Elysia hummed lighting to herself as she made her way through her forest home. A light trot in her step, and a peaceful smile on her face. Honovi had gone off with the others for the day, gathering the much needed food and trinkets they needed for their home. No doubt that the wolf had taken their daughters with him, Takkun, and Oberon. It was high time that they learn to forage and gather for themselves. That being said, it was also high time their son, Ramiel, have his flying lesson. Audra had already had hers. Ashni did not have to since she already had the natural talent like her mother. Well, Elysia would always say that Oberon had the natural talent of flight, and Oberon would always kindly disagree. Takkun would just shake his head and stay out of it and Honovi, well, Honovi would always get caught in the middle.

The thought brought a small chuckle through Elysia’s mouth as she scanned their clearing for her only son. Ramiel had to be around her somewhere close by. He never went very far. Although Elysia had to wonder if Ramiel was being his adorable little self and trying to find his sisters. He was always the protective one. She had to muse that he came by it honestly through Honovi. Having three fathers certainly had its benefits. Ramiel could learn the best of all worlds. And quite frankly, Elysia loved every minute of her tiny non-traditional family. Sure, some couldn’t understand the concept, but Elysia didn’t really pay much mind to them. She firmly believed that it took a village to raise the children, and if everyone loved those children just as much as she did that’s all that really mattered.

It didn’t take long for her eyes to land on her equally jolty son. He was actually quite easy to spot since he inherited the majority of her looks. Wings and all. And she also noticed that he had taken to playing hide and seek with a local ground hog. Not to be deterred, Elysia opted to wait a few moments before disturbing his game. She was rather content to watch him and watch the game play out between the two. Given by his furrowed brow and hunched form, he was losing. Elysia had to wonder if the groundhog was getting a good laugh under the ground.

Fondly she remembered her own childhood. Granted, hers was a tad different since both of her parents were from the skies like herself. Gifted with wings and abilities that then passed on to her. She knew that her breed was considered different than the others. Some regarding her as a god, which she certainly was not, and others regarding her with fear, which made her quite sad. Luckily Ramiel would not have the same fate as her given his mixed blood. In some ways Elysia felt that was much preferred over the other. Ramiel and his sisters wouldn’t know the hurt of being either put on a pedestal or pushed away in misunderstanding.

“My child, I’m sure your groundhog friend would like a break from your little game,” she finally spoke as Ramiel failed at pouncing on his target, “it’s time for your lesson in flying.”

Ramiel, for all his jolty glory, was anything but jolty this breezy morning. The colt was certainly feeling energetic, but spirits be damned he could not for the life of him catch this stupid groundhog. It had started off simply and efficiently enough. He saw the groundhog. The groundhog saw him. Said groundhog took off towards his hole in the ground. And Ramiel ran after the small creature in order to catch it. What was ironic was that this wasn’t the first time he and this groundhog had gotten into one of these chase fests. In fact, this had become a daily thing as far back as Ramiel could remember in his short life. He had made the decision the first day he had broken out of his basket, and laid eyes on his two sisters, that he was going to protect them at any cost. And speed and agility where at the top of the list of things he needed to keep in shape.

If he didn’t have speed and agility, then what? Fly? Ramiel couldn’t help but laugh at that thought. Ramiel didn’t need the ability to fly in order to protect his siblings. Flying was the cop out reason to catch another living creature. What if he didn’t have his wings? What then would he do? Boom! There was the catch twenty two. His sisters would look at him like he was crazy, but that was okay. They didn’t have to understand. Ramiel was the protector. He would protect them dang it!

And so, just as he pounced he heard his mother’s voice behind him. Which, unfortunately, and the effect of his groundhog friend getting away from him and leaving for the rest of the day. Grumpy at that Ramiel turned to his mother with his utterly dejected and grumpy face. He was clearly perturbed that she would interrupt the more important daily game of cat and mouse. And then she had to go and mention that today of all days was his flying lesson. Ramiel had to groan despite himself.

“Aww mom! I told you I don’t need flying!”

His mother then gave him that look, you know, the one that clearly screamed you’re not getting out of this, and Ramiel couldn’t help but groan again. Why was his mom so stubborn? Was this was Papa Honovi let her get away with everything she wanted? He danced around a few steps and pulled his wings tightly to his sides. Maybe if his wings weren’t as noticeable maybe they’d go away and she’d forget the whole thing…Yeah, that was the way to do it! Such was the illogical logic of a young colt. He couldn’t get away with anything. At least, not yet. Once he was grown, however, that would definitely change.

The mare couldn’t help but look down at her son in amusement. Clearly he wasn’t in the mood for her lessons today. He was too focused on learning the ground way of doing things. It reminded her once again of who she was as a child. He was so fully of electric energy. It was so adorable! But alas, Elysia too was on a mission. And that mission was to teach her son the art of flying whether he liked it or not! He may be a stubborn boy, but she was just as stubborn. She would just have to sway him using his own logic against him. Maybe it seemed just a tad diabolic. But Elysia knew she only had the best intentions for her son.

“Now Ramiel,” she said with a small conspiratorial smile, “don’t you want to have all possible avenues of movement in order to protect your sisters?”

She watched as his eyes scanned her suspiciously and she continued as if she didn’t notice anything at all.

“Sure you can run around and protect them, but what if your opponent is on the other, opposite side of you? What if it’d be too late to help your sisters if you ran around them to get to your target? What would you do then if you didn’t know how to fly?”

It was like clockwork. She watched her son as he narrowed his eyes in thought, clearly her words sinking into his mind and turning the wheels in his head. She knew she had him then. He couldn’t deny that she had a clear point of interest. Sure, Honovi and the other boys would probably give her THAT look for using her daughters to get her son to obey. But hey, she had to get her son flying somehow. And besides, he was of her bloodline! She was an angeni of lightning, a descendant of the lightning gods! Therefore, by extension, Ramiel was too. It would be outrageous for him to not streak the sky with his electrified wings. He would understand soon enough the beauty of flying up in the clouds.

“Now what do you say Ramiel, my child. Will you listen to your poor mother for a few hours and stretch your jolty wings with me? I promise it’ll be fun. And you may start to enjoy the wind in your hair and wings as much as I do. Truly you don’t know what you’re missing.”

Elysia heard him groan in both annoyance and acceptance at her words. He was accepting the fact that he knew his mom was right and he had no choice. And despite herself, she grinned down at him in amusement once more.

“Come now, don’t give me that. You know you love me dearly.”
