As per usual, when he had his down time from classes, Gaius went about wandering aimlessly along the school grounds. That was, of course, after he'd taken care of his growing herd of familiars, and tended to his hidden garden. With no immediate need to be anywhere, leisurely activities were at his disposal.

Leaving his secret garden, the junior waltzed about the open outdoors, wearing nothing additionally more than a scarf to protect from the chill in the air. It didn't really bother him all that much, admittingly. The two familiars tucked in the pockets in his pant legs were plenty warm and comfy, keeping their heads from peeking out for the time being. Perched on a shoulder was his vespercat, enjoying the ride, while his two skyfish floated alongside him. Truly, he had more than enough company, being the walking zoo that he was.

He walked mainly along the side of the gigantic building that was the academy, taking idle notes of traits the establishment held that Eilwen had told him about. It wasn't something he'd noticed before her pointing them out, making him all the curious to learn about the structure, and the method in which it was built. However his distracted nature kicked in to veer his attention elsewhere: a little garden resting just a few stories below some dorm windows. Stopping by it, the mutant stared, tiny wings twitching gently with interest. The inviting blossoms of morning glories stared back at him. Wow, how lovely... slowly, he knelt down, getting a closer look, which prompted the relaxing vespercat to crack open an eye and see what the big deal was. They seemed in good shape, considering the cold. He had heard that some could withstand the frost, and these seemed to be the only ones he'd come across as of late. A single hand reached down to tenderly brush along some of the vivid petals, admiring them with a softening to his features.

Galan had noticed the small garden below his window many times. The way the light played over the shapes, the shadows in Below both deeper and less defined than he was used to. The almost purple cast to them had his artist's brain rolling to try to take it all in.

This afternoon, he'd decided to actually spend some time in it, do some life studies and practise his shadowing. He fetched his sketchbook and his tin of graphite pencils and tools. He finished his spry trek down the stairwell and emerged into the relative chill. He was intensely happy he'd layered up for his session. Looping his scarf around his jacket collar an extra twist, Galan settled in the grass, unsurprised to find a crisp dew had already gathered.

He flipped open his sketchbook to a fresh page, popped open his tin and cast his glance around the many flora available for a study. The Morning Glories caught his eye with their stark white faces among the green and with a smile he set pencil to paper. He sketched in swift, swooping lines, following the contour of the flowers, smudging in touches of shadow here and there.

Glancing up again for another look at his model, he found a hand touching it. Galan jolted, having been so engrossed in his drawing he hadn't even noticed anyone approaching. He looked up hastily and caught sight of another student, by the looks of things. However, the youth seemed festooned with a number of creatures. If the posture had not been so lackadaisical or the creatures so still, Galan would have thought the boy was being swarmed and might have rushed to help chase them away. As it was, he wasn't sure what to make of this swarm of life in front of him. Perhaps it was simply his imagination and the boy wasn't there it all, the vision populating the garden with more subjects to be drawn.

Just to make sure the visitor was actually there, Galan piped up softly, "Hello?"

It wasn't uncommon of Gaius to get so engrossed and distracted by something that he'd completely shut out everything around him. And this case was no different. Upon his gaze having caught sight of the small garden, he'd tuned all around him out to inspect the quiet beauties. Finger tips showing a great amount of care as they grazed the underbellies of the delicate petals, to peek at the stems that dipped further down into the soil, it was in great delay that he even registered the presence of the other nearby.

When the stranger did speak up, he was slow on the uptake, head turning only after a few moments after the 'hello?' was uttered. For a moment he wondered when the Day dweller had come over, but knowing himself better than that, he simply put on his cool grin in response, "hey there." It was also then that he began to take note of the other elements involved. Spying the notepad in the goblins possession, he made the connection, slowly retracting his hand, "Oh, sorry. Did I mess you up?" he leaned a little to try and get a better look at the parchment that was being etched on, his familiars in turn also turning their own heads to stare at the artist before them.

The cool response did nothing to convince Galan that he was not simply imagining this visitor. In addition, the wafting familiars all peering at him as if connected to their master only added to the ethereal nature of the greeting. Galan couldn't help but have a Dryad fairy tale spring to mind of a child who was whisked away by the Fey from a forest glade. He tried to tell himself it was only because he had read the tale that very morning that he leaped to such conclusions, and yet...

Galan shifted, if only to regain his bearings. His tail hugged the tin of art supplies closer to his side, as if the touch of something tangible could act as anchor against his fancies. "No, not at all. I was just so engrossed in my work that one moment--it seemed--I looked up and was quite alone, and the next you had...appeared." He felt silly saying it, but hoped the other would take from it nothing more than a turn of phrase.

Then quite a different thought struck him. "Is this your garden?" he asked suddenly. With all of this one's animal kin and his loving reverence for the plants, Galan suddenly worried that perhaps he was speaking to this plot's groundskeeper, and that perhaps he was trespassing where he wasn't permitted. He hadn't harmed a single flower, but he felt awfully conspicuous sitting square in the midst of the grass which suddenly seemed far too kempt and tidy to have frequent traffic.

Settling on his heels in his crouched position, arms folded over his knees, his lax grin eased up even more with the relief of not interrupting the artist at work... Or at least being an obstacle to have to draw around, or incorporated into the piece.

Chuckling lightly, his miniature wings gave a faint little twitch in the amusement, a hand rising to apologetically scratch along the side of his head, "I didn't even know anyone else was here, myself. Got too caught up in these little guys, I guess." said raised hand turned to point a thumb back at the garden patch in gesture. Getting distracted was a very bad habit of his... that didn't seem to lessen as he got older.

Finally pushing up, the familiars clinging onto him gripping a little more for security with the elevation, Gaius walked over to stand beside the doodlebug, again attempting to see the picture better, "Nah. I just like plants a lot, so I come visit the little gardens around the grounds." sitting beside the goblin after a spell, the critters in his party all stared curiously at the stranger, the ones in his pockets poking their heads out more for a better look as well. "Looks like you enjoy plants too." he commented with his grin spreading further on his face. It was always a treat to find a fellow flora lover.

There was something about this one that felt familiar. Not so much in bearing or words, but in the way he interacted with the world. He saw, like Galan himself did, what few others took the time to appreciate. And, like Galan, his passion hung about him (quite literally) the way Galan's love of art was constantly smudged into his fingertips or splattered in paint across his floor.

Sensing this understanding (or perhaps wishfully hoping it was there), he relaxed and tilted the book so that the other could get a better look. "Ah, I am a lover of beauty in all its forms. I spend much of my time doing portraits, so I need to work more on my flora and fauna. Hence the studies," he explained blithely.

He quieted somewhat as he observed all manner of creatures poking out of his companion's pockets. "How long have you been rearing these little ones?" he asked. Galan had never been permitted any pets, and truth be told, he felt a little nervous about being responsible for another creature's wellbeing. "Have you named them all?"

The beady eyes of the salamanders watched the goblin with slow blinks from time to time, their adorable frills popping out once they reached the pockets edge. With the better viewing position offered, Gaius took advantage of the opportunity, as did the vespercat on his shoulder, cocking their heads almost in unison for a good look see.

"You're really good." he praised, "Getting all those little details and stuff that most people overlook." it was very evident in the time and care that was put into the sketched work. Though he was curious... Leaning back a little, to eye the stranger, his eyes lidded slightly, "what do you consider to be in the beauty category?" a sort of 'knowing' look was poised on his face now, lax demeanor remaining... but as an inqusitive and observant individual, he took interest in learning about how others assessed what was around them.

With the subtle shift of attention to his critters, Gaius too peeked down at the tiny heads now popped from his pockets confinements. Smirking, he reached down to let a single, uncovered finger give a delicate rub to the top of each smooth amphibians noggin, "have had these two for awhile, now. Since I was a freshling." his finger paused to place on each one respectively, "The striped one is Caroline, and this red one his name is Rose." peering over his shoulder at the feline there, he tilted his head a little to show the creature off a little more, "This guy's pretty new to the group."

"That's very kind of you to say," Galan responded politely, bobbing his head a little. Then this budding zoologist asked a very interesting question.

"In truth, everything has a spark of beauty in it. Whether it's the way the dew collects in those morning glories and how they turn their faces from the sun lest it be taken from them. Or the way a wing folds and a single feather ruffles out of place... Or the way a comforting smell can cut through a gloomy fog and reestablish your sense of self--without you even noticing what's happened." He paused, a little carried away with his passion and stumbling verbally to find his way back to the conversation. He blinked up at the other, leaning over him, head thrown carelessly back, living things moving about his person.

"...Or, the way a person's confidence can be worn like clothes, shrugged and resettled with all the folds and nuance of cloth." Galan offered a hesitant smile. "The world is full of beauty, It is the job of the artists to uncover it and exalt it, just as it is the Scientists' jobs to try to explain all that mystery and wonder."

He sat in silence for a moment, unsure of if he had said too much. So he glanced away, rubbing at his smudged fingertips (an endless and hopeless battle). The other was explaining his familiars, and Galan looked at them in turn. He greeted simply, "Hello Caroline, hello Rose."

As Galan explained his own definition, Gaius slowly closed his eyes, envisioning the words in his mind. Easily he could picture plenty of moments he'd encountered that fit the descriptions that the goblin was illustration, making his casual grin cut further along his face. Petite wings even lay loosely behind him as he nodded ever so subtly in agreement. Yeah, that all sounded about right.

One dark eye cracked open, the vibrant iris peering back over to the goblin with the additional little trickle of words, causing his brow to crook ever so slightly, "Not only good with a pencil, but pretty good with words you are." a true wordsmith this guy was. How interesting.

Leaning back onto his hands, the mutant closed his eye again as the vespercat on his shoulder bumped its soft little head against his cheek to rub against it, "Would have to say I agree with ya. Not many people can see the true depth of something so diverse and subjective as beauty." he calmly replied.

After a beat of pause from himself, Gaius cracked open his orbs again, "And I'm Gaius." he mused. One hand lifted to dip into his pocket containing the little salamanders, pulling one out at a time to settle between both he and the goblin, "you're more than welcome to hold and pet any of my little friends here."

"That's very kind of you to say," Galan murmured, blushing teal a little and shifting one of his pencils by way of distraction. Then the other introduced himself and Galan looked up again.

"I'm Galan," he offered in return, smiling sweetly. He watched, curiously, as Gaius pulled a handful of salamanders from his pockets and let them wriggle about on the grass.

"Oh my!" he declared softly, leaning forward to peer at the little creatures. Gingerly he put a finger out to rub at the cheek of one of them, hoping intensely that it wouldn't bite him or burn him, or any other such thing.

"It's very much a pleasure to meet you, Galan." the hallowed replied smoothly, quite enjoying not only the intellectual conversation, but the company as well.

The salamanders all blinked their beady little eyes at Galan, following the slender digit that was offered their way in unison. Each daintily extended their necks ever so slightly to sniff at the finger, before bumping it lightly with their rounded noses. Eventually, they crawled closer, and began to help themselves to carefully climbing up onto the hovering hand, each waiting for the other ahead of them before following suit.

They explored the sleeves of the goblin, nosing at the edge to peer beneath, and even venture further along said path! Chuckling, Gaius canted his head, "Ever thought of getting a few of your own? Mine seem quite fond of you. A creature won't go near one they sense has an ill energy."
