“Karothdra,” her father called as she passed his study. She paused to look in.
“Yes father?”
“Come in please.” Karo stepped inside and went to stake a seat across from her father in the chair opposite of him.
“I think it’s time you stood out a bit from the crowd, don’t you think?” He sipped his water and kept his gaze on his window.
“I think I’ve marked myself apart from the crowd pretty well so far, don’t you think?”
“In terms of skill yes, perhaps. But you need to stand out more. Care to take a walk with me?”
“Of course.”
Karothdra followed her father through their home, outside into a carriage that took them to the market and then out in front of a blacksmiths.
“What are we doing here?”
“It’s about time you crafted your own gauntlets.” Taking her inside, her father presented her to the blacksmith who promptly got her equipped.
“Now you follow me and do as I do.” The burly Oban said before beginning to shape the metal.
Karothdra watched the man before turning to her father confused. He was currently taking a seat and watching her, motioning for her to continue and do what she was doing.
Her father always knew best, she wouldn’t question him on this. Karothdra turned to the fire and began working on shaping the gauntlet. Even for an Oban who was used to the heat, the forge was on a whole other level. Sweat was beading across her body and her arms ache. It took half the day but finally, finally when the metal had tempered her father came closer to inspect her work.
“This is a good start Karothdra. Now you must make it her own.” Karo laid her hand on her work; she was not a designer how was she supposed to make it her own now. The blacksmith handed her a piece of coal.
“Draw your design and then we work from there.” Karo nodded and stared at her gauntlets. She still didn’t know what to do. Finally after a few moments she began to doodle, once done the blacksmith nodded and showed her what she needed to do.
Karothdra copied his techniques once more, however as she began on the first gauntlet she broke the thing. She’d been hitting it too hard and had rendered the thing too weak. Sighing, she began working on the other gauntlet; she could always make another in the future for herself. It didn’t matter. Unfortunately, this one broke too. Karo threw the pieces to the ground frustrated until her father came and put his hand around her shoulder.
“We’ll come back tomorrow; don’t let your anger guide you.”
“I am not a blacksmith father.” Karo glanced at the other works the Oban had made. “I do not have the skill for this.”
“You will make your own tomorrow; don’t let it drag you down. Thank you Talir, we’ll be back tomorrow.” Karothdra groaned, how often would she have to return?
