Evan had always gone to the movies. Sometimes it wasn't because he wanted to, but because his parents had forced him out of the house to try and be social. He didn't want to be social, and the movie theater had just been a great place to hide. He'd sit in the back row, by the doors, just in case something happened.

And then slowly he'd move closer. Slowly he started to enjoy getting out and going to the movies. For an hour and a half-to three hours, he could get involved in someone else's life—someone else's story.

He could pretend like he was someone else, somewhere else. Some figure in the wind who was just there to observe but never really played a part.

Well. That was kind of what he was now, only he felt bad about it. It was easier when you got to be some intangible spectator who was enjoying the world around you.

Then, he liked the movie theater. Just not the late night to-and-fro.

Until he met her, and it was suddenly bearable again. He looked forward to their biweekly meetings. On the days he didn't feel like getting out of bed, he'd gotten out of bed. Not just for the movie, but for the engagement. For social interaction he could participate in without feeling judged. Over the years, what had started as simple movie commentary ahd evolved into a friendship he could rely on.

Tonight, he'd shown up early—like usual. He didn't like to be alone after dark, so he'd been at the theater for an hour already, sitting in plain sight and playing on his phone. He hadn't grown as much as he would have liked, so he still looked like some young high schooler. He was in dark clothes; tight pants and an oversized jacket with deep pockets, like always. He was snuggled up and now that it was getting close to their rendezvous time kept glancing up every minute or so to look for his movie companion. They always arrived early for a little catching up and made sure to give themselves ample time to get snacks (even if Evan always whined) and good seats.
