The diner was one of those places where people just sorta wandered in and out - no one cared so long as you had the right currency when it came time to pay the bill. Miranda had simply wandered in and sat in a booth and got out a small bag of plastic googly eyes with sticky backing, she picked two of the biggest ones she could find and stuck it onto a nearby napkin dispenser.
There. Mission complete.
She moved the napkin dispenser to where it was looking more at her through the plastic googly eyes, and then she got out the rest of the crafting supplies she needed while she waited for the waitress to come by to take her order. "Which color should you be?" She asked thoughtfully to a row of socks she laid out on the table in front of her. There was a green and black argyle, a white with heart prints, and a plain green sock.
Miranda became lost in thought - this was a major decision for her right now. iStoleYurVamps Let me know if I need to change the setting or whatever.

You didn't just pull out a bag of googly eyes and not grab the interest of a 14 year old sitting across from your table. It was not the norm and like every good teenager, anything not the norm was to be questioned and interrogated. For better or worse. Staring, (which was in and of itself impolite), Jane ignored her mother's constant staring at her phone and opted to target her wayward curiosities to someone else. Someone with googly eyes one their table along with socks like it was Martha Stewart crafty hour. "The print." She said, with a sudden loudness. "It's nearly valentines day. So if you're going to do something, best to just go full hearts." She hadn't a clue what this woman was doing or why but hey, she'd asked. "What are you doing anyway?"

"Ah, thank you," Miranda responded as she put the other socks away and pulled the heart-printed sock toward her and began to tug at parts of the sock to get it to where she wanted it to be. "Mm? Making a sock puppet while I wait for the waitress. Didn't feel like reading a book!"
Miranda glanced up at the younger girl and flashed a small smile and then turned her attention to the sock puppet in process. "I mean it isn't like I plan to leave a big mess."
Around this time the waitress flounced on over, "Better not, hon. What'll ya have?"
Now, Miranda looked up at the waitress, "I'll have pancakes with strawberry syrup please! Also a glass of milk to drink, please."
The order taken, the waitress flounced back behind the diner's counter to drop off the order.

Yes well of course the heart printed sock would be a good choice, Valentines. They already had them in stores even. Not that she was eyeballing the many chocolate covered things. No, not at all why would one think that? "Sock puppets?" She asked, curiosity rising. It wasn't everyday you saw an adult making those things- in fact, Jane was sure she'd not even made once since- actually she made one no less than a year ago, thanks girl scout summer camp. The woman had a point though, getting crafty was at times more fun than reading. Still, was a bit odd to do it in a restaurant. "Huh." As Jane's mother chided her briefly, telling her to stop bothering the other customers Jane nodded with dutiful obedience. Then promptly ignored her mother. Who was pretty much ignoring her by remaining glued to her phone. "See, strawberries. Valentines sublime-er, subliminal messaging." She coughed, trying to sound like she knew exactly what she was talking about. "Why are you making them? You a teacher?" If she was, Jane certainly didn't recall her from her elementary school days. Pales I almost called them starwarsberries idek

"Yeah! It is kinda fun to make them when you're just sorta sitting around and doing nothing, but I'll probably have to go home and finish this one up since... most of my craft stuff is there," Miranda observed, but she didn't seem to feel silly or ashamed.
A shrug of her shoulders, "It's fine, I am enjoying my chat with her!" She doubted she was heard by the absentee parent, and secretly sort of motioned for the younger girl to come sit in her booth. The girl seemed bored, so she may as well keep her occupied for the moment.
"Must have been subliminally worked into my mind since I was very young, then!" Miranda grinned, "I've loved strawberries since I was real little. Though, I'm a bit indifferent toward Valentines day... Hmm.. Only half worked I guess!"
When she was asked if she was a teacher she shook her head, "But I am thinking about switching my major to be a kindergarten teacher or something. I dunno yet! My name is Miranda." Might as well offer her name first before the parent starts paying attention and starts claiming something weird was going on. Maybe. Who knows. iStoleYurVamps But starwars was LAST MONTH it would be deadpool berries now. ...Enjoy my word vomit apparently. Didn't think i'd type half a novel at you tonight.

This lady had a valid point. Games on a phone or just making stuff on the go was boring after a while. Jane gave her mother a stink eye, (which she was lucky enough to have not been caught giving), Jane just continued one with the interaction. This woman was far too interesting anyway. Plus being patronized by her mom with crayons and a coloring place mat at 14 was painful. Jane's life was suffering teen angst for being far too young looking and her parents just not taking her seriously. Ever. Secretly the girl wondered if she took up goth how her parents might react. Probably with awkward trips into hot topic. "I'm Jane. Just curious, since Sock puppets are like- that's kid stuff." Said the kid. "Most adults I see doing that its for their kids or they teach. And I don't see you with kids unless-" Jane looked around. "You an aunt?"

"Yeah. It kinda is, I'll give ya that! But it is fun, so I am not gonna let age stop me," she replied cheerfully as she stretched at the fabric a bit more and then began to fit the sock over her hand to start forming the puppet.
The waitress stopped by and placed a glass of milk on Miranda's table and then left to attend to other customers.
When asked if she was an aunt she shook her head, "No, my brother and sister are waaaaaaaay too have babies yet," she giggled a little. "It is just ... a stepping stone. One day I wanna make like an actual full fledged puppet, y'know like on the television shows or movies. I just ... gotta get the bravery to do it I guess! Too scared of screwin' up something," Miranda admitted sheepishly as she gently pushed in a bit of cloth to form the mouth. "Jane is a lovely name, by the way. Nice to meet you!"

Jane could kind of respect that 'its fun so try and stop me' mentality. But- "jane is what parents name their kids when they aren't creative." That got her mother's attention. "JANE!" "WHAT? You could have given me a cool name. Like Raven. Or Esmeralda. Heck mom even Renesseme is a cooler name then Jane." She shot back. Her mother sighed heavily and once more appologized for her daughter's behavior. Before going telling her daughter she had to make a phone call and to stop harassing the other customers. Jane just rolled here eyes. "..........." Then looked back at the puppets. "So.. Puppets like muppets or like.... Dark Crystal puppets?"

She giggled a little bit and then had to fight from just straight up laughing at the interaction. It was easy to laugh because she wasn't the one trying to raise a 14 year old. To Miranda it was amusing, but to a parent the sass attack was probably proof of why it is a good idea to eat their own young.
Trying to be responsible she cleared her throat and she nodded, "Like muppets yeah! Maybe one day something close to Dark Crystal, because that's crazy complex for me right now," she replied.
Perhaps she shouldn't encourage Jane by talking to her, but meh. The kid was fun to interact with.
"What do you wanna do when you're all done with school and on your own?" Miranda asked, careful not to say 'grow up' anywhere in her sentence.

Jane was smiling, and with her mother gone to go chat on the phone if left the teen able to talk as she liked. "I want to become an astrophysicist." She stated as if it was not an exceptionally complex field of study. "So I can lay the smack down on people who think the world is flat. Like Neil deGrasse Tyson, only I'm a girl, so my smack downs would be even more brutal." Her food was on it's way, and Jane pulled back only to eyeball it before looking back at the puppets. "That or just a vet. I'm not sure yet. Puppets are cool though too. Not a lot of people wanna be puppet masters I'd think." She pointed to the googly eyes. "Or have the humor to just make funny stuff."

"Oh? That sounds very ambitious! I wish you good luck with that," she said with a sincere and cheerful tone. "I don't quite that type of smarts," Miranda admitted with a small shrug, but she didn't doubt that Jane was smart enough for it.
Miranda seemed thoughtful, "I always wanted to be a teacher or an artist of some sort," she admitted with a small chuckle, "so I guess I am pursuing the art part of it, in a way." It was more a hobby than a job right now.
"Being a puppetmaster would be super neat, I think. Just to be able to do something serious or silly conveyed in just a bit of cloth or wood. I guess that's why I am pretty into it! Do you want the puppet I am making when I'm done with it?"

Jane didn't have the smarts yet, but she was aiming high. Plus it helped keep her mom and dad off her back about the whole 'what do you want to be' talks. Sound like you have a plan and they backed off usually. "Well, teachers use puppets to teach so hey, still not off the mark!" She grinned. Leaning into the open path, Jane just kept grinning, which got even wider when the offer or a free puppet came out. "Heck yeah!" She nearly bounced in her seat. "Puppets make for great snapchats and just- She sighed. "I am like 1000 points behind on my story. Puppets can bring it all back PLUS." She held up a finger as if to make a point. "Puppets are a heck of a lot cooler than drawing on your hand. Multiple use for the snaps. And my mom can't yell at me for drawing on myself." Pales IDK what 14yo kids like these days anymore

"Thanks for the encouragement," she beamed happily.
When she accepted the offer of a puppet she seemed even happier, "Did you want the hearts one I am making now, or would ya like one with stars on it? To go with your astrophysicist aspirations." That's part of what they do right? Study stars. It had the word astro in it so...
She chanced a quick glance to see the waitress making rounds with plates of food on a platter, "Might wanna sit out of the way a bit, Jane! Don't want you to get ran over."
The waitress was steadily closing in on their area of the diner. iStoleYurVamps Pretty sure Miranda is in BIG SISTER LUV right now. She finds Jane adorkable.

Jane was grinning ear to ear. "Stars for sure! Hearts is good for the holiday, but I could make space jokes." The waitress finally zoned in and delivered her food, asking where Jane's mother was and getting "I dunno, probably outside yelling at my dad over the phone." As if on target, Jane's mother was outside the window, storming back and forth on the sidewalk, clearly yelling into her phone. "She does that. But don't worry, she'll stop and come in soon." The waitress looked at the woman outside before just going 'okay' and leaving Jane with two plates of food. Jan just snickered. "Hey Miranda?" She held up her phone. "Would you mind taking a selfie with me?"

She stopped working on the heart patterned sock and began digging around one of the star patterned socks at the bottom of her bag. Miranda seemed to carry the world in that back because a ball of yarn popped out and onto her table along with a couple of crochet hooks, she froze to stare at the yarn to make sure it didn't roll off the table.
The yarn rolled to a stop when it bumped up against the plate the waitress put down, "Yer food is here," the waitress drawled with a small amused chuckle.
"Oh thanks!" Miranda beamed happily at the waitress as she wandered off.
"Your mom yells at your dad a lot?" Miranda asked curious as she kept digging around until finally she found the sock and got it out of her bag. "Oh um.. The sock isn't pre-worn cause that would be a little gross," she added with a small laugh.
She blinked at the question before Miranda said, "Of course! I'd love to!" she started to get up - her food could wait a moment while she took a selfie with a new friend.
