Dris'rynne wasn't prepared for Oba.

The sheer size of not only the nation itself, but of the amount of inhabitants it held was overwhelming. Niyani assured her that the swells were normal in their cities, but the numbers put her on edge. The only other time she had seen this people earthlings together in one place had been when they launched the attack on the Alkidike extremists. It was unnerving to know that so many voluntarily lived this close together, crammed into buildings that grasped for the sky.

Had it not been for the scorching sun she might have looked up to the higher levels of the buildings, but the heat...Dris'rynne was used to humidity, but this...Where were the trees? The glowing fungi, the wild radaku? Niyani led their wagon closer to the heart of Kalv, one of the larger suppliers for non-Oban wares. He seemed jovial, even pleasant as he greeted familiar faces and turned down familiar streets. Most didn't seem to mind the shifter's presence; Niyani was an experienced traveling merchant, and they had seen enough of his friendly mug to become accustomed to it.

"I thought there would be others here...Non-Obans, with the tournament being held. I thought it was supposed to be big." Dris'rynne sat in the back of the wagon, carefully keeping three tarped blankets between her and the mound of weaponry they carted.

"It is big. There's going to be a prize pot and everything; but we aren't going." He announced, taking a moment to look over his shoulder to his step-daughter. "We're going to the registration booth. Once the combatants see our goods they'll be telling their friends and soon enough we'll have all the coin we need to buy up some new materials for your grandfather."

It was a practical decision, but not one she necessarily looked forward too. It seemed...dull and lifeless compared to their journey thus far. Maybe it was time for a little rebellion...

“How interesting to see you’re getting ready for the same event as I am,” Tisiru said as he leaned on the doorframe.

“Don’t pride yourself thinking I am copying you. I certainly didn’t learn from you that there would be a competition. Some court lady told me.” She glared at him through the mirror as she fixed her gauntlets.

“It’s going to be great fighting you little sister in the final round.” And with that he pushed himself off and walked away laughing to himself. Karothdra rolled her eyes; by the gods she hated him. She was going to give him the smack down of a lifetime in the arena.

Taking a deep breath, Karothdra closed her eyes and made a silent prayer before leaving their home and heading towards the registration booths. She wondered if she would see anyone she knew there, she knew a few others of the same rank as her had been talking about applying as well. It would be interesting to see who had actually decided to show up. The prize pot was a nice incentive, but there were also much better warriors who would be applying as well. Karo could end up losing to someone older than her.

Once at the arena, the place looked like it was quite packed with people and not just other competitors. It was looking like there were also plenty of spectators who were looking forward to a good fight. As Karo waited in line she glanced around, there were quite a few merchants abound looking to sell their weapons and such. Karo spotted a Shifter with a scar over her eyes and tilted her head. Good warriors had scars, so once the Oban had registered herself she headed over to glance at the wares they had to offer.

“So where do you come from?” She asked as she ran her hand on one of the items.

Dris'rynne hesitated outside of the registration table, simply watching as others of all shapes, colors and nationalities passed through. More than a few were easily twice her age, with muscles large enough to crush stone. It was probably the most intimidated she had felt since facing down the bandits in Tale.

Niyani was more than pleased to see the youthful new customer. Although, he was busily chatting with another contestant himself, and ushered Dris'rynne with a look to 'play nice'.

Not that it was terribly hard; she was gruff, but not unwelcoming. This girl looked to be about her age, if not a little older, and from the look of her clothing wealthy to boot. "A small village in Jauhar. My grandfather has a forge there, though he has plans to expand." Her hands shifted over the various blades laid out before her; daggers of various sizes, throwing knives, gauntlets and even a shield or two.

"Is this your first time fighting in a tournament?"

Karothdra ignored the blades and favored the gauntlets. She didn’t like using weapons; she felt they made you weak. Your body was your strongest ally. Picking up one of the gauntlets, she tested the bends and looked over the material. It was well done and the materials of good quality. Karo didn’t really need any new items, but she always liked giving things a look. She’d never really taken a look at merchants who had come from outside of Oba before. She had a bit of time to spare now and there seemed to be an abundance of them now.

“This kind of tournament yes,” she said glancing at the girl. “Usually military officials stay away from these kinds of things, but I like participating in them. Gets your name out there.” And she also wanted to beat her brother. “You seem like a fighter, are you going to be participating?” Unless she was actually a merchant, but she didn’t look it. "Or maybe you're just here to watch?"

WHELP, I dropped the ball on this one! I thought I had tagged already. 8'D So sorry!

Military officials? She supposed a privately funded event like this might draw the wrong sort of attention for the higher ups, so she really couldn't blame them for not showing up. Her eye drifted out over the crowd, picking up a few members of rank, but not nearly as many as there might have been.

"...I'm supposed to be assisting my father." Though, with the way the man was cheerfully marketing his wares she didn't think he needed her help. Rather, he might have just been making sure there were no more 'incidents', like back in Tale.

"...but I've never actually been in a tournament." Dris'rynne furrowed her brow as she thought on it. Would it be so bad? "I would like to try...unless registration is already closed." Her split second decision might mean squat if she didn't get the chance to slip in.

It's okay! I thought you might have gotten busy! smile

“Oh no still plenty of time to join in,” Karothdra chuckled. “If you dare.” She didn’t want to scare the girl, but she was curious to know her potential. “That is if your father will allow you.” She glanced at him. Karo wondered if all Shifters were like this, she’d met a few very briefly but were they all so family oriented? If the girl had potential then she ought to be using it =, she looked strong after all. Or maybe Karothdra had read the situation wrong, but she doubted it. She was really hoping the the other girl would sign up.

“If you want I can wait in line with you and help you with your registration. They wouldn’t dare refuse me if I said you were my friend.” She shrugged. She herself had already registered but she wouldn’t mind waiting in line to make sure the Shifter didn’t get any hiccups trying to register. She could see some Oban trying to disqualify her because of her eye and Karothdra wouldn’t let that happen. “It’s up to you of course, I can also get lost if that’s what you want.” The Oban chuckled, maybe she wouldn’t want the companionship.

Dris'rynne too turned to look at her father, and as if sensing two pairs of eyes upon him, the man turned their way. He passed a winning smile to the young Oban girl and a questioning look to his daughter. When she waved him over, he held up a finger, indicating he would once he was finished with his current customer.

"You would...really do that for me? But you don't even know me." The offer surprised her, and made her a little wary at the same time. Was she truly just being nice, or was there some ulterior motive behind this? Not that it truly mattered, she supposed; Dris'rynne wanted to fight and this was her ticket in.

"Hello, miss." Niyani appeared behind his daughter, and placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. She knew the action, and nearly groaned aloud. He thought she was having issues making a sale; again. Dris'rynne's personality really didn't make the best merchant, but she tried. "Is there something I can help you wi-?"

"She's offered to help me to register for the tournament." The petite shifter blurted out, craning her head so she could see his reaction. His eyes bulged, and he very nearly made an argument, but she cut him off again. "I want to do this, Niyani."

He squirreled his lips into a tight lipped frown. Knowing full well that his girl didn't often make personal requests he felt his shoulders sag with defeat. "Fine, you can go, but-" And then he turned to look the Oban in the eye. He wasn't trying to be threatening; the man was just worried. "-watch over my daughter, will you?" It seemed a stupid request to him, asking someone else to watch over his daughter in a battle arena, but, well, what else could he do?

“A good commander sees the strength in those around him,” She gave her father a small nod to acknowledge him as he served his last client. “It’s a skill I have been trying to better and I see strength in you, it should not be squandered away.” She shrugged as if it was plain to see for everyone. “Everyone ought to have a chance, if it wasn’t you I would have done the same for anyone else I thought was worthy of participating with a possible chance of winning.” Perhaps not everyone, but certainly anyone who looked strong that was not registered.

“Sir,” Karothdra said politely in greeting before turning to the Shifter girl as she spoke up. It was interesting to see the interaction, the man obviously didn’t want his daughter anywhere near the fighting ring and yet he couldn’t see how much of a fighter she was.

“I will do my best,” She gave the pair a small smile. “We should hurry now before the line closes,” turning to the merchant again she added. “It was nice meeting you, I assure you, your daughter is in good hands.”

Turning, Karothdra started towards the line so they could get a place. “I’m Karothdra by the way,” she held out her hand to the Shifter once she’d caught up to her.

Dris'rynne wasn't entirely used to having her skills complimented, especially not before someone had actually seen her in action. It was rather gratifying, and wholly undeserved. What if she were to enter this tournament, and be knocked out in the first round? Would this Oban still say those bolstering phrases then?

She turned to look at her father, since he had yet to give an official 'yes'. He seemed tied, but finally he simply nodded his head with a little smile that read 'what can I do?' "Be careful, Rynni."

Dris'rynne moved as if she were simply going to pick up her swords, but slipped in a quick hug for the man before scurrying after the oban girl. It didn't take her nearly as long to strap them to her hip as it may have at an earlier point in this trip, but she wasn't nearly as much of a novice now. She reached for the offered hand, and shook it firmly, "Dris'rynne."

The shortened line closed ranks, and it didn't seem like it was long at all before they were at the front. A burly registrar looked up from his ledgers, completely passing Dris'rynne up entirely to look straight at Karo, "You're already signed up."

“Nice to meet you Dris’rynne, can I call you Dris?” Dris felt easier on Karothdra’s tongue but she always asked before simply spurting out some sort of nickname for anyone.

The line slowly dwindled until they were at the front of it. Karothdra was used to be the first people looked to when they spoke, even more so if she was standing by a Shifter but she still felt bad for Dris.

“I know, you’re going to sign her up,” the Oban gestured to Dris. Karothdra did not ask, she gave out the order. She didn’t want to leave any doubt in this man’s mind to doubt her. Stillt he man did turn to look and inspect Dris’rynne before handing her the sheet of paper for her to sign up. Karo kept her eyes on him daring him to say something out loud. Once Dris was done, the man took the paper and stacked it with the others and gave a bob of his head to Karothdra.

“Alright looks like you’re all signed up.” Karo move doubt of the line to let the others pass however the Obans voice boomed and told the rest they were closed for registrations. “Do you know where you’re going from here?” As they talked, she was moving in to the arena and turning into the halls only used by the fighters. There was a waiting area where all the warriors were staying.

"Most usually do." She quirked her pert little mouth into a grin. Her name was a mouthful, and Dris certainly didn't begrudge anyone for trying to shorten it.

To say she was impressed by Karo's attitude would have been an understatement. She'd already known the other woman possessed a solid backbone, but it was a constant, although pleasant, surprise to see it working out in her favor. Dris'rynne didn't let that show though, at least not for the registrar. She tried not to let him have the satisfaction of knowing he'd annoyed her by filling out her paperwork as quickly as possible and shuffling after Karo.

"Work wise? I'm not sure. I would say it all depends on what I can manage in the ring." She moved past men waiting with broad swords and chain scythes, women with their teeth sharpened into points and a few, very few, clean cut Obans. "What are your plans?"

Another loud voice announced that matches were being set up, and that spectators should take their seats. It was unnerving, to say the least, to hear that voice so loud it jarred her bones.

Karothdra paused briefly when she heard the announcement go off. So it had begun. Kaorthdra continued to lead the way as they headed out into the ring where the others were currently waiting for their match ups.

“I plan on beating my brother to inches of his life,” she’d said it half jokingly with a small at Dris. She wasn’t completely kidding, she’d come here with the intentions of humiliating her brother in front of everyone. “My brother likes to think that he will be replacing my father in his position of general, but I plan from pulling that rug from under him.” Today wouldn’t be a major victory but every single battle they fought and she won still mattered to some point. She would show him to be unfit for leading the Oban army as one of its great generals.

The announcer spoke again once everyone had entered into the arena and the names began appearing on the board. Her brother’s name was quite far from her own so if he managed to make it far enough they would most likely encounter each other. On her part, Karothdra was up against another Oban who was looking like a hulking beast. She eyed the man before dismissing him. He wouldn’t be an issue; there were others she was far more worried about. A quick peek at Dris’s line up looked like she would be facing some tough opponents.

“Looks like you have some tough fights ahead of you,” Karothdra commented giving the Shifter a once over. “Think you can handle?”

A General's daughter? That certainly explained some things about Karo's bearing. While it didn't make her think any higher of the woman, neither did it detract from her general impression of the Oban. It meant her family had power. Even if her parents weren't nobility her father's status alone would have been enough to grant them a very luxurious life. And yet, Karo wasn't spoiled or cruel; her parents had raised her right.

Dris'rynne couldn't help the little laugh that slipped out. "Is he that bad?" She couldn't help wondering what this brother was like to make Karo so determined to undermine him. Was it a simple sibling rivalry over a future position, or was he truly unfit to lead? Either way, right now wasn't the time to worry about that; she had bigger concerns.

Dris'rynne skimmed over the lineup before finding her name. She looked for her first opponent and found a matorian. While he wasn't a very large man, he had the look of a killer about him that reminded her of a wild radaku. He wouldn't be easy to take down, but she wasn't overly concerned. If the man wanted to be a challenge then she would welcome the chance to test her skills.

She turned her eye back to Karo, and nodded. "I'll be fine. Just try not to get crushed by The Mountain." Karo's first opponent looked more like a large boulder than an actual man. Dris'rynne wondered if her swords would even cut through his skin or if it would just bounce off. "Which one is your brother?"

“Bad,” Karothdra scoffed and shook her head. “He’s bad at everything he does but everyone is far too busy kissing his cheeks to see that.” Sure her brother had the grooming and her father’s public approval, but she wasn’t fooled by her brother. The man was completely idiotic, didn’t even take his duties seriously until he found out Karothdra was secretly plotting against him. Not that she would have hid the fact if he’d asked her out loud but he was too cowardly for such a confrontational way. So, she said nothing even if they both knew the truth.

Karothdra turned her eyes to her opponent again when Dris said something. “Everyone ahs weak spots, you just have to find them.” Hand to hand combat was subtle like that, sometimes you cause injuries that could not be seen by the naked eye. She enjoyed those the most, they took longer to take effected by they effectively slowed down opponents. Plus, the larger they were the harder they fell. She was looking forward to this fight. “I suppose it’s a whole different ball game with actually weapons though.” She’d never enjoyed beating someone with weapons as much as with her fists.

“The little idiot over there grinning at us.” Karothdra pointed to him with her chin. He was across from them, an Oban who was slim but cut with muscle. His clothing gave away to his status, fancy and not made for fighting in Karothdra’s opinion. “If you get him, please beat him to a pulp for me, would save me a lot of trouble.” It always looked bad when she beat on him, she made him look weak and he punished her in other ways through their father. Well their father was not here today.
