The sun was starting to go down, stretching long afternoon shadows over the footpath as Kirra skipped her way home from the park. It got dark far too early, in her opinion, and left her hardly any time to play outside. Her mum’s ‘be-home-by’s were getting earlier and earlier. And she’d gotten a new watch for Christmas, so she couldn’t even pretend to forget the time. The watch had a kitty face, but no numbers on it, which meant it was super-grown-up. You had to guess what the hands were pointing to.

Her mum had told her to be careful and come straight home. And her cousin had told her it was more dangerous here than where she used to live. But she was with her friend Briar most of the time, and it wasn’t even far. She could even see the top of her backyard tree from here, above the roofs, but it was a terrible climbing tree.

Her friend Briar had been showing her the best climbing trees, which were super-tall and super-awesome, even if she couldn’t reach some of the higher branches without the older boy’s help. But she could go out on the thin high branches that wouldn’t hold his weight, so it evened out. It was strange to look down with no leaves at all between her feet and the still-snowy ground.

The nine-year old slowed from skip-run and paused to examine a patch of pristine white, all drifted up against a corner wall. Snow was still a novelty to the Australian child, and this pile was much less dirty and melty than the stuff around the park. Kirra looked at her watch again, poring over the blank face. By her count, she still had plenty of time. If she ran all the way from here, she could still make it. So it wouldn’t hurt to stay a few more minutes. She crouched down by the side street entrance, out of the way of other pedestrians, and gathered up a handful of snow, patting it into a ball like she’d watched the other children do. It was like cold sand. Still weird.

It didn't feel as cold out as it should have, given the uniform Lt. Valentinite's was wearing. Still, she wore a fur coat loosely over top so as to not look too out of place, a coffee and a box of chocolates sitting on the bench next to her. The heart shape of the box was noticeably out of season, but perhaps with the appropriate holiday only one month away, no one would notice.

A new presence in the park caught her eye.

A child would be easy. They were so full of unnecessary energy anyway. But she would have to lure this one further away from the street.

"Hello, sweetie!" she called out, "Would you like a chocolate?"

Wait, that sounded suspicious. Maybe talking more would help...

"My boyfriend gave me a box, but I'm allergic....a-and I've been so hard on him these past few weeks, I didn't have the heart to tell him." The Negaverse agent removed the lid of her weapon to display the chocolates inside.

Kirra glanced up sharply at the adult voice nearby. She hadn’t noticed the lady on the bench at first, but the magic word ‘chocolate’ did wonders for focusing her attention. The little girl glanced around, but she couldn’t spot anyone else nearby who might be ‘sweetie’, and the lady was definitely looking at her. Kirra thought she was very pretty in her fluffy coat.

The lady kept talking, and a little crease of concern furrowed the child’s brows. Allergic to chocolate? That was the Worst Possible Thing! There were kids in her class who were allergic to, like, peanut butter and stuff. But no chocolate ever at all? That was terrible. Poor lady.

Half-formed snowball in hand, Kirra skipped obligingly closer. She knew that she shouldn’t take lollies from strangers, but the heart box was really pretty. It wouldn’t be bad to just look at the fancy chocolates inside. It would even be helping her if she ate one!

“Allergic sucks,” she said sympathetically, stopping a few steps away and leaning forward to peek into the open box.

“Why were you hard on him?” she asked. “I think you should tell him because you can get sick.” The nine-year-old relationship advisor nodded her head seriously, multi-coloured strands of hair bobbing with the movement.

The sob-story appeared to be working. Lt. Valentinite did her best to suppress a smirk. She just needed to lure the little scamp in closer.

"I just got angry for a lot of little things. These..."

She indicated the chocolates, leaning in to make them (and Kirra) closer to reaching distance.

"...these he intended as an apology, but... Well, I just couldn't refuse to take them. I'll tell him that I'm allergic later, I promise."

C'mon, kid.

Kirra frowned again, trying to work that one out. If she was angry, why was he apologising? When Kirra got angry, her mum always made her do the apology. Grown-ups were so weird. But if she was really going to tell her friend later, it was probably okay. And the lady was still holding out the box, like she hadn't changed her mind or anything. She seemed nice. Kirra wanted to help.

She moved closer, reaching out for the sweets all laid out in their box. But they were all so pretty. How could she pick?

"Are you sure it's okay?" she asked, looking up at the lady, her hand hovering over one of the chocolates.

With a rehearsed sweetness, Lt. Valentinite smiled as she grabbed Kirra's arm reassuringly.

"It's perfectly okay, honey..."

Her grip tightened as she began to draw out the life energy of the child. The smile didn't waver.

Puzzlement clouded Kirra’s face when the lady caught her arm. Was she taking the wrong chocolate? The lady hadn’t said! She looked down at her hand, waiting to see if the lady would guide her towards the one she should pick instead.

But the lady just smiled. Her words weren’t matching her actions, and Kirra couldn’t figure it out. Her head felt fuzzy. If it was really-truly okay, then why was she squeezing so tight?

“But. You’re hurting,” she whined, tugging weakly against the woman’s hold. Confusion was quickly giving way to distress. It wasn’t fair, you couldn’t say she was allowed and then squeeze her! She felt dizzy. She felt sick.

She was suddenly, scarily, too tired to get the words out. Kirra opened her mouth but all that came out was a high-pitched wailing scream.

Sorry for the long delay, meta ate me. But I think we're about ready for rescue party one?

Briar had followed up on his not-really-a-promise from their first meeting to show Kirra some good tree-climbing trees.

In fact it had turned into something that they had ended up doing quite a lot off together - because Kirra had turned out to be pretty decent at climbing trees and whilst he did have to give her a hand with some of the higher branches, Kirra could get out on the thinner branches that were too thin for him to even think about attempting.

It had been surprisingly fun which was perhaps why he was still climbing trees at a point which he would have considered too cold in the past.

The two of them had been tree climbing together earlier, however Briar hadn't actually headed home after parting from Kirra. Instead he had gone to pick up some cookies and then found somewhere to power up into superhero mode.

As Oort he had been planning to do a bit of looking out for monsters to make do the dust thing and had been munching absently on a cookie as he wandered back in the relative direction of where he and Kirra had been earlier when he heard the sudden scream...

And whilst Oort was not really the most experienced of senshi, he knew enough to know that screaming was bad.

He was faster in superhero mode and so it didn't take him long to track down the source of the screaming - although it wasn't one that he was expecting, his reddish eyes widening in shock as he took in the scene of the blonde woman and the chocolate box and Kirra.

"Hey you" he yelled as he started to dash towards the pair "Lady leave her alone!"

Although perhaps it might have sounded a bit more threatening if not for the fact that he was still clutching his half eaten cookie.

--------------------------------------------------------

Liryn had been out and about making his rounds - which pretty much translated into him wandering around and poking his nose into things.

In between playing cat-cat that is...

In fact playing cat-cat had been pretty profitable in that it had netted the tabby bobtail some scritches which Liryn had always been a sucker for and it had also netted him a bit of a girl's sandwich - well at least it had once she had finished cooing over how cute he looked.

Liryn was back to making his rounds however and had been debating mayhaps heading towards and dropping by Cat HQ - well at least that had been the plan right up until the point where he picked up on the chill of a chaos aura.

It felt like a Lieutenant from the feels at it and it also felt like it was relatively nearby - well at least close enough to be in paw trotting distance - which pretty much slated it for checking out in his book.

Liryn had been in the process of doing just that when he sensed the flare of a second aura - this one an order aura.

He trotted faster because whilst trying to track auras was never an exact science, not even for a mauvian, it felt like the two auras were pretty close to each other - and that was never generally a good thing.

Tallulah had dealt with kids often enough in her work as a lifeguard that she knew the difference between kids shrieking just to shriek and the scream of a kid who needed help - and this kid - this kid was in trouble.

She pulled her henshin pen to hand, bag of groceries dropping to the ground as she hurried off the footpath and into the woods in search of somewhere private to power up. Finding one, she did so, and then re-emerged in her beribboned splendor as Eternal Sailor Europa, pretty-frilled warrior of the deep etc etc etc.

Now, she could sense the true scale of this mess: negaverser. Chibi-senshi. Cat. Maybe another kid, but who knew? Civilians didn't have power signatures. She'd have to get over there and find out.

Europa hopped to it.

But she was pretty far away, so it was going to take a while.
