Captain Richterite was up to his usual tricks; avoiding fights by keeping his energy draining mostly under the radar under the guise of being a street performer. It was easy to keep things low-key that way and he never took too much. A little here and there was just enough to make people tired. It helped him meet his quota and made him look a little better, he hoped.

He had just finished up a 'performance' to a small round of tired applause, taking a moment to gather the small crystals he'd stashed around the area for siphoning purposes so that he could move on. He had a feeling that if he lingered much longer he'd be caught. He usually was and his luck was likely due to run out at any moment. At least the small crowd had started to disperse and if he continued to move quickly enough he'd be gone without raising anyone other attention.

Carson typically gave crowds a wide berth - he had his claustrophobia mostly under control these days, but that didn't mean he went looking for triggers. Seeing the throng of people gathered on the pedestrian plaza, he turned, intending to go around them--

and yawned, as a sudden wave of sleepiness crashed over him.

Which was weird, considering he'd had about three cups of coffee for the road. Carson looked around, trying to size up the situation. The crowd on the plaza was dissipating - he could gather from their chatter that there'd been some sort of magic show. But that didn't explain the tiredness.

He scanned the crowd, looking for the magician, but couldn't confidently pick him out. Negaverse uniforms could look frustratingly like street clothes sometimes, he thought, and there were a lot of people here.

Luckily, he had access to spidey senses. Carson retreated into the nearest alley, shoved his tupperware full of leftovers into a mailbox for safe keeping, and powered up. Triumphalis did a quick scan.

"Gotcha," he said. The signature was an order of magnitude stronger than him. Triumphalis hopped up onto a fire escape for a better view and surveyed the crowd again, now that he had a better idea of where the suspect was.

White hair. Two o'clock.

He couldn't just charge in right now. Too much risk for civilian casualties. Either the crowd needed to thin - and fast - or he'd need to get the target somewhere more isolated.

He yawned again, but tried to push through it. What the ******** was that?

Richterite plucked the last of the energy crystals from where he had stashed it, tossing it up into the air with a smug look on his face before vanishing it into his very own Nega pocket for safe keeping. He'd head back to the Rift later and drop them off somewhere else, hopefully without drawing too much attention to himself so he wouldn't have to answer for his lack of presence.

"And now for my last trick..." He murmured beneath his breath before taking advantage of the dispersing crowd in order to teleport himself from the ground level up to the roof top. He still hadn't quite mastered the act in a way that didn't leave him wobbly, swaying on his feet as he landed just above where he could now feel an energy signature beneath him. How had he missed that...

"Damnit." He muttered, closing his eyes for a moment and sighing while holding his position. He knew he couldn't risk teleporting further without recovering a bit, so he'd just wait and see who it was. Maybe he'd be able to talk himself out of a fight. "Hello! Did you enjoy the show?" He called out into the evening, waiting to see if he would receive a response.

Target on the move, thought Triumphalis, watching the captain with interest. He had some kind of... well, he couldn't really make it out from here. Some kind of something.

And then he disappeared.

And then he reappeared.

Triumphalis looked down. To his great fortune (or misfortune, seeing as he was a rank down on this guy), the captain had reappeared in the alley below him. "Can't say I caught all of it," he called down. "Must have been boring, though. Your crowd seemed lulled to sleep."

He curled his fingers apprehensively, tipstave appearing in his hand. It was a bad idea to trash talk anyone if you weren't also prepared to break their teeth.

Richterite turned and bowed with a bit of a flourish before lifting his gaze to try and see what he was up against, looking in the direction the voice was coming from. "What can I say? Some nights you can charm the audience, and other nights? Nothing. What about you? Are you a fan of card tricks?"

As the Captain asked his questions he straightened himself out, summing a set of cards to his hand. The metal throwing cards clinked together as he shuffled them carefully, mindful of the sharp edges. "I might have a trick or two left up my sleeve for you, whatever you are. Whoever you are as well."

Triumphalis was willing to bet that the audience was a little more than just bored with this jackass's performance, although he was hardly an expert on the finer points of energy gathering. That had looked more like mass hypnosis or something - although he wasn't sure how he'd been affected, when he'd hardly glanced at the charlatan.

The details probably weren't important, Triumphalis decided. He needed to focus, shake off the remaining drowsiness and get ready to fight. The captain had produced something - cards? They sounded heavy and metallic. Triumphalis couldn't be sure, but he was willing to bet the edges were razor sharp.

And him, with a silly club that didn't extend his reach at all! It was almost like he'd brought a stick to a knife fight.

"Triumphalis," he said, jumping down from the fire escape. "Page of Chronos."

If - if he could keep himself close enough, the captain wouldn't be able to get a good spin on the throwing cards. And maybe he could get a good hit in and-

-and get the ******** out of here. Yeah. He was going to aim for that.

Triumphalis gripped his baton tightly. "You know," he said, "This talking before fights thing is really weird. Can we just skip ahead to the beating the s**t out of each other part?"

"Sure you wouldn't rather skip out on the fighting and stick with the talking?" His brow lofted slightly as he stepped back in an attempt to put that distance back between them. His aim had gotten a bit better over the years and the bladed cards were much more useful than the thin cardboard he had started out with. He could defend himself and keep a senshi on the defensive, but the page seemed to move with a purpose. It was like he knew what he was doing, or he was at least good at bluffing.

"I suppose not." He sighed, talking more to himself that that point than to the other man. "Bet you're not the type to go easy on a guy either. That's alright. Neither am I!" He sprang back, skidding on his feet as he landed before tossing two cards in rapid succession at the other man. He aimed for his feet, more like he was playing than actually attempting to do any sort of real harm despite his words. It wouldn't hurt to warm up first, right?

Triumphalis leapt backwards, the cards clattering against the pavement where he'd stood only seconds ago. "Not wasting any time," he observed with a tight-lipped smirk. Maybe he'd bit off more than he could chew, but... he'd worry about that later. Right now, he was confident that he could totally Take This a*****e In A Fight.

He gripped the tipstaff like a blackjack and rushed forward, weapon raised. He just needed to close the distance, he thought through gritted teeth. Close the distance and those cards would be useless.

It was a nice thought, even if it wasn't true.

Triumphalis swung, aiming squarely for the captain's jaw.

Richterite had two more cards that he could throw; two more cards to toss before he had to either summon them all back to his hand, wasting more energy, or try to gather them without being pummeled. The odds weren't looking all that good on trying to gather them. His opponent moved quickly and... <********/> His thoughts hadn't been processing nearly as fast as the other man had been moving and the swing hit its mark, sending Richterite swinging back into the alley wall. He shook it off, cursing as he sent another card firing off in the Page's direction. "You sure as hell pack a hit, Triumphalis, Page of Chronos," he groaned.

This time, Triumphalis didn't move quite fast enough - Richterite's compliment had him briefly distracted, debating a smartass retort. The blade sliced across his right bicep, blood blooming quickly on his crisp white sleeve. "Aw - ********," he swore, all wit and witticism flushed out by the sting of a fresh cut.

His father did always say it was his mouth that was going to get him killed one day, so there was that to consider.

"You're pretty sharp yourself," he shot back, finally, feeling pleased with the reply. "So I guess we're doing this?"

He swapped the tipstaff to his left hand, feeling a little less confident with how well he could swing with his non-dominant side but still pretty okay. His opponent was just throwing his weapons away, right?

He swung again, grunting low in his ******** class="quote">

He groaned at the other man's retort as he rubbed at his jaw and likely would have stood there through another hit if hadn't caught on at the last minute. Richterite stumbled out of the way, boots scraping against the pavement as he just narrowly avoided the hit this time.

The stumble turned into a tumble as he lost his balance, bracing himself for a roll against the asphalt as he shot his last card in the direction he thought he'd be most likely to hit Triumphalis in. Shot in the dark, but it was his last card before summoning them back and a chance was better than nothing if he could use it as a distraction while pulling himself back to his feet.

The last card whizzed past Carson's other sleeve, creating a gash that mirrored the one he already had. "********," he grunted, tossing the tipstaff back to his dominant hand - with both arms wounded, there was no point to crippling himself further.

"What do you say, cap?" he asked, gritting his teeth against the pain. "We call this one a draw?"

Sailor Thisbe, Senshi of Woe, had discovered that she enjoyed patrolling the silver-haired Captain's only to predictable stomping grounds. It meant that she gained the experience of catching him off-guard and frustrating him, which were both A+ in her books. Tonight it seemed like someone else had beaten her to the punches, which was fine and dandy, except for the odds didn't seem to be quite in the right favor.

Richterite was distracted and she was only too happy to use that distraction to her advantage in order to assist someone who had been fighting the good fight against him. Thisbe dropped down beside the Captain as he was getting up, placing her hand on his shoulder. "Veil of Woe."

He would have been willing to call it a draw, and likely would have just to not risk taking another punch from Triumphalis. He was certain enough that everything would have reverted to being just fine if it hadn't been for the hand on his shoulder and the soft words that followed just as he turned his attention to the senshi.

Then it didn't matter because she wasn't there anymore. He wasn't there anymore. Lysander was and because he saw Lysander he knew it wasn't real, but he couldn't stop himself from reacting as though it was. "No! Get away from him! Leave him alone!" He snapped, closing his eyes tightly as though that would make the vision fade away any faster.

While the Captain was distracted Thisbe turned to the page, eyeing him over quickly. "Are you going to be alright? We don't have much time before my attack wears off, and he's going to be madder than a wet hornet when it does..."

Silverah
Attack #1 - Veil of Woe! - Woe lands a successful touch attack after removing one of her gloves, lowering her hood to gaze at her opponent.

  • Effects: For a brief moment Woe's opponent (singular) views her as someone close to them in grievous distress, be it a situation from one of their memories or the situation they are currently in (about to be attacked). This is meant to be a disorienting attack. It can also work without her hood, but the effect always seems more powerful when they don't see her face first.
  • Duration: Instantaneous; wearing off after one post.
  • Avoidable: If her touch is avoided, yes. If her touch lands, no.
  • Downside: Woe must get close to her enemy to use this attack, leaving herself wide open to being hurt if she can't move quickly enough to daze them.

Triumphalis went wide eyed as, before the Captain could respond, a senshi swooped in and put him under some sort of spell.

"Uh," he said to the senshi. "Yeah. I think I might need - uh - probably not stitches." The cuts didn't seem particularly deep, just long. He could patch them with superglue and be fine, probably.

"Anyway, yeah, let's get out of here," he concluded, motioning for the senshi to follow him up to the roofline.

"Name's Triumphalis, by the way," he added, when they were a few blocks away. He looked around to check if he'd left a trail of blood, but they looked like they were in the clear. "Thanks."

She followed his lead easily enough, glad to put distance between the two of them and the Negaverse Captain. He had seemed dazed enough before she had used her ability on him that she doubted he would follow, hoping they had put enough distance between them that he couldn't easily teleport if he did.

"Thisbe." She flashed him a smile before glancing down at the rooftop as she reached around to untie the bow attached to the back of her corset. The added volume was easily made of more than enough fabric to be useful in staunching some of the blood flow.

"Here," she spoke quickly as she held the sash out to him, "I don't have anything to cut it or tear it, but I am almost positive it will magically reappear when I power up again. You probably need it more than I do right now anyways." Flashing him another grin she glanced back the way they'd come. "That Captain is a tool and he had it coming. I hope you hit him solid. Pleasure to meet you, Triumphalis."
