x After the privatization of spaceflight in Earth's early 21st century, fierce commercial competition resulted in a rapid explosion of the technology. Rocket engines gave way to electric ones, disposable spacecraft gave way to reusable ones, and economies of scale made tours of Luna and Mars available to the masses. Martian colonies had always been one of humanity's dreams, and it wasn't long before these day tours became permanent landings, fueled by advances in construction techniques and material sciences. Domed colonies were slowly established throughout Sol: first on Luna, then on Mars, then on the Saturnian and Jovian moons. New space stations were erected at an astounding pace to support new trade routes between them, and by the turn of the 22nd, humanity had conquered their solar system and were on the fast track toward a new golden age.
But still, it was not enough. We looked to the other stars in longing, wondering whether one day we would be able to visit those distant, twinkling lights. By the 2150s, we had gotten our answer. A newly build research vessel, equipped with instruments never before imagined, detected a strange anomaly at the Earth—Luna LaGrange point. Further study revealed a point in space where the quantum substrate was weaker than in the rest of the system, or as the scientists who examined it explained to the laymen, "the edge a fault line in space itself." Once probed, the fault seemed to open up and go on for light years, and it exhibited peculiar properties; it was posited that with the correct type of motivator, they could open it up into an artificial wormhole through which a ship could travel. Excited by the potential for rapid transit between distant systems, research on the subspace drive began in earnest. The SU CV Prometheus was the first vessel to be fitted with this experimental drive; it made the jump at Earth—Luna, and landed in Alpha Centauri mere hours later, to much fanfare and Champagne.
The current year is 2327, and humanity has come a long way. We now claim multiple systems and colonies all over the local cluster, and our ships of the line are a sight to behold. Terraforming technologies have even made it possible to establish open-air cities on garden worlds of our own design, and the old Sol Union has given way to a galactic Federation of all Terran systems, united in peace and prosperity. Or so we had hoped ... but not all is well in the heavens.
Nineteen years ago, humanity finally learned that they are not alone in the universe. Contact was made with another spacefaring race in the systems of Beta Aquilae, Iota Pegasi, and Alderamin. They called themselves something indecipherable, so we named them "Sákhaya," after an old Earth word for "friend" and everything that we hoped they would be. Overjoyed with this revelation, we attempted to welcome them into our community with open arms. The Sákhaya, on the other hand, were less than pleased. They were distrustful of the Terran first contact team and, unable to understand our language, eventually retreated in frustration. But humans do not give up, and in their arrogance, began making incursions into Sákhayan space in order to force further contact; it came as no surprise to anyone when alien warships finally appeared upon our doorstep. (Though to credit their discipline, they held their fire. They had come as a warning.) But in that time, we had completed the task we had set upon: we had translated their language. A proper delegation was dispatched to what appeared to the be the alien flagship, with the intent of making amends and opening a formal dialogue between us. This attempt was thoroughly bungled by the delegation, and we have been at war with the Sákhaya ever since. The name now stands as a cruel reminder of the price of hubris.
Things have ... not been going well for us. Although we have fought the Sákhaya to a stalemate, they early on made inroads into unclaimed systems on our borders and pushed the front lines of the war as far down as Algiedi and Iota Persei. It became clear that we would need a new weapon in order to win this war, and to our great fortune, our prayers were answered. In a the recently colonized Tauri system, Federal Terran Intelligence discovered an ancient alien artifact buried beneath the ice of a frozen moon. They quickly realized that this could be the answer we seek, but as the artifact was heavily damaged during extraction from its icy grave, there is now a pressing need to replace it. But as the logic goes: where there is one, there are likely to be many. An expedition into the poorly charted neighboring systems has been hastily assembled – led by the FT FG Vienna and FT SC Faraday – in the hopes that there, they will discover what we need.
This is the story of that expeditionary task force.
They have no idea what they are in for.→ OPENING POST ◾ THE STORY ◾ RULES OF THE GAME ◾ MEET THE TASKFORCE ◾ PROFILE LAYOUTS ◾ EXTRA INFO ◾ WHERE WE ARE NOW ←

x General:
◾ This RP will be somewhere around "lazy lit" to "lit" because I don't really know what those mean anymore. ◾ After submitting a reserve or getting your profile approved, you have either one or two days to submit the profile or make your first post, respectively. ◾ One week of inactivity without notice will result in your character being killed off, but only if someone else expresses interest in playing that role. ◾ If you have any questions about the RP, make them known! I'll use your questions to add information to the "Extra Info" post. ◾ Use the OoC thread! We will need to discuss the plot / RP in general, and if you don't participate, you don't get a say in what happens.
Characters:
◾ You can have as many characters as you can play, but they cannot all have the same roles. ◾ Real photographs will not be considered for profiles. You may use illustrations or a written description. ◾ I am totally okay with minor god-modding against NPCs during combat. We are elite pilots, and we can do some crazy things. ◾ PM all profiles to me with the subject line just being the title of the RP.
Formats:
◾ The use of a posting format will be left up to the player, because in this RP, they are not required. ◾ If you use one, the minimum size of a post on Gaia is 970px. Please ensure that your layout fits into a post as small as this.* ◾ You already know the drill about overly large / small font sizes and bright colors. ◾ If your layout uses extensive "coding" please make it into an image. Because while I can assume that my 1280x800 screen will be the smallest we have, I will feel like an a** if someone comes along with an even smaller one. → OPENING POST ◾ THE STORY ◾ RULES OF THE GAME ◾ MEET THE TASKFORCE ◾ PROFILE LAYOUTS ◾ EXTRA INFO ◾ WHERE WE ARE NOW ←

x Open positions on the FT FG Vienna:
◾ Chief Engineering Officer ◾ Chief Security Officer ◾ Fighter Pilots ◾ If you can think of it, you can have it.
Open positions on the FT SC Faraday:
◾ Captain ◾ Navigator ◾ Scientists ◾ If you can think of it, you can have it.
Not all of these positions need to be filled, and many of them probably shouldn't be. This RP will primarily be focused on space combat and have a scale larger than just the one ship – so if you choose something like a general crew position, you may get bored fairly quickly. That said, I will do my best to find things to do for every type of character.Format for Characters Name:Sex:Date of Birth: Current year is 2327. Place of Birth: What system / planet were they born in / on? Refer to the map in the "Extra Info" post. Rank: Navy and Intel folk use Navy ranks, pilots use Air Force ranks. Go here and use the table on the right. Enlisted With: See below on how to construct this. Assigned Ship:Assigned Squadron: Name of; only for pilots. Role:Service History: Basically the character's backstory. How they ended up on the expedition. Psych Profile: Very short blurb highlighting some of the character's personality traits. File Photo: Illustrations or descriptions. No real photos. Attach as link. Played By: The "Enlisted With" section denotes the branch or agency to which the character belongs, and will normally be the same as the affiliation of the ship to which they are assigned. However, in this RP you can mix and match affiliations, such that you could have a civilian assigned to a Navy ship. This is due to the dire circumstances in which the characters find themselves, and so is only applicable to characters who join the RP while it is already in progress. Those who join at the outset must have their character and ship affiliations be in agreement. Fighter pilots will additionally append ", Fighter Corps" to their affiliation.Format for Ships Affiliation: Intelligence, Navy, Independent, etc. Name:Class: Freighter, Corvette, Frigate, etc., and name of class. CO: The name of the ship's captain. Armor: How heavy? Primaries: What kind of guns does this ship have? Secondaries: Any missiles? Thrust & Agility: How well do the engines perform? (The following are yes-or-no questions.) Armor Auto-Repair System:Combat Spacecraft Hangar:Intersystem Subspace Drive:Linear Displacement Array: See note 1. Sheath Shielding System:PUT ONE UNIQUE SHIP FEATURE HERE If you wish to submit your own ship, it would be highly preferred if you could provide it as a 3D model or an isometric photorealistic image. The ship cards in the "Meet the Taskforce" post all have relatively the same lighting and positioning and I would like to try keeping them that way. I'm also not super keen on ships from big, well-known universes, e.g.: Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, etc. You can most definitely submit a ship design from wherever, I just want you to be aware that I may reject it. If you want a list of ships that I will instantly accept, you can pick any Terran utility ship or combat vessel smaller than a destroyer from either of these two lists.
If your ship has more than the listed yes-or-no features and you wish to add one, just add it to the profile when you send it in, and it will retroactively be applied to the rest of the ship profiles. This is only valid for general features that many ships are likely to have.
1: An LDA (linear displacement array) is a type of weak shield that was used before sheath shielding was invented. They are small, use very little energy, and recharge within seconds, but they can only protect against one threat at a time. They're commonly employed on fighters and smaller craft with tight energy limitations preventing the use of sheath shields, but which have enough agility to simply avoid being hit. Larger ships are also still equipped with LDAs, where they are used to absorb hits before the heavier shield does.→ OPENING POST ◾ THE STORY ◾ RULES OF THE GAME ◾ MEET THE TASKFORCE ◾ PROFILE LAYOUTS ◾ EXTRA INFO ◾ WHERE WE ARE NOW ←

x Map of the Local Cluster:
This is the map of all currently visited or known systems and the jump lanes that connect them together. All races are dependent on jump lanes to travel interstellar distances. Solid lanes are stable lanes: they have no transit constraints, supporting any ship type in any number, and will remain stable for centuries or even millennia. Dashed lanes are unstable. Sending though a ship or fleet that is too large for it, or destroying a ship inside of it, may cause the lane to destabilize and disappear. FTI is currently working on a device that will stabilize these lanes and make them safe for transit, but they have not yet fielded any.
Terran systems on this map are generally the ones located in the lower half and in the clusters around Pollux and Muphrid, though many along the fringes are only lightly populated and poorly explored. Sákhayan systems are located along the upper rim of the map; since we have yet to discover all of their systems, and they are certainly not on good enough terms to share that information with us, most of their empire does not appear here.
Subspace Drives:
In order to rapidly travel large distances through space, ships can be equipped with a subspace drive. These come in a variety of sizes to fit a variety of ship types, and expose different capabilities depending upon the vessel they are installed into. These capabilities are factors of the ship's reactor output and the subspace drive's physical size, and determine the drive's cool-down time and maximum range. Small drives, such as those installed on fighters, recharge for additional jumps much faster than capital-class drives, but their reactors cannot power intersystem jumps – these can only be performed by corvette sized and larger vessels. Even so, capital ships can only make intersystem jumps by activating their subspace drives at jump nodes. Jump nodes (usually located around LaGrange points) are naturally occurring phenomena that mark the endpoints of "fault lines" in space; these comparatively negate the energy requirement of making the jump as opposed to attempting it from open space. Intersystem jumps increase the cool-down time of the drive, potentially to as long as fifteen minutes.
The Academy:
In order to join the Navy, prospective members must first apply to the Naval Academy. Applicants must be the age of majority (18) in order to be considered. The length of training varies depending upon the career path of the applicant. The basic requirements are six months of basic training, twelve months at staff college, and six months of technical training in their chosen specialization. Flight school, for aspiring fighter pilots, takes an additional two years.
The Quest for a Truly Human AI:
One of the most basic staples of science fiction has always been artificial intelligence, in specific, one with a truly human intelligence. In reality, this fantasy never came to pass. Not only was the concept declared to be an ethical quagmire, it was seen as a wholly unnecessary and indeed, even undesirable, end evolution. A human mind is inconsistent and unpredictable, neither of which are traits that we desire from our machines. And so, while it may perhaps be an interesting laboratory experiment, a "true" AI would die long before it ever reached any level of mass production. Advances in the field of artificial intelligence have been wholly utilitarian, and our modern computers are more than smart enough for our requirements. → OPENING POST ◾ THE STORY ◾ RULES OF THE GAME ◾ MEET THE TASKFORCE ◾ PROFILE LAYOUTS ◾ EXTRA INFO ◾ WHERE WE ARE NOW ←

x The Vienna and the Faraday have entered the Tauri—Fornacis jump corridor. The Serenity must have jumped a few moments later, because she can't be seen on the optics. The jump will take a little bit under twelve hours to complete, during which time the crews can meet and get acquainted with the new arrivals, or get some much needed sleep (for those who have already been at their stations for several hours). It should be nice and uneventful.
In the Tauri system, at the edge of the Tauri—Fornacis jump node, the installation Altima is under construction. Altima is intended to become a lightly armed and armored trading post, servicing the miners who ply the asteroid-rich Fornacis system. The FT DD Vladivostok is currently stationed at Altima, and will be for some time, to oversee and defend the hulk and its workers. The FT FG Vienna and FT SC Faraday have joined the Vladivostok while they await the rest of their crews, at which point they will make the jump into Fornacis. With any luck, they will find some useful artifacts, or perhaps an undiscovered jump node that will lead them to more interesting places.→ OPENING POST ◾ THE STORY ◾ RULES OF THE GAME ◾ MEET THE TASKFORCE ◾ PROFILE LAYOUTS ◾ EXTRA INFO ◾ WHERE WE ARE NOW ←

 FEDERAL TERRAN INTELLIGENCE
████████████████ TAMARA ALAJLANI << _
Things were fairly quiet in the Tauri system, on the new frontier of the Terran Federation. Even being as close to the front lines as they were, the neighboring systems of Lyncia and Tabit had barely seen any fighting, and the links out of the cluster were far too weak to support an enemy battle group coming through them. Captain Alajlani felt cozy and well protected out here, stationed around the Fornacis jump node and the proto-station Altima alongside the DD Vladivostok, and the assignment could almost be likened to taking a vacation. She'd only been out here for one week so far, but already felt so much better than she had over the entire past year. Granted, she was spending most of her free time playing card games with the destroyer's crew....
As of right now, her official orders were simply: Wait. Her frigate, the Vienna, had recently been assigned to an expeditionary force with the research ship SC Faraday, which had just recently completed a sensor refit in spacedock at Procyon. It was slated to arrive in Tauri later on in the day, accompanied by the Vienna's two new fighter squadrons: the 88th Moebius Interceptor Squadron, and the 216th Scorched Stars Assault Squadron. Together, they were being sent into Fornacis, on the hunt for some shiny new alien toys for Federal Intelligence to play with; whatever it was that they'd discovered on Tauri VII-B had really gotten them worked up over these artifacts.
Of course, this was all strictly classified at the highest levels. Only the people directly involved with the project even knew of its existence; Tamara herself knew only that there was some kind of artifact, and that much she'd only been told about because she was on the task force responsible for finding more of them. She didn't know what it looked like, and certainly not what it was supposed to do ... she'd never even been permitted to visit the Jötunheimr base where they were apparently keeping the thing, and it was located less than ten AU from her current position. Intel was apparently so desperate to keep their find a secret, that they slammed an asteroid into the moon they had found it in, then mined the debris field with half of the Cerberus sentry guns ever produced. Even their own people were kept away; if you didn't approach the base along a very specific vector, flashing a very specific single-use identification code, you'd be blown out of the sky before you got within two thousand klicks. So, no. She had never thought about trying to sneak a peek.
Anyway, speculation was all fun and good, but it really boiled down to one very simple fact: either they would find something in Fornacis, and be able to make their own inferences from it, or they wouldn't. The Sákhaya alone were already different enough from humanity that it was impossible to fathom what else might be out there. And that was certainly a very exciting prospect, despite how long and boring the overall mission profile sounded. So, yes. She was more than willing to babysit the science cruiser for a month or two, no matter how much she knew she'd be complaining about it later.
But while she waited for the rest of her task force and the official go-ahead for the mission, there were still important matters to attend to. Two heavy freighters had just jumped in on the perimeter of the construction site. One of them turned to move towards the cargo depot near the station, but the other one hailed her.
FT FR Market Forces: This is the freighter Market Forces calling the frigate Vienna. We're carrying the supplies you requisitioned. FT FG Vienna: Good to see you, Market Forces. What do you have for us? FT FR Market Forces: Let's see.... We've the usual. Food, water, fuel. Oh, and a shipment of the new Maxim cannon. Sound right? FT FG Vienna: That sounds very right, captain. Our cargo dock is waiting for you. FT FR Market Forces: Roger that. Coming in.

||Yuri Ashino, The Sák-kicker|| ||Location; Fighter|| ||With; Flightmates|| ||OOC; Whoop, let's get to killing!|| "Keep a steady distance, and let's not embarrass the 216th with any fast moves." Yuri's reminder to his squadron was replied to with laughter over the comms before he switched from a squadron to an open channel for the convoy of two fighter squadrons and one Newton class cruiser. "Still nothing on scanner's, we're in the clear on our side. Any word from the Vienna?" He directed the message to the Faraday's crew mostly, although left it for the 216th squadron to listen in as well. He hadn't even met any of the personnel from either the cruiser or the Scorched Stars. When his squad arrived to the Faraday during its departure after its sensor upgrade, they were immediately put on watch duty. Now, they just drifted on one side of the semilarge vessel as they were on route to their new assigned homeship.

 >>EZAR BLAKE >>LEADER OF THE SCORCHED SQUADRON LOADING⋯ ██████████████████████████████████ "Ughh...So borring.." Ezar would say aloud, though he was the only one that could hear himself. Over his own comms he could hear one of his squadron asking, ' You ever wonder why we are here?', and go on some elaborate deep stuff. Before Ezar could say something to the philosophical pilot, he could hear the comms switch to a open channel from 88th. Ezar would then put his feet on top of the controls, as he was trying to relax in his Fighter. In which he set the controls to autopilot, since there wasn't many actions beside escorting. His hands would slide over to the comms, as he would then speak to 88th and Farday. "No word from Vienna over here 88th. But nothing to worry about probably.." Ezar would say as he let out a yawn over the comms. He would then stretch his arms, as he looked over to his side to see the Farday, and 88th in the distance. "What some dream this is..." He would sarcastically mumble to himself, and put his hands over his head. Ezar would hope for more 'excitement' as that was his sort of thing. Escorting some ship is very much of the opposite of that. One of hands would reach down to the controls, as he switched it to manual, and began to move sway his fighter around a bit out of boredom. Then would proceed to make 'firing noises' from his mouth, as if he was a little boy. Looking at the abyss of stars, and doing nothing else drives a man bored. So far to pretend to shoot stuff in a actual fighter, that people dream to be in. "How long was it again to reach Vienna?" Ezar would ask as he opened up the recent comms again, and was hoping for a 'not too long' answer.

Company: Nobody to see... █ The young woman walked through the hallways of the ship, her hazel eyes staring in amazement at the wonders of the FT SC Faraday, her new home for the time being. She was assigned to work on this ship as the chief engineer, just like her father. He was a great engineer and from what she was told, people on the ship loved him and respected him to some extent, give or take the odd ones out who had no opinion or just hated everybody. She would be just like him, just as great as him! Or at least she hoped that's what her time on the FT SC Faraday would be like. She was a master engineer, and she loved every inch of her messy job, including the dangers that came with working with military units so closely. Once in a while she also enjoyed a good thrill.
She managed to manuever her way through the ship corridors to what seemed like her new work space. The sign on the door had read, "Cheif of Engineering" Which made her smile gleam with pride. This was it, this was hers. She pulled a key card out of her back pocket and scanned it on the door lock system. With a click, the door opened and she stepped inside. Some of her fathers things were still laying around the office/living space. Most of her things had already been moved in and now she just had to unpack.
"Wow, this is all mine." She whispered to herself, looking around the room in amazement. Quote: Hederp. I didn't quite know what to write for an opening post... So, idk. Fellow Faraday mates, feel free to stumble into her office whenever. ▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂▂
