One, two, three…

Again.

…four, five, six…

Again.

Naqenni swept her practice blades, shifting the balls of her feet and body angle as she moved through one of her more recently-learned routines. It wasn’t complicated. They wouldn’t yet teach her more complicated ones, but frustrating as that was, it mattered little for the moment. The more she learned of blades, the less she favored them. Still, they would be a ready and necessary ally if ranged attacks failed. And, her tutors taught it. She wouldn’t settle for anything less than perfection in that regard either.

Even months afterward, the events of one of her first sessions with one one of the older alkidikes of the tribe still left her stinging and cross to think about it. So she swung again, and again—and again, until her breath caught, throbbing to a familiar pounding rhythm in her throat. At each finish, she would tell herself, ‘One more time…’ and at each completion: ‘And just once more after this…

Only when she knew absolutely that her muscles had numbed to the point of making her motions sloppy and unfit for repetition did she let up. At that point, she dropped her weight back to the nearest tree, eyes shutting, shoulders to the bark, and breath coming in deep, audible pants. Then, just as her own breathing began to quiet, she heard footsteps.

Antennae twitching, she pulled away from the trunk, straightening her posture, rolling her shoulders back, and squinting towards the sound.

The Only Black Uke

Ceylinae was once more on the move, running along a path that she'd discovered not that long ago while she was out on her last solo training exercise. There were several obstacles, such as a fallen tree that went over a ditch to run across, a rocky out cropping to climb, and a tangle of tree roots to navigate that would help her to become more spry. She wanted difficult challenges to over come and the path that she'd found was just that. Not to mention that if she went in the right direction, and climbed the right trees, she could see for quite a distance! She was yet to be lucky enough to spot anything really note worthy but she felt that it was the sort of perch that would one day serve her well given the view.

That view was what she saw as the prize at the end of her grueling training regiment, one that she was planning to run at least once, maybe twice, depending on how she did at it. If she fell on an obstacle she'd stop and repeat it a few times in an attempt to master it, not wanting something so simple as a rock or tree to beat her.

As she hurried along toward her destination something up ahead caught her eye causing her to come to a sliding halt, her long braid swishing back and forth behind her. Her aqua colored eyes locked on the other Elaria girl before her and after a moment the name came to her, "Naqenni." What was she doing out here? Was she training too? Did that mean that Cey was falling behind if someone was actually out before she was?! No, no that couldn't be it... it wasn't that she was falling behind she had just been busy with other forms of training she reassured herself, hands clasping together for a moment behind her back, "Training too, sister?" She asked, wondering both if she was training and what sort of training she might be doing. Something similar to Cey or did they have different training methods? Curious about the answer she decided that she could hold off on her training for a moment longer, just long enough to get her answer but that was it!

Naqenni’s attention flicked over Ceylinae.

One of the ‘three’, she had known Ceylinae — or at least known of her — for as long as she’d known anyone. After all, for some time, she, Cey, and Ku had been the only children to the tribe, preliminary gifts from Elzira and their future, and in the sense that they came into the world together, they were a trio—asked for or not. Privately, however, Naqenni still considered both competition. Allies in the future, yes, but those who ought one day follow in the wake of her leadership. She curled her toes and shifted her weight.

“I’ve seen something you haven’t yet,” she said, ignoring her sister’s question intentionally and cocking her posture to rest her hands near to her hips and the practice blades there, expression casually smug. “Just the other day, further than we’ve been permitted to go. If you have time in your busy training schedule, though…” She nocked her head a half inch to one side, “…I’d race you there. If you have the energy. I know you like to start early and may have worn yourself out…”

Seen something that Cey hadn't? What was it? Where was it? Did it have anything to do with the Limbara? That was probably unlikely, right? Lumikani said that they were only around the great volcano which wasn't anywhere near close enough to home that Naqenni should be able to see them... right? Cey's mind continued to race, trying to figure out what it was and her eyes got a little wide when the other Elaria girl admitted that what she'd seen was out beyond the borders that they had been given. They were allowed to explored but only until X place, something that made things difficult at times when it came to Cey's self imposed training but it seemed as thought Naqenni wasn't following the rules.

What should she think about that? Should be worry about the other girl? Should she be upset that she hadn't thought of it first? What would the others in the village think? Would they see Naqenni as a brave explorer and Cey only as weak for sticking to the borders she was given? Her antennae bounced like crazy at the thought, "Huh? Of course I have the energy! I'm not so weak that the little training I've done so far has worn me out!" Ceylinae said, hands coming to rest on her hips, her aqua eyes narrowing a little, "In fact I was just about to go and run an obstacle course so of course I have plenty of energy!"

"Since I don't know what this new thing is that I 'haven't seen yet' you will have to lead the way, Naqenni." She said, motioning to the other girl to lead.

So she had already been training.

Naqenni made mental note, and shifted her weight, listening halfheartedly until Ceylinae came to the end of her spiel. There, a slow smile spread into a cocked grin on Naqenni’s features. She notched her head to the left—and with no further indication of their direction than that, broke into a sprint. Despite her greeting, she had no doubt that Cey, much as she trained, had the energy to keep up, but it never hurt to push herself, particularly with those best suited to testing her limits against. Simultaneously her closest sisters, and her fiercest competition. One day, if her mothers were right — and Naqenni didn’t doubt for an instant that they were — they, Cey and Ku, would fight at her side in battle.

And by the goddess, if she had her way, they would be fighting one at each side and one half step behind her lead. That, however, was a play to be made another day.

For now, she had the earth beneath her feet, the great, misty jungle around her, and a destination to reach. Sucking breath to the pace of her livening pulse, she pushed her pace faster, testing the limits of her legs—and twitching her antennae to gauge Cey’s location.

Cey bounced back and forth on her feet for a moment before she moved to follow along after Naqenni, eager to get to wherever it was that they were going. Obviously it had to be something interesting or else she wouldn't be interuppting the training of someone else. It might be something worth seeing, something that would only come to improve Cey in the long run. It was worth checking out at least once, right? Yes, just once, then she'd get back to work on her own training.

As they hurried along Cey's aqua eyes went back and forth, taking not of the patht hat they were taking, hoping along over the various rocks, fallen logs, and other things she could find. She always tended to take the path with the most obstacles that she could, though in doing so she realized she was falling behind Naqenni a bit. No, no that wasn't something that she could allow to happen! If anyone else saw it, if they saw her running so far behind her sister they would think her lacking! Hopping off the rock she was on she rushed forward, trying to cover the ground between the two of them.

"How far off is this special thing of yours, Naqenni?" She called out, wanting to know where they were going, how far off it was, and if they were going to be there soon.

As Naqenni’s heart rate picked up, thrumming to a rough beat even as her feet flit light over the mossy earth, a tingle rippled beneath her skin. Heat, and anticipation. The thrill of pushing her body towards a sting in her veins. The rush that she imagined might be similar to a hunt, when she got the opportunity to try—but, she did have company, and the last thing she wanted was to tire in front of her company. So, though she could have pressed longer at the sprint, she let her pace ease when Ceylinae went out of her way to hop obstacles, and fell into a familiar rhythm instead.

When the other girl scrambled to catch up and came beside her, Naqenni’s lips twitched again towards a smile. This time, the settled on something more subtle and smug.

“It might be a very long way,” she said. “Or just up the bend. Why. Are you tired already?” With the question, she shot her sister a glance, expression alight with fresh amusement, and no small amount of challenge. Though she knew what she would hear in response, it never seemed worth it to resist the urge to goad. So she didn’t bother trying. “We can slow down, if you like.”

The Only Black Uke

"Eh? That doesn't make sense... it might be a long way or around the bend...?" Cey asked before she also asked, "Do you even know where we are going, Naqenni?" Was she getting them lost, was she? Surely not, what reason would she have to get them lost? Unless she was trying to get them far away so she could get Cey lost? If Cey got lost she would look inept! The idea had the girl shaking inside at the mere thought, not wanting to appear as weak in front of anyone, nor did she want to look like she was lost or scared! She would have to keep Naqenni in sight was all.

"I'm not tired!" Cey declared, not wanting for Naqenni to think for a moment that there was something wrong with her or that she was getting tired from such a little run! This was nothing compared to what she did on her own... though she supposed it was very different in that she wasn't the one setting the pace or picking the trail this time. Instead it was up to her sister to pick and Cey had to follow. She wasn't sure what she thought about that but felt that if she could at least prove that she wasn't tired or falling behind that it should be alright, right? It was what she hoped at least.

After a moment Cey quickly said, "I don't need to slow down, Naqenni, but if you do let me know and we can slow down. I'd hate for you to need a nap before we get to your special place, sister."

Naqenni scoffed, torn between amusement and something else altogether. “Of course I know where I’m going,” she quipped. “Saying that was my way of telling you I’m not telling you until we get there—you’ll see. It’s not that much further. I’m sure your legs will survive.”

And there it was, finally. Ceylinae’s return jab.

Naqenni couldn’t decide whether to be pleased by the quip back or not. After all, if she and her sisters were going to one day traverse into the world at large, a little verbal insult couldn’t be the undoing of their composure, and it seemed only right to give them all practice at that. Not that she herself was perfect at handling such things, but never mind that for now. On the other—well, she didn’t need a nap.

She opted to demonstrate so through actions instead of words, picking up her place. Despite her prior statements, given the pace they were going, they were close by now, and not long later, the approaching, subdued rush of tumbling water became audible, the soft hum of it seeming almost to vibrate through her tentacles. Her stride gained an extra, anticipatory bounce to it. Soon, Cey would see.

She could probably already hear.

She wasn't going to tell Cey where it was that they were going? That meant trusting her sister and following her to wherever it was that they were heading? Not the best of situations but she supposed that it was something to do, right? An afternoon spent doing something out of the ordinary. A change of pace would be good for her, right? Alright, so she'd follow along after Naqenni for now and save the obstacle course for another day. Not as though a bunch of fallen trees and rocks were going to just get up and walk away, right? The mere thought of that was just foolishness.

As Naqenni decided to pick up the pace Cey hurried to join her, pushing herself to come up to run alongside her. If she came to run next to her sister then maybe she could push her that way? A grin appeared on Cey's face as she came to run next to her sister, her long braid swishing behind her like a flag, before she turned to look at Naqenni, "Is this it, sister? Come on! Let's hurry and get to your special place so that I can see it before the sun sets!"

Before sunset.

Naqenni stifled a snort, but held her tongue in favor of opting for a different sort of retort tactic. Closer. Closer. Closer. Perhaps it was easier to hear the rush of water over the rest of the competing sounds of the jungle because she knew the nature of their destination and what to listen for, but no matter. Any advantage was still hers to make use of.

The opening to the underground river that Ai had showed her some weeks back was not overly wide, but more importantly, from this particular angle, it was nearly invisible, the lip of it closest to them being just high enough to mask the fact that the ground was gone entirely scant inches later. Naqenni sucked in a breath, narrowed her focus, and pushed, increasing her speed whatever fraction she could for a handful of seconds and then, at the last moment, dropping—and skidding, coming to an even crouch not far from the lip of the yawning cavern that opened into the tunnels below.

“Be careful not to fall, sister,” she said airily, not quite managing to remove the breathlessness from her tone. It didn’t matter much, after all. They were here.

The Only Black Uke

Cey came to a slidding halt, her arms moving in a rapid, windmilling manner to keep from risking falling forward off the cliff... only for her to overcompensate and fall backwards onto her butt. The girl sat there for a moment before shifting so that she was on her hands and knees, crawling forward to look off the edge of the cliff that the two of them had found themselves on and she could only stare, her eyes quite wide, "Waaaaah?" What was this place? Oh! It looked so cool from up here even if it was at the same time a bit on the terrifying side.

Leaning a little further forward Cey squinted, trying to get a good feel for what was down there. As she looked around, her gaze flicking back and forth, both the antennae on her head and the tendrils hanging down set to twitching rapidly, "Wow!" This place was amazing! And it looked as though there was a cave down there? Turning to look at Naqenni she asked, "What's in the cave? Some sort of giant monster or something? Limbara, maybe? No... those are near the great volcano... they'd never go in a water cave..." She was just hoping against hope that one of them would get lost some day and end up within her line of sight. Preferably before anyone else spotted the beast and sought to take it from her she thought to herself.

"Hmm... keldari...? Maybe... definitely not any tintural..." It was too far down and seemed like there would be too much water for that sort of thing to live there. The only thing that really seemed like they would be down there were possibly kedari as well as fish since there did seem to be enough water for them.

Naqenni eyed her sister, watching on in private amusement as her arms swung, followed immediately after by a rear-first topple to the forgiving earth. Though, if she truly thought about it, her sister tumulting over the edge had been a very real risk, that end had not been her goal—and, in fact, was a distinctly unwanted result. This, though — the moment of scrambling and lost balance — was perfectly in line with her aimed-for expectations. She tipped her head to peek over the lip herself.

“Just the river,” she said. “And whatever lives within. I climbed down before, some, but I haven’t been deep. We could explore. If you’re not scared, that is. What did you do for training this morning?”

As she said it, Naqenni stood and walked the ledge, eyeing the rock for the place she had begun to climb down before. The gouge in the earth, while fairly deep, was not unscalable, and several portions of it were angled just enough to allow travel down to the rock banking the underground river. How far back it went in either direction, she didn’t know, but now, with young company and no adult to attempt to impose restrictions, she had more freedom to experiment. She intended to make the most of it.

Upon finding the place she had scaled downward last time, Naq crouched, angled herself, gripped the lip, and lowered her legs over, beginning a downward trip.

"Hmm... whatever lived within, huh? So it's a mystery." One that Cey wanted to figure out the answer to. What was in the cave, was it something worthy of trying to tame... well, when she was older at least. She wasn't strong enough to go wrestling any potential pets at her size after all. Not that she would admit that out loud, not wanting anyone to think she wasn't strong enough... even though she kind of wasn't. Limbara were far out of her league, a keldari would likely squeeze her to death, and tintural... hm, well, she supposed that was a little more possible since they seemed rather amiable from her few run ins with them.

"Eh? You actually climbed down there?" Was she telling the truth or just making it up to sound good in front of Cey? Her antennae twitched before she said, "Normal things, what we do in our lessons I tend to do over to make sure I've gotten it down, running, some climbing, and carrying around heavy rocks. I try a little of everything that I think will help me." She was even thinking about making herself a weighted belt to wear while she was running but hadn't quite figured out how to make it yet.

Watching Naqenni as the girl started to climb down Cey shifted where she was kneeling, "Hmmm..." So they were going down? Alright, well, if Naqenni was going then she had to go too, right? If she didn't she'd look bad so here goes she thought to herself, scooting forward before she started to climb down, "I guess this can be good for training as well." Not to mention getting a peek at what was in the cave, it was win-win.

“That is what I said,” Naqenni said. Even as she spoke, however, most of her attention was focused elsewhere: on the crimp and grip of her fingers to the stone and the brace of her feet as she found footholds; on the balance of her weight and relative availability of further brace points on the way down.

A certain, hammering rush came with climbing—thick, heavy, and hard in her chest whenever her body was suspended at a fatal height—distinctly different and less pleasant than that of running, in Naqenni’s opinion. But the only way to combat it was practice. Their sister-race, after all, was born for the jungle, for the trees, and climbing in that sense ought to be natural to her genetics. There was no reason or excuse for fear.

Regardless, her goddess would not let her fall. She was destined for greater things. This thought, as it generally did, eased the throb of her pulse and relaxed the pinch of her muscles, helping her to make the rest of the trip more smoothly. It did not remove the solidified sense of safety and satisfaction that came with the reassuring press of hard ground beneath her feet.

She could feel the chill of the rock through her leathers. Glancing down the long tunnel and the shadows and reflecting glimmers of light that lurked there, her pulse picked back up to a much more favorable, giddy tempo. “Don’t slip,” she ‘cautioned’, already touching a hand to the wall herself and then starting down the narrow ledge of rocky ‘bank’ by the side of the tumultuous river. “I’d hate to have to explain how I tried to stop you, but just couldn’t convince you it was too dangerous to handle…” Antennae twitching as the air chilled, her gaze slid over the moss native to the cave, and in her distraction, the goading in her voice slipped away, forgotten, and replaced by musing curiosity. “How long do you imagine this has been here…the rock is so smooth — do you suppose earthlings have walked here first…?”

Or perhaps, she thought, they would be too weak to even make it into a treacherous cavern. It seemed possible.
