It was an absolutely beautiful day.

There hadn't been many of those recently, as the lands overall had been rather downcast and cool. But today, it was different - the sun, the clouds, all of the good in the world was present. Feeling some degree of okay, Kintori had decided to wander off on her own. Typically located just inside the forest, the female decided to skirt the river, traveling south towards the gulf. Across the river she could view the marshy floodplains - all full of mud and gook due to some recent rain accumulation. The princess of a mare preferred to stay on the eastern side of the river for that reason - avoiding the mess.

Nearing the shore, Kintori decided to stop and take advantage of the grasses while they were still around, rather than crowded over by dirt and sands. Extending her wings, she fluttered them out a bit, allowing them a chance to readjust their feathers, before tucking them back in. She then dipped her neck low, lips grazing the ground, and began to munch on grass. It was a simple day, Kintori decided. And she was going to enjoy every moment of it.

Jökull stood atop the cliff high above the sea the breeze shifting his long blue streaked curly hair. Flapping open his four wings he felt the breeze once again through the white tipped feathers and for the umpteenth time today he wished he'd been born without the heavy Kelpie tail. He loved his mother and father and hoped that they and his brother Gunnar were all enjoying Valhalla's many wonders. He smiled knowing Gunnar would likely be drunk off his arse.
Deciding these were thoughts for another day he whispered his prayers to the gods and goddesses before leaping, his wings carrying him aloft for all of three seconds before he tucked them back and used the weight of his tail to propel himself deep into the icy ocean waters. The splash he made was wide and the waters sparkled in the light before dropping back to become one with the ocean again.
He had gotten quite deep with his initial dive and saw his prize almost immediately. A recently wrecked schooner, its sails tattered and its hull dotted with barnacles before he finally saw his way in. A large gaping black hole in the side. He almost winced at the thought of all the death that awaited him on board but he was more than used to it. Diving deeper using his wings like fins and with the aid of his finned tail he reached the bottom and stood upon the silt, his aforementioned heavy tail weighing him down so he could stand without floating. Stepping through the hole in the hull he saw the bodies immediately, some floating at the top where an air pocket awaited should he need it, though he couldn't help the grimace at the thought of the way the air up there likely smelled. Finally he spotted what he was here for. A large chest laden to the brim with jewels, gems, and gold coins. It was partially open thanks to the water soaking into it preventing it from staying closed.
'Finally!' He thought. He'd been worried those little scamps from the Grail Herd had beaten him to it. Hurriedly he scooped up mouthfuls of the treasures and placed them in the leather satchel he had looped around his side under his wings. When the satchel was full he jimmied a few necklaces up onto his antlers and then grabbed a mouthful of pearl necklaces before he felt his lungs start to burn.
Using his tail and wings once more he rushed upwards breaking the surface the water droplets sparkling around him as he floated there for a few moments, gulping down oxygen through his nose like it was going out of style.
He really needed to be more careful about how long he stayed submerged. He was only a half Kelpie after all. At last he stepped free of the water onto the shore and that was when he saw her...
His mouth dropped open and the pearl necklaces fell to the ground, the gems clacking together slightly as they hit the sand.

Well, it had been a beautiful day.

It started going wrong when Kintori heard a rather loud splash from the sea. She didn't know it, but that was the start of what she was sure to be the souring of her day. That splash was a male - the very last thing she wanted to encounter on her enjoyable day off exploring. She didn't notice him until it was, essentially, too late. Something burst out of the water by the beach, inhaling oxygen like someone had just tried to drown him. Which, she thought later, was rather stupid - because he'd in fact tried to drown himself.

But, in the moment, all she could do was half-leap into the air, jolting backwards at the rather sudden appearance of what seemed to be a very large stallion. Now, even if she hadn't been embittered by her own misfortune, she still would have reacted rather poorly to his unforeseen appearance. He didn't really look all that nice. He was dripping in water, heaving for air, large in stature, and had strange trinkets hanging from his antlers and dropping straight from his jaw.

Ordinarily, Kintori would have approached and assisted in picking up the gems he had let fall from his mouth. They did look rather beautiful - and she'd always been a fan of beautiful things, superficial as she was. But for now, she thought it best not to approach. She merely re-tucked her wings, cocking her head for a second before stepping forward to where she had been a resuming her grazing, as if the stallion had never disturbed her in the first place.

Jökull's eyes widened slightly at the way the mare reacted then chose to ignore him. For the large mixed blooded stallion this was a first. He'd never been so thoroughly snubbed by someone before. Snorting to clear his nose of the stinging seawater he spoke, his voice roughened by years at sea and accented by his northern heritage, "My apologies for... Startling you. I was not aware that the beach was occupied." He blinked slowly unsure of how to continue with this mare just munching away at the grass ignoring him. For all he knew he was just talking to himself! "I um... I'll just go..." His home, the wreck of a ship half submerged and half caught on an exposed reef, was very nearby and he could figure out how to approach the mare after he placed his new treasures with the rest.
Carefully he plucked up the dropped pearls, huffing slightly from his earlier exertion below the waves, he turned tail fin flicking upward so it didn't drag in the sand. 'Strange....' Was the only thought rippling through his mind.

Kintori tilted her head, angling it so that she could keep an eye on the male. He seemed confused by her actions, but she had little time for rude stallions in her schedule. The openings of her eyes turned into slits for a heartbeat when he attempted to apologize before she realized, honestly, how rude she was being herself. Just because he was a stallion didn't mean he deserved to be punished for her bad experiences. After all, Nefertem was a stallion and he was, well, all right most days.

The mare stopped grazing to watch him gingerly pick up the dropped gemstones, her head rising almost involuntarily as she gazed on. "I, uh... excuse me?" The words were out of her mouth before she had a chance to think about what she was going to say - not that she wanted to say anything. "Where on earth did you find those beautiful gems?" Kintori turned ever-so-slightly towards him and began picking her way across the thinning grass and into the sand. "I've always had a weakness for beautiful things," she remarked, smiling slightly.

She stopped short of him, examining his physique. Like she'd noticed before, he seemed to be rather large. The antlers prodding out of her head reminded her vaguely Helberd, and she wondered idly whether or not her children had the same upon their crowns. She pushed that thought away glancing at his wings which also appeared rather large, even in their current sodden state. His hair was in bright ringlets and he seemed to have angry Kalona teeth visible while grasping the gem stones. Lastly, he had a massive tail that seemed to indicate he was part Kelpie - which would certainly explain his sudden appearance from the water. After appraising him the mare glanced back up, looking him in the eyes to notice that the one was scratched and colorless. Mentally, she made a note that he was half-blind. He might be an angry sort, which he didn't seem to be, but if he was, it would be useful to know that weakness, at the very least. Cocking her head, Kintori smiled slightly once again, awaiting an answer to her inquiry.

Jökull halted when she called out to him, admittedly curious as to why she was talking to him now. His good eye watched her as she asked where he got the gems he was carrying and he tried to answer immediately but the pearls got in his way and all that came out was a sputtering noise. He rolled his eyes at himself and let the gems fall once more before ruffling his still wet feathers, water droplets falling from them to the sand, and said "I often find them far below the waves on the ocean floor in wrecked two legged vessels." He paused looking for the words, "I believe they call them water ships. They float upon the water and carry the two leggeds wherever the wish to go." He gestured to the pearls and the necklaces on his antlers before he turned slightly to open the sack at his side letting the gold coins, diamonds, and rubies glisten in the sun.
He was very proud of this haul and hoped to go back before the Corsairs got the rest of it. On a whim he said, "Here, you should have this one. It matches your eyes." He'd never given away a piece of his treasure before but it felt right this time. Carefully he approached her willing her not to run and slipped a silver necklace with a cloudy opal on the end of it from his antlers over her neck, then he backed away quickly not wanting to invade her personal space more than he needed to.

Kintori's head cocked involuntarily at the male's explanation. It did make sense that he had the ability to reach down into the depths of the ocean - she was sure his tail was plenty powerful enough to propel him all she needed. Besides, the ocean couldn't be that deep. She just wasn't sure why he'd want to associate with the twoleggers. Personally, they frightened Kintori a bit - she didn't understand them, and she didn't want to. In fact, she felt a bit smug at the news that their giant floating vessels sunk every once in a while. Idly, she flicked her tail, wishing for a second that she was part Kelpi. It'd be nice to be able to fetch such beautiful things for herself. Then again, it probably wouldn't look all that great on her body...

As the stallion approached her, it took a great bit of Kintori's resolve to remain still. She realized he was being nice and was attempting to respect that. Her breathing grew shallow as he slipped the necklace over her head, feeling the silver slide down her neck, cool from the depths of the water. The male then backed up, giving her room to glance down at the gem. "Oh, it's beautiful," she said softly, smiling to herself. She glanced back up, her expression visibly at ease, particularly compared to her bristling before. "I'm Kintori. Uh, thank you... so much for this. It feels like it means a lot."

Secretly he was elated that she liked the necklace but there was something he'd noticed while he was giving her the bauble. He'd heard the way her breathing had become shallow when he'd gotten near. Was she afraid of him? He didn't think he'd scented fear on her when he'd gotten close. His brow slightly furrowed, though that was damn near invisible under his long bangs, as he looked at her with his one good eye. "A beautiful mare deserves beautiful things." The words were a statement not an observation.
"My name is Jökull. And please think nothing of it, it was just a simple gift among new acquaintances." He said, his Norse accent more noticeable when he spoke his own name. He turned to look at his ship, "Please excuse me for a moment. I must put these treasures away in my home."
He turned to walk away from her, the coins in the pouch making an interesting clinking noise as he walked. He boarded the vessel that stuck out of the water not far away and disappeared into its depths.

Kintori studied the stallion, watching his facial expressions change over like the waves of the sea. Contented, confused, settled upon disappearing? She nodded at his comment, a bit of her old ego flickering beneath the surface. "That we do," she responded with a smile. That smile waned and was replaced with a rather dumbfounded expression as the male, Jökull, turned tail and entered the water. His "home?" Was actually in the water? Kintori's face contorted into a question mark. She had never actually met a Kelpi before, but she supposed it made sense. They were part fish or whatever, so it wasn't all that surprising to see.

What was surprising, however, was the waiting. She wasn't sure why, but she was intrigued by Jökull. He was a strange, if not benevolent, creature. And she was sure the fact that he walked away from her was some small part of it. Kintori, for all her strifes in love, was not used to men simply... walking away from her. Making her wait. And so she stood on the edge of the beach, watching the ripples in the water, awaiting his return.
