“You have finally learned.” Was the phrase she was greeted with in the morning after her run in with the quhar herd and the janarim in the tree. Today was the day after she’d confronted and not died to a janarim. He had been watching she thought! But she didn’t fault him for not helping; if he always helped she’d never learn after all.

She grinned in response; she was still feeling good about it. She was learning how to deal with janarim it felt like. She wasn’t bashing her head against a wall anymore. If she thought of them as slower, heavier, and far more vicious xaraan it rather worked. And she could take what she learned here back to her home and try things there. Or maybe she could try hunting wild xaraan now… She never had actually; only janarim! Everything else had already been brought in and mostly broken and tamed by the time she got to it.

“Good use of sound to keep it away... and good that you didn’t go for the head.” He said with a chuckle. She looked up at him and he grinned. “Xaraan bite do they not? Well a janarim has teeth... teeth that tear whips apart.

“I hadn’t thought about that.. I got one hit off on the nose…”
“Surprise and also good. Nose is sensitive. But feet better. As a janarim needs those more and their face is rather armored.” Eiso chuckled again and handed her breakfast. “Eat quickly. There is another group nearby that you may learn something from as well. We will set traps this time. ”

“We?” She cocked and eyebrow and thanked him for the food before digging in.

“I need to bring back one for client.” He laughed. “Trip is fun but waste if no profit is made! After you try I will show you how I do it.”

Finally! She thought with an inner grin, I’m finally going to see how he does it! Of course she’d have to try first... but to actually see how he did it... or at least see the results and try to replicate or figure out how he did it, was fine by her.

The next morning she was out before dawn preparing for her traps when a trap was sprung on her. She knew janarim were in the area; it was why she was setting up snares in places cubs would hide while the mothers hunted! What she hadn’t realized is that she was the prey… and that the hunters two young male janarim hunting her had been following her since dawn. Perhaps Eiso had known of them but not told her to see how she dealt with it, or perhaps even he hadn’t noticed. Sanele had only noticed that Czar was wary and on edge that morning… and that was perhaps the one thing that saved her life.

Because of that small warning, she was also wary and extra alert. Her whip was ever ready and she’d asked for a larger knife to fight with from Eiso. He’d given her a machete; good for clearing away plants and for attacking. His approval told Sanele that she’d been an idiot to go so long without a better weapon. Armed and feeling slightly safer, she was just setting out the first snare when something off brought her on guard. It might have just been the wind shifted and brought her the scent of the janarim on the other side of the rock, it might have been the scrape of its scales against the rock; it might even have been her instincts warning her to run… whatever it was it alerted her and she hopped back and grabbed both whip and machete and waited, bright red eyes darting around nervously.
Her eyes noticed the shadow of the large protruding rock from the sand dune was off. Larger than the rock was and definitely differently shaped! Her actions let the janarim know the game was up, so the hidden one behind the rock jumped up on to and roared while the other dashed at her from behind.

Cursing her luck, Sanele spun and slashed her whip across to entangle the charging one’s leg and brought the machete down on its head. She hated to do so; but right now it was life or death. It wailed in pain as she didn’t succeed in completely killing it in one blow and she had to spend a precious second to finish it off quickly. She slashed it across the throat instead this time and had to toss herself out of the way as the other one leaped from its rocky position at her.

She cracked her whip hard, creating a loud slapping sound like a miniature thunder clap. The remaining one growled and backed off… Leaving her to bury its dead brother and mourn the loss of life.
