at all." Nae was happy to be able to say this. Her attention drifted to the food that started to have a nice aroma which meant it was likely done. "Hungry?" She definitely was.

"I will," Sebastien said, and then gave Naevius a little squeeze as she spoke of her father. He missed seeing the man around himself. He may never again with his new rank!

"Good. I'm glad. I thought everything would change when you went away to the capital. I can't tell you how happy I was when you came back." He grinned and stole a lingering kiss, then nodded. "Definitely. Can you grab the knife?" And that was that before a rather pleasant dinner together, all alone.
