Invictus was hiding. Of sorts.
He peered cautiously around the large, pine tree that hid him smaller stature mostly from view, eyes darting back and forth along the path to make sure it was abandoned. He felt guilty for avoiding his father, but he wasn't sure he could handle another large awkward gathering for the day. He knew his father meant well because his father didn't have a cruel cell in his entire body even if it killed him, but sometimes Invictus wished his father was slightly less oblivious to his moods. He knew that his father would be slightly disappointed at not being able to spend time with him, just as he knew that Imperio would still enjoy the party even without his son present.
It was just Invictus hated parties. Being among a large crowded, with everyone talking and laughing and dancing just made the familiar jolt of anxiety run through him every time. He really wished he enjoyed it as much as the rest of his family did, but the idea of spending the next few hours mingling and chatting with everyone just made him want to run and hide forever.
Which was pretty much what he was doing now. He had booked it down the small mountainous path, hurriedly darting between trees as a futile effort to hide. It must have worked because he didn't see his father anywhere in sight.
Or, a small part of his mind whispered insidiously, it worked because no one was coming after him anyway.
He brushed that thought away as he stepped out from his cover. He knew his father loved him.
But, but, but, the thought whispered back. That doesn't mean he likes you.

Ellie was in an unusual mood. While the pink unicorn usually enjoyed wandering about, now she was beginning to feel listless and truth be told, rather lonely. Ellie lived for making friendships and meeting other Soquili or familiars or anyone at all really, but it seemed to her that at present, it had been far too long.
She was tredging up a long forest path, her ears perked up hopefully for the sound of anyone, ANYONE to talk too. She was about ready to collapse on the forest floor and begin to wail when suddenly a dark-coated stallion popped his head from around the corner. Her eyes lit up and she nearly tripped over her hooves in an effort to surge forward.
"Hey, you!" She cried, "You look bored, let's go adventuring!" She had been up and down this path and knew plenty of pretty spots nearby and to go adventuring when someone new would be just what she needed to get her mood up again. In a leap and a bound she was standing in front of the stallion, admiring his coat up close, which portrayed the figure of a bird. She looked from the bird back to the stallion, "I'm Ellie! C'mon, let's go!"Teh Cheryl Aaaaah, I thought I replied to this ages ago! My bad!

Invictus squeaked. Loudly, and decidedly not manfully. He had been so lost in thought that he hadn't even noticed the bright pink mare until she had yelled and surged toward him. He scrambled back a few steps, startled, and he could feel his heart almost jump out of his chest.
"Who, me?" he manages to stutter out, unsure what to do in the face of a stranger--a very friendly stranger at that. "Hi. Uh, Ellie. Urm, yeah. Hi." He shuffles back another step and his back hoof manages to land on an over sized rock, causing him to stumble to the side. He catches himself, trying to hide his ungainly stagger with another step to the side. "It's nice to meet you?" He winces when it comes out as a question. 'Stupid, stupid, rude,' he chastises himself. "I'm Invictus and urm. Urm, what?"
He is so very, very confused.

Ellie didn't comprehend the discomfort of the other stallion, her mind so focused on the adventure at hoof. Everyone needed to go adventuring, she had decided and this stallion looked as though he hadn't been out and about in a very long time. Too long, Ellie thought.
When he finally regained his ability to speak, albeit a bit clumsily, she grinned widely and went on. "You n' me are going adventuring! It's what I've decided and all of my decisions are good ones. Do you like butterflies? Because I know the BEST place for butterflies. And flowers. And butterflies with flowers. It's great! We should go right now, in fact!" With that, she took a few quick steps back and then turned abruptly in the other direction.
What had he said his name was again? Invic--she couldn't remember such a mouthful, so she when she looked over her shoulder to him to smile and beckon him along, she simplified it. "C'mon, Vicky! It'll be fun!"

Invictus blinked, unsure of how to respond. This mare...reminded him very very very much of his father. And mother. And sister. He shrunk in on himself a little at the thought, feeling the old, familiar edge of discomfort of being around such extroversion. A large portion of himself considering turning around and bolting away. He was smaller than the average stallion but had always been uncommonly fast compared to the rest of his family. If he turned around and ran, he could probably outrun this strange, bubbly pink mare. And then all he had to do was make sure he never ever met her again or he would die of mortification.
But, well, on the other hand, he considered, shuffling forward slowly, his head still habitually ducked down a few inches. Maybe being around someone new would be good for me.
He offered up a tentative smile, still unsure if not running away was the best decision but resolute on following through. "I do like flowers," he offered shyly, trotting along side his new acquaintance. Vicky, he added to himself, resigned. She definitely reminds me of Father.

For the briefest of moments, Eleanor wondered if her new friend would be joining her or not, as he looked rather ill. Maybe he didn't like butterflies? She could easily take him someplace without butterflies, or flowers, or flowery butterflies. But then he set her mind at ease and she quit worrying just as quickly. That was settled then. "OH NO!" She suddenly gasped, eyes flying wide as she stopped abruptly and brought one of her front legs up towards her chest. "I haven't properly told you my name yet! What a boring mare you must think me to be!" She gave a dramatic sigh and continued on, glancing over her shoulder apologetically. "It's Eleanor, if you'd like. Ellie is what I call myself, though, because when I was little, I would pronounce it like Ellie-a-nor, so my dad-at-the-time, just told me to stick with Ellie and there we go. I ought to have more dads, I think. Or more names. Maybe both, I dunno yet, but anyway, do I seem less boring now?" She looked at him hopefully and then asked, "How did you get your name, Vicky?"

'Oh boy,' Invictus thought. 'What have I got myself into?'
He flinched a little at her volume, startled and skittish as a newborn colt, but hurries to assure her. "Oh no, you are very interesting, I promise you," he said, nodding slightly and hoping he hadn't somehow offended her. He was just so...scattered sometimes that he worried that he came off as rude unintentionally. He just...wanted someone to like him.
"And Ellie is a wonderful name, it is," he said hurriedly. "And I think having more names or more dad is a marvelous idea." He finished awkwardly, unsure of what else to add to the conversation. Should he give suggestions to either or did just acknowledging her statement, was that polite? What if she wasn't being serious and now he had just made a fool of himself? He could feel a panic attack coming as he mind spinned and he forced himself to take a deep breath and answer her qusestion.
"My name, urm." He shuffled a little awkwardly in place, unsure of what to say. "It's a poem, you see. My father isn't much of a reader, but someone had read him this poem about taking charge of your life, about never backing down, about being unconquerable." He stumbled in his explanation, unsure how to make irrelevant and not a huge part of who Invictus was. "And so, Father named me after the poem--Invictus. He said it suited me, but, well." Invictus offered a shrug and an unsure smile but did not continue.

At once, Eleanor realized she had made a mistake. Something was amiss in this whole conundrum. This stallion was uncomfortable and nothing she was doing, despite her best efforts, was going to make him feel better until she changed something that she was doing.
She suddenly became very quiet and very still. She stared at him, took a step closer and then bumped her nose onto his. "I thought so." She said, stepping back. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were spooky." She didn't stop to consider that her actions just then may have been startling, but she would endeavor to reign herself in. "I shall be more quiet, if it pleases you. Let us be friends, though. Please?" She grinned at him and then began to move off again.
"A poem?" She replied at the mention of what his name was. "Do you know your name-poem? Can I hear it? Well, I can, of course, I can hear perfectly fine. What I mean to say is, would you tell it to me? I should like very much to listen to your name-poem while we journey forth."Teh Cheryl Well, this only took a billion years to reply to. gonk I totally understand if you don't want to continue it, for whatever reason, but I'm equally happy to continue it if you would like to! heart
