With the recently discovered Yaeli, the land of Tendaji has been abuzz with talk and gossip about their new neighbors. They're odd, they're strange and skittish, their eyes glow - but that can't possibly be true most say - the word on the street is that they're starting to leave their island. Those that had met the Yaeli know that it's an odd thing to hear. They were terrified of the outsiders, why would they leave their safe villages...
Rumors are filling the toxic island where the Alkidikes extremists were banished along with the Matron. Rumors of monsters clawing their way out of the earth with oil black skin and glowing evil eyes that are even weirder than the strange monsters that landed upon their shores just one year ago. The Yaeli say that their gaze can steal the soul of any person dumb enough to get too close and they're vicious beings trying to take their children.
These rumors have reached the main land as well, mostly through the few Yaeli that have decided they would rather face the scary but similar earthling races than to have to find out what the terrifying monsters want with them and their land.
Is there any truth to these rumors or are the Yaelians seeing things?
[Yaeli characters can respond to the event with their own opinions on the rumors.]
Akiyal's clear crystal gaze caught and held on the starry night sky just beyond the open window of a home that wasn't his, from a room that wasn't his, on blankets that weren't his, and with people that weren't his family. He swallowed and held his breath, unease creeping through him with the setting of the sun. 'Night three...' Usually, he wouldn't mind a change of scenery. There was nothing wrong with Janella and her son, and Aki didn't mind being left to his own devices.
But he'd expected his father to be gone one night. Maybe two. Never three. If he was gone this long, it surely meant he wasn’t liable to return. It didn't seem plausible that so many people he knew could disappear into the night, one after another, year after year. Was that how everyone was going to leave him? They'd go on a mission and be gone forever? Would Xilarn- father- would father not come back? Ever?
A prickle of horrified dread rippled its way up his spine, and Akiyal tore his gaze from the window, fingers curling tightly in the sheets.
"Here you are, darling dearest," his babysitter, Janella cooed as she handed Aki a ceramic mug full of steaming chocolate. Last night she’d realized (with some surprise) that Aki hadn’t expected his father to be gone long. Xilarn had told her a week, and she’d expected his son to be prepared for that, at least insomuch as knowing he’d have to wait seven days for his return. Unfortunately, Aki had not known, and he’d not been pleased. Count on Fire Earthlings to shove their problems off on someone else. She tried not to show how miffed she was at the Oban man. Instead, Jan perched on the edge of the bed next to Akiyal and offered him a small smile. "I don't ever expect kiddos to crawl into bed of their own accord, cause you know Kan-"
“Mother!” As if summoned by a mystical force, the other youngster tore into the room. He was only a year Aki’s senior, but at least twice as loud and certainly rambunctious. Of course, it was his own home. Aki didn’t blame him. Kan pounced at them, throwing his weight onto the bed, and earning a gasp from Aki as he tried to keep his drink from spilling at the disturbance. “Do we really have to sleep now? I’m not tired, and we gotta lotta stuff to do.”
“Is that right?” Janella snorted. “I suppose the whole house needs a good dusting, so if you’re up for it…”
Kan rolled his cerulean-toned irises and groaned loudly. He crawled up to the head of the bed, gave a wiggle to encourage Akiyal over to ‘his’ side, and shimmied beneath the covers. “That’s mother’s work,” he grunted disenchantedly. “I’m not cleaning nobody’s house.”
Janella snorted and shifted to accommodate her son’s nudging (kicking) legs. “Then you’ll do the thing kids do and go to sleep.”
“Not without a story.”
“Oh, aye. Not without a story. What we you like to hear tonight? The Fisherman’s Pearls? Ten Little Kinfa? How about-?”
“I want to tell the story,” Kan asserted. He sat up and smoothed the blankets out in front of him, before fixing his gaze on his mother. “It’s about monsters. Etheira said she heard her dad telling her mom about it. They come from that new island. And they pop up outta the ground. They got glowing eyes like them Yaeli do, and when you look in em, you lose your soul.”
Aki flinched, his irises going wide.
“They got big ‘ole claws and teeth and they eat Earthling babies. And they’re huge, so they need a lotta babies to fill ‘em up. They’re always hunting for stray little boys and girls to take in their jaws and drag back to their island. Etheira said her father saw one of them tear apart a whole mammu that got in its way. And it just kept going afterwards. They make this sound like- kiiiiiyaaaaacht and that’s when you know. They’re. Gonna-”
“Enough, Kan!” Janella snapped, pegging her son in the back of the head with her outstretched palm. “Oh, you. That sounds like a bunch of nonsense to me.” And she highly doubted her already-worried-for-his-father younger charge wanted to hear anything else about it. Aki looked almost grossly pale now, with great blue saucers for eyes. “It’s nothing, dear, nothing,” she assured him sweetly. “You know adults say things to scare kiddos all the time. Even if they were real, they live across the ocean. They can’t get you here, hm?”
Aki gave a grunt and roll of his shoulders, then took a very deep swig of hot chocolate.
Janella patted his head. “I’m sure he’ll be back soon. Aaaand… Why don’t we stay up a little later, just tonight. We can make marshmallow cookies. That’ll, er, put you to sleep right quick. Or something.”
