(( In the past ))

It had seemed like ages had passed since Psyche had found the Blood Moon Carnival. Perhaps she would have seen it as odd that they had seemed eager to offer her safety and a place that she could call home. At the time her mind was consumed with the need to reconnect with her brother. This place had been the last known location of her older brother. By the time she realized that Relic was no longer with the carnival the troupe had moved on and she had no choice but to follow. The mark on her chest burned fiercely if she even harbored the thought of sneaking away. For the first few weeks Psyche had been trapped in a never ending circle of misery. After that the mare realized that it was fruitless to keep thinking of escape. There was a chance that in the future the carnival would drop their guard around its members. Perhaps then she would find the means to escape.

~*Present day*~

The moon was nonexistent tonight. Psyche slipped into the shadows of a carnival booth and glanced upwards to the sky above her. Without the moonlight to guide her she would have to watch where she placed her hooves; less she trip over an obstacle in her way. As such the new moon brought the mare both a blessing and a curse. Without the moonlight her pale coat did not appear as bright, as luminous as it would under a full moon. The lack of light though led to her watching the ground instead of her surroundings.

Psyche tested the bandage around her leg by pulling on the end with her mouth. The bandages were purely aesthetic as she was not injured. They did help to conceal the weapon that she had stolen from the carnival. A small knife was held by elastic shirring around her leg and she wished to hide the fact that she was carrying such a blade. The black shroud she had haphazardly thrown over her neck also helped to mute the luminous glow of her flank. Her keen eyes picked out her chosen route out of the carnival proper. Tonight was the night to leave. Psyche had realized that the brand on her chest had not burned the entire time she had been planning this midnight escape and took it as a favorable sign that she would leave the carnival without any consequences. Her body quickly broke into a gallop as she passed the outer boundaries of the carnival.

There was a feeling inside that was compelling her to leave. She could not quite explain the sensation nor could she stop to examine it. Not quite yet at least. After a few hours of a brisk pace Psyche paused. The mare assumed she had put enough distance between herself and the members of the carnival. It was then that she stopped to catch her breath. Her gaze lifted to the skies above her and although there was no moon the stars were brightly shining above. One in particular caught her eye and Psyche stared at it, captivated. The feeling inside flared and the mare sighed. Was it this star that was compelling her?

Present Day

There was enough, stable, light that Psyche could use to pick a pathway through the river that seemed to have been inconveniently placed in her way. Sighing with something that was more than frustration the mare paced back and forth along the river's shoreline. Just because she could see a path across the waters it did not mean that she was foolish enough to try. The mare had been wandering for the last couple of weeks in a never ending path of zigs and zags. She only hoped that she was not being tracked. It was for some strange reason that the Blood Moon Carnival loathed to lose any members.

She had heard the tales of past "exhibits" escaping and never being found. Psyche knew that Relic had been allowed to leave voluntarily. She only hoped that no one would come looking for her.

She had wasted too much time lost in memories of the past. Psyche ground her teeth together sharply as she once again found her gaze drifting to the other side of the river. Sadly she did not believe there was another option open to her than to cross the body of water. If by chance she was being followed than the water would help to block her scent once in the water.

Bracing herself against the cold Psyche placed her front hooves into the water and began to slowly make her way across the river.

The water was freezing. Shivers wracked her frame as she struggled to place one hoof in front of the other. There was nothing to prove that pursuit was imminent but Psyche acted like it was. She found herself pausing exactly in the middle of the river. The moon had disappeared behind a dark cloud and the mare grimaced. Such an omen did not bode well.

She needed to hurry.
