Khalel didn't have much time left. Within a few days, she and her boyfriend, Skadravi, would make the trip across the harsh desert sands, on their way to their new home in the tropical island nation of Matori. Yet there was still one last thing that she wanted to do before they departed: she wanted to have a gift prepared for her beau. It would be a surprise, and it would probably catch him off guard, but he deserved it. In her eyes, Skadravi deserved the world and then some. This would be the first of many gifts she got for him, she imagined, but what a better way to start? Ideas danced around in her head, and when they started popping up, the hybrid girl did her best to get out some paper to plan them out.
By no means was she an artist. On paper, the design was not only elementary, but simple. While she did the best that she could to try and depict what was in her head, she knew that the jeweler would have an easier time seeing it in his own eyes. The design on the paper was a ring. A small piece of jewelry, to be sure, but a ring was practical. There was less of a chance of him losing it, compared to a necklace or bracelet, as it would be attached to his finger and sized correctly. She could only hope that he would approve of how she wanted it to look. With the paper in hand, Khalel found herself slipping away from Skadravi for a time, in order to make her way to the jewelry district of the city.
"How can I help you, young miss?"
"Yes, I would like to make a ring for my boyfriend, if possible." As she said this, an elegant, dotted hand extended out with the plans that she had in mind. The jeweler, an older Oban with a kind face, simply nodded, smiled back, and took the paper. "A ring is simple enough to make. I could do it easily, though perhaps it's better if you do it." A chuckle escaped him, followed by a playful wink. He then waved his hand at her, beckoning the young woman to follow him back into his studio. "Come -- I will show you. And let me know what you have in mind, exactly. We can customize it fully, should you so desire."
Khalel nodded vigorously, beaming from ear to ear. As she followed, she explained exactly how she wanted it to be. A ring made of rose gold -- a unique choice, as gold and silver were favored among most Obans -- though it would be perfect for Skadravi. The color would offset his skin tone perfectly, she thought. It would then be set with blue topaz and rubies, a design clearly meant to signify the mixed heritage that the two of them shared. The task took a while. Khalel spent hours and hours in that studio, following the jeweler's directions as directly as possible, until her task was complete. She had finished her gift for her boyfriend, and she couldn't be happier.
"Thank you so much," she told the jeweler before she took her leave of him. "I couldn't have done it without you." Now all she needed to do was present him with the gift. Oh, she hoped he loved it. She had gotten very lucky; the ring turned out even better than she or the craftsman had expected.
