Dare you walk in the woods at the end of night?
Chancing grasping hands and terrible light?

Night was lightening, and Maku was beginning to awaken from his more dormant state. Maku didn’t exactly sleep - always, he was awake. But the sleepy, slow-moving, generally pleasant plant being was not his ‘true’ state. As the first diluted rays of the sun touched the leaves of his canopy and began to tint the sky, he stirred into action. Daytime was his time, the time when he fed, the time he was truly alive, and he prepared to greet it.

Sephos, for his part, had never seen daylight, and he probably never would have to experience it’s piercing, burning rays. He was underground, tending to the plants in his cavernous nursery of a hive before he went to sleep. Deep in the woods, bound by the routines of the nature around him, Sephos never expected that his patient, pleasantly uneventful night would be suddenly overturned…

Eridia was /once again/ lost in the wilderness. She was pissed at the fact that she lost herself the same way. Everything was going smoothly at the coliseum until she lost her bet and her escort. The a*****e better be looking for her or else-- “Off with their head!” The highblood yelled and later laughed. She was reading way too many books.

The sky was getting lighter, daylight was settling itself slowly and that’s when the teen started to panic. She started to think that the daywalkers could indeed devour her whole, she wished not to experience that nor witness someone getting eaten by one of them… yet. It seemed she only traveled deeper and deeper into the forest. Strange beasts noises could be heard… An occasional hoot or snarl. The lavanderblood picked up the pace as she felt the sounds get closer and closer ******** met face to face with the side of a rocky structure-- a cave to be precise. She pulled back and had her hand on her now bleeding sniffnode and looked at the weeds that grew around it. Seemed like the perfect place to hide in the middle of NOWHERE and would guarantee some protection. With that in mind, she made her way in just as the first rays struck the forest.

Yet there was one thing she didn’t know…This cave was actually a hive… That belonged to someone she met near a certain pile of hay….

Maku was alert, ready for the coming day. His roots twined and untwined in anticipation of his meal. He was hungry - always so hungry after a night, though Sephos was by far not the most energy consuming troll he had taken care of. Ah… memories.

A sound - could the daywalkers be moving already? Could the time of his feeding be so at hand? It was early yet… however, such anomalies had happened. Roots untwisted themselves from their resting state as his legs, revealing grasping thorns and ridges - the better to hold, tear apart, and devour the undead - as he turned towards the source of the sound.

There was a shambling, trolloid shape very close to his charge’s hive. Maku uncoiled faster, alarmed. Too close. Sephos’s presence lured the Daywalkers, something that treebeasts had used to acquire prey more efficiently since the dawn of time, but they should not be so close, not so soon into the day. Grasping, almost toothed roots snaked towards the shape, reaching for this first meal…

And then Maku, a little myopically, realized that the troll was alive. The tendrils retreated back to his rootlike legs - Maku ate the risen dead, not the living… or the soon to be dead. Such was the fate of unlucky trolls caught out in the wilderness in the day. If they could not hide or find shelter, or did not have the strength to fight, the sun and the daywalkers and the beasts that roamed the sunlit lands would claim them. Then they would possibly rise. Then Maku would eat them. And thus the cycle of life would continue.

Normally, Maku would leave such a troll to their fate, but they were right at his charge’s hive. He had to do something, hadn’t he? ”Hoooom...HOOM…” he approached… and then recognized her. It was Sephos’s friend!

The Treebeast hesitated. His troll did not have many friends, and Maku felt he should preserve them. That seemed like something he should do. ”Hoom.” Gently, he tapped at the door, before - very carefully, with a massive woody hands - opening the door. He picked her up with his other massive, woody hand, and - gently - swung her inside before closing the door behind her.

There.

All done.

Sephos heard the door close and held up a portable light source towards the sound. He was clad only in a wrapped sheet - just enough to keep the chill air of the tunnels off of his skin - his clothes and hat hung up to air out for the time being. “What the hell?” he muttered, picking up a small knife, just in case, as he walked up the levels of his hive towards the entrance, his light held up in front of him…

Was she imagining things or did the little rays of sunlight played a number on her eyes? Eridia stopped her tracks as something approached her rather quick. It had to be a creature dwelling inside the cave-- surely it had to be. The highblood attempted to grab her weapon in order to protect herself yet she froze. Then the creature stopped and she blinked back to reality, realizing that thing, which obviously wanted to kill her, was Maku. She remembered him very well also the fact how gentle and slow he was back then. It was weird to think such a gentle creature, that actually got along pretty well with her father, would KILL her.

In a blink of an eye she was picked up by the lusus and in the cave-hive she went. Eridia silently screamed and ran away farther into the cave. There was no way that lusus was going to feast on her, nope. Though at least she found a place to stay during the day the high blood was not pleased. Hopefully, that green blood nutjob wasn't around. She couldn't possibly bear the humiliation nor she wished to have a small audience for her imminent demise.

So there she ran and ran and ran until a small light came to view. An exit maybe? Eridia picked up her pace and…. She slammed into something, more specifically, Sephos. The teen let out an audible scream as she made contact with the little kid.

“s**t!”

Sephos raised the light in surprise as he saw an undefined, slightly billowing shape barrelling towards him down the tunnel. There were footsteps, so it wasn’t a ghost or anything, but something had gotten into his hive. Something running, very fast. He didn’t have time to get his knife ready before he was barreled over. “Augh!” he said, shoving them off of him as fast as he could. He brought the knife up, frightened… when his now-discarded light revealed, from its less than opportune angle, that this was a troll. A living troll. A troll he knew. “What the ******** are you doing in my hive?!” he snapped at them, knife still in hand. He had learned, fairly swiftly after contacting civilization, that other trolls were not always trustworthy or safe. Hence the knife.

Eridia indeed trampled, or rather slammed into someone. Of course she tripped over them during the process and the highblood rolled off them rather lazily. What the hell just happened? Her first thought was that someone else had her same idea, that they were just looking for a place to hide but then she heard his voice. Her mind quickly went back to the Harvest jubilee. Oh my gog. No way. She shook her head as she whipped back to reality and stood up to dust off the dirt on her dress. Last time they met, they were almost about the same height but now, she was far taller, stronger and definitely (hopefully) smarter. The highblood looked around and pretended she didn't see Sephos until she looked down and "gasped". "YOU…. YOU’RE THAT GREENBLOODED SWINE!"

She looked around dramatically. "WHAT! YOUR HIVE??” Oh wait, it was his hive. Why was she even surprised? Hadn't his lusus dragged her in? Maybe her act made her forget. “Oh yes, your hive. Well your luuuusus dragged me in here dear and TRUST me..." Eridia leaned down to reach his eye level.

"I am not happy to be here." She looked at him straight in the eyes and as a glint distracted her gaze from the greenblood she blinked, noticing he had a knife in hand. Now wasn't this adorable. This night was supposed to be magical and romantic, she was supposed to spend time with her date watching trolls fight and what not. But now, her being lost and (worst) being inside his hive, then she was obliged to make her day better for herself no?

"Aw, do you really think you can haaaarm me with your little toy?" She cooed followed with a chuckle. "Cute." She tried to reach over to pinch his cheeks, not even the least intimidated by the other.

"Isn't it past your curfew dear? Shouldn't you be asleep in your 'wittle wecupewacoon'*." She said in a childish tone.

Yes. The troll from the haystacks. Who had stuffed hay down his overalls. Next time, he would wear a shirt and underwear. He glared at her, defensively - it had been a stupid hay fight, it was over, what was her problem.. he said mildly in response to her outburst. He stood, meeting her gaze dead on and glowering at her for a moment. Since clearly she was just going to make a lot of noise and not stab him, he lowered his knife - an answer of sorts - and stood up. "Dunno why he threw you in here." He muttered as he retrieved his lantern, ignoring her antics. It must have been the daylight or something - Maku was very different in the sun, not that Sephos got to experience much of his lusus's daytime attitude. At the most, he'd seen Maku fueled with sunlight at the cusp of evening or on the rare occasions when he'd had to take shelter outside his hive, in the woods. It had been wierd.

Whatever. His lusus did his own thing, and throwing this annoying purpleblood into their hive was apparently one of those things. "Okay." Sephos said, mostly to himself, as he tried to figure out what to do with this... thing.

And then she pinched his cheeks. "H-hey!" he snapped, shoving her away, his cheeks flushed green where her hands had pinched him. PINCHED HIM. PINCHED. HIM. Not even Maku did that. "I was tending my plants, you dumb moobeast!" He snarled at her. He wanted to rub the ache out of his cheeks, but his hands were occupied with a knife and a lantern, and he did not want to drop either. "Why aren't you in your recouparoon?!" he fired back.

Yeah, actually, that was a good question. What was she doing out in the depths of the woods, alone, far from home, in the day? Was she just that stupid?

"Awww weally?" She said in a squeaky voice as she got 'shoved'. "You were tending your wittle plaaaants?" To be honest, Eridia just wanted to piss the child off, as a way to remind him to be respectful to his highblooded peers-- something she had sort of learned the hard way. The teen attempted to pinch his cheeks once more as she cooed. "Still a gwowing twoll needs plenty of weeest to gwow big and stwong! So newer fowget to go to sleep eawly!!"

Eridia laughed at her own silliness and shook her head. "Oh deary," She exhaled, trying to stop her laughter. "Being all serious now that sounds soooo... BORING. Wouldn't sacrifice my beauty sleep for something as dumb and, what's the word, ah yes, worthless." She said as a matter of fact, straightened herself and stretched. The lavenderblood seemed a bit stunned when the other fired his question at her. Now she wondered how was the best way to explain a child what she was doing at this hour. Was she to go through all the details excruciatingly or simply just say that she was in a date? Oh this was a trivial question indeed. Eridia pondered her possible word choices and mentally came up with the perfect answer. The highblood smiled at the kid when she crouched down to meet his eye level.

"Well deary... you see, when I don't need my beauty sleep and I'm looking wondrous during the night, some trolls have to guts to ask me to get together with them for some alone time. We talk, we dance, enjoy ourselves and occasionally melting in each other's embrace... at the right moment."
Eridia cupped her own cheeks as her mind took her back to a few hours, picturing everything and giggling unconsciously yet as much as she wanted to recall all that, Eridia snapped herself back to reality. "However I shall not discuss my intimate life with a mere child, nor specify that we spent our time brushing each our lips against each other, and whispering sweets nothings as we watched some fights at the coliseum."

Whoops. Her cheeks flushed bright purple as she noticed her mistake and cleared her throat to change the topic. "Either way, I can stay up late. You in the other hand dear, should consider sleeping more. You wouldn't want to be a midget for the rest of your short life, right? Want me to take you to your recuperacoon?" Maybe that's what he needed, after all who didn't like to have someone to carry them back to their room?

Did she have a speech impediment? Had she bitten her tongue? Either way, her speech pattern was getting on his nerves. She was getting on his nerves. He wasn't the sort of troll to react to such things with instant violence, though he could. She was in his hive, all alone, no one would ever know. Dead trolls, after all, made great fertilizer.

That said, the thought - at present - didn't cross Sepho's mind. The thoughts at present were wariness - she was acting suspicious. No troll he had ever met was ever considerate about things like health or growth, and she certainly didn't care about him... about as much, he figured, as he cared about her. Which was barely enough to rub two roots together.

He was relieved (though he didn't show it) to hear her drop her obnoxious lisp, though he wasn't so sure about the subject matter. Yes. He got it. She was on a date. "I don't care." he said bluntly. He really didn't. He knew about the quadrants and buckets, and though his lusus was very thorough in educating him about how that sort of stuff worked, he really didn't want to hear about it from another troll. Especially not this troll. Any troll. It was just awkward.

What he wanted to know was how she'd ended up near his hive, out in the middle of the woods, far from the coliseum, but he had a feeling that if he pressed her for the answer, she would say something else he didn't want to deal with. He was beginning to realize that she was just not going to shut up.

"I've got more plants to take care of." he said, moving out of arms reach, "But... um.." He faltered for a moment. She was in his hive, and neither of them were about to stab each other, which meant he was a host. Maku had been very clear about what hosts did. "... But it's down that hallway, and three rooms on the left if you um..." he offered her the lamp, "If you want to use it." he said reluctantly.
