Akara trailed her fingers along her mother’s writing, a small smile curling up the corners of her mouth. It was nice to hear from her parents, and for it to be good news was good as well. Bother her and the baby were doing well and Lithian and Casseth were already on their way. Which meant that her mother could give birth at any moment — may have even done so already. When the door to her home opened, Kara glanced up, simple smile growing into a grin. “Rinn,” Kara said as she stood and moved to embrace her mate. “Mom sent a letter. She’s doing great.” She reached up, placing a kiss to his lips before pulling back and continuing on. “Do you think you’d be up for a trip to Ayr? I miss my parents so much and I want to be there to see my new brother.”

Nesrinn raised an eyebrow as Kara pulled away from the kiss and started talking again. He waited until she was quiet again before speaking up himself. “Anywhere you wanna go, Kara.” He moved back towards her, arms reaching out to tug her back in close and catching her up in another kiss.

When Nesrinn pulled back, Kara couldn’t help but return the grin that was plastered on his face. Her goofy, loving mate would do anything for her and she was forever grateful to have him in her life. They’d been through one of the toughest things couples could go through and they’d made it out of the deep end and were finally back on the surface. The move to Tukyere had done Akara loads of good and with her small healing business she had enough clients to keep her occupied when Rinn wasn’t around.

They gave themselves a couple of days to get things in order before they headed off to Ayr. The sea breeze was a welcome change of pace from the dry air of Tukyere and they made the trip to Ayr in no time. Though she didn’t want to waste too much time, Kara and Rinn decided it was best to stay at an inn for the night and then travel inward, to where her parents had built their home. Kara was awake rather early the next morning — ready to get moving.

Forty years.

Sitting crouched with his youngest child, Zaeyn’s infant fingers gripping a single of Detraeus’ digits like a grown hand clutching to a log, Detraeus mused that it was a long time. A very long time to yet again introduce something so young to his life. And yet, he felt ready this time. Much as he deeply loved his first two, he recognized in retrospect that he had been young, then, and ill-prepared—too young. Too frightened. Too new to all of it.

At Zaeyn’s tug, he let his finger be guided in, and a moment later, the boy’s mouth was on it, bestowing the digit in slobber as he gurgled. Detraeus leaned, touching a kiss to the child’s forehead before glancing out over the balcony. He’d settled with him outside there, for a time, so that they might both enjoy the morning sun and fresh air and take advantage of the rare, temperate and mild weather. The choice proved to be doubly beneficial when he spotted company approaching over the bluffs and up the tall hill towards their house. Shifting one hand down to better support his cargo before moving, Detraeus stood and moved in through the open door and into the house.

“Ara,” he said, calling out to his mate with enough volume to be heard while still keeping his tone in check in light of Zaeyn’s ears. “We have company…Akara seems to have gotten our missive.”

Araceli blinked at the mention of company, confusing soon turning to joy at the mention of their daughter’s name. “Akara’s here?” Ara asked even as she was already moving towards their front door. It seemed like it had been so long since they’d last seen their children — Ataya more so than Akara since he was moving around at all times, it seemed — and she was more than delighted that their daughter had finally arrived. Though unexpected, since they’d recieved no word from her, it was most definitely not unwanted. Ara pulled open the door just as Kara and her mate, Rinn, came up their path.

Huge smiles instantly formed across Kara and Rinn’s face as Araceli hurried towards them and embraced her daughter. She tugged her close, tucking her face against her daughter’s wild curls. “Oh, I missed you so.” When she had finally had enough of the hug, for now, Araceli pulled back and held her daughter at arm’s length. “You look lovely.” She pulled Kara back in for another hug before turning her attention to Nesrinn and pulling him into a hug as well, though this one wasn’t as long.

“Missed you too, mom,” Kara said as she watched her mom move to embrace Rinn. “Looking fabulous, as well. I take it from the lack of baby bump, you’ve already had my baby brother, hm?” It saddened her, a bit, that she hadn’t been here for his arrival but she was here now. And that was all that mattered. She only wished that she’d had someway to get in contact with her brother. When she glanced from her mom and up to the house, Kara spotted her father, along with her new baby brother. She grinned and moved, closing the distance between them quickly.

As Araceli started down the stairs and out the front door to greet their daughter, Detraeus moved behind at more leisurely pace, careful with his cargo—who, for his part, seemed content to drool and peer over his shoulder. Detraeus was, of course, elated at the opportunity to see Akara again — his children, both of his older children — never were around so much as he would have liked. But with her, came her mate, and also a reminder of who wasn’t present.

Reaching the bottom of the stairs, Detraeus wondered, not for the first time, how long it would be before his eldest son even knew he had a brother—or, worse still, if he ever would. That thought, though, was too grim for the moment, laced with discontent, concern, and fear over things that might not ever be. So, he tucked it away.

His gaze, as he made it out, moved immediately to Akara, already approaching, and his posture relaxed, expression softening. “You made it safe…” Attention flicking briefly to Nesrinn, his tail flicked once, stiffly, before he returned his focus to his daughter. “It is good to see you…and you know, that if you felt inspired to come see your mother and I for occasions short of new life or an end of worlds, you would still be welcome…”

Akara smiled and reached out, hugging her father and taking care not to smoosh her baby brother in the process. “Yes, I know daddy. But my shop takes a lot of work. Nesrinn and I are the only ones around to take care of it. I can’t just leave it sit all the time — we’d lose business.” She reached up, placing a light kiss to her father’s cheek. “Besides, you’re more than welcome to visit us as well.

Araceli smiled as she approached with Rinn in tow. “Come, let’s head inside, hm? I’m sure you two must be exhausted and hungry.”

Kara grinned and nodded as she pulled away from her father. “I would love some tea. I’ll help.” She linked her arm with her mother’s and the two of them headed inside, leaving Nesrinn and Detraeus to follow behind them.

Detraeus grunted, cheek warming under her kiss before following after when everyone else slipped inside. Since they hadn’t known precisely when — or even, technically, if — Akara would arrive, there had been no special preparation for her arrival, but the house was well enough stocked and the town near enough that, even if she chose to stay for a period of days, her presence would be easily facilitated. After water was set on to heat, and as Zaeyn began to stir in his arms, he spared her a glance.

Every time he looked at her now, it struck him how grown she looked. A bizarre thing, to see, though he had watched most every minute of it, until now. But ever in his mind, he would imagine a young girl.

When she sat, he adjusted his grip, and then hoisted carefully, offering to deposit Zaeyn in her lap, to which his eyes widened a fraction, small legs ‘kicking’ the free air. “Zaeyn,” Detraeus said, “sit with your sister a moment.” He glanced to her. “You should know one another.”

Kara blinked, muscles tensing slightly and cheeks reddening just a smidge. She had not expected her father to plop her baby brother into her lap so soon. She was not prepared for this. In an instant, she remembered the child she had lost and as she held her brother in her arms, Kara had to close her eyes and take a deep breath — fearing that she would cry any moment. When the beat of her heart calmed a bit and she felt the couch shift and Nesrinn’s familiar weight and magic settled beside her, she opened her eyes. She gave him a small smile as he laid his hand against the small of her back and rubbed. Kara turned her gaze back to her baby brother. “Hello there Zaeyn. I’m your big sister.”

Araceli stood back, watching her daughter closely as she held her son. She tilted her head, observing the range of emotions that fluttered over her face and how much she relaxed once Nesrinn was near to her. It comforted something inside of her, to know that her baby girl was well taken care of. It was obvious the pair cared for each other dearly. She moved over to where Detra sat and leaned against the side of the chair. “How have things been, Kara?”

Kara blinked, startled slightly by her mother’s voice. She glanced up and smiled. “Pretty good, actually. The shop is doing great and I have a few repeat clients. Mostly older hybrids that don’t really trust pureblood healers.”

“That’s good,” Araceli worried her bottom lip as she debated on bringing up another subject entirely. “And other things? They’re...doing well?”

Kara frowned for a moment, not quite following her mother’s line of thinking — until she glanced down at her brother. “They’re...fine. I haven’t really had much time to think about it. I suppose that’s a good thing. The shop has helped.”

Araceli smiled as her heart ached a little for her daughter’s loss. She couldn’t imagine losing a child herself. She’d have been devastated — was devastated to lose a grandchild. “Have you thought of…?”

Kara gave a small shrug as Nesrinn’s hand stopped moving on her back and he side glanced to Detraeus. “We’ve talked about it but not really decided on anything yet.”
