Today was just a day like any other for Pumpkin Spice, the overly large yet somehow still gangly filly, had wandered close to the mountains. She was, like always, curious about everything and these giant things sticking up out of the ground was enough to make her wander closer. As she got closer, they got bigger and she was becoming less sure about them.
Finally she reached what could be called the base of the mountain and looked about. "Huh... Not much here..." She said to no one in particular. Her stomach chose that moment to start making the noises she'd identified as being hungry. In the Carnival she had never gone hungry so the sensation was new-ish to her, since she remember nothing before the brand. Thinking about it made her glowing yellow eyes rise upward and crossed to try and look at it. Though trying to look at it too long made her dizzy and she began assuming this was a power of the brand so she'd stopped doing it quite so frequently. The dizzy feeling came quickly so she uncrossed her eyes and focused on finding something to fill her aching stomach. Settling on some scrub sticking up between the rocks she began munching the bland tasteless roughage. Unable to help it she sighed, somewhat missing the hay the Carnival had fed her.

Today was one of the rare days that Cult left her mate's side to go traveling and exploring on her own. Even though she was extremely content with the life she and her darling grumpy Helboar had created for herself a part of Cult's heart would always belong to the skies. Keeping a mare like her grounded for long periods of time was plain cruel, and her mate Maddox knew and accepted this after so many years of being together.

Though on this trip out Cult had decided to stick rather close to their home hidden on the steep snowy cliffs above. She had let the searing cold winds coming down from the mountain top push her gradually lower and lower in altitude till finally she had been left at the base of the mountain. It was here the warmer thermals allowed her to more freely maneuver in the skies and Cult could afford to focus on other things besides keeping herself airborne. Like being on the look out for some last season sweet mountain grasses!

Cult's green eyes lazily scanned the ground below, searching for some tasty snacks that she could fuel up on before she ventured further out from her home to go visit her adult children. 'Hmmmmmm~ Far too dark. Too light. Ew, black berries this time of year? No thank you. And oranges! Oranges never shoul- Wait...oranges?' With a large flap of her wings Cult stopped dead in her tracks. Her ears perked up as she tensed up, unsure of this abnormal occurrence. Hm, it was moving. So it was something alive. However it was far too small to be a adult Soquili but yet seemed to be too large to be a foal. Skinwalker in animal form or wild animal perhaps? It seemed the most likely suspect.

Well there was easy ways to scare off wild animals once one was actually on the ground. If it was a skinwalker she could always take high up to the skies again but she would have her answer on what had found it's way so close to her home.

Folding her wings tightly into her sides Cult dived bombed out of the sky towards the direction. She opened her ginormous wing span to it's full length before she hit the ground with a large thud. Effectively it not only saved her from hurting herself but having a giant of a mare land and use her full size in a aggressive stance should have driven off any dangerous animal in a matter of seconds.

Only...that it wasn't a animal, or a skinwalker that was in front of Cult. It was a filly! A orange and rather overly large filly, but still just a child clearly. A now half scared to death child that was still reeling at Cult's sudden grand entrance.

"O-Oh dear..."

The sudden entrance of the giant winged mare left Pumpkin reeling until finally she came to rest on her rump, cheat grass still hanging out of her mouth staring up at the large dark colored form. She squeaked and whinnied loudly before jumping to her feet and running off behind a large boulder, "Wh...Who're you..?" Came the stammering response. She'd never met someone quite so large before... Yellow glowing eyes scanned the adult mares form trying to ascertain if she was a threat. When nothing immediately happened she came partially out from behind the boulder and watched carefully.

Cult winced at the ear piercing whinnies and distresses squeaks coming from the filly before her. Closing her eyes she lowered her head slightly to combat the ringing now in her ears. When the horrid noises finally stopped, Cult peeked open one eye to scan the area. Only to find the foal had fled unsurprisingly.

'I suppose I deserve that. Better take to the skies and look for her before sh-'

One of her dark ears flicked at the tiny, weak voice that pulled her from her thoughts. Lifting her head up Cult took a timid half step forward before pausing, realizing that she still had her wings displayed fully out. Looking big and bad was not going to win her any favors with a already scared child that's for sure! So carefully she folded in her wings - to the point they were uncomfortable - into her side.

Offering up a weak smile Cult took another large yet slow stride forward, easing herself over to the filly now coming out from her hiding spot. Craning her head low so she could be at eye level with the orange filly Cult finally answered the question given to her. "Cult. My name is Cult. Who...are you, little one? And what are you doing so far up here alone?"

Now that Cult didn't look so imposing Pumpkin couldn't help but be curious about the giant mare. "Mah name is Pumpkin Spice, C..Cult." She stammered over the name being as it was the first name that started with c she'd ever said. "I was jus lookin for food really, but I am here cause I walked here!" She didn't know why Cult asked what she was doing here. It seemed a funny question. All you had to do was walk to get here.
Pumpkin walked around Cult fascinated as to why she was so big. "Why're you so big miss Cult?" She cocked her head this way and that, leaving glowing trails of light from her illuminated eyes with how fast she was doing the gesture.

"Pumpkin Spice? Mm, what a fitting name for you. Though when I first saw you I had mistaken you as a orange!" Frowning softly she slowly lifted one of her wings up. Bending it forward she used one of her large primary feathers to prod the side of Pumpkin.

Good gods, who had been taking care of this girl? Even just with the lightest of pushes she could feel almost every bone in her side! A couple more weeks and she was gonna be looking like a walking skeleton at this rate. Tsking to herself she stepped around the rock, using her wing as a gentle guiding force. "Well, c'mon little Pumpkin. This side of the face is no place for food growth. Let's go find you something good to eat."

She couldn't help but smile at the filly's antics as they moved along. Ah, to be so young, innocent and full of energy even when faced with hardship! "Wellllll....I ate lots and lots of good fruits and veggies when I was but a wee filly like you. I had to keep growing taller and taller to reach only the best high up in the tree tops! Finally I got so fat and happy with food I just stopped growing. Looks to me with your size that you also if you keep eating right will grow up to be tall just like me."

Pumpkin giggled a bit when Cult poked her with her wing, unknowing that the larger mare was testing her. She wasn't yet aware that she was beginning to starve, though her stomach sure did make noises more often. "Or..." She paused tongue tripping over the word, "Oranges? What are oranges?" She perked up at the mention of better food completely forgetting her initial question about the oranges. Ah the attention span of a curious filly... Literally non-existent. "Mkay! I'd really like something good to eat. The spiky bushes always hurt mah tummy..." Cheat grass was never good for foals and it tasted like dust and dirt.
She started giggling again at Cult's explanation of how she got so big. "Yur silly miss Cult! I bet I won't be as big as you!" She brushed against the older mares side completely trusting of this stranger, not caring what happened. She just wanted the company and the food.

Giggling softly she gave a slight nod to Pumpkin when she tripped over the word. "Oranges, yes. Oranges are...well they are a very juicy fruit that is very soft and squishy on the inside. Plus, they are the color of your fur! They are found normally far too the south, near the sea." Hey, who said you couldn't teach and walk? Gasping slightly she sputtered in her steps. If the filly was so desperate that she was eating cheat grass, who knows what other nasty and most likely more deadly foods she had gotten into unknowingly! "You eat the spiky bushes? Oh Pumpkin, no wonder your tummy hurts! I'm surprised you aren't sick by now."

It begged the question for Cult, where was this filly's care takers?

Craning her head down she gave Pumpkin a slight nuzzle before flaring out her wings. "Wait here for just a second, miss big silly filly~" Stepping away from Pumpkin so she wouldn't hurt her Cult flapped her her wings, taking off into the skies. It would take far too long for Pumpkin to travel up where the good feed still was, so, as much as she hated to leave her alone Cult elected to take the quicker route and just go get the goods herself. Cult quickly landed and took off again all across the side of the mountain picking up bits of rich mountain grass, branches of sweet snow berries, and roots that were known to calm upset tummies. Cult was mindful to keep herself within eyesight of Pumpkin, so not only she could keep an eye on the orange filly but also so the foal could know where she was.

Finally after a short time Cult landed in front of Pumpkin. This time thankfully she did it a lot gracefully and less intimidating! Though her large body still made quite the loud thud and gust of wind when it met with the ground. Folding her wings closed Cult eased forward before dropping the array of food out of her mouth in front of Pumpkin, as well as taking some stiffer roots she stuck into her bracelets out onto the ground. "That should be a good start for now! There are better feeding grounds on the other side of the mountain but you need your strength up for right now."

"Oranges sound really tasty!" She pawed at the ground thinking about what a juicy fruit would taste like. She couldn't remember ever eating anything like that at the carnival. They were only ever fed dry hay and sometimes oats if they performed well. She hadn't done too well... "I'm not supposed tah eat the spiky bushes? But it was green so I thought it was food..." What was being sick? She wondered.
When Cult told her to stay put and nuzzled her she sat on the ground and smiled goofily waiting like a good girl, for all of 3 seconds after Cult took off to get food. Then she was up wandering around looking at everything, from a mole hill to a snake den. The world was so full of interesting things and she just couldn't get enough!
The wind blew across the ground, buffeting her a little but doing no harm as Cult landed again and laid down, what was to Pumpkin, a veritable feast! Wiggling her little stub of a tail she dug straight into the food, nibbling grasses and berries. When she'd swallowed her first mouthful of food she looked up to Cult, "Thank you very much miss Cult. This is tah best food I've ever had!" She could feel her stomach finally stop protesting as she nibbled more of the offerings.

Cult catching her breath she nodded at the excited filly before flopping down her wings splaying out on her sides. "Whew. It's been years since I flew that fast!" Cult couldn't help but beam a grin from ear-to-ear at just how excited Pumpkin was over the feast laid out before her. Setting her head on the ground she lazily kept an eye on the filly since even with the face fast she was munching down at it would still take her a good while to get through all of the goodies! "It's no problem, Pumpkin. I'm just sorry it's not earlier in the season so you could enjoy a more ample meal. But, beggars can't be choosers with winter coming."

Using her wing she pushed a good chunk of alfalfa grass and sprouts her way. The high nutrient rich food was a sure fire way to put some weight on the starving filly. Even if it didn't taste all that great! "Make sure to have some of these too! I know they're no snow berries, but they are still good for ya. It'll give you energy for us going out and looking for your parents."

Pumpkin slowed down mowing through the food as Cult spoke about winter. The large orange filly had never heard of this winter but something in her body thought that is sounded cold and miserable. Pumpkin sighed slightly and nibbled the food more, thinking about what winter could mean but then Cult spoke again pushing a chunk of dark green stuff at her. She thought back to saying that just cause it was green it was tasty and wondered if this would hurt her belly like the spiky grass did, but it was Cult's words about parents that brought her out of thoughts. "I don't have parents..." The words were said in a low and miserable voice. "I had a sister but I dun know where she is... We got separated after we escaped from the Carnival..." Just thinking about the Blood Moon Carnival made her fur stand on end. The Ringmaster and his crew were so cruel to her. Branding her forehead with their awful mark and making her do tricks to amuse others.
Carefully she munched on the alfalfa and sprouts and despite the bitter flavor she didn't say anything, just stared at the food, with a far off look on her face. Her mind full of the image of her mother laying there, her sides not moving, her eyes clouded in death. The image was something she would never forget.
