Course Description: In Advanced ASL, you will learn how to better communicate using the language. Here, you will learn business terms, educational terms, and how to take steps to make yourself more fluent in the language. There will be field trips in this class and there will only be one week of review this time! Because of the fact that this is an advanced class, you can request to be moved out at any point in time. You will be required to take four standardized tests throughout the year on top of the state issued exams, but they're simply to see how much information you've retained and nothing more. Thank you very much for reading, and I hope to see you in my class soon! 4laugh

Hello, everybody! Welcome to Advanced American Sign Language! My name is Rinji Nakahara and I will be your teacher this year. In this syllabus, we will be covering a few basics of the class. I recommend holding onto this syllabus, as it would prove useful to you throughout the course. Because of the fact that many of you are away from home, you will not be required to turn in any signed papers for me except for the ones that you sign yourselves. For the first week of class, I will need to borrow the voice of a student so that I can better go over review with you, since I am mute. I promise that this will be a volunteer event. I will not take any voices without permission. (And if you intend to be the student to ask me the question that I'm asked every year, yes, I will not take your voices EVEN if you keep chatting with your neighbors when you're not supposed to.)
Once we reach the end of basics training, you'll receive a pocket dictionary and we'll jump right into our lessons. From this point in the class on, you will be required to speak in sign language. We will continue to go throughout our lessons using the basics that I had taught you earlier (I promise that I won't make you go searching through your dictionaries to decipher the lesson. That's just unfair!) and slowly work our way up and through the lesson.
Are you confused, stressed out, or want to talk about your grade? Come talk to me about it! I have tea and cookies in my classroom. We can discuss it over that. smile

Rewards for good behavior might include:
- A class pizza party (There will be a drawing at the end of every semester to see which of my classes earns it. This is not based on your ability to answer questions, but rather your participation in class. Every time you participate or I see you working hard, I will give you a little playing card. If you return these cards to me at the end of class, a point will be added to your class for the pizza party. You'll be up against the beginning classes.)
- Extra Credit
- Picking an item from the class prize box
- A free homework pass
Bad behavior may result in:
- Being sent in for detention with Mr. Tekumi (Mr. Tekumi is a dear friend of mine and he tends visit my classroom quite often. If you'd like to avoid trouble with him, I would be sure to be polite and respectful.)
- Required after school time (You will be required to come see me after school sometime within the next two weeks. If you do not attend, points will be taken off of your daily participation.)
Discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated. If I begin to notice repeated offenses, you will be removed from my class.
I look forward to working with you!!
