Riolu/Lucario Diet

Intro: I know that the dietary food systems of the different pokemon species is not taken much into thought. Pokemon are more as perceived as works of fiction. Although who’s to say that we cannot dive into theory as to what the dietary aspects pokemon have?
I will be diving into the Riolu and Lucario species.

Species info: The entire species of lucario is lined in mystery. It is not normally found in the wild and only seems to appear with humans present. Riolu is the puppy form of a lucario. Riolu are small, bipedal blue furred canines. They are often very cute in appearance. The adult or teen version of the species is a lucario. Their color scheme is mainly blue and black, the only exception being the yellow to tan chest fur. We often reference these two to that of the Egyptian god Anubis, and we are right. These two creatures are based off of Anubis. Although we are here to learn about their diets and not the origins.

Many assume that a lucario is a carnivorous omnivore. This is mainly due to their long canine teeth which extend on both jaws to an almost vampire level. I will state now that just like humans, they are omnivores. Although do not mistake their diet for that of a human, that is actually a very bad mistake. The species itself has its own special diet

Berries: First off I would like to point out berries. Although you may ask, “why?” Most assume that those canine teeth are mean for sinking into meat. I will say now that those teeth are mainly used for self-defense and another purpose. Their other purpose is actually for berries. Berries are by far one of the most common foods found in the pokemon world. They literally grow everywhere. So why would a lucario have the need for such an adaption? I can answer that very simply by telling you where the species is more likely to live. It is known that the species likes to inhabit that of mountainous regions. Depending on location, life can be very populous or very miniscule. You see the lucario race actually is on the move constantly. In order to feed themselves most times, they have to rely on the little plant life they see. So once again berries are in the picture and not just regular berries but mainly those that grow on vines. The best example of a vine growing berry is that of a cherri berry. The berry is known to be spicy but is packed full of nutrients. They absorb the minerals that surround it and provide many nutrients that a lucario needs.

Berries are a fundamental aspect of a lucario’s diet not just as a go to food. Previously stated they hold tons of nutrients. You see the lucario species is that of one that has a very high need for minerals. They are classified as a steel type and for very good reason, they have metal bones. A riolu only gains the steel typing when becoming a lucario for not just random reasons. While a riolu is living in these mountainous areas, it needs high amounts of metal in its diet. Normally in humans, metals are only a temporary benefactor (except iron) that is later removed from the body. Although to a riolu, it is a very key part to its health. In fact, berries may be the possible key to why it’s fur is blue, but we will get to that later. This constant need for metals is the reason why riolu and lucario mostly live in mountainous areas. Usually mountains are formed when two earth plates collide and push the ground up. This exposes tons of minerals ready for the new plant life to absorb. These berries suck up the minerals and metals for their growth and in term a riolu or lucario eats them for their benefit. We all know that berries grow all times of the year in this world, so they are never out of season. This is why berries are a main part of their diet.

Meat and Bones: Yeah go ahead and make all of those dog jokes you want, but this is actually true. Meat is by far one of the less consumed foods of the lucario species. The main species of lucario though that eat meat is that of lucario living near the sea. Meat is usually either a once a day or once 2-3 days as a delicacy for the species. Oddly enough, the species uses meat as a way to get something more valuable to what they need, calcium. You may say that the species needs protein, especially for muscle building but you are wrong. The lucario species has an intelligence to that of right under a human to being higher than a human. The species is constantly on nerve as they live in very hostile areas. They learn from riolu how to fight, and then how to harness their strength. If anything, a lucario only wants to eat meat when needed because meat causes them to develop scents that predators or hostile pokemon could pick up. Bones however are more necessary for their bodies. Even though the species is using metal in their bone growth, they still need calcium in the process of making their bones grow and combine with these metals. Most times a lucario can gnaw on a bone for hours trying to get this calcium, or use nearby stones to crush it into a powder. They can use collected berries to flavor this powder if needed. This is why bone shaped weaponry is highly used with the species. They see the bone bot just as a good source of vitamins but also as a tool. If they do not get the proper calcium in the diet, then they are at risk of being mortally injured from bone deformations or weakness. Without the calcium, all of that digested metal will not combine with the bone and will also make the lucario very sick since the body holds onto it. So in terms bone is actually more important to a lucario diet than meat.

Vegetation: You may try to mark berries off as a vegetable, but those more of follow the fruit class. Vegetation is another necessity to the race, up there with berries. Vegetation is needed for a few things within the diet. For example, a lucario needs its daily dose of carbon. You may ask why but just like almost all living creatures, it too is made of carbon. Just a little theorizing but a lucario might also use carbon as a way to strengthen its bones even more, ever heard of graphine? Also if berries fail to give the proper minerals, you can bet that plants will have what they need. As well as with minerals, plants also hold many of the common vitamins needed for immune support and heathy skin, fur, eyes, teeth, etc. The lucario species are instinctively health nuts, they judge their food before even eating and usually take preparations to prevent any illness from contaminated food. Vegetables keep their body and senses in key and thus are a sought out part of their diet. A lucario always wants to keep its body in its best condition and only waver this in extreme mental training. Also vegetation, said earlier, helps keep their fur healthy. This helps keep the fur from being easily tangled or snagged. As for separate needs for the need of health, it allows them to regulate their digestion as well. The plants can either slow down or increase digestion based upon the plant.

Human implemented: Yeah I said earlier that lucario are mainly found in presence of humans because of their rarity in wild. Although the introduction of humans into a lucario’s life can change the effects of the diet. I will say this now, never give them “pokemon food” or any other artificially mass produced food. The lucario will most likely deny it or turn its muzzle away from it. Although with human introduction brings upon something that a lucario will raid your refrigerator for, milk. As said earlier about lucario intelligence they can feel sorrow for having to eat another deceased pokemon, even if it was prey for their species. Although thanks to milk being present, a lucario will never have to worry again. The only issues with human contact and their diet is a few things. Most likely the food the trainer will provide will not have the same high nutrient count as what is in nature since the levels of metal and minerals in their diet can be threatening to a human. Most humans will try to offer most of their food as meat and the lucario would most likely decline the trainer if it already met its requirements for that over a bowl of berries. Once again, a lucario only eats meat when needed. The only time human interaction causes a lucario to ingest more meat is if it is being actively trained. If the trainer is that of an EV trainer, most likely it will consume mass amounts but in end be left feeling sick. A lucario’s body is not suited for mass amounts of fat and oils. It is highly encouraged to replace meats with grains or breads when necessary. A lucario burns through grains and breads very easily and such does not build much fat. Their bodies remain mostly lean. Female lucario do have a bit of a slower burn rate of grains but only for the build of of fat in certain areas (chest and hips) for opposite gender reasons. Sweets on the other hand are by far both the best and worst thing possible for a lucario. A lucario cannot break down the pure sugar used in sweets as easily and can be the cause of fattening of a lucario. The species tends to go after sweets as a means of alternate way of obtaining calcium and as a pleasurable treat. In almost all cases, a lucario will abuse the consumption of sweets instead of its usual diet. Chocolate by far is the worst offender of this due to its catnip like nature to a lucario. It does not have a drugging effect but is highly addictive and can cause forms of affection.

(Don't overdose me on chocolate)

Now before I go into judging a lucario’s health I first must tell you what a diet can do to a lucario.

Believe it or not, blue is not a natural hair color. If you really want to think into it, a “shiny” lucario is actually the natural form of a lucario who’s diet did not influence its appearance. The blue that we normally see is actually thanks to the diet a lucario eats consisting of tons of iron. It seems a lucario has a heavily metal based influence to its looks. Its fur is actually almost crystal like in structure due to the mass amount of minerals. If you ever study anything about sapphires, you would learn that iron and titanium is what makes sapphires blue. If a lucario is actually fed a high concentration of aluminum as a riolu, it’s fur will actually turn green. If it’s diet consists of a high amount of aluminum and chromium, it’s fur will turn red. It seems pigments do not decide the fur color but minerals do. This is why the shiny form is believed to be the actual true color of a lucario, because it’s genetics have caused it not to allow minerals to affect its coloration.

So how do you tell if a lucario is healthy?

For one, the lucario would be constantly training in one form or another, unless humans broke the will of that training proving no need to. The lucario would have an almost reflective look to its coat of fur. The metal spikes exposing from its paws and chest should be a white color due to the calcium intake. There should be little smell coming from the lucario. The skin should not be dis-colored in any way, otherwise it is either sick or there is too much of a mineral. The skin should remain a black. The pads on its lower legs should remain plump and of pinkish color. It’s bone structure shouldn’t be deformed in any way. If you are a trainer with one and it trusts you, it should try to communicate to you using verbal or nonverbal means. It has emotions just like a human and if is acting differently, a talk is needed. The lucario should be actively staying at your side (even if it seems clingy). Its body should be lean and mostly skinny, it’s muscles are very compact so it is hard to tell is it is losing exercise or not. If the lucario is consuming meat at a high rate, you may be training it too hard.

Well thank you for reading this, I hope you know something new about the species. I know I was enlightened while researching this. Just remember, the lucario species’ diet is mostly plant and fruit based. They need a ton of minerals to remain healthy. Sometimes human food isn’t the best for them.

Oh to answer the previous question as to why they have those long canine teeth? The answer is very simple. The berries in the pokemon world have tons of self-defense features to prevent their consumption. They use their metal teeth to pierce into some of the most difficult berries. Just imagine a lucario biting into a tamato berry, then pulling its fangs out covered in red spicy berry juice and then go on a rampage for water next time.

You've just got to face it, there is no pokemon out there like Lucario and Riolu. Even their diet and attitude is adorable. I miss Riley the Aura Guardian, I have got to day he was one of my favourite Pokemon Characters. My first anime crush too heart It's hard to believe though, that so many of the people who have helped to create the different generations of pokemon, the ones that we love, back in the day when pokemon was more than just IV breeding and shiny pokemon, have passed away.

I remember when getting a shiny pokemon was fun, just because it was a different colour. Though I'm only fifteen, but back when I got my first pokemon game, pokemon SoulSilver, I can remember watching the credits roll onto the screen. It makes me feel sad to look at what is happening to pokemon nowadays.

Once a strong fandom, its weakening. Lucario- however, is a pokemon which reappears in games everywhere. I think that the reason I joined the guild in the firstplace was because of how much of a lovable pokemon it was, and how that pokemon stood out for me out from all the others. and how it inspired me to create my character and the whole series of Aura Alruna... all those characters from the small but lovable pokemon Lucario.

It's really weird now that I'm looking at it... sweatdrop heart Lucario sort of was always there for me, in the anime, in the manga, in the games, and even here on gaia.

When I got the Alpha sapphire and recieved the Lucario, I called him Lucky heart
