RP Logs Bardess Ookami Ember Heart was doing what she loved to do best, specifically, she was relaxing. She was stretched out, half buried in the wet sand right at the water's edge. Even with the cold n** of winter in the air, the sand held enough of the day's warmth to feel luxurious against her sides.
She had burrowed herself in deeply, so that her tail was all that remained in the water, flicking lazily about, and her head was out of the other side of the artificial sand dune that was her body and its covering. She had managed to scrape together a mound of sand to serve as a pillow, and she was resting her head upon it, her short black hair trailing down like so much seaweed. She had rotated so she was laying on one side, her face turned to point upwards, so she could watch the sky, so she could trace the progress of her beloved sun as it made its daily sojourn across the orange.
She knew that when the sky lit aflame with the pretty colors of sunset, that would be the time when she would have to retreat to the watery depths, lest she freeze. However that was yet hours off, and she could pass her time until then daydreaming and imagining pictures found in the clouds that formed overhead. It was warm, it was comfortable, it was peaceful, and it was wonderful.
Near about the only thing she could say against spending her day as such, was that it was lonely. Ember was a warm person, inside and out, and she liked to be warm. That didn't mean only physical comfort, she liked to consider herself to be a caring and kind individual. However, to be kind, one must have someone to be kind to, and spending too long in isolation made her yearn for someone to talk to, someone to be nice to, because she did enjoy being nice ever so much, and she took no shame in the faced that she liked being appreciated. She didn't do kind things for the sake of appreciation, but that did not make it any less nice when someone thought well of her. Making someone smile always made her smile herself, always made her feel... well... warm. Inside.
So she did wish there was someone near about with whom she could talk the day away, however she was content, if need be, to rest in solitude. It was far too nice a day for her to worry about feeling lonely. Someone would come, or they wouldn't, and she would have a wonderful day, either way. She was sure of it.
After all, she had sky and sea and surf and sand and she was warm and she was comfortable.
Divena Lian picked her way along the beach, enjoying the way the water lapped at her hooves. "This is nice," she mused aloud. Her familiar had taken off to hunt for seashells or something. Usually she would fly over the ocean or beach... but this, walking along and enjoying the day was nice. She glanced at her companion, the reason she was walking. Without wings Kyad could hardly follow her. Besides, her wings weren't healed enough to carry her weight yet. She would enjoy it, she decided. Her sixth sense, her gift, whatever you wanted to call it, tingled. It was a sensation she was beginning to recognize as a warning that she was going to meet someone important, soon.

RP Logs Bardess Ookami Kyad walked with her, smiling warmly. "It is," he said, and he meant it. Nothing was trying to kill her or attack her. It was quite pleasant. He didn't trust it, not for a second, but until the inevitable danger, he'd enjoy it. Or try to, at least.
Ember felt the slight vibrations in the sand that might mean that someone was coming. Might,. The problem with wet sand along the shore was that the same vibrations that warned her of an approaching Soquli or ten were the ones that informed her a hermit crab colony was passing nearby her. Of those possibilities, the later she could ignore. The former, however, usually meant that she should call out that she was there, to avoid tripping anyone again.
She had done that before, tripped someone accidentally, and she still felt terrible about the whole incident, this much later. It had been ages back, and her hardly more than a foal when it happened, but she had nearly hurt someone, and that poor little soq had been ever so angry.
If she had reason the believe it was a crab or something similar, she would have given in to the temptation to just close her eyes again and drift off to sleep. Or rather drift back to sleep. She hadn't even been aware that she had been dozing, until the vibrations had awoken her.
She tried to turn her head to face the source of the mild disturbance, but couldn't, not easily. Whoever or whatever it was approaching her was coming from the direction that her back faced, and her neck did not have nearly enough give.
If it were simply something small like crabs, or even walking gulls, she would be irritated with herself for having moved to be sure. But if it was a soquili coming towards her, and she didn't move, she would regret it even more. She might make them angry, or hurt someone again, or worse. She wasn't quite sure what realistically fell under the category of worse, in this scenario, but she would prefer to not find out first hand.
The vibrations were not lessening, if anything they were growing closer and more pronounced. That, plus the fear that she might inadvertently hurt someone decided her. She reluctantly rolled over, shedding sand as she moved, reminding herself rather uncomfortably of a beached whale, or a stranded dolphin. It was not the most reassuring comparison that she could have made, really.
As soon as her flanks hit the air, coated here and there with damp clumps of sand, she was shockingly and almost painfully reminded that it was indeed winter. COLD!!!!!!!!
"COLD! COLD COLD COLD!" she cried out, gasping from the suddenness of it. All thoughts of other Soquilli or the pleasant day were momentarily dashed from her mind as she thrashed and struggled to get her considerable bulk back into the water. She had found the shallows a bit chilly, earlier in the day. Now, compared to being wet and exposed to that ill wind, it was blissfully warm. She sank up to her nose, unaware that she had attracted attention.... Kyad, however, had very much heard the shouting, saw the riot of motion... and quickly moved to place himself between Lian and what ever this foul new threat might be. He knew it was too calm to last... Divena Lian eyed her companion, trying to decide if she should be annoyed or amused. She opted for amused, since there wasn't much she could do about it either way. She ignored his defensive stance and called out to the figure in the water, "Are you alright?" She hoped they hadn't startled anyone too much.

RP Logs Bardess Ookami A voice? Oh! Right! There had been a reason she had moved in the first place. She felt rather sheepish and pushed her whole head above water.
"Yes, sorry," she said quickly and apologetically. "I turned over a little too quickly, and didn't realize how cold it was. I hope I did not frighten you."
Was that as bad as last time? Should she have stayed as she had been, and just called out? Maybe... Maybe she really should just go deeper into the ocean and lose herself there, stay alone and out of the way.
No. Maybe this wasn't as bad as she feared it was. The mare had sounded amused, maybe she had amused them. The male, now that she could clearly see them both, well.... he didn't look amused. If she had to guess, she would say that he looked... defensive? No, that wasn't quite right. Protective? Yeah, that was it. Protective. She could work with that.
She hoped. Kyad flicked a quick glance back at Lian to be sure. She sounded alright, but he wanted to make sure she actually was so. Since the soquili seemed friendly enough for now, he would let her take the lead.
Verbally.
Physically he was still standing between them, and that wasn't going to change any time soon. Divena Lian eyed Kyad, waiting for him to move for a moment. When it became obvious that he wasn't going to, she rolled her eyes and called back to the water bound mare, "No, you didn't frighten me. You did startle my companion a bit, but he's somewhat skittish so I wouldn't worry about that if I were you. Please don't let us interrupt your day... you were sunbathing?" she guessed. Bardess Ookami "Sand bathing," she clarified, happily. "It is wonderful when the sand is warm and damp and surrounds you. All the sunlight streams down over you and fills the sand with its warmth." She closed her eyes happily. She had seen some Soquili wearing material over their bodies that they claimed was warm and comfortable, she wondered if maybe this wasn't the same. Her sand, their clothing. It was like being hugged by an octopus that had a few really fat overlapping legs, rather than a few thin ones. Well... without the stickers. She eyed a sea shell. Mostly.
"I am not skittish," he murmured softly to Lian. Divena "Close enough," she murmured to Kyad before returning her attention to the mer. "That does sound rather pleasant. I'll admit this is the first time I've been to the beach rather than just flying over it. May we stay for a bit? Or would that disturb you?"

RP Logs Bardess Ookami "Of course you may stay!" she said startled. "It wouldn't disturb me, and even if it would I have no say in who may be here or not simply because I arrived sooner than you did. If you did disturb me, it would be on me to leave, rather than me to expect you to do so."
She swam a bit closer to them, using her tail to keep her afloat. "But as I said, you aren't bothering me in the least. I love having pleasant company. Someone to talk to keeps the cold away nearly so well as the sun does," she said with a smile that was nearly as warm as the aforementioned gaseous sky ball.
And she meant it, too. She really did love having people around her, having someone kind to talk to, to whom she could be kind herself. They looked as though they would be that...well... kind of Soquili.
"I am Ember Heart, but you may call me Ember, or Heart, or pretty much anything you choose, really." "Isn't Ember, or Heart, or pretty much anything you choose a rather long name?" Kyad asked her. She stared at him for several long moments, trying to figure out if he was serious or not. The deadpan expression made it hard to tell.
So she schooled her expression to one just as serious and responded in a way that would be taken as his words were meant by him. She hoped.
"I suppose that is a rather long name, good sir," she said fighting to not break out into an impish grin, on the off chance that he was serious. "So I suppose it is best if you just call me Ember, then." "Ember then. Got it. Lian, this is Ember then. Ember then, this is Lian."
Now she was fairly certain that he was teasing her. She eyed him critically, then turned her gaze to his companion. Lian. If that was her name. For all she knew it was like Ember then, a joke of his own making. If that was the case, she was honestly at a loss for what the original name might have been. Nothing came easily to mind, at the least.
"Would it be terribly rude of me to ask," she addressed this to Lian, " if he is always like this?" She rather hoped he was, he seemed fun. It would be nice to have some new friends, and drylanders would be more visible than she would, if they sat to chat with her while she was burrowed into the delightfully warm and damp sand. "I don't want to be rude," she elaborated, "but he seems fun, and I think I may be being presumptuous in imagining that the three of us might one day be friends, if you two would care for that."
She gave them another warm smile, as warm as she could manage. If they said no, then she would leave it at that, but she rather hoped that they would say yes to being her friends. Divena Lian had watched Kyad tease the mer and shook her head slightly. "He's like this sometimes," she admitted. "Though with me, he mostly grumbles, yells, or twitches. I can't imagine why, though... and I don't believe you're being presumptuous at all. I enjoy good company." When said company wasn't trying to attack her, anyway.

RP Logs Bardess Ookami "You, I'm protecting," Kyad said, predictably, in a grumble. "Someone has to, and before you argue, yes, someone does."
"That's sweet," she said softly, before Lian could argue, if she were going to. Having someone to be protective over, having someone being protective over you. Like a mix of family and close friends then?" she guessed, giving them a warm smile as she bobbed closer to them. She liked this pair already.
"I would recommend you rest in the water, but the air is bitingly cold once you come out of it," as well she just learned. It was a shame though because - comparatively at least - the water was pleasantly warm once you got used to it. But unlike her, they couldn't rest in the deep waters after the sunset to warm themselves. She always felt bad for those chained to the land. Their world was limited to sand and rocks, they'd never know the joys of deep sea vents or the beauty of coral. Divena Thinking of the last time she had been in the ocean Lian shuddered. "No," she quickly said. "Water and feathers do not mix, I'm afraid." She fluffed up the feathers on her wing, as a overt display of what she meant. Bardess Ookami Kyad moved closer to her, nuzzled her once reassuringly. He did not know what had scared her so, but he would find a way to protect her from it going forward. She never needed to fear anything else, at least... not while he was with her.
"They don't?" she asked, perplexed. "Why ever not? Ducks swim all the time, and they have feathers, do they not? I'm not sure what feathers has to do with it." She frowned, that didn't sound right. "Have to do with it?" she asked. She shook her head. "Sorry," she murmured. Then she returned to the topic at hand.
Well... at hoof.
"I'm not trying to push you into anything. If you don't want to swim, of course you do not have to."
She did smile to watch the affection from the surly male, however. He seemed to care about her, he protected her. It was a lovely thing to see, and it made her feel warm, just to witness it. Divena Lian shot Kyad an exasperated smile. “I’m fine,” she assured him. To Ember, she explained, “I’m not a duck. My feathers aren’t designed for water, nor is my body. I was in the ocean once, for a rather unwilling swimming trip. I was fortunate to find a… helpful… mer who assisted me back to land. For a few of my feathers.” Bardess Ookami "I am grateful that he helped you, but concerned that someone would barter for such assistance. If you ever do decide to try again, I promise, my aid if needed will be freely given." "Do you recall who the Mer was?" Kyad asked grimly. Someone needed to explain a few things to him. Or her. Divena "I appreciate the offer," Lian told Ember with a small smile. She ignored Kyad's question. She doubted he'd find a mer in the ocean. Bardess Ookami Ember gave them both a warm smile. "You're welcome, of course. Normally I would say that anyone would offer the same, I'm sorry that I cannot." Divena "It's enough that you have," Lian reassured her. She started to say more but stopped when an uncertain feeling washed over her. There was something important... She frowned as she tried to chase down the feeling. Something... pulling her back home. Concern washed through her. She wasn't sure if it was a good sensation or a bad, but she did know that she needed to get home."Oh dear," she murmured. She glanced at Kyad. "I... I think we should go..." Bardess Ookami "Of course. Thank you for your pleasant company," he said, nodding to Ember. "Be well," she said to them both, offering a warm smile. Divena Lian returned her smile with a small one of her own. "I hope we meet again for a longer visit." Bardess Ookami "I will watch for you," she promised, nodding. It would be lovely.
