"Cassie." The whisper sounded loud in the silence of night, and Aizuri-e nudged his mate's shoulder with his nose, trying to wake him from his sleep. He didn't know why neither of them woke up when the... thing outside their little thicket was dropped off, but it was there now and couldn't be ignored. There was no way Aizuri-e could sleep now, not with the memories of that night when he and Cassiel visited the Wishing Star were fresh on his mind and, apparently, seem to have been answered. He was vibrating with excitement, and when Cassiel only snorted and kept on sleeping, Aizuri-e huffed out an annoyed sigh. "Cassie, wake up. You've got to see this!" He nipped at Cassiel's mane, tugging sharply to get his attention.

Cassiel woke up with a start, blinking around blearily before his eyes adjusted and landed on Aizuri-e. Seeing his mate up and wide awake made him groan and tuck his face back against his side to try and fall asleep again; it was way too early to deal with... well, anything right now. What's worse, he was cold without Aizuri-e's body heat next to his. "Darling, the moon is still too high in the sky to get up. Can't this wait until morning?" he grumbled, not bothering to hide the whine in his voice. He tried to ignore the dry itch of the scales on his tail that said maybe he should get up -- at least to soak in the water for a few minutes. Aizuri-e probably needed a soak at this point, too. Maybe that's what this was about?

Aizuri-e tried not to get too annoyed. He could be pretty grumpy when he was woken up early, too. If it were anything else, he would have agreed and let Cassiel go back to sleep. But this? Couldn't wait. "If you don't get up now, I'll dump water on you," he treated in a sing-song tone; it was hard to be too mad when every fiber of his being was brimming with excitement. They weren't far from the beach; it would be easy to scoop some of the water up in his tail fin. "Cassie, please." He nudged Cassiel a little harder, and that mixed with the urgent tone of his voice seemed to be doing the trick. When he had his mate's attention, he turned his head to look at the mysterious gift that had been left near them. "Look," he whispered. He needed Cassiel to confirm that he wasn't just seeing things.

A basket.
All of Cassiel's thoughts came to a screeching halt as he stared at what had his mate so worked up. He hauled himself up to his hooves, but instead of inspecting the basket he moved past it out into the open, looking for any signs that someone may have visited here during the night. Cassiel knew very well what Aizuri-e thought this was; he didn't even need to ask him, but that wasn't going to stop Cassiel from seeking out a logical explanation for the sudden appearance of the basket. But there were no noticeable signs that someone else had been here. Who would just abandon a basket? With complete strangers, no less -- and without even asking if they could raise the foal inside? His tail swished with anxiety as he turned back to look at the basket an Aizuri-e. "Who could have just left their child here?" he wondered aloud, already eyeing the distinctly familiar markings on the basket.

Aizuri-e knew his mate would be skeptical, but that was okay. Cassiel humored him enough to take visiting the Wishing Star seriously to ask for a child, even if he didn't really believe in the magic of the stars. It certainly wasn't the foal part that had Cassiel holding back; they both wanted to start a family of their own. The wish they both made together that night was sincere. Surrogates were always an option, of course -- they had discussed that in length, but finding a suitable and agreeable mare had proven difficult. "The stars did, Cassie. Itegami chose to give their blessing to us and grant our wish. I know you don't believe in the Gods like I do, but you can't ignore the colors and markings on this basket. A combination of both of us." Aizuri-e tossed his head to get his mane out of the way, muzzle held up in the air to show off the markings on his neck.

What Aizuri-e said was true; the markings on the basket were uncanny. The colors, too. Slowly, Cassiel draped his tail fins over the top of the basket, awed in the way the pink on the basket matched so perfectly with his own hue. He wasn't sure he would ever be able to accept fully that this was a gift from the... stars... but it was certainly a gift in its own right. If they could keep it. His tail fins curled around the basket protectively. "Aiz. We... can't just keep any basket that we find. We don't know what could be inside, and we don't know if this foal belongs to someone else. I mean, how can we be sure?" As much as Cassiel wanted a family with his mate, he wasn't willing to take away someone else's to have it.

It was a valid concern, but it made Aizuri-e's heart ache nonetheless. He was in love with the idea of the little foal growing inside this basket already, and having to give it up would be very difficult. Still, his thoughts paralleled Cassiel's -- he'd never be selfish enough to steal another soquili's child. "Then we make our home here for a while," he decided. "We can watch over the basket right here where it was left. If it does belong to someone else, then they'll be able to find it again here, and we can keep an eye out for distressed parents." It was really the best they could do to return the foal to its parents -- if it had any. The thicket they'd taken to sleeping in shielded them from most weather and kept them warm enough; it would be safe to keep the basket here. "... I don't think that's the case, though, Cassie. I think this is ours." He curled his tail fin around the opposite side of the basket, cupping it delicately between both their tails. Really, it couldn't be safer than here with them.

Cassiel decided then that he couldn't allow himself to get too attached to the basket. It was obvious his mate was already completely gone on the foal inside, but if Cassiel let himself hope, it would be hard to comfort Aizuri-e if they end up finding the parents of the lost little foal. He was certain it would be easy to distance himself and remain objective about the basket... even if seeing the mixed colors of their bodies on a basket that held a foal inside made his heart soar. Please, Itegami, let this foal be ours without breaking the hearts of others. Cassiel wasn't sure if Itegami was the right Celestial God to pray to in this situation, but Aizuri-e had said that it was Itegami who blessed them with their wish, so that's who he would beg to let them have this -- regardless of his beliefs. Cassiel would give a whole lot for Aizuri-e's Gods and spirits to be real if it meant they could have a family.
"Hey." Cassiel grinned and pressed his nose to Aizuri-e's for a moment, nuzzling his mate affectionately before pulling back to meet his eyes. "No matter what happens, we're gonna make it work. If today -- tonight, rather -- isn't our night, it'll come soon. We're going to have our family, whether or not it's the stars that give it to us. And if this really is a blessing from Itegami?" His tongue stumbled over the pronunciation of the name, "I'm just grateful they didn't have either of us carry the foal and skipped right to the basket."

The comment startled a laugh out of Aizuri-e. "I don't think I've ever heard of the Gods granting their blessings in that way before... but who knows? We are partially aquatic, and the seathi males are the ones to carry their children. I have to admit, you'd look..." Aizuri-e paused to let his gaze wander over Cassiel's body for a moment just picturing the idea, and fought to hold back an amused grin. "Hilarious. Don't worry, though. I'd still love you," he teased, bumping his head against Cassiel's shoulder. He let his head rest there for a minute with his eyes closed, smiling when he felt Cassiel curve his neck to drape over him in an embrace. He appreciated his mate's attempt to lighten the mood. After a while of standing in comfortable silence, he pulled away. "I'd suggest we both go soak our tails for a bit, but... I don't want to leave the basket alone, and I don't want to bring it with us either," he said, his muzzle twisted in a frown. "Why don't you go first? Then after I'm done we can tuck in back to sleep."

Oh boy. Aizuri-e was going into protective warrior mode. Cassiel simultaneously wanted to let out a long suffering sigh and a chuckle of amusement. Soon enough he knew Aizuri-e will want to have rotating sleeping schedules too, to make sure one of them is always awake. He looked forward to having both their families around to help when they brought the foal home.
If. If they brought the foal home.
Cassiel knew it was dangerous to start thinking in 'whens' instead of 'ifs', at least where this particular basket was concerned. In a surge of affection, Cassiel wanted to tell Aizuri-e what a great dad he was going to be, but he held his tongue. It was true, but he didn't want to get Aizuri-e's hopes up more than they already are. He wished, briefly, that he could fast forward through time and see how all this was going to turn out.
"Alright." He smiled. "You get that basket bundled up nice and warm, and I'll be back soon."
It may not end up being theirs, but Cassiel was determined to be the best father he could be in the meantime.
