Evan had called Cambria as soon as he realized Zack was home. It had been a late shift at the bar, and when Evan got home he immediately realized things were out of place. Of course, while he hoped it was Zack, he was worried it was a robber. So he'd tried to prepare himself for the worst, and fought through the panic attack—and then burst into tears anyway when he walked into Zack's room and saw him there.
Of course, Zack only tolerated him being there for a few minutes before he kicked Evan out, so Evan made it out to the couch in the living room and had called Cambria immediately. It was late, but he knew about her night time activities, so he figured she was used to being up late. Besides—she deserved to know. And Zack liked her more, so maybe he'd talk to her.
…Not that something like that was easy to admit, so Evan sat on the couch quietly, sniffing and trying to will away all his stupid emotions while he waited for her to show up.

When Cambria got the call about Zack being home, she had gotten out of bed at once and proceeded to the male’s apartment, letting herself in about twenty minutes after she had gotten word. She wasn’t sure if Zack was awake, or even where he was in the apartment, so of course, she went right to Evan, poking him gently. “Where is he, Ev? He’s home? He’s really seriously home? How is he?”
She paused, some things finally sinking into her mind, some fears surfacing. “…Is he alone…or did he bring home a prostitute or something…is that where he was? Was he getting into all sorts of trouble…?”
For a moment, Cambria wasn’t quite sure why she was here. Of course she was worried about Zack but…
Well but if he had been out running around with other girls or guys or doing drugs…well. She wasn’t quite sure how to handle that right now.

"What?" Evan snapped, immediately confused. "Why would he bring home a prostitute? He's got—"
Evan just seemed flustered and scrubbed his face quickly. "No, he came home alone. I think. Or, if he did bring someone home, they were long gone before I got here. But he was talking, and alive and he seemed like he was in one piece. But he kicked me out of his room, he said I was too loud, I was asking too many questions. Nagging." Evan drew in a shaky breath. "It's probably all true, but I was worried about him. And I know I'm not good enough for him, but you are. So I—can you go talk to him?"
He gestured over the couch, towards the door to Zack's room. "He won't let me make sure he's okay, but if you're here, he'll open up to you. Please," he insisted. "I'm not going to get any sleep until I know that Zack's okay. And I know you've been worried sick. He seemed—I mean, he seemed a little roughed up, but he said he got jumped? But he said he took care of it. He's okay," he insisted—partially for Cambria and partially for himself.
Because it just felt good to hear.

Cambria nodded, eyes sliding to the closed door. “Hey, Ev…why don’t you get us some drinks? Something good, maybe boozy though. If he got jumped…I don’t know. He’ll want to get if off his mind, yeah?”
She reached out and fluffed Evan’s hair. “I’m gonna go in and talk to him, you can bring the drinks in a few minutes, okay? Then he’ll feel better because I’m there and we can all cuddle or something.” She liked Evan. A lot, and she did know that he liked Zack. A lot…and since they had both been worried sick about Zack…they both deserved to cuddle.
“Maybe some food too…I’m completely craving grilled cheese…or do you think that’s too much work?” She gave the dark haired boy her very best pout and made her way to Zacks door, knocking softly before going in.
“Hey, you’re not busy with a prostitute in here, are you? You okay…? I was really getting worried about you, Zack.”

Evan nodded and pried himself from the couch; he wiped his eye on the sleeve of his shirt and hastened to the kitchen. He didn't speak or protest or try to peek in on Zack; the thought of being useful in the kitchen was just about as reassuring as he could ask for.
When Cambria knocked there was no response, but there was no resistance either. The door wasn't locked, and the lights were off.
Zack was freshly showered, lying on his back in the center of his bed with a pack of ice over one eye. He half heartedly lifted himself up to peek at her when she entered and then flopped back down with a grunt.
"Prostitute? …I don't have to pay for that s**t," he grumbled, adjusting the bag on his face. "…Evan called you?"

“What do you mean you don’t have to pay for it. Are you saying that people just stop you on the street, fall to their knees and beg to blow you?” Cambria moved over to his bed and lifted a hand to gently stroke his hair. “Of course Evan called me. We’ve been worried sick. I’ve spent more time with him in the past few weeks than I ever thought I would…he’s a really nice kid. We’ve gotten really close lately. Thanks to you.”
The girl sighed and shook her head. “Are you going to be okay though? Someone jumped you, that’s what Evan said…I have him making us some food so he should be in soon…”
She didn’t really know what to say…so instead, she climbed right into bed with Zack, reaching down and taking one of his hands. “…Love you.”

Zack just snorted, though it wasn't immediately clear what had set him off. "Yeah, you too," he grumbled. He was tired and ornery, but hearing her say that she loved him was at least a bit reassuring.
A few months ago, the words wouldn’t have meant anything. He didn't care about love, just about getting by and making the best of things. Having a pretty lady by your side was just a perk. But things were different now, insofar as he had gotten used to her. Most of the girls he'd been with he kept for a short time and then moved onto the next one. A week or two, here or there. Long enough to make Evan jealous, and long enough to get the satisfaction he wanted while still staying fresh on his feet.
Zack didn't really like being bound to a relationship, but he couldn’t deny that there was something nice about having a girl fuss over you.
He let her take his hand though, and even scooted over a bit to make more room for her.
Zack was tired; he didn't want to socialize, but he didn't have the energy to push her away. But he didn't want her to think that she was some weakling, either.
"Evan's going to worry the life out of him. If you've been spending a lot of time with him, I'm sure you know he's paranoid. Kid things the world's out to get him."
And maybe it was.
"…Guess he's lucky he had you to look after him while I was gone. Didn't mean for that to happen. Didn't mean to make you worry."
He gave her hand a half-hearted squeeze, figuring she'd know what it meant.
"I take care of myself, Cambria. I'm not the sort of person who's just gonna keel over. If you've gotta worry about someone, worry about Evan. I always pull through, no matter what."
Zack was resilient, and he couldn't help but want to make sure he wasn't weak. He didn't need protection, or fluffing up. He'd be fine in the morning, after rest and food (which, now that she mentioned it, sounded great). He just didn't want to deal with the questions.
He could hold up a lie, but if they kept picking at the seams, he knew they'd find some weakness, eventually—and it wasn't exactly easy to cover for 'I got kidnapped because I'm an Agent of the Negaverse and the bad guys took a cheap shot at me and played dirty so I had to let some enemy of mine rescue me when I couldn’t get out on my own'.
Better just to give in to what they wanted tonight, sleep it off, and hope they'd be too distracted tomorrow to fuss.
He was tired, but he rolled over a bit, pulled her close, and kissed her.
He could think of a few ways to keep the questions at bay.
