Generally, when Ashanite went to Negaspace, it was to drop off his quota and leave. He found it uncomfortable - it was tied far too much, for him, to his earliest days as an officer, when he had been confused and unsure and barely oriented to having only his memories of Ploutonion. Much easier to do what he had to do and get out.

But he had been considering Quartz's advice regarding a personal youma, and he supposed if they were as useful as All-One it might not hurt to look into the possibility. Even if All-One did sort of still make him deeply uncomfortable. So he had taken the trip down the Hall of Shadows - unnerving as that was - and stepped into the Rift itself.

It was...not what he had expected, though he wasn't sure what qualified as expectations. It was strange and foreign and all in crystal, and he found himself absently fiddling with the charm around his neck. His senses were overwhelmed by youma - which would probably go a far way to explain why he didn't notice the presence of a General.

since you mentioned Laby likes the Rift, figured it would be easiest to set it there!

Some times, when he stepped into the Rift, it felt like home to the General. Other times, it felt like a prison -- one he entered willingly, because he feet brought him there instinctively and who was he to deny instinct?

This particular visit had happened because he sough penance. For what, he didn't know and still, his feet carried across the barren plains and past the pillars he used to train on and towards the skeleton-bone tree he'd visited the last time he'd ventured into the rift.

It was fitting, he supposed, that he'd return to the same place he'd left the Saturn knight's starseed now that he had three more to add to the burial grounds. Like before, a raven-like youma watched him with it's three sets of eyes and four wings. This time Labyrinthite was not unsettled, something settling deep within him when he looked upon the youma curiously, starseeds tinkling against each other as he reached the tree.

The bone branches stretched upwards, fingers reaching for the empty space above them and the trunk was brittle and scratched -- an after effect, he assumed, from the last time he'd visited and left a starseed.

This time, instead of laying them at the base of the tree, while the youma gathered hungrily, desperately, he placed them within the finger-branches and left.

There was no reason to linger this time, there was no retribution to seek, just a task that was completed.

It wasn't until he turned, with the intention of returning to the Hall of Shadows, that he spotted the captain. His head cocked curiously, interest piqued with the way he fiddled nervously with the charm around his neck.

"This isn't a place you should be in if you are uncertain."

Ashanite was not prepared to deal with another officer - certainly not a General, not when he was in fact uncertain about being down here at all. The longer he spent in the Rift, the more he wanted to turn and run and forget this place existed. This was not a place for men, any more than the deepest catacombs of Ploutonion had ever been meant as a place for the living.

Still, he quickly schooled his expression to hide that moment of being startled, and gave the General a professionally polite smile. "Uncertain or not, I'll never master my nerves if I don't challenge myself." Which was true enough. Even though this place terrified him, he had to master it and push past it.

He did like the idea of a personal youma, and he wasn't exactly going to trip over one in Destiny City. He would have to venture further into the Rift, no matter how much he didn't want to. And he was absolutely not above asking for advice.

"Are you familiar with the Rift?" He asked, idly. Any sort of hints he could pull out would make his own journey down easier. "I understand it to be thoroughly treacherous, and the home of youma, but I confess, I don't know much beyond that."

Labyrinthite regarded the other man slowly, eyes sweeping across his frame and the way he held himself. It was obvious how out of place he was an the general found himself wondering if, perhaps, this was the captain's first time in the rift. It was then that he wondered when the ranks had crumbled so much that babes were allowed to do such dangerous things alone.

"I am," he replied slowly, voice low and gravely. "And if you are not then you should not be here on your own." He remembered the days when he'd first come to the rift, how they'd been lead by confident agents capable of holding their own against the youma too strong to listen to the commands of a captain. "Tell me, have you been here before?"

His own memories flashed before him, the journey to reclaim pieces of the greater youma they'd used against the surrounding, the village he'd treated as a second home when he'd first become a captain, and the raven youma that seemed to follow him as he moved through the barren wasteland that used to be the Knight's Academy.

"Tell me, what is it that you are looking for?" That was the more important question that what the captain might find. "Because the perils of the rift might not be worth the risk Captain..."

Ashanite did not flinch under scrutiny - he was used to that, was even sort of used to a certain level of disdainful sneer at his uniform, as if he could control it. This General's gaze didn't come with that, which was nice.

No, it was true, he shouldn't be here alone, and he knew it - but who was he going to ask? He wasn't entirely sure he trusted Xenotime to be responsible; dragging Umber along for every ridiculous whim was - well - ridiculous; Quartz was the same rank as him. "No, this is the first time I've been here," he admitted. "I should have asked for an escort," he shrugged his shoulders, as if dismissing it as a minor misjudgement instead of something potentially deadly.

He laughed, briefly, reached to push a hand through his hair. "One of the other Captains I've worked with has the most brilliantly useful personal youma - I'd thought to explore, see if there was something suited to me." Which sounded remarkably sane, if it didn't involve venturing into the darkest parts of Negaverse space, surrounded by legitimately homicidal monsters.

"Captain Ashanite, at your service, General...?" and he let his own question hang similarly. A less direct but workable way to get the man's name.

"If you think the senshi and their knights are dangerous, then you do not want to see what lurks in the belly of this domain." Especially since the uncontrollable had been released from their cage and roamed the Rift freely, hungry and insatiable. He looked at Ashanite with skepticism, uncertain that the man could even fight.

He listened quietly, expression stony as the man explained and he clucked his tongue against the roof of his mouth. "Personal youma can be useful, but do not trust them." It could be a grave mistake to. "My advice is to keep the Hall of Shadows within your line of sight, stray too far and you might not make it out."

Labyrinthite had turned away, ready to leave the captain to his youma hunting when he introduced himself and the general stilled. His mouth stretched into a too-wide grin with the points of his canines expose and glistening against the dim lighting of their environment. "General Labyrinthite," he introduced slowly, watching to see how he might reach.

The general assumed that if Scholomance was throwing names at him in an attempt to stir things up, perhaps he'd informed his dear friend of his attacker's name.

Ashanite accepted the warnings and advice with little comment, but a polite hum of acknowledgement.

"I'll keep your warnings in mind, sir," he said. No reason to discount advice from someone who likely had a good chunk of experience on him, especially in the particular matters of the Rift and youma. He was all too willing to admit to this being an area he had little to no knowledge in.

Hearing the General's name, however, felt like getting ice water dumped down his back. Labyrinthite. Labyrinthite who had eviscerated Scholomance for nothing more than the crime of being a Squire in the wrong place at the wrong time - and Scholomance's most recent letter to Ashanite himself suggested that...well.

That Scholomance had suspicions that were not entirely incorrect. How much did Labyrinthite know about him? What, exactly, was the best way to approach this - the way to approach this that didn't end with him bleeding to death or slipping into an unconsciousness he would never wake from?

"I've heard your name before," he said, and he kept his tone as idle and calm as possible. No reason to show his hand or make it obvious that he was nervous. That would only make the General more suspicious. "I believe we have a mutual acquaintance."

Perhaps bringing up Scholomance in that way, showing that he wasn't afraid to confess to association with the Squire, would encourage Labyrinthite to believe that he wasn't acting out of disloyalty.

The captain's answer seemed genuine and Labyrinthite could respect someone who was willing to actively take advice from someone who had been in the game far longer. The Rift was like a second home to him, a village with in it's depths welcomed him with open arms and buzzing news. He spent a fair amount of time there, when he wasn't occupied with other things.

Watching the reaction to his name brought the teasing curl of a smirk to his lips. Interesting. Scholomance's letters have been full of name dropping when it came to the man across from him but to know that his name had been dropped in return...

He feigned ignorance.

"You'll have to be more specific Captain. I have served the Negaverse for many years. Mutual acquaintance could easily mean anyone." Pink spatted boots drew him forward.
