Nathan was nervous.
It was a new and uncomfortable feeling for him, and he was certain he did not like it. Still, he could not deny that this was one of the most important things he had ever done. With that came a healthy dose of anxiety.
But he knew it was the next big step. It was the important thing to do. And it was the right time to do it.
He had been working to save money for quite some time. After picking up a job as a night security guard around town, he had managed to create for himself a steady enough income to support... well, what he wanted to surprise his beautiful girlfriend with. A home for them, away from the hectically full house of the Darrows, though it was quite full of love. It was just. Not theirs.
This would be.
What if he had picked the wrong place? What if the help he got from his dad for this secret plan, and his current job's salary, were not enough? What if they failed and crashed and ended up miserable?
Man, it was really difficult being an adult, but for some reason, Nate was not shying away from it this time. Hell, he'd even thought about the damn cat. He was ready to go, to show her the place. They could move in as soon as she wanted to, if she did.

Nathan had asked to meet her outside the library after her shift that afternoon. He'd said there was something he'd wanted to show her, and of course, Ellie had agreed happily, curiously. The last half hour of her day in the library had been spent speculating in conversations with Tony or Hadaya. Either neither knew what was going on, or they simply weren't sharing, but regardless, she was just going to have to see for herself. So right at three o'clock on the button Ellie making her way towards the glass double doors at the front of the old building, grinning as she spotted Nathan waiting on the stairs just beyond. "I hope whatever you have in mind doesn't require a change of clothes, because we'll have to swing by the house if it does." She was needling him, trying to get him to reveal something about what he had in store for her. A nice night out, perhaps? Her hand found his, small fingers sliding smoothly between his much larger ones as she came in to stand at his side.

Nathan looked up as Elle spoke to him, smiling at her softly and forgetting all of his worries for a moment. He could not help himself, really. She just put him in a good mood, even when he was not really paying attention to it. Being around her just made things better, and that was ultimately what he wanted to do for her in return.
Give her a better life. A really good one.
"No, no change of clothes needed. And it's not that far from here, anyway. So come on. You want to know what's going on, huh? Dad texted me, told me you were asking him about it all day." Of course, Tony knew what was going on, and Nate was a little worried the soft hearted old man had let something slip.
But it seemed Tony was pretty good with secrets after all, and had managed to hold his ground.
He started walking them toward what was to be their new home. Conveniently close to the library, of course, so she could easily get to work. And maybe because Tony helped find the place, and wanted to keep an eye on them.

Just where was he taking her? Ellie was beyond curious, and Nathan was well aware of it. Especially considering Tony had tattled to him about her trying to weasel the information out of him through out the day. That had her making a face, half amused, half sheepish. "I might have been." Had certainly been. "He wouldn't tell me, though." No matter how much she'd asked him. On the one hand, that meant the surprise hadn't been ruined, and that was a good thing, On the other hand, she just really wanted to know what was going on. Apparently she wouldn't have that much longer to wait, she hoped, as Nathan started leading the way down the sidewalk. As they walked, Elle could help but let her attention roam around roam, eyes flicking here and there as she tried to spot something, anything that could possibly be the surprise Nathan had in store for her. 'So if I asked where we're going," she started, glancing up at him as she lay her cheek against his arm. "I'm guessing you won't tell me?"

The street was quiet. It was not too far from the library and the areas they were used to frequenting. A small residential area that looked very peaceful and pretty, but certainly not a place they had ever had a tie to before. Until now.
He walked her to a small house on the lane, a one story, three bedroom place with a small front yard and a nice enough, grassy back one. It wasn't the biggest place, but it was a really nice starter home.
And there was a 'sold' sign sitting in the lawn.
With help from his father and stalwart dedication to his money raising plans, Nathan had managed to find them a nice little place for the two of them. Three, he supposed, as Hadaya would certainly be moving with them. And that was fine, he guessed. Everyone needed a pet, right?
"Uhm," he said, uncharacteristically nervous as he looked at her. "This is where we're going. I mean. For... a while, if you want. Like. We'd live here. I mean. You know... if you wanted to."
It would really suck if she didn't.

They were heading into the suburbs, away from the city and any possible outing Elle could have imagined them going on. It had her head tipping gently to one side as she glanced up at her boyfriend. Still without any clue as to what he had in store for her. "Are we visiting someone?" That question didn't really need a direct answer, not with them having apparently reached their destination. A small one-story house with a modest yard. None of the lights were on, and there was a sign hammered into the front lawn. A real estate sign, with a bold print 'sold' sign stationed along the top of it. She blinked at it, comprehension coming in a slow wave, helped along by Nathan's explanation of things. A house. He'd gotten them a house. They'd been talking about it, about moving out of his parent's house and starting their own life. Now that she had doctored papers, a social security number, an birth certificate, everything she would need. She'd thought, after the holidays...but he' done it, and he'd done it without her having any idea. The Darrows could keep a secret. "This is ours?" She couldn't help a small raise of her hand, pointing up the path. "Like, we own it?"

"Well, I mean. We will own it. We are on the way to owning it. We are... partial owners of this place, so far, but it's... you know. It's ours. So yeah, this is our house. I mean, you know, if you want to live here, like I said. I dunno."
He shoved his hands into his pockets and watched her, looking eager to see her reaction. At the moment, she seemed stunned, but he couldn't really blame her.
It wasn't like he had given her any reason to think he was ready for this kind of a step, or even really into it. Even when she brought up ideas of moving, he sort of just nodded his head along with her. Maybe he was just covering his own intentions, so she could not guess what he was really up to. Or maybe he really had just been really nervous about committing to it.
But he had. Here they were. They had a home of their own, for the two of them and her cat. It was what she wanted, right?
It was, as Nate had learned during this whole process, what he really wanted. More than anything, really: he just wanted a life where he could be with her all the time. It was strange that something so simple could make him so happy, but it did, and he loved it. He loved her.
"Merry Christmas, Elle."

Stunned was a bit of an understatement. Elle was having a hard time wrapping her mind around this. It wasn't as if she doubted Nathan's ability to provide for her, she had just had no idea he'd been planning this. This. This was big. This was something that took a ridiculous amount of time and money to put together, and he'd done it, probably with Tony's help, but still. Her gaze slipped from his face and back towards the house again. "Our house," she repeated softly, trying the words on for size as well as cementing it in her own mind. "This is our house." They had a house. Not an apartment, but a house! It was such a big step. Usually couples married first, didn't they? Or maybe that was on the agenda as well, and the house had been one of those situations where he'd had to move quickly or risk loosing a deal that couldn't have been passed up. It made her wonder, the idea of it, of marrying him, of starting a little family of their own, had a very soft little smile tracing along full lips. Body warming from the core. Of course he was still waiting for her reaction, and simply repeating what he'd already said really wasn't acceptable. Lips pressing together to control her smile, Elle turned back to look up at him, bouncing on her toes as she reached for his hands. "You bought me a house." Okay, maybe she was still having trouble finding words, but her excitement was very obvious.

Nathan watched her, seeing the way her mind was turning, and remained unsure if this was the right choice or not. What if it was too fast, and scared the crap out of her? What if she thought he was not good enough for something like this, or if he did end up failing her now that they were on their own?
Even with the help of his dad, he wanted to do this for himself. The safety net was there, but this was their life now. Together. He and Elle. He wanted to make it work for them, and prove that he was actually good for something. He was a man worth investing in, and someone who deserved all the love she gave him.
She made him want to be a better person.
She had already helped him do that.
"Are... are you okay? I mean. Is this... you wanted to move out, right? so I... I uhm. I've been working, at night, and I got together some money, and dad helped sign, and uh... well. I mean. There's enough room for you and me and your annoying cat, you know."

Was she okay? The question received the sort of look it deserved, and before he had even finished with his explination she was very literally jumping into his arms(He had good reflexes, she knew he'd catch her, he always did.), cutting off the unsure rambling with the press of soft lips. Yes she was happy. She was incredibly happy. Ellie had been expected a small two room apartment. Something simple, with a few less strings attached. This was so far above and beyond that. This was a commitment. This was very nearly a proposal,as far as she was concerned. You didn't buy a house for someone you weren't serious about. You just didn't. The kiss went on for a long while as Ellie wrapped her arms around his neck, melting against him like she always did. Like he was air, like he was life himself. She purred against his lips as her fingertips slid up into the back of his hair, and only when she was utterly breathless did she draw back enough to look at him, forehead to forehead. "I love you." Their lives were moving forward. They were really doing this.

Nate caught her, thankfully, laughing as she clung to him until her kiss cut the sound off. He closed his eyes and smiled against her lips, feeling relieved and happy with the response. All he really wanted to do these days, after all, was make her happy.
"I love you, too, Ellie. I really do. I mean. You know. I have trouble, sometimes, saying crap like that. But I mean. Not crap. But look, I do love you, and I want to be with you, like, all the time. So."
He wasn't ready to propose to her, not just yet, but he wanted to do the next best thing. This seemed like it: they could live together, and see if it worked in the long run. They were already pretty used to all the little bullshit idiosyncrasies, after all, from living together at Tony's for the last few months.
And hey, he hadn't throttled her annoying cat yet, so that had to mean something.
"I just want you to know that I'm going to love you forever, no matter what. I'm going to be there for you."

Articulating his feelings wasn't always Nathan's strong suit, but Elle never had any trouble understanding what he meant. He loved her, and she knew it. She felt it every day she was with him. Every moment of every day. They had risked so much to be together. She was content to stay wrapped up in his arms, dainty feet dangling inches off the ground. It meant she could rest her forehead against his, breath in the smell of his soap and his skin, and drown in the darkness of his chocolate eyes. Like this, she didn't even feel the chill, it was like being wrapped in magic. "You promise?" Forever sounded just about right. Ellie could imagine being without him. Obviously. He was her world. "I don't want to be anywhere but with you, always."
