who: Ronan, Amity, and Nell
were: Port City Athletics Club
when: afternoon, early january
weather: coldcoldcold

January was always an interesting time to work at a gym, it was when the relatively calm group of regulars swelled into a manic crowd of people who made a new year's resolution to 'get healthy'. But since she had her own clients to deal with she generally didn't have much to worry about as far as they were concerned.

Regardless, she kept an eye on the door whenever someone came in, not quite sure who she was supposed to be looking for, but from the call she had earlier, she knew that she was expecting someone at least. And from the Lab, no less! Maybe they would bring along their raevan! Or maybe they were in the same boat as her and were still waiting on theirs! Either way, she was looking forward for a chance to meet someone else from the Lab.

A cold snap had descended on Gambino and Amity was left absolutely miserable.

Ever since the New Years party the temperature had dropped and continued dropping, leaving the frei with only two real options - try and brave the cold, or attempt to burn off her energy at home. Needless to say, neither really worked, and it didn't take long for the entire family to be driven up a wall. After a couple days of Amity doing the raevan equivalent of pacing the living room Ronan finally went to the Lab messaging board to try and find some help.

To his surprise, he found some.

Now Ronan and Amity were arriving at Port City Athletics Club, the frei gratefully shedding her copious parka and large scarf and handing them to Ronan once they were inside, giving herself a sort of whole body shake out. She was in her default outfit today, figuring it'd work just fine for working out. Now to just figure out who it was they were suppose to meet.

Fortunately enough Nell had spotted them as soon as Amity began to shed her winter gear, her ears a good enough clue that they were who she was looking for that she began to wind her way through the crowd before she spotted the tell-tale lack of legs.

"Hey! You must be Ronan, right? I'm Nell," she extended her hand with a broad smile first to Ronan, then Amity. "There's a rack over there if you didn't want to have to carry those around! What is it that I can help you two out with today?"

Ronan returned Nell's handshake and gave a smile of his own. "Pleasure to meet you." Hearing the mention of the coat rack Ronan went ahead and hung up Amity's parka and his own pea coat, coming back over a moment later.

"I'm hoping you can help out Amity here," he said, patting the frei's shoulder. "She usually climbs trees for exercise, but..."

"It's so cold!" she finished miserably, wings shivering as if remembering the winter wind cutting into them.

"Hmmm, that is quite the problem..." she said, nodding along as she tapped her chin thoughtfully. "I can look and see if there are any indoor climbing walls nearby if you wanted to keep climbing, but..." Her nose wrinkled in thought as she wracked her brain for something that would be energetic enough to work out her energy but wasn't boring and didn't need legs. Usually she would stick someone on a treadmill for a bit to at least work off some of their extra energy, but that would be kind of pointless in this case.

A triumphant smile spread across her face as her mind caught on to a solution, looking between Ronan and Amity quickly. "How much time do you two have? I think I have an idea that might work."

"Fairly free today at least, I decided to set aside some time from work to figure this out." Ronan was curious as to what solution Nell had thought of. The usual automated options of treadmills, bikes, and stepping machines were somewhat unusable, and his own routine of swimming wouldn't exact work either.

At this point Amity was slowly bouncing up and down, almost imitating shifting from foot to foot. "What is it?" The climbing wall had sounded different, but like Ronan she was curious as to what the woman had in mind.

"Excellent!" she clapped her hands together almost triumphantly, gesturing for both of them to follow her as she headed towards the back of the gym. "One of the back rooms is open for an hour or so, so we won't get any strange looks, annnnd," she trailed off as she opened the door to the room, holding it open for Amity and Ronan.

"How do you feel about an obstacle course?" It would take some time to set up, that was for sure, but getting Amity (and possibly Ronan if he felt like it) to help carry things would count towards part of the workout, and if they wanted to keep coming back she could have it set up for them by the time they got here. And an obstacle course, custom built for Amity, would be able to be made so she could pinpoint things that she was good at or needed help with, and depending on how it was set up it could also be a good way for her to work on her problem-solving skills as well.

Plus obstacle courses were fun.

"Ohhh!!!"

Before Ronan could do anything Amity winged away and started exploring the room, even taking a moment to fly up to the ceiling as he was left standing next to Nell. He sighed. After several months her disappearing act was almost starting to feel inevitable. At the very least she usually seemed to stay within viewing distance. Mostly.

"Sounds like a wonderful idea," Ronan said to Nell. A moment later he cupped his hands around his mouth, shouting out to the frei. "So is that a yes or no on the obstacle course?"

"YES!"

A grin split across her face as she watched Amity zoom around the room, seemingly quite pleased with this development. This certainly seemed like it was going to work, she was certainly enthusiastic and energetic enough. The room as it was wasn't terribly exciting, a line of stationary bikes were pushed up against one wall, there was a TV mounted on the wall in a corner, and a rack of weights underneath it.

For now, at least. "Well alright then! What I was thinking of was taking some of the equipment that's not being used," she explained as she walked over to a door in the corner, "And build something that would make you have to move in a few different ways to get around. Not that flying is a bad thing, but," she trailed off with a grunt as she heaved a pile of mats out of the closet and dropped them by the door. "But you gotta give your arms something to do sometimes, huh?"

A stack of stepping blocks used for aerobics followed the mats, followed by a rather large ball. "I can probably grab a few more things, but this is mostly what we have to work with, if you wanted to help me set something up you might have fun with this time?"

At the mention of using something other than flight Amity floated back down towards the ground, taking on a thoughtful expression as she reached back to touch one of her wings.

"... true." She wouldn't give up her flying for the world, but now that Nell mentioned it, she hadn't been doing much else for getting around, and climbing trees wasn't a 24 hour thing. This would be interesting to explore.

Looking between Amity and the spread of equipment around the room, Ronan tried to piece together how different things might be used. It wasn't just the fact that Amity could fly, but that her floating left her both without legs and unbound by gravity. He hoped the frei wouldn't mind the next suggestion too much.

"Do you have any sort of weights she could carry or wear? Since her floating cancels out most resistance that her body weight would give this close to the ground."

Once again the frei gained a thoughtful expression at how different her locomotion was compared everyone else, and she bobbed up and down a few times experimentally.

She glanced between Amity and the impromptu course a few times with a look of consideration, a foot tapping absently as she thought.

"Hmm? Oh! Yes, actually!" A few more moments of rifling through the equipment closet produced a pair of bands that she held out to Amity with a smile. "These are actually ankle weights, but they make wrist weights too, I just...don't know where they got put away to," she admitted with a small laugh. "But they're easy enough to find at anywhere that sells exercise equipment if you wanted to pick up a pair for yourself to use at home,"

But that alone, in her mind wouldn't be quite enough. There was a quiet 'hmm' from her as she considered the supplies at hand. Some way to move that would provide a decent workout while making her move in ways that she usually wouldn't.... Well, that could wait for a bit, at least.

"Did you want to help me set up something for now? We can set it up and see how it goes for now, and I can tweak it for next time if there's something not working."

Amity took the weights with a small "Thank You," fumbling with trying to put them on until Ronan reached over to help out. Once they were securely fastened Ronan turned back towards Nell, the frei getting use to the weight with a few punching motions.

"I'd be glad to help out," Ronan said, looking through the stack of different exercise equipment. "What would you like me to grab first?" He wasn't quite sure what would challenge the frei, but he had a feeling it would need to be something that involved either crawling or climbing to get around her mobility advantage. "Do you think a tunnel might work?"

Her foot continued to tap absently as she thought some more, nose wrinkling slightly as she discarded idea after idea. "A tunnel would be great! Lets start with some of these foam blocks first so no one will get hurt if gravity happens," she said, grabbing a few of them from a stack inside the closet. "But next time I might be able to rig up something up to the ceiling so you can really get some climbing done!"

That, though, would have to wait until next time, she reminded herself. For now she had to focus on the more limited materials available on hand. "Now this'll probably go for most of the stuff we're doing for now, but you should try and use your arms for as much of this as you can, not just your wings, okay?" she said in the direction of Amity as she began to stack the blocks in a vaguely stair like fashion, leaving an open space underneath for crawling. "Gotta build up those arm muscles so you can climb anything you want."

“Not getting hurt is good,” Ronan said, gathering up a few more of the foam blocks and coming over next to Nel to help construct the tunnel. At first things were leaning rather precariously, but eventually he got enough of the blocks up to be self supporting and leave a small tunnel underneath. Not so small as to be cramped, but small enough that Amity couldn’t just float underneath it. Good.

Amity listened as Nel continued to explain what she should do in the work out, giving a strong nod after each statement. "Work on my arms, got it!" The mention of being able to climb anything she wanted brought a particularly strong grin to her face. "Then I'll able to climb and punch bad guys!"

Ronan blinked, pausing in his construction. "... punch bad guys?"

"Yeah, like Batman!"

... maybe it was time to have a conversation about separating fiction from reality.

Nell wasn't going to bring up the fact that she didn't have much else to work on at the moment when she saw how enthusiastic she was about it all. The rest of could wait until later until the rest of her body grew in though. For now there was a challenge in front of them. The last few blocks were set in place, and she took a few steps back to look at the resulting pile with a critical nod.

"That'll do for now!" She was about to continue to give Amity instructions on how to climb all over this tower, but then the raevan's last comment finally sunk in.

"Punching bad guys, huh? Well, if you want to learn how to do that we fan work on that later, yeah?" She gave Amity a conspiratorial wink before gesturing over to the impromptu climbing station. "Shall we get started?"
