Jayce Walker didn’t hate his day job but he also didn’t particularly like it. It was, let’s face it, stunningly boring. Vinyl Solution was a tiny little shop down an alley in the city centre of Destiny City. How the owner even made enough money to pay the rent for the joint was beyond Jayce. On a good day they maxed out at about five customers. Old school records were either stunningly unpopular or else nobody just knew this shop existed (Jayce liked to think it was the former, I mean, hello, mobiles did all the work now.)

The shop was a cluttered nest of old vinyl records, stacked precariously here and there with very little organisation. When he’d first started Jayce had tried to make some sense of thing but had given up. He had a basic idea of where things were, particularly the popular things and that was it. He offered very little assistance to customers and let them wander about as he played games on his phone.

Today was a day like any other. He had a bowl of cereal in front of him at was staring at his phone. "Damn it Tubbs, stop eating all the food."

Miranda had wandered into the record shop with a curious expression. It had been a while since she'd stepped into a shop like this, but then they seemed to be becoming rarer and rarer each day. She didn't bother the man behind the counter yet, stubbornly trying to see if she could find what she was looking for amongst the stacks of records on display.

She pursed her lips a little as she tried to look through what she could before she just gave up with a small sigh. Apparently a slightly disorganized record store was no place for an independent mindset.

The young woman wandered over to the counter with a smile that she hoped was friendly (and pleading), "Excuse me? Can I get some help, please?"

If someone from a customer service role one day made a list about the most annoying sentences customers could say, that one would have to be near the top. A spoonful of cereal halfway up to his mouth paused, some of the corn flakes falling back into the bowl.

Jayce eyed her with a deliberately blank look. “What do you need?” He was weighing up having to get up and let his cereal go soggy against helping her out and possibly getting her number because let’s face it, freckles were damn cute.

The blank look he gave her didn't seem to register, or if it did she just decided it wasn't anything against her. Most likely it was the former.

What she did register is that he was in the middle of eating something and her smile sort of crumpled a little into a small frown, "Oh! I'm sorry...You must be on break."

A sane person would question why was he manning the counter if he was on break? That wasn't something she thought about, clearly.

She reached up and fidgeted with the strap of her bag, "I just ... I was looking for a present for my dad, he collects different types of records. Was hoping maybe you had something by Billy Idol? Maybe something he doesn't have yet, of course. I can wait until you are done eating though! I am not in a huge rush," Miranda put on a smile again.

“I’m not on a break,” Jayce told her, while putting the spoon down and giving his cereal a last mournful look of farewell, knowing that by the time he returned it would be a soggy disaster. But he’d chosen cute girl over food and he now had to live with that decision.

“Billy Idol, yeah? We’ve got him in here somewhere,” he stood, stretching his arms over his head as he walked around the counter. “You know what he’s got already?” He waved her to follow as he moved towards one of the stacks, trying to remember where he’d last seen an Idol record hiding.

"But you can fi--..." He had seemingly made up his mind and so she just let out a small sigh and vowed to herself to make it up to him later. Miranda understood the sadness of returning to a soggy cereal, but she didn't know what she could do to make up for said sogginess.

She'd figure it out later.

Miranda followed after him as she focused on the task on hand, "None of his actual albums, just the greatest hits stuff, but you never really get to know an artist if you just listen to his popular stuff," she said with a small shrug. "My dad uses music to help him write sometimes," she added a as she gazed around. "He has a eclectic sorta taste," Miranda said with a tone of fondness to her voice.

"I am looking for a couple in particular," she'd done research, like any good college student does when faced with a problem, "there's one called Whiplash Smile, and Cyberpunk. He might also like Devil's Playground?"

“Sure, sure,” Jayce said, only half listening to the spiel about her dad. These days he treated even the suggestion of happy family life with good deal of scepticism and annoyance. At least she knew what she was after and wasn’t going to have him dig around for ages, rejecting everything he found.

“Alrighttty, we should have at least one of those around here. Pretty sure I saw Cyberpunk under this pile.” As he spoke he simply pressed a hand against the stacked records and pushed it over. They toppled over and came to a rest messily against the next stack. At least now you could see what there was without lifting them all up.

“Nope, not here.” He move along and repeated the process. “Well here’s his christmas album. Yikes.” Happy Holidays it said on the cover. Billy Idol had turned around from his piano and was giving his fans his best serial killer grin.

She didn't seem to catch on to his dismissive tone, or if she had she was just content to meander from topic to topic as it pleased her and for now she was focusing at the music. "Really? That'd be really cool to get at least that one," Miranda sounded pretty excited. Even as the records slumped along like drunken sentinels.

"..H-Hope nothing got damaged," the young woman murmured with a large amount of sincerity.

With some interest she gazed at the album he mentioned, "Hmm! I'll take that just for fun. What kinda music are you into...Uh..."

Wait! Did he have on a name tag? Oh gosh...he must think she was so inconsiderate.

“It’s all fine,” he told her, waving a hand as if to say ‘settle down girl, I know what I’m doing’, just as half a pile slid off the table and to the floor. Jayce simply stepped over it and moved on, winding his way through the cluttered room with absolutely no cares at all.

The christmas album was left there for Miranda to grab, Billy Idol grinning up at her.

“Different things. I play drums in a band but it’s mostly angry punk rock s**t from when we were fourteen and really depressed about life. These days I listen to club music and minimal techno. Ever heard of Droplex?”

He did not have a name-tag because name-tags were for losers.

Miranda shifted her shoulders and accepted that it was, indeed, fine. He would know better than her.

She plucked up the christmas album as she wandered behind him, listening to what he had to say. Small talk was soothing, but it wasn't exactly small, not for her. Miranda liked getting to know about people and what made them tick, "I don't think I heard of Droplex," she admitted with a small shrug.

"I guess I'm mostly just a casual music listener," she said with a bit of a chuckle, "like when I am doing my crafts and stuff."

She made another attempt to get his name so she wouldn't just be awkwardly trying to get his attention with a 'hey you with the face', "My name is Miranda, by the way."

"Nothing wrong with casual. It’s good to like a lot of different things. Met this guy once, all he would listen to was 60’s pop, absolutely nothing else. Literally nothing else. He was a complete wacko actually- aha!" He pulled out a record, brushed some dust off and held it up triumphantly for Miranda to see. It was Whiplash Smile, with Billy Idol staring moodily out at his fans.

"Jayce, by the way," he grinned as he held it out for her to take and then practically dropped it, letting her catch it or finish its descent to the floor, whatever came first as he turned quickly and marched back towards the counter with a, "hang on a sec."

He fiddled with his iPhone, connected to the speakers and a second later a song started to play. Well, it was the perfect time to share. "This is Droplex."

I'm sorry I've been so slow! ;o;

"Ah no. I don't think I can do just one genre forever, there's so much variety out there to listen to! I'd be missing out if I just stuck to one thing," Miranda shrugged her shoulders a little bit," but to each their own."

It was almost immediate as she reached out and luckily grabbed the album up before it fell to the floor, the casual way he did it didn't even seem to panic her as much as the towers of falling records did earlier. "Pleased to meet you, Jayce! Thank you for finding these records for me, it is much appreciated."

Miranda dutifully followed him toward the counter, but obediently stayed on the customer's side and watched what he was doing with some interest. When the music started playing she grinned a little, "That sounds really interesting, I might have to check out more."

Ruriska
It is okay! I know stuff has been going on in the shop/meta and what not. Plus real life! I've just been a little slow myself because RL is a butt. <3 I am enjoying our time so far!

"You should. I’d offer you a half-price record but they aren’t exactly the type to bring their stuff out on old-school vinyl. Even if there has been a bit of a resurgence lately." Jayce left the music on and leaned his elbows on the counter. "We used to get just middle aged and old people in looking for stuff but now we get the hipsters wandering in as well. Bunch of wankers mostly. One of them spent ten minutes telling me about how becoming a Buddhist vegan had changed his life before I told him I didn’t give a ******** pushed himself straight and reached for his cereal, running the spoon through the corn flakes that were starting to look a little limp. "So you want me to find another record or is that good enough?"

Pales
Yeah, me too. <3 I should get faster now meta stuff is winding down!

She wrinkled her nose a little as Jayce described some of his customer base. That sounded boring and annoying - even both at times! Miranda shifted her shoulders, "I suppose it is a wonderful thing to change one's lifestyle, but if you didn't ask then you didn't wish to know."

That sorta thing was a little 'too much' to tell to random stranger.

Miranda gazed at his cereal as she put the records on a vacant spot on the counter and began to fish for her wallet, "That'll be it for me," she admitted with a small smile. "Wanna go out to lunch if you're still hungry? I feel bad for making you abandon your cereal like that, looks totally gross."

Ruriska
Arrarrarr. Stupid late tag for you. So so so sorry. /sob

"You should have seen his face, though." Jayce laughed, remembering cutting the guy off mid-sentence and the sheer outrage as he had stormed his vegan a** out. "I honestly don’t care what people do with their lives or what they eat, I don’t want to hear about it. My work day is boring enough as it is."

He reached for the records, entering their prices manually into the system because his boss still hadn’t figured out how useful barcodes could be. "I’ve never turned a free lunch down in my life." He grinned. That had been much easier than expected. "You cool to wait an hour until my official break? Oh and it’s $45 for the two. Cash or card?"

Pales
i'm useless /cry
