Winter was brutal but it also had the season of warm drinks and people taking the most pity on stray animals. The "I'm cold and shivering" act wasn't so much an act anymore, but playing it up even harder to violent shaking never hurt. It also helped that bouncing between senshi homes, he managed to get back his clean, white coat, which made it easier to get what he wanted as no one liked matted, dirty cats. (He had been diagnosed by many passer idea back in the day as having mange, rabies, or just something awful.)
Standing outside a hipster bookstore, he slipped inside and started to wander the ailses.
"Hey Cotton!" Called one of the baristas, smiling over the counter at him, to which he purred at his given name and rubbed against the wall before wandering about.
"You look better. Man, he looked like he was rotting last year." She called to Fred, the owner who let him into the bookstore in cold days.
Arthur moved over to a table occupied by one person and jumped up into a chair and sat before looking over at them before cleaning his paw.
"Tell us if Cotton bugs you. We can move him." Called Suzy, the barista.

On a rare day off, Fiona had opted to take a day to herself which had led her to a popular bookstore that doubled as a coffeeshop. It was relaxing, being surrounded by the smell of books and coffee beans, and it hadn't taken her long to find a book worth purchasing and to order a coffee before settling down at a table and starting to read.
She'd gotten a few chapters in to the fantasy themed best seller that'd caught her eye when someone, or rather, some cat, decided to make her table their table. Frowning, she peered at the white feline from over the top of her book before glancing towards the barista and offering them a thin smile.
"No, it's fine. He's no bother." And he wasn't, until she took a second look at him and she spotted that tell-tale star that adorned the features of guardian cats. "Though," she mumbled softly, more to herself and the cat than anyone else, "I'm willing to bet your name isn't Cotton."
She sighed, stuck her receipt in the book as a bookmark and set it down. "Should I get you some milk or something?"

Arthur smiled best a cat could when she directly spoke to him, and meowed before winking. Glancing at the baristas who were entirely too distracted with their phones and the espresso machine, he jumped onto the table and walked across over her book and right into her lap.
"It's Arthur." He whispered as he made himself VERY comfortable.

Fiona hadn't expected the cat to decide that her lap was apparently his chair but he was soft, relatively fluffy and, well, Fiona liked cats so she didn't complain or attempt to move him. Instead she slipped her bookmark between the pages of her book and set it down on the table before petting Arthur between the ears.
She scratched at that sweet spot she knew most cats liked, humming slightly before she offered her own name. "Fiona," she said, glancing around to make sure no one was eavesdropping or paying too much attention to them.
"Is the bookstore your home or do you just sorta - " she waved her free hand around in a "y'know" gesture. "Wander?"

He purred, enjoying the well placed scratching and petting.
"Not my home. I go to places that will let me stay. It's good to have safe havens in a city. Places to stay dry. Places to eat. Places for something like this." He said as e smiled up as her.
"Do you wander or just read books just here? What are you reading?"

Overall, Fiona liked cats but had never considered owning one before. Probably because she used to share her flat with Peter and he was most certainly not a cat person. And really, she didn't have time to devote to a pet of any kind but -
It wouldn't be a bad idea to offer her home as a place for a guardian cat to crash as needed. It would probably be useful sometimes, to extend her circle of people she knew to one.
"Do you need more places to stay? Because you could probably stay with me sometimes." Though in hindsight, it probably would've been wise to get to know Arthur a little more before that but - he was a cat, what harm could he do?
"I like to have a myriad of place to stop in on. This place is nice because I can get books and coffee. It's a win-win." Definitely her favorite part of the establishment when she found time to stop in. "Oh, just reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Felt appropriate with the movie releasing soon."

"I never got to read much. I usually just read the paper. People gets suspicious of a cat near an open book. I do like the coffee here, and there is a certain smell here that I do enjoy because of them." He turned his body sideways to roll to turn his neck and direct her petting and scratching to under his chin.
"I've never heard of the book or this movie. Then again, I've never been to a movie theater before. I've only ever seen a few on TV."
He stretched a bit as he curled his tail, pleased with both the lap and conversation. Even he got starved for a good chat a lot of the times.
"Are you free tonight?" He asked at the offer for another place.

"It's a popular, cute thing to see on tumblr though." It was a very casual comment but Fiona appeared to understand. "People love pictures of cats, maybe you can run a blog or something. You're supposed to be tech savvy yeah?" She only had limited knowledge about the skills guardian cats seemed to posses.
"We can watch the classic pride and prejudice with Kiera Knightly if you want," she offered, scratching down his back.
"Yeah, come on," she tucked her book into her bag, slung it over her shoulder and scooped him up against her chest. moonkitsune so sorry about the wait, i keep misplacing the link!

"Run a blog? Of just me? Do people like hearing what cats like to say? Or just - pictures of us reading? That seems very nice but - well, I try to take care of my coat but is it really worth seeing? I never really thoughts taking pictures of myself would be something people would want to see." He said, making sure not to dig his claws in when he was scooped up.
Purring in response, he smiled up at her. "That sounds very nice. I'd love to see this Classic Pride and Prejudice." Though Kiera Knightly? She sounded regal and noble to have that as a last name.
"You are certainly nice. I am glad to have met you." He said, keeping his voice down as best he could the public but finding it hard to resist talking to her. He loved meeting new people and this one felt kind. Even the way she held him said she knew how to handle a cat. That said a lot.
Feeling safe in her hands, he went with her to watch this movie and ask more about cat pictures.
