Enough dallying about. Kathryn had made excuses to get out of the house for the day and began walking to the nearest, open-spaced, park she could find; which just happened to be Destiny City's biggest park. She was strangely anxious about events to come but she needed answers. It was her hope that Tallulah could help her out. As she neared the park Kat sighed before finding a place where the sunshine, weak as it was, could attempt to ward off the cold that threatened to n** at any exposed, unprotected skin. Rearranging her bag beside her Kathryn brought out her cell phone and scrolled to Tallulah's contact information. Hoping and praying silently that she'd get a reply Kathryn composed her text message.

Quote:
Tal,

I know it has been a while since we last saw each other. I really hope that you are well. If you are still in Destiny City I was hoping if it isn't too much to ask that perhaps you would meet with me sometime today. Something happened last night and I need answers. I was hoping you could help shed some light on the situation for me. I don't know what to do. Help me?

I'll be around Destiny City park near the playground for a while today.

Kathryn McAdams

If only text messaging could italicize key words in her text. She wanted to stress heavily the importance of this meeting. Pressing send on the message she could only sit and wait for a response. She sighed worriedly before pulling out a book. She wanted to read while she waited. She raised the hood on her jacket and slipped on some gloves and opened the book to her marked page and lost herself in the story.

Silverah
ack. totally realized in your reply that I needed to add info, like which park Kathryn is in.

It was a bit out of her way, but it wasn't like Tallulah was doing much these days besides veterinary school applications. A bit of fresh air would be good for her... even if it was cold and she was bundled up like an antarctic explorer. And besides, it had been ages since she'd seen Kat, and she felt really bad about that! They'd been good friends once... before Tallulah got sick and skipped town.

Skipped town multiple times...

Gotten married and didn't invite anyone...

Okay so yeah she was probably literally the worst friend. But that didn't mean she wasn't the kind of friend who could be counted on to show up when someone sent her an ominous text message about, quote-unquote, needing answers.

She had to admit that she was very, very curious as to what this was about.

But, now that she was at the park, she wasn't sure she saw Kathryn. Tallulah looked around, pursed her lips, frowned, pulled out her phone, tapped out a text.

Tefla
Just got here. Where are you?

Sent it.

If one could have gotten lost in a good book it was a good bet that Kathryn was one of those people. Her gaze constantly glanced up to those walking nearby but mainly her nose was glued to the pages before her. It was surprising really that she even registered the incoming text signals that her phone gave to her. Marking her place in her book with her bookmark Kat dug into her coat pocket and drew out her phone before a small smile appeared. Apparently Tal was still in town. Kat scanned the message again before realizing that not only was she in town but she was at the park now too. Her frozen fingers reminded her that making a quick reply was essential.

Typing out a quick reply to Tallulah Kathryn pressed send before standing to scan the crowd. She wasn't sure if she saw Tal's profile nearby but her text would clear things up, or so she hoped. Perhaps they could retire to an indoor location afterwards. Kat was beginning to wonder if an outside meet was still the wisest choice.

Silverah
Tal,

Look for the person who looks half frozen already wearing a purple parka and really colorful gloves. I'm near the playground on a bench.

Tallulah looked up from her phone, looked around, and slapped herself lightly on the forehead. "Duhhh,"

She adjusted her scarf and headed over to Kat. "Hey," she said, taking a seat beside her friend. "Sorry, the hood. I didn't see you."

She held up her phone, as if Kat had somehow forgotten what she'd texted her like literally a few hours ago. "So what's going on?" she asked. "Sorry I've been such a stranger - I hope there's something I can do to help."

Kathryn glanced quickly at Tallulah as she sat down on the bench beside her before sighing deeply. They had been room mates before and Kathryn had kept her promise to Tallulah after finding out her secret life but would Tallulah return the favor. God she hoped that she could even get some idea on what was going on.

"I know it doesn't seem practical contacting you out of the blue but I figured you were my best shot at getting some answers about what I experienced last night. I have a theory but I think I need you to confirm it."

Kathryn paused before stretching out. Her book lay forgotten beside her as her mind went back to the events of last night. When she spoke it was almost with a hesitant manner. "I've been feeling extremely restless of late, and before I get scolded from you, I've taken to walking the city in an attempt to quell this feeling. It hasn't really worked but I keep doing it. Last night was going just like the other times I've gone out except as I was taking a break ... some strange guy seemingly popped out of nowhere. I mean I don't even know where he came from as when I had scanned the street earlier I saw no one."

Kat fidgeted at this point. She could still hear the stranger's voice taunting her. However she couldn't just stop at this point. "So I can't be sure if he was serious or not but he told me he was going to kill me. I panicked, which is what I think he wanted and ran off. I got near the library thinking that maybe I could find refuge inside but the doors were locked. I ducked into the alley to get to the back of the building when I tripped and fell. My side got pretty banged up and I thought I was done for. I'm not even sure on what happened next ... but when I was searching for my dropped bag I found something else in the alley. My fingers wrapped around this string of ornaments and almost suddenly I ...."

Kat paused as a group of people walked by. When she thought she was in the clear she lowered her voice and continued, "I think I transformed. I mean I definitely wasn't wearing my sweater and jeans any more. I was in some odd getup. I could "feel" this stranger that had been chasing me near the alley. He called me a magic slinger."

Kathryn closed her eyes at the memory before opening them to stare at Tallulah. "I didn't know what I was doing but I think I caught him off guard when I deployed pepper spray. Flight or fight kicked in pretty much at that point and I ran away. When I stopped running I realized that I was near my home and was still in this strange outfit. I was almost at my wits end about why it wasn't going away when suddenly I changed back."

Kathryn picked up her book before glancing down at it in her lap. Her fingers ruffled the pages as the silence stretched onwards. Her gaze lifted to meet Tallulah's slowly. "What do you think happened?"

Tallulah's eyes widened. She'd figured that Kat, being too old to awaken as a senshi, was safe from getting dragged into this - that she'd be a muggle forever and safe from all sorts of magical hijinks. But obviously the universe hadn't been keen to leave Kat alone.

"That sounds like a knight awakening," she said softly. "Knights... they're a bit different from what I am, but we're all on the same side. The man who attacked you was probably a negaverser - an enemy combatant. They usually just drain energy and try to claim innocence, so if he said he was going to kill you then he probably meant it."

Tallulah dug around in her bag for a small notepad and a pen. "Here," she said. "I'm going to give you my friend Finn's number. He's a knight like you - he'll be able to tell you more about what happened the other night."

She ripped the piece of paper out of the notepad and held it out to Kat. "I'll tell him to expect your call," she said. "I'm sorry - this isn't a great place to talk about this, and knighthood's not really an area of expertise in any case."

Kathryn took the offered piece of paper from Tallulah in silence. Her gaze memorized the number before she stuck the paper into her book as a second impromptu bookmark. At least this way she would not forget where it was placed. In a way her suspicions had been confirmed. It was hard knowing that her life had changed yet again. Somehow life kept throwing s**t her way. Oh, it wasn't quite fair to blame the universe but Kathryn wanted to blame something and so she did. Sighing Kat glanced towards Tal with a question bubbling on her tongue. Now with the most important topic behind them she wanted to know what had been going on with Tallulah.

Absently Kat cleared her throat. "So that topic is shelved for another person. But still ... it is nice to see you. How have you been since you moved back home?"

Was the catchup with a girlfriend thing Kat's forte, not really, but she wanted to try it anyway.

Tallulah was relieved by the change of topic, because it spared her from talking about magical domestic terrorism in public. "Okay," she said, "so I was sick for like most of 2013? Got back into town in October, went back to school, met a cute med student, and got married in July. 2014, not last year."

She held up her left hand, flashed her rings.

"We eloped, so like, no one was invited, so don't feel bad," she said, glancing down at her lap. People were awfully touchy about that detail.

"Anyway, I finished undergrad at DCU last month, starting veterinary school in the fall." She shrugged. "That's about all. How about you? What have you been up to?"

Kathryn's gaze widened as her eyes caught the flashing of the wedding rings on Tallulah's finger. She tilted her head to the side and then chuckled softly. It was strange that life moved on for her friends and yet she still seemed to be stuck in a stationary orbit. She could not begrudge Tallulah her happiness over the occasion. She interrupted briefly Tal's dialogue with a comment that could not be stopped.

"Oh, that calls for a big congratulations."

Kat listened to the rest of Tallulah's life update before she toyed with the straps of her bag. She had not made any significant changes since moving back home but she had managed to keep her job at the library and she was thoroughly enjoying working for Tony.

"My life definitely hasn't been as busy as yours. I'm still working at the library and I'm really enjoying it."

Kat opened her book and grabbed the piece of paper that Tal had given to her. "Thank you for this. I really appreciate it." She gave Tallulah a smile. "Care for a warm drink? My treat for dragging you out into the cold?"

"Thank you," Tallulah replied, smiling brightly. "It's been... nice. And yes, please, coffee sounds wonderful. There's an Apollo's up the block?"

Picking up her purse, Tallulah got to her feet and pointed towards the coffee shop's awning. "It's definitely a bit chilly to stay outside for too long."

Not, she noticed, that the kids on the playground seemed to mind - but she'd always been more of a summer person, personally.

"Or did you have somewhere else in mind?"

Kathryn tucked her book into her bag and got to her feet. She would have to make the effort to contact Tal's friend sooner rather than later. She needed to know what this new twist in her life meant.

Hearing Tallulah accept her proposal for a coffee and the shop suggestion Kathryn nodded her head in agreement. "Apollo's works well for me. It's relatively close by. No need to freeze more out here than is necessary."

With that said Kathryn hefted her bag over her shoulder. The day had worked out well for her. She had reconnected with her former room mate and had gotten some important questions answered. As she started walking in the direction of Apollo's Kathryn glanced towards Tallulah. She lowered her voice as she spoke, "Thanks for this Tal. I have been literally freaking out. It's nice to have at least an explanation."

Silverah
Do you think this is a wrap?
PostPosted: Mon Feb 29, 2016 9:16 am

"Yeah, of course," replied Tallulah breezily, falling into step beside Kathryn. She was glad to have been her go-to person about all this, even after all these years. Magic and secret identities could be super dangerous in the wrong hands, and Tallulah would hate to see Kat preyed upon by the Negaverse while she didn't know any better.

"Seriously, you have any more questions, just ask. Even if I don't know the answer, I know loads of people who probably do," she added. Honestly, she was kind of jealous of Kat that she got to start all of this magical stuff now, with so many people available to guide her! Tallulah was certain that there were loads of things about her own training as a senshi that she would have done differently now that she was older.

tefla
Yeah, I think it's safe to call this a wrap. smile Sorry for the delay!
