Horace set down his phone and dragged his hands over his face. He picked his phone back up. Then set it back down and scooted it to the far end of the desk. It made his stomach flip flop angrily when he thought about how close he'd gotten. Horace could tell himself he could just hook up, move on, forget... but he'd be lying. And he'd needed Maebe to get him out of this mess. <********." He picked up his phone again and set it back down. He was going to owe Maebe and boy, did that rankle, but he had needed someone to stop him from telling Lawr to come over. Horace pushed his chair back and paced, waiting for the blonde girl.

She'd needed time to pack up the laptop and charger, as well as head down to the cafeteria to pick up some french fries and soda. So Horace had a lot of time to reconsider and angst over his life choices.

When she finally arrived, she already had a fry in her mouth, and was knocking on the door with the toe of her boot. "Open up, my hands are full." She called out. At least he could be certain she wasn't going to hit him in the nuts this time..

"If you kick me, I swear to god I'll deactivate your gift card," he said, voice muffled by the door. He opened it for her and soon as she came in, resumed his sort of jittery pacing. He checked his cellphone again and, finally, shut it in the desk drawer.

Abruptly, he plopped down on his bed and slumped. Then, he said, the words seemingly forced out. "Thanks."

She looked proud of the fact that she was clearly too burdened to do any kicking, but he did not seem to notice or care. So her tiny moment of pride slumped, and she walked in and placed the laptop, fries and soda on the table.

Every move was categorized quietly, without reaction. He was antsy, and checking his phone. More importantly, he'd ask her to come save him, which meant the only thing she was really saving him from was himself.

Maebe ate another fry.

"You're welcome. Although, you shouldn't be thanking me just yet. I'm not doing this for free. You're supposed to teach me how to find my own Dawson, remember? Or did you think I was just here for your bubbly company?"

"My bubbly ********' company, of course." He looked up, finally, registering everything that Maebe had brought. Horace blinked. "How did you carry all that?" Without thought, he reached into his pocket to fish out his cellphone and... oh. Of course. It was in the desk so he couldn't check it.

He patted the bed next to him. Unless she wanted to take his wheelie chair, it was the only option to sit. "Gimme a sec to like... get my bearing or some s**t." He sighed and ran his fingers through messy hair. "Right, Dawson. You saying you want a Dawson or the Dawson?" he said distractedly.

She unloaded the food off of the laptop, and swiveled it around to hold it in one hand. "I used the laptop like a tray. I mean, I probably shouldn't have, this is a complicated thingie of machinery and whatever, but if I gave a s**t about that I probably wouldn't have brought it over, and I did. So."

She threw it on the bed, and started to crawl on it herself. She paused at the question, before sitting upright and shoving him on the arm. "That's not a fair question. You don't hold the answers to winning over this Dawson. Nobody does. I just."

But if she didn't want him to help her with Dawson, what did she really want? To help her forget? No one had managed that feat so far, despite a few attempts.

"I don't know what I was thinking, coming to you for help. Maybe I was just hoping for some kind of miracle." Instead of a miracle, she opened up Taym's laptop, and turned the screen towards him. "Pick a movie quick before I steal your fries and leave."

"I know, I know, not a fair question." He held up his hands, relaxing a little bit. "I'm sadly made of flesh and blood and not miracles. Please feel free to cut into me and find out." His hands still itched for his phone.

Horace stabbed wildly at the screen. He really didn't care what they watched, he just wanted to be distracted. "That one. I love that one." A pause. "I'm not exactly the best person to ask for love advice anyway, Maebe."

She turned the screen to see what he'd picked, which was Bambi, and wondered if he was being sarcastic or not. Nevertheless, she played it, true to her word.

His admittance made one corner of her lips turn up, and she glanced at him out of the corner of her eyes, before putting the laptop on his lap and moving until she was just a little curled up thing wrapped around his side.

"Maybe I knew that." She admitted, with a weak chuckle. "Maybe it's nice to know I'm not the only one ******** up this badly, around here. Or maybe it's just nice to make believe."

She grinned, then - it was a violent thing, a little too frightening to indicate happiness. "I'm excellent at make believe."

Whether he liked Maebe or not... he didn't even know, but the skinship was nice. She made an odd like blond bundle against him, looking strangely fragile. Horace figured she was made of steel, maybe some glass on the inside. Hidden depths. Shattery depths. He shifted a little, loosening up.

He idly moved a lock of hair back on her shoulder from where is was in danger of sliding into her face, fully aware that the gesture might make her lash out. "I ******** up all the damn time, going round in circles, repeating the same mistakes. Maybe cuz I hope it'll turn out different this time." He rolled his eyes at himself.

"Oh really?" He almost smiled back. Her grin was a baring of teeth, perfect. "What's your favorite lie?" The twittering of birds caught his attention and he looked at the laptop. Horace made a face.

"Did I really ******** pick Bambi."

"It won't." She promised him, because she knew.

His touch hardly registered, if only because she was so used to being manhandled in non-sexual ways lately that she'd become desensitized to people just being nice. She looked up at his toothy grin, and gave him a pleasant, almost vacant smile in return. When she spoke, it was as casual as if she was reading out a grocery list.

"That I'm not hurting. That I don't die a little bit, every single day, every single hour, every single minute without him." Her smile flickered with no emotion; her poker face was flawless, like a doll's face painted on. "That I can move on, and maybe I'll find some peace."

She smiled, with a new, awkwardly genuine quality.

"You picked Bambi. You're so gaaaay."

"I can pretend it will," he answered, because he had and he would.

She was so good at...whatever she was, Horace thought. She recited those lies like they were a script, one she wasn't even terribly interested in. It should have been sad, but it wasn't, not really. It was a coping mechanism and he was hard-pressed to find it anything other than admirable. Maebe had obviously had a lot of practice. Horace wondered, for a moment, which him. There was Dawson, of course, but there was Otto lurking in her past like some shadow. Relationships were weird. Ultimately, it didn't matter which 'him', because this was about Maebe and the lies she told herself to get through the day.

"Well done," he said. "I can't say if those will ever become truths, but it's nice to think they might, sometimes." Horace wasn't going to offer her platitudes or 'chin ups' or anything of the sort. It would be hypocritical and lying and he found he didn't want to do that to her.

At the Bambi comment, he groaned. "I'm partly gaaaayy. About half-gay." A pause. "We can change it if you'd like," he said, almost hopefully.

"Change you being gay? Damn, and I thought this wasn't a booty call."

The sarcasm was strong with this one.

"Ah, shut it. I like tits as much as a straight guy, okay. Not my fault there's hotter dudes than girls on this island." He shoved her in the shoulder, pulling a face that said he was displeased.

"You stopped me from a booty call; I ain't about to pick up another."
