Ichil had purchased the fabric from the same sort of vendor the average man did. It hadn't been expensive or elaborate by any means, and she had sneaked it home in a sack among other goods from the market. Her wardrobe for going out into the world proper was dwindling. Clothing tore or got excessively dirty on her trips out and there was no way to have them cleaned unless she borrowed someone else's wash bin because surely her parents would have a conniption if they found commoners' garb in with their silks. She could mend her own clothing at times, as she had been taught as a girl being prepared for womanhood and a life of boring domesticity, but sometimes the stitching was just n an unflattering place. She didn't do much with she coin she was give, so why not outfit her wardrobe a little more?
Scarves were the easiest thing to start with, of course, although other bits of folded fabric lay on her bed. She crossed her legs beneath herself and made a long crease in the fabric with a heated iron. She made sure it was as even as she could make it, adjusting here and there, and then began carefully stitching the seam. Her stitches were small and symmetrical, likely just due to all of the practice she'd had. Nobody in the court would make her something like this, and so she always crafted her less elaborate clothing herself. This one would have an embroidered pattern, she decided. It was to be a party scarf. Sometimes her hair was too much of a giveaway while she was still in town and so she always kept it covered. She stitched the entire outer seam of the scarf, tied it off and stopped. Hmm, now should she embellish the seam or the greater fabric itself? She sat with the needle between her lips and slumped in a rather unladylike fashion. Just the seam, she decided. It was pretty enough.
