Dyakida was unsatisfied. No tool she bought could replace the ones she had lost, it seemed, and she could not carve a new set without tools she felt comfortable with. She tested the tools on blocks of wood, gathered from the Oban encampment after the battle, and found them lacking:
This tool was not fine enough to carve out detail work.
This one was not strong enough to handle the harder, broader cuts.
This one was too big for her hands, and felt unweildy and strange when she used it.
This one was too small, and wiggled even as she held it.
This one had the wrong handle, and it dug into her sensitive palms painfully, like a knife.
This one had an angle that made her wrist ache after she carved with it.
None fit her, and she felt horrifically morose. Her tools were what she needed. So she had gone to Neued, and searched for her tools in the spoils of war that remained there. The Earthlings there were reluctant to help her, though – ally or not, Alkidikes were still a major source of unease and fear. She pleaded with them until they allowed her to search through the old confiscated items, with Peyla's help.
But Peyla's ability to recognize items did not help her. Hers were not the only tools that had been taken, and Peyla kept finding the tool sets of others. Though these were indeed well made and well loved, they did not fit her. She tried them on wood, as she had the others, and found only disappointment.
They were not hers. They would never be hers.
Finally, after days of trying out tools and trading the small wooden trinkets and toys that resulted for the right to search through the items, Dyakida's hands and soul tired. She was ready to give up on finding her tools.
