Kalidas was somewhat irritated. He'd found his sister several moons ago, but she had of all things a mate. And not just any kind of mate, something as inferior to her greatness as something that looked like a pink cow. Kalidas sneered at the thought of his in law. Submissive, cheerful, sweet hearted, and devoted to his sister despite his obvious failures as anything other than food.
It was VEXING. Kalidas' mood was dark as he found himself so wrapped up in wondering why his sister would ever decide to mate to something so far below her. It wasn't like she couldn't have found someone as great as herself to spend her life with. But for some reason she chose this...walking hunk of food. She apparently had first thought to eat him, but found his brightness too difficult to devour so she took him as her mate.
"WHY?" He scowled and shouted at no one in particular. How had his killer of a sibling EVER become so soft? He longed for the days when she would rend through unsuspecting Ceryeni stallions who thought they were up to her level. She'd devoured them with glee on her face. This cow should have been no more than a quick lunch.
He was fuming as he headed into a clearing, far enough that he wouldn't be found too soon, but not so far that he couldn't be found. After all, she'd gone so far as to convince the wishing star to lead him to her, it wouldn't do to disappear on her. She was after all, his only family, no matter how much he disapproved of her choices in mateship.
Kalidas smirked, a handsome mate was better, or perhaps someone as lethal as she was. Maybe he could find someone who matched that. He could eat the cow and then convince his sister to be their mate! He looked bright for a few moments, then shook his head. Liela would KILL whoever took her mate from her, she was just as protective of the cow as she was of Kalidas himself. Vexing as it was, it looked as though the cow was there to stay.
Flopping in the clearing her grumbled to himself and then felt so sorry for himself for having such a terrible in-law.

A thin shadow circled from over head as blood colored eyes watched the ground for, something. The piebald condor circled high, diving low at points to grab at birds that happened to pass within reach. Snapping the small bodies into bits, the condor wheeled around as something appeared in the clearing beneath. Diving lower and its head tilting to one side, it watched this strange soquili as it tromped through the grass. Meat! Scraps! These were things that flashed through the bird's skull as it turned in haste back towards something else that loomed within the shadows... The shadows were little more then a shroud over the beast that loomed within them, while his black and brown colors were enough to hide him from sight, those red pigmented feathers showed up like red flags. A cry echoed from the skies as the beast turned and looked towards the condor that dove in his direction. What had the filthy thing found this time? He answers weren't of the vocal kind as the condor wheeled around to head away again. Grunting to himself, Checkmate shrugged off the shadows and thrashed into the skies. Blood stained claws raked at the air, leaving furrows in whatever was caught in their paths.
Tail feathers spread like a fan behind Checkmate as he followed the condor, that most would say was little more then a bag of rotting meat. Just the beast's type, he had to have someone to feast on the remains of whatever he left behind. Coming close to the clearing, Checkmate glanced down at something flopped within the grass.
"Excellent my little meat bag." Checkmate said as the bird circled around.
Dropping into whatever shadows, Checkmate's claws dug into the earth before easing to the edges. Bloodied eyes watching the stallion that laid within the clearing, beak clicking slightly.
"Not the best place to be sleeping, friend." Checkmate rasped, his eyes filled with hunger.

He felt it was odd that there would be a scavenger bird out this far, he put the thought from his mind for the moment as his ears flicked to other noises in the surrounding area. Something....unnerved him, but he pulled back that fear response. He was after all not going to injure his pride by bolting like the coward he was at the moment.
The voice that suddenly rang out was unpleasant and hungry. That made him want to cringe as he carefully, and, as nonchalantly as he could manage, stretched then stood. A short glance behind him before he turned to greet one of the ugliest things he'd run into since coming to these lands. Even the cow wasn't nearly so gross looking. Granted the cow had a redeeming sort of gentleness to him. This...was a giant bird thing that was partially horse.
He smirked internally and looked astonished on the outside, "Why would that be friend?" His tone was sweet and innocent as he pretended to be just another idiot. He fully suspected something, this bird looked like it was ready to devour him on the spot. And he stupidly had no support, he should not have wandered nearly as far as he had. But it wasn't like he knew there was something this disturbed running around. Liela needed to warn him about these things!Liela snorted as she spotted her brother. She'd been careful to tail him when she'd discovered his absence from their normal hunting grounds. He was after all just idiotic enough to get himself into more trouble than any four half as smart Soquili.
Her ears flattened at the noises and the scent of blood lust in the air, something was hungry and it seemed that perhaps her brother was talking to it. She shifted gently, stalking, her scent hidden by the woodland creatures and trees. If this thing was a problem, she would need to be in range fast. Liela was not going to lose her idiot brother to his mouthing off.

Blood, death and rot clung to the beast like a cloud over a mountain peak. Beak clicking dully he advanced upon the stallion before him, sizing it up and where to 'cut' first. Feathers bristled as the stallion started talking to him, he hated chatty meals, but their screams were another thing entirely. Sashaying to one side, trying to keep the one before him on edge, his wings flicking to send his scent in many directions to try and scare off other predators in the area. This was going to be his kill and whatever was left was going to be Dealer's, who was perched in a tree at current.
"You never know just when you'll be taking your last breath." Checkmate said as he moved slightly closer to the stallion.
Nostrils flared as he drew close enough to get a good whiff of the prey. He seemed strong and healthy, perfect for what he wanted. While Checkmate normally picked off foals from unsuspecting parents, he was looking for something bigger this time. His 'mate' needed nourishment, if one wanted to call her his mate. She was with another, forbidden to be truly his, but he could always think she was his alone.
"That and You look good enough to eat, the mother of my children requires her lot as well." Checkmate rasped, drawing slightly closer, his claws itching to rend flesh from bone, so much they dug into the ground.

Oh joy. Mentally he was calculating each move of that ugly bird thing that was trying to stalk him. He kept his breathing even, his heart rate slow and measured. He was not about to end up being someone's meal. Especially not something this damn hideous. It wouldn't do to be eaten by something that looked like it had a run in with the wrong end of a bird and a horse.
He dropped the innocent act quite promptly, "That's pretty laughable. No I do not know when I'll draw my last breath." A cocky and determined smirk crossed his glorious features, "But you're not going to be the one who determines that, birdy." Kalidas shifted from what he called his slight stance to the one he held when he fought beside his sister, he no longer looked like the easy mark he had, muscles rippling under his coat, the feathered shoulders nearly bristling.
That smirk showed more sharpened teeth as he worked himself up, he would not go down without a fight, and though there were claws that could rend, there were wings that could be torn, "Your claws look pretty nasty, but that's only if you're fast enough with them." His eyes narrowed, "Truthfully, you'd better luck with a nice soft doe."Liela's ears flicked as she was close enough to hear words. Eat? Is he seriously planning to eat my brother? Her ears flattened against her head as her tail twitched violently and her hackles raised under her furs. Oh no you do not get to eat him. Her movements became more determined as her speed picked up.
Within moments she'd picked up enough speed that her form broke from the line of shadows into the clearing, no sound but her hooves hitting the ground hard and fast, she was going to smash right into this bird thing at full speed if he didn't move in time, or notice her. If he moved then in the least he'd have two of them to deal with instead of one foolish twit who had opened his mouth and gotten himself into trouble.

Circling over head, the condor from earlier had taken flight once more. At the flash of color shoot from the shadows. This was a new body was charging towards its master. A shrilled shriek erupted from the bird before it dropped from the sky in a nosedive towards the offending body. Dealer looked to try and cut off this new force to let Checkmate have his own way with the stallion. Lowing his head, Checkmate gave the stallion a stiff grin before leaping at him, barely inches out of the way of the charging mare's range. Claws slicing through air as he purposefully missing the stallion, giving a bit of a warning strike. He was going to get himself a meal this day and it was one that could keep him going for days to come.
Then there was the flash of color and the shriek from above, more? This day was turning out to be all the better. Bouncing back a pace or two to see what was up now. Beak clicking together in anticipation of a meal. Those blood red eyes almost giving a glow in lust and the need to see something bleed.
"More lambs to the slaughter? All the better for me and my slave. This pile shall last us for days." Checkmate grinned over his beak, pupils shrinking as his nostrils flared, two against one. This was about to get interesting!

Blatantly ignoring the shrieking creature dropping from the air, the sound wasn't large enough for her to worry about it, so rather than figure where it was coming from, she simply doubled her speed. Hooves hit hard in the ground as she came to a stop no longer aiming to knock the stallion down, but growling at the thing that was seemingly hell bent on eating her brother, her breathing was even, and her stature was that of something larger, terrifying, she looked like the b*****d child of a skinwalker and a kalona with the fur that covered her back. Her ears flattened against her head and her growl was nearly a snarl, "I see you found a giant carnivorous turkey. Good job."Kalidas had heard the shriek, and didn't budge as the giant bird decided to try and make him run. Nope. fleeing for the woods would do him no good. Winged things were always a pain in the a** to outrun and this one was just trying to get into his head and run him off. His eyes narrowed, again calculating, those claws were nasty but wings like his weren't hard to shred. Then he heard the hoof beats of death itself come to stop beside him. There was a tension in her body he knew well. She was going to give him a lashing. After of course this was over. No way was he getting out of it, and though he found the thought unfair, he also looked forward to the admonishing of his sibling. It was after all what would happen as long as they made it out from this insanity alive.
He hadn't expected that back up would appear nearly so soon. Or at all. But there she was. His long lost and very pissed off looking sister. Her anger was quite apparent, he almost chuckled at her description of the thing he'd run into. Though she'd arrived, he did not take his eyes off the bird thing, "Of course, I figured you were hungry, he might sate your desire to rip something's wings off. You know. A challenge for the mighty huntress." He knew that it would be difficult, but with her at his side, they stood far more of a chance than he had alone. Her snarl turned to a sadistic grin, the thought of tearing this giant turkey's wings off gave her a tingling feeling, "Good, even if he kills us, we'll cripple him permanently." Her tone was assured, mutual destruction, her mate would live with it. She was not going to abandon her brother. And their speaking was as though they were merely speaking of a good hunt rather than fearing for their lives, a very different reaction than most would have given the situation.Alas the bird had run into a pair who saw this as nothing more than a challenge to be overcome, fear was not something that Liela allowed, particularly not when it came to protecting the family she'd thought was long gone. Eyes flashed in defiance, they were not lambs, they were devourers of souls.
