What do you do when you have nowhere to go? When you have no one to turn to? When your whole life turns out to be… a lie? Death did not know. She had split from Alik some time ago. Despite his protests and worry over her still-bleeding wounds at the time, she had forced her only friend to leave her and flee to the skies. He had wings, and she did not. He had stared down at her solitary eye and growled that they would meet again. That she had better live or he’d kill her. She had felt happy in that moment. Despite everything she was, in the end someone had still cared for her.

She stopped running when she sloshed through the river and into the forest. A coat of mud was thrown atop the blood that already stained her. She felt grime chafe in between her claws as she stumbled over roots and knocked into low-hanging branches. Dense forests were not convenient places of travel for someone of her height and bulk. But this was one more reason that she should travel this way. If Conqueror had sent her lackies after Death, they would not think to come through here. A sharp sting against her side drew Death from her thoughts. A branch had poked against one of the claw marks that marred her side. Blood welled back to the surface of the angered wound and dripped lazily down her back. She inhaled deeply and continued at a quickened pace, hoping for a break in the thick copse of trees soon.

Finally, finally! It seemed like she had been fumbling through the woods for ages when her golden eye caught sight of the literal light at the end of the tunnel. She hurried along, almost tripping over a root for the hundredth time before she broke the treeline with an exhale of absolute relief. She looked up and saw that the sun had risen. She had been running all night. She was… she was safe. At least, she thought she was safe. She looked around at what she could from her limited angle. It looked like she was in a clearing somewhere in the forest. It was small, but she noted with a rush of happiness that there was a little stream that cut through at the corner and ran into a decent-sized pond. And flowers! There were flowers and plants - most she’d never even seen before - everywhere. This was… beautiful. This could be her new home. At the very least, she could nurse her wounds and recover here before moving on. After all, there was the possibility of Conqueror or even Mother - NO….Lux - coming after her. However, after the carnage that Death had left behind… she doubted that anyone smart would come after her now that she wasn’t under Lux’s hooves.

Death sighed. The weariness in her bones and the soreness of her wounds finally pushed to the forefront of her conscious now that she was safe. The pond looked incredibly inviting and she took a few hesitant steps before rushing to the edge of it and peering in. She looked horrible and bloody. She was definitely looking the part of the monstrous killer she was. Her gelatinous mane made small plip-plops as it dripped into the pond, rippling her reflection. With a shake of her head, she stepped into the pond. It was surprisingly deep for a pond, but Death was unsurprised that it only went up to her knees in the end. She was pretty large. Folding her limbs and closing her eye, she was able to get her flayed and stinging back submerged. She hissed as the cold water washed over and cleaned the gashes that marred her skin. The water around her had become a murky red, and Death was glad that her eye was closed so that she did not see it. It was relaxing to be in the water and in complete darkness. It was so relaxing, in fact, that she felt herself nodding off. The exhaustion of the day finally took a hold of her, and she angled her head to rest against the plush grass surrounding the pond.

Iris was not good with violence or blood. She was a peaceful Ulun’suti with no interest in bloodshed that strayed from hunting for food. So when she returned to her little flowery home after meeting up with her unicorn friends the night before to find bloody water trickling downstream and a body in her pond… well… She was proud of herself for not immediately screaming, but she was really freaking out. She dug her claws into the dirt and observed the (possibly dead?) stranger in her pond. She could only see their skeletal head and ripped apart back. They had an odd mane, like some ‘Suti’s she had encountered, it didn’t look like hair. It was a deep reddish-pink that Iris found herself comparing to some of the flowers she herself wore. Her eyes trailed back to the creature’s torn up back, which was slowly becoming more visible as the water cycled the murky red coloration away. It looked like there were multiple claw and bite marks. Iris felt herself get lightheaded just looking at them. She morbidly wondered if the creature had always had a skeletal head or if they had been here for a while. Feeling her stomach turn at the thought, Iris pushed that thought away. The creature could not have been here that long, Iris had only been gone one night! Regardless, the situation was eating at her and she found herself nervously clawing at the edge of the pond before leaning over the body’s head and trying to keep the panic out of her voice.

“Are you okay?! Please don’t be dead!”

A worried voice cut through Death’s relaxed doze and she shot up to her full height, sending waves out of the pond. She blinked her eye frantically and swivelled her head, trying to find the source. Her chest heaved and she turned her body. Her eye locked onto three surprised blue eyes. A small (very small in comparison to Death) ‘Suti was sitting on the edge of the pond with multiple wide-eyes trained on Death. Death inhaled sharply and looked back and forth for an escape. She moved too quickly for her injured body and she tripped out of the pond and onto her face. She couldn’t help the pained whine that escaped her throat as the wounds on her body were scraped against the grass. She kept her eye on the stranger, her chest rising and falling erratically as she panicked. How could she have been so stupid? The second she was safe she had let all her combat training go to waste and she had fallen asleep! And now this tiny creature covered in flowers would end the monster’s life. What a fitting end to die at the claws of something so pure.

Iris had flailed backwards when the stranger had shot out of the water. She felt all her eyes widen while she took in all of them. They were huge! Their head rocked back and forth, but it didn’t face her until their whole body turned, and she caught the gaze of the golden eye in their chest. She opened her mouth to say something, but snapped it shut when the creature scrambled to escape and fell helplessly to the ground. They were really hurt and… afraid of her? She couldn’t comprehend how she could be the scary one in this situation, but she slowly crawled on her belly so that she could be at eye-level with the frightened creature.

“Um… hi there…” Iris started awkwardly. “Please don’t be afraid. You look really hurt and I just want to help you. Can I do that?”

Death narrowed her eye suspiciously, trying to crawl further away from the strange tiny creature that was slowly getting closer.

“You… are not afraid?” she asked.

Iris immediately felt for her. The tiny and broken feminine voice that had slipped from the skeletal face had punched right through to her big heart. She knew what it felt like to have others be afraid. She had five eyes - none of them being in her actual eye sockets! She didn’t know what would have happened if she hadn’t grown up in such a loving and judgement-free environment. But she looked at this stranger and saw what could have been, and it made her angry and sad and more determined to help the fallen mare.

“No, I am not afraid,” Iris answered. "Why would I be afraid?"

Death paused. "No... no everyone is afraid of me," she whispered. "Everyone is afraid of The Beast that brings Death to her foes"

She painfully heaved herself up to her claws, swaying in place. She was so weak. In this moment, any of her enemies - Lux's enemies could strike and end her. Would she even try to fight them at this point?

"I must leave," she declared, before tripping over her heavy limbs and crashing back down to the dirt. She hissed at the new abrasions. "I... I must leave..."

Iris strained her ears to hear the whispered ramblings of the strange and scared giant in front of her. She caught bits and pieces, and jumped back a bit at the mare's sudden declaration and subsequent faceplant. Iris winced and slowly continued her crawl until she was just a foot or so away from the wounded stranger.

"You don't have to... leave you know?" she said calmly. "You can stay until you are healed at least. Please, you look really hurt,"

She wouldn't say that she had a habit of collecting wounded strays, but the large number of woodland creatures that made it a point to visit her often would say different. Iris was just a nurturer by nature. Whether it be plants or flowers or living creatures, she couldn't help but take care of those around her. Having a scared and wounded mare in her pond was setting off all sorts of her nurturing instincts.

"At least let me patch you up, please," she pleaded.

This tiny creature was stubborn. Death groaned as her efforts to stand again just further tugged at her injuries. The instincts that had been pounded into her head since she was a foal were telling her to lash out and run, but her injuries prevented escape. When she was cornered she was supposed to kill whoever was preventing her escape, but there was enough blood on her claws and this small 'suti mare did not seem like a threat.

'Things are not always what they seem, Death' Lux's past words drifted through her mind and she clenched her jaw.

She stared at the mare that was now uncomfortably close and looking at her expectantly. Death's choices did not seem good. She could either refuse help and stumble into the forest and most likely die, or she could accept this stranger's help and only maybe die if the mare betrayed her. Lux would tell her to refuse the help of others and stab them in the back before they could stab her.... so Death would do the opposite.

"... okay."
