Half a block from the house, Sid already felt chilled through. Two and her teeth were chattering as she wrapped bare arms around what amounted to two scraps of cloth and a bunch of string for a top. Her stockings did nothing to keep her legs warm under her ridiculously short skirt, but that had been entirely the point when she'd dressed like this. It got hot in the club when people started jumping around and the stage lights made it worse. Club wear, though, was not at all suitable for schlepping around D.C. at four in the morning in early December. Especially when the body under them had no insulation either. Sid's hands were shaking as she dug her phone out of her back, making a right at the corner to head for the lights of downtown. The coffee shop wouldn't be open this early, but maybe she could find something with twenty hours like a Perkins to camp out in. Her car, sadly, was still at the club... despite her quick return to sobriety, she had been way too smashed to drive home tonight. Home. God damn Rob.She still didn't even know what he was so ******** upset about. Its not like her coming in late was news. And okay, maybe she'd been a little loud, but what did he want from her? She'd apologized, what else was she supposed to do? She didn't have a time machine to go back and stop herself. Did he expect her to get down on her knees and sweetly open her mouth for him? Because to avoid a fight, she probably would have. It was too ******** early and too ******** cold for this bullshit, and with the roil of emotions she was right now, there was a good chunk of her contact list she didn't feel much up for calling to drag her butt out of the gutter. Her thumb swiped and the names rolled by, each read and discarded until one stopped her. Hunched over, arm around her middle, she contemplated it for a hot second before she shook herself and hit the call ******** it. She needed someone right now, and with Rob out of the picture, there was only one person in the whole entire world that she wanted... even if she'd given up the right to want him half a year ago. The phone began to ring as she held it to her ear and Sid jiggled in place as she prayed to the god she didn't believe in that he was home, that he'd answer the phone and that Ice had enough left of whatever had been between them to take pity on his ex and let her crash on his couch. You always made me feel safe... I need that right now.

Normally, 4AM found Isaiah Zähne fast asleep to some capacity. The location varied - sometimes he made it to the bed, other times he found the couch, and his especially drunken times entailed never leaving the chair. The end result invariably ended in the man falling asleep by the time that twilight seeped across the sky, or in the case of dead winter, darkness still reigned.
This night found Isaiah in a significantly compromising position - one he did not regret in the slightest, but one that required him to rely on another to answer the continually vibrating phone left in his discarded pants.
"Hurry up!" Isaiah hissed, his face half-buried in the bed. "I can't miss a business call!"
"I told you, I don't know where it is!" Isaiah could hear the girl's frantic scrambling as she searched cast-off articles.
Somewhere near her, Tastykake meowed. Hastily the feline bunted against the girl's leg, to which she reacted aversely, and even cursed at the cat for having disturbed her. Tastykake appeared unaffected; she continued in her impromptu affectionate displays whether Isaiah's companion enjoyed it or not. Naturally, Tasty's antics added to the time taken to find the phone, and left the girl altogether frustrated.
"Left pants pocket. You can just slide the bar to answer it."Inwardly he fought the urge to ask her if she had ears.
But his companion for the night found the phone with relative ease, pulled it from the pocket, and raced toward him in stiletto heels that clop clop clopped across the wood floor. "Okay, I found it! I don't have my glasses on so I can't tell you who it is. I'll just answer it anyway." Without waiting for Isaiah's response, the girl placed the cell phone to Isaiah's ear.
Whetting his lips, Isaiah spoke into the mouthpiece. "Hello?" He hoped the person on the other line hadn't dropped the call from extensive waiting.

The phone rang over and over again, each minute she waited feeling like hours as she trudged down the sidewalk. C'mon Ice, be home... Sid had no idea what she was going to do if for some reason he wasn't. Find someone else in her address book maybe? Except she didn't want anyone else. Anxiety thickened her throat and the young woman hugged her ribs tighter, wishing suddenly for a smoke. She'd have to stop moving to light up though, and the elusive dream of warmth was more appealing than getting high. At least for now. Please, Ice...Suddenly, the line clicked open in her ear and a sleepy voice answered. She heard some shuffling in the background, but mostly, it was a familiar voice. Sid felt a strange rush of warmth and suddenly her eyes prickled, her vision going wavey. She had to clear her throat before she was able to speak, swallowing past the sudden lump that formed. "Hey, Ice... I'm really sorry to wake you up so early." She started off. God, this was so awkward, but she was just... so done with everything tonight. I need you. "I know this is a pain in the a** to ask, but... C-can I crash on your couch tonight? I don't have anywhere else to go." Her voice broke and she took a moment to draw a deep breath, ducking her head as the tears threatened to spill over. "R-Rob and I had a fight. I left my car at the club and the cab took all the money I had with me. I'm really sorry, I just... I didn't know what else to do. Please, Ice?" Please don't say No.

Initially Isaiah considered telling her that he'd been awake, that he was actually quite busy right now with a guest so if she could kindly be quick about her affairs, he could answer them happily and resume his nightly activities. The tone of her voice, however, lent him pause to the curt brush-off; she did not sound like the Sid he knew asking after favors to further her own self-destruction. And as she progressed with her question, Isaiah realized that she only asked after basic human needs. Not money, not a pawn situation, not to drive her to the nearest bar.
"The key's right there," Isaiah tried to whisper as best he could, but the speaker was held quite near his mouth.
"Yes, you can stay, Sid. I wouldn't turn you down for that." She sounded a very honest type of pathetic, which was rare for her - Isaiah was used to playing along with the dishonest type that she adopted quite often. It was one of her hallmarks that rendered her particularly adept at nosing out the next high life. "Where are you? I'll come get you. If you're dressed like you did when you went clubbing, then you're going to go hypothermic before you make it a block away. And try to keep shivering while you wait. It keeps your body temperature up." It felt paltry to provide it in the moment, but that constituted Isaiah's best advice in her position.
But Sid faced more dangers than simple hypothermia. Youma lurked the bowels of Destiny City at these hours, as did Negaverse agents looking for sport or energy or dominion over others. White Moon senshi were no better. And none of the prior precluded the appearance of gangs, rapists, or muggers - all endemic to city life.
"Hurry up," he hissed to the girl, who finally found the key.
"I can't if I'm holding the phone! Here, I'll put it next to your face. You can lay on it, or whatever." While flustered, she was good-natured about it; the girl laid the phone on the bed quite near his face while she started on unclasping the restraints.

Sid caught the whisper, but dismissed it, more interested in his answer to her plea. "God, Ice, you are a life saver." She burst out as she pressed the heel of her hand to her forehead, struggling to keep the tears out of her voice even as a couple leaked out of the corners of her eyes. It smeared her heavy make up when she scrubbed her cheeks, but she hardly cared right then. Ice hadn't turned her away... she could still count on him, when she really needed him. The feeling made her chest tightened and a lump rise in her throat. "I'm a f-few blocks from the house. Heading downtown. Can't miss me." Sid recited, relief bringing laughter to her tears. It really was kind of ridiculous, being out in this outfit at this time of night at this time of year. She really had been out of it when she'd left the house. "Yeah, I'm wearing what I always wear... I was so flustered I didn't even think to grab a coat before I left, or anything but my purse for that matter. Never was good at thinking ahead." She chuckled, forcing her boots to keep their pace down the cold and empty sidewalk. It was clear, at least, so no chance she'd fall in her chunky heels. The orange light from a lamp caught in her hair, washing her out to monotone as she passed under it before stepping into the next stretch of darkness. "If you're b-busy, you can call me back later." Sid offered with a grin as she heard him hissing something at someone in the room with him, shivering thickly in the chill night air. No doubt, she'd interrupted something. It made her feel a little bad, but only a little and not for long. Slowly freezing made it sort of hard to be sympathetic. "Tell whomever it is I'll m-make it up to them. Cross my heart."

With the debacle sorted between Isaiah and his overnight guest, he eventually dressed and started his car from its parking spot in the underground parking garage. The guest in question elected to stay behind for the trip, having been at once intrigued by Isaiah's deliberately ambiguous remarks about a good time, and annoyed enough at this sudden intruder that leaving the warmth of Isaiah's home to meet this stranger left the girl nonplussed. Isaiah did not fault her for her decision, and found it rather relieving for the tension a third presence may cause for them in the car.
Once the engine roared up from the battery's reluctant spark, Isaiah synced his phone through bluetooth. After searching her name in the contacts, Isaiah set the phone to call through the cluster of stupidly convenient buttons on his steering wheel. Pulling out was a matter of navigating the garage and inputting his permit, then he was free to patrol the streets for signs of a one-woman rave party on the fast road to freezing to death. For this, he prepped the car by cranking his defrost to max (with the floor heating option, of course) and gunned the engine whenever possible to heat it faster.
As he waited for her to pick up, Isaiah drove through the eerily derelict streets of Destiny City with Sid's unmistakeable visage in mind. Scarcely did he ever see anyone walking along sidewalks, and more than once had he caught sight of a shifting shadow in his periphery. Some, he found, even flitted above him, as if one of their night warriors leapt from one roof to the next. It left him wondering exactly how often drivers found themselves bothered by the sleeper war, and if ever they found themselves threatened by youma. Worrying about it was less of a concern for him than for Sid, however, as a lone pedestrian encountered an enormous risk for draining, starseeding, or youma attacks.
Unless, of course, Sidney James joined the Negaverse (which, somehow, he doubted immensely).
The thought almost left him laughing while he waited for Sid to answer. Almost. Instead he kept his focus to scanning the streets between glaring casts of green, red, yellow lights while he perused gridded streets. Come on, Sid. I know you're cold, but pick up the phone so I can get some cross streets out of you.
Unless that's her right there.
Isaiah pulled toward the curb where he caught sight of a shadow dipping into darkness, and slowed while he considered calling out. He hoped it was her.

After hanging up with Ice, Sid had tucked her hands into her arm pits, ducked her head, and tried to block out how cold she was as she slogged onwards, heading for downtown. She lost track of how long she walked for... her steps were a steady rhythm to the music in her head, her world closing down around her. It was the hairs on the back of her neck starting to stand up that pulled her from her day dreaming. A glance around revealed an empty street lined with dark houses. Nothing moved that she could see, but the feeling persisted. Hunching boney shoulders, Sid's pace quickened and her strides lengthened, carrying her across the dirty sidewalk in a nervous shuffle. It didn't help that she was shivering at regular intervals, skin aching with the cold. Damn it, where is Ice?It must have taken him a while to finish up whatever it was he'd been doing... or who. Add on time to drive over, and if he hadn't come down the street she'd taken... God, she hoped he hurried. She would have given anything for the warmth and safety of his passenger seat at this point. A scuffle, behind her and to the side, sent Sid's heart up into her throat to beat there in growing panic. s**t...The short woman spun and sidled out of the bright spotlight the street light had become and her eyes darted into the shadows about her. There was no movement she could see, but that did little to calm her nerves... especially when her phone suddenly went off in her hand, making her jump and fumble it. It slipped completely out of her grip and fell with a clatter and she followed it down, scrambling to grab the annoying little device that was her life line. It took a moment to get it and another to manage to get her fingers working enough to slide the screen open, jerking it up to her ear. "Yo! Hey! Ice?" Sid burst out, relief making her voice sharp. "Where the ******** are you? Oh..." There was a car pulling up to the curb down the way, completely unnoticed in her haste. The DJ burst out of the shadows in a flurry and rushed to the passenger door, praying this was the right car and she wasn't about to burst in on some stranger. Even if it was, she was tempted to try and beg a ride from them. Anything to get off the street. "Ice?" She said as she bent down to peer into the window, her phone pressed to her ear.

Sid picked up as he pulled to the curb, and Ice would have responded if someone hadn't started attempting to open his car door. A press of a button rolled the passenger window down, and Isaiah confirmed that Sid was on the other side. Another button, and the doors unlatched. "Get in before you freeze to death," he urged as he hung up the phone.
"I was surprised I could find you. Destiny City turns into some kind of maze at night. I was worried I'd passed you back there somewhere, or something worse had happened." Youma still lurked, gathered, and preyed at this time of night - especially without knights or senshi to attract their attention. He doubted Sid chose either path, so her continued wandering out in the cold was both asinine and dangerous. Would it have been worth it to run from Rob if you wound up dead? The question remained unasked; there was no point in soliciting its answer now, or during her stay. It wasn't his right to ask, and it wasn't his answer to receive.
Before he pulled away, Isaiah pressed the button for the passenger-side heated seat it glowed to life in cold white while he tried to adjust the vents to point in her direction. Goosebumps looked obvious on her skin, even in the dim, peering light of street lamps. He did not hesitate further in peeling from the curb.
"If you want to tell me about it, we've got a few minutes before my apartment. Otherwise, my iPod's plugged and and I'm pretty certain you know every song on there." Years of cohabitation taught him not to push - to offer other, less stressful options to prevent confrontation before she was ready. They had little time to address it, regardless; once they reached his condo, his current guest wouldn't be interested in hearing such events. She may have already left, though he warned her against leaving his place unlocked. However, people grew entitled when they encountered enough generosity.
The shadows stretched long and steely dark from his headlights. They never fully chased away, even in halogen lamps. Youma might've stirred, but they cruised at a speed that left such creatures wanting for an easier target.

Relief was sweet and piercing as the rolled down window revealed a familiar face. "Thank ******** God..." Sid gasped out as she fumbled for the door handle, get it open after a couple tries with fingertips she almost couldn't feel any more. The small body flopped down into the leather gratefully and she tugged the door shut behind her with firm finality. Whatever had or hadn't been out there in the dark was not going to reach her inside this car, much like pulling a blanket over your head to fend off monsters in your bedroom. Blessed safety, and she almost could have cried at how welcome it was. Ice cranked the heat in the vents and in the seat under her butt, enveloping Sid and her ridiculous club outfit in an pocket of warmth. She groaned happily as she reached to take over directing the vents from him, and then settled back, pulling her knees up to brace them against the dash and squirm down deeper into the seat. "At worst, I'd have frozen to death." She replied, brushing off his concerns for anything more. "I've navigated New York and Chicago at 2 A.M., you know I can handle anything people throw at me. But... thanks. For getting here so quick. I appreciate it, for more than just the warm car." Immediately, Sid's slender fingers were reaching for Ice's iPod, thumbing through his library for something to fit her mood. She wanted something bright and fast paced... something that would distract her from the s**t fest tonight had become. "Its not really anything." She said as she scrolled, her eyes on the glow of the screen. Despite how off handed and nonchalant she seemed, there was a tightness around her mouth to match the brightness in her eyes. "He got mad about me coming in so late and being drunk, that's all. I mean, its not like I didn't make it clear I worked nights at a club when I moved in, but I guess he just got something up his a** tonight and decided to take it out on me." Her thin shoulders lifted and fell as she found the song she wanted and the music began to beat out of the speakers at Ice's usual decibel level. Sid didn't mind... After all this time, not being able to feel it vibrate in her chest seemed like a waste. Cocooned in warmth and driving bass, some of the hurt began to leech out, relaxing her muscles and soothing her heart.

"I know you can handle anything people throw at you, but there's a few not-people roaming the streets here. You can't sweet talk your way away from them, trust me." Isaiah navigated the corners, and Sid navigated the playlist. They needn't look at each other to recognize an old synergy that never fully degraded. Isaiah chose to concentrate more on the potential for youma than on thoughts of his ex. It broadened the night, but lessened its shadow.
Isaiah offered very little facial reaction to her story, however. His leg pained him, but he continued to shift. "Oh, so he's just mad at you for being you." I doubt coming home drunk in the middle of the night was just it. Something else is going on between you for him to kick you out just for that - or for you to kick yourself out. Or is that the story you always stick to? When you left me, did you tell your first stop on your journey out that 'it's not really anything'? No wonder you need the heaters on. "That puts an exciting twist on the evening then, doesn't it? There might be one more surprise in it yet - you already picked up that I have a house guest tonight, and though she doesn't know you, she might stick around if she's feeling adventurous. You're welcome to join if that's the case.
"Otherwise you can get more drunk at my place." The streets stretched further. The piercing gaze of a red light bearing down on them thwarted his night vision. When it blinked to green, there lingered a spot in his vision that refused to fade. The condo was now half a minute away.
"It's a step up from what we had in New York." Into the parking lot he pulled, found his numbered space, and stopped the car. He was out seconds later, already starting toward the building. Sidney looked like she would freeze before she reached the lobby if they didn't walk briskly.
The sidewalk to the large, glass-fronted building featured a series of yard lights paralleling the sidewalk. These were staked into lush green grass, near the occasional placed boulder. A cluster of small trees and shrubs gathered near the building itself as landscaping. Red mulch was recently spread, and while the night stole its color, the aroma of the bark flecks sweetened the air. When Isaiah reached the double glass doors, he keyed them open to let Sidney inside. "Hold an elevator for us, will you? We need the fifteenth floor." And walking hurt terribly without assistance. The limp accrued and threatened to reach exaggerated proportions.Whimsical Blue thank you for being so patient!

Sid hunched down into her seat as she set his ipod down. It was comfortable here, like old times almost. She might have enjoyed it more, had it been under different circumstances, but she would take what she could get. His comment about not-people made her wrinkle her nose, but she chose not to comment on it. She knew pretty well what was out there, but Ice didn't need to know about her forays out in sailor suit. He probably wouldn't even take it seriously and laugh at the thought of Sid, of all people, running around playing super hero. Not that she took it all that seriously, but still. Having your Ex laugh at you over the stupid s**t in your life was not something she was interested in tonight. "Yeah, same old s**t..." Sid grumbled at his reaction to her explanation. Yep, another person who couldn't handle who Sid was, big ******** surprise. Not like it hadn't happened her entire ******** life... just one after another, and always after she started trusting them and maybe thinking they might actually accept her. She was starting to think it was never going to happen and she should be keeping things friendly, rather than letting someone get in close. Friends seemed to work okay... anything more than that was doomed to failure. He went on about the house guest he had and Sid figured it was going to end up being a case of 'if you want the couch you're going to have to put up with listening to us in the bedroom', but Ice surprised her. She blinked as she lifted her head, her eyebrows rising on her forehead. Join them? Now there was an interesting idea... Sid studied Ice's profile as he drove, the lights through the window lighting up the high points of his face and outlining the edge. "You know I can never say no to a good time." She said, her thoughts flipping over from apathetic and sad into interested and intrigued. Quite the way to shake off the bad vibes of a fight... fall into bed with your Ex and his partner for the night. It was pleasing and kind of exciting, to think he might have warmed up to her enough at long last to ease up some of the strict no-touch policy he'd been operating under since she'd moved to D.C. and run into him. "Lets hope she's up for a little three way play." "Anything is a step up from our place in New York." She chuckled as she settled back into her seat again, the hard edge of the dash pressing into her knees. Their apartment had been matchbox sized and run down, they hadn't had the money for anything better, but to Sid it had been heaven. Their own personal paradise... because it had been theirs. Because Ice had been there. This building was nice though, the one Ice stopped his car in front of. Living clean seemed to have given him a bit of a step up in life. Lucky him... Sid left the warmth of the car with reluctance and trotted to the door, eager to be inside out of the cold. She'd had more than enough of it for one night, and what was inside was far more enticing to think about. Ice opened the door and she slipped in after him, starting out at a quick pace before she realized he wasn't keeping up with her. Stopping partway, Sid turned back to frown at the taller man, only then noticing the way he limped. Ice had always had the longer stride... to fall behind Sid with her short legs, he had to have been in a lot of pain. And watching him limp along? It gave her a stab of something she hadn't felt in a long time. "What happened?" She asked as she paced back to him. She said it with genuine concern as she slipped herself under his arm, remembering all the times in the past she'd done the same thing. Her's landed comfortably at his waistline and she wrapped it firmly around his narrow hips, giving him something to lean on as he had so many times before. The elevator could wait as they made their slow way towards it, Sid's steps adjusted to fall into rhythm with his.

The arm about his waist was welcome, and while Sid looked the frail part, he knew she had enough hidden strength that he could lean on her without worry. Her assistance rendered the trek significantly easier. "I got attacked by someone," he admitted slowly. "One of the terrorists. Some man with a scythe." The walkway was navigated carefully, and the warm breath of indoor heating greeted them when they passed into the building. "I don't know why he did it and I never found out what he wanted - or why he suddenly left. Maybe someone, or something, scared him off. I can't say. But now... I have this wonderful limp to live with. It hasn't killed my charm, though, if the girl upstairs is any indication."
The entryway hosted a rounded desk in its center, upon which sat several computers. A secretary and security officer sat side by side, with the secretary greeting him with a wave. On either side of the desk stood long glass walls that featured intricate frosted designs, spidering out to form an artistic rendering of the city. Arched openings allowed one to pace further into a grand lobby area, that featured plentiful seating and simple recreations for the apartment building's denizens. Isaiah did not venture down this path, however, and instead immediately turned to his right. There, the hallway ended with a set of elevators on either side and a great painting hung above a potted plant. He chose the nearest open elevator for entry. Pressing the proper key, he leaned against the provided railing while gravity pressed on their shoulders.
"I think you'll like it. The apartment, I mean. It's a lot more spacious than our postage stamp, or even the apartment I kept in Chicago. It's a lot less run down, too. You remember how the ceiling was peeling down in our old place and we used to say that our upstairs neighbor's bathtub was gonna break through and kill us both? There's not even a single chip of plaster on the ground in this one. And you wouldn't believe how cheap it was." Or maybe you would, if you're more acquainted with all the terrible s**t that goes down here.
The ride was long, with plentiful floors to pass. Isaiah remained silent for most of it, especially when other denizens joined them on the elevator. Most didn't recognize Isaiah or Sid and simply exchanged their pleasantries before leaving. Others entered and passed without a single acknowledgement toward the other two. Finally the doors opened to an identical hallway to the many they witnessed before, and Isaiah stepped off slowly. "This is it," he prompted.
"Now it doesn't have a hot tub filled with champagne or anything like that, but it does have a nice couch and chairs that you could use. Or you could just share the bed, I don't have much preference there. Oh, the bed's in this interesting loft setup where it's got these frosted glass panels that prevent anyone below from creeping on you. You'd like it - plenty of room to tease there." The talking helped distract him from the pain of walking to the apartment. It detracted from the monotony of passing door after door after door on his way to the proper number. And once he found it, he pulled his keys from pocket and rattled the knob until the door opened to the both of them.
The space was large, with high ceilings suggesting a would-be second story to the place. Its vastness spread outward, too, with only bookcases standing in as makeshift walls to designate different rooms. His pen collection and diploma sat on the display shelves to the left, with a smattering of photos of Isaiah and friends. A few photos of he and Sid still remained. Stairs were barely visible between bookshelves, and remarkable for their suspended metal composition and glass framing. They led upward to the recognizable bedroom space, with the iconic frosted glass panels that Isaiah spoke of earlier. Hazy movement was visible through their guarded surfaces.
"That you, Babe?" A woman's voice called from the upper floor.

The entrance was very nice and said was quiet as they made their way up in the elevator. She was content just keeping her arm around Ice's waist along the way and think about how far apart they'd gotten since New York. Much as she sometimes forgot, this Ice was not the same one she'd fallen in love with. It was hard not to think he wasn't in there somewhere, but his life had progressed where hers hadn't. She was the same, but now she felt a need to catch up to him before he left her behind entirely. Down the hall to the correct door and Sid was left to silently and internally gape at how large and well done the apartment was. Event Rob's house wasn't this nice, though that was probably mostly to do with it being a work in progress. What would it be like to live here with Ice? Would it be less intimate with so much space? Or more comfortable? How did the sun look streaming through those giant windows? The view was likely gorgeous from so high up. A call from the half second story pulled magenta eyes upwards and Sid played with the hem of Ice's shirt, worming her fingers between fabric till she found skin. "Ready to introduce me to your friend?" She purred.

"It depends," he called back to the upstairs. "Are you naked?"
"Yes," she returned, somewhat affronted.
"That includes the sheets."
A short silence followed, where rustling was heard. "Yes."
"Good, I'll be right up." Afterward, he half turned to Sid, whom he threw an arm around easily. "She's a bit of a grump, but I think it's all for show. If you can get past it, she's down for basically anything. You just have to weather the sighs and the complaints first. But after a while, she starts to get into things, and quits complaining. A solid eight out of ten." He offered her a gentle shake of the shoulders.
"Afterward, we'll get you situated. As you can see, there's a couch downstairs if you prefer it, and the bed upstairs. There's liquor in the kitchen, and sometimes there's food in there too. Tastykake is around here somewhere but she shouldn't bother you too much. The last time she uh, interrupted me, she got a little scandalized. Now I think she's a little reticent toward strangers.
