It was good, seeing Chariklo up and about. It was good, to see her out of that hospital bed. If Ida has her say, she would never see one of her friends in another hospital bed as long as she lived, but there was a sad truth to it that it was simply a part of their lives as senshi and knights. Order's warriors. They got hurt a distressing amount of times, but they fought on for a day when this would all be over. It seemed like distant dream.
Ida had been silent for a while now, walking with Chari with a patrol as an excuse to see her. She was still... faintly upset with her friend over what had happened. Even though she knew it hadn't been Chari's fault and that being mad at her wasn't fair, there was still a sting to it, looking at her now. Even though how much she cared about the woman hadn't lessened, the pain was still there.
This little outing had been Ida's attempt at setting that pain to rest. Hoping time spent with her friend would make things easier, help her understand and forgive. She wanted to be supportive, she knew Chari needed that, but it was hard. Harder still when she argued with herself that she had had the same thoughts, once. Considered it the same as Chari had.
Ida drew a deep breath and let it out slowly as she lifted her head to look out over the city, trying to think of something to say that didn't seem stupid and out of place. What was wrong with her? Laney had been the good one, SHE'D been the one to speak gently. So few things ever felt right any more. Every time she tried to pull herself out, she just kept sliding back...

If she'd been asked, Chariklo wouldn't have been able to explain why she was out patrolling. Why she'd bothered to power up. Maybe it was because she felt that she owed this to her friends. They'd found her and saved her life. And even if she didn't think it was worth the effort, they had.
And Orah, bless her, had not said anything to accuse or question. Nor had Laney. Both had been amazing all things considered.
Yes, maybe that was why she'd let Ida talk her into coming out. Scratching idly at the still healing scar on her forearm, she tried to think of something to say. She didn't want to whine or become lost in a mess of half-felt apologies. And much as she loved her friends, there was still a little knife edge of resentment. They hadn't let her die. And there were times when that fact was hard to face.
After a moment, she sighed softly and reached out to grab Ida's hand and squeeze it. She was still having trouble vocalizing everything that had and continued to parade around in her brain. But something as simple as physical contact helped her to at least express something.
"I don't know why you put up with me sometimes, dear-heart," she murmured, hoping that if she could get Ida talking about the Incident, it would somehow make it easier for her too.

She felt her hand grasped and it pulled Ida to a halt, her dark, thoughtful eyes dropping away from the skyline to find the ruffles at the bottom of her friend's fuku. Her gaze slid upwards, pausing again on the cameo that nestled against her chest, before she finally forced herself to meet Chariklo's eyes. They were familiar eyes, even if the fuku was still new. Eyes she remembered from the future and the past.
The sight loosened the knot Ida felt in her chest and the angle of her shoulders eased. This was still her friend... she had to remember that.
"I put up with you because I care about you." She said softly. "I still care about you, you know."
It seemed important to reiterate that. It was hard to say why, but it felt like something she needed to do. Maybe she needed to hear the truth in it as much as Chariklo did. Despite everything, she really did still care. Even if it hurt. Even if it hurt because she cared.

Giving the hand in her own another gentle squeeze, Chariklo managed a faint smile.
"I know, but some days it's hard to remember. I try, but it's hard to ignore the little voices that tell me otherwise."
Almost reluctantly, she let go of Ida's hand, almost as if she was afraid of seeming too clingy. Blinking rapidly, she made a tiny coughing noise as she tried to swallow down the tears that were so close to the surface these days.
"I care about you too, punkin," she murmured. "And I really am sorry for being such a worry. I... probably should have tried to talk, but I was so afraid it would be like that last meeting with Mintaka or something. Like I'd look at your eyes and see someone who despised me staring back."
It was more than the shrinks at the hospital had been able to get out of her. Maybe even more than she'd told Cordy or Angus. And even saying that much scared her down into her bones.

Ida's face was solemn as Chari spoke, but it eased a little, the line smoothing out from between her brows.
This was the same woman she remembered, her friend, and she was in pain. She could see it, when she got past her own pain enough to look. It made her feel selfish and self-centered and Ida let out a soft sigh.
"You don't have to apologize for anything. Its not really your fault. You were... in a lot of pain. I know what that's like, if anyone does." She said softly.
The shine in Chariklo's eyes tugged at Ida's heart and it was hard, suddenly, to hold onto the hurt. Seeing the pain on her face... she couldn't not be affected by it. Stepping in closer, Ida brushed her fingers gently up Chari's forearms and over her sleeves, making soft soothing noises.
"I don't despise you... how could I? You were so brave, leaving the Mirror like you did. You didn't do it to hurt them... you did it because you wanted to be free. And its not like you've suddenly made yourself an enemy... you know I don't fight Dark Mirror senshi, like a lot of White moon senshi don't. We don't have to be set against each other. I'm sorry you have a hard time from them. I would help, if I could. I want to help."
She didn't know what else to say... there were no words to make everything alright again. Only time would do that and it couldn't be rushed.
"I'm just... hurt. A little bit. That you didn't trust me enough to talk to me. I mean... not that I'm anything special. Hver is a better choice, she sees things so much clearer than I do, but... I would have been there, for you. I wish I had been. I've been so caught up in myself, I feel like I should have... noticed. Or something."

Shoulders that she hadn't realized were tensed suddenly relaxed. Slumping a little in relief that her confession hadn't earned her disdain or dislike, she let Ida sooth her. Did her best to listen to what her friend was saying without throwing condemnation on herself.
"Try telling Mintaka that," she muttered with a little snort and a flash of her old, brash personality shining through for a moment. "She's convinced that I'm the worst kind of liar and traitor imaginable. Amytis and Ava talked to me just long enough to tell me I wasn't anyone they wanted in their lives. Remarque is about the only one who has not freaked out on me in some way. At this point, I'm fairly certain Tantalus thinks I'm the devil incarnate."
She tried to laugh it off, but the hurt was plain. Tears leaked out and she brushed them away irritably. The sense that she was unwanted, worthless and terrible was still there. But somehow, having Ida there listening helped to hold it back. Even if she'd managed to hurt Ida all in the name of protecting her from whatever was wrong with herself.
"'I... I," she began, trying to articulate that her withdrawal had been all for their protection and not sure how to get the words out. "I was trying to keep you safe," she finally managed, wishing that she was more eloquent.

"Sometimes people strike out when they're hurt or upset. They might not even mean the things they do or say, they just need to make others hurt because they do." She said softly, her fingers soothing as she stroked the outside of Chari's arms. "They're angry probably because they're hurt you left, and they can't see that it was what was best for you. They don't understand, and probably won't for a long time, if ever. I feel like everyone gets really stuck in their faction and just can't see why someone would want to change... I think we'd have more purification maybe, if they did. I'm sorry that it hurts. I would make it better if I could... but I'll have my fingers crossed, that time makes things better and they come around, for your sake."
The tears she saw made her chest squeeze and she reached out without thinking to cup the taller woman's cheek, gently brushing with her thumb as Chari wiped them away herself. Her anger had faded, as had the hurt, and now all she could feel was protectiveness. A need to make everything better and the pain she saw. This outing had been the right idea, she realized. She'd needed to remember this was her friend and that she loved her. It had done that, thankfully.
"There isn't anything you need to protect me from here, especially not yourself, Chari. You wouldn't hurt me, not intentionally. And..." Ida shifted, her lips pressed together for a moment as she stroked her friend's cheek again. "I want to protect you. I want to help you. I just... need you to let me."

Freezing a little, Chariklo found herself wondering when their roles had become so reversed. It should have been her offering comforting words and soothing reassurance. Still, she didn't try to argue or fight it. Closing her eyes for a moments, she actually leaned a little into Ida's hand.
And then remembered that was a lot taller than her friend and making her reach up like this probably was a little mean.
Catching Ida's hand, Chariklo held it against her cheek for a second longer before gently moving it and leaning over just enough to brush her lips against Ida's forehead.
"We're friends," she said simply. "Friends should protect each other, I think. And I'll try harder to not lock you or Hver or anyone out like that again."
Left unsaid was how terribly fragile Chariklo was emotionally and that it wouldn't be easy to let people back in with the same ease she had before she'd purified. But she was determined to try her best and hope it would be enough for now.

It felt good, to do this. She liked how it felt when Chari leaned into her hand and she liked it when the taller woman wrapped her fingers around hers. As she leaned in, for just a moment, Ida wished... and then lips were pressed to her forehead and she smiled gently, lashes lowered.
"As long as you try, that's all I ask." She agreed. Shifting, she slipped her arm around Chari's and turned them both to take up the path they had been walking before. They still had a patrol to complete, even if it ended up being more of a long walk than an actual patrol. Baby steps were okay. They didn't have to jump both feet back into active senshi duty after Chari's stay in the hospital, but it was good to start easing into it. It was good for her too, to spend more time with the people she cared about. That connection was so much of what she felt was helping her own mental recovery, bit by slow, agonizing bit.
The whole situation struck her suddenly and she wondered at it. Not so long ago, she had been the one crying into Chari's arms. She'd come so far since then... from the woman who had cried in the woods while Hver held her. It was not all the way, but it was a good bit of it.
"Next time you're having it hard, you should call me." She said as they walked. "We don't have to talk or do anything if you don't want to, but I always feel better just... having someone around that I know cares about me. We can do a hang out or a sleep over or something, and I'll just keep you company for a while. Its better not to be alone, I think."

Somewhere in the city, another troubled soul sat poised over a letter. Two dark, tormented eyes stared down at the words scrawled too-neatly across the page, as if the man would find salvation between the lines. There had to be some other way than this, there must have been some other option still unseen. Yet try as he might to find another solution to his problem, there was no other out than the one that had been demanded. Gehenna closed his dark eyes and the image of the broken doll rose unbidden in his thoughts, grinning down at him with a hunger he'd never seen on a human face. Then Isaiah's face rose next to it and the acrid smell of smoke and burning seemed so real that he clenched his teeth around a gag. There were others whose fate hung on this one decision. Ida should have been among those he wanted to keep safe, but over the last few days a cold, chilling realization hit him - he couldn't save them all. The bile rose in his throat as he stared down at the page. Whimsical Blue Ida, Can you meet me at the old show house where we sparred? It's an emergency, someone is in danger and I can't help them alone this time. I can't explain everything in a message, but please hurry. I need your help. Gehenna It wasn't a lie, but it wasn't the truth. As he raised his hand and pressed his ink-stained sigil into the bottom of the delicate paper, he though he might well and truly be sick. Just as it disappeared into the air, a jolt in his stomach made him reach for it with his other hand, trying to grab it before it went on its path. There was no turning back now, but had he really had that choice at all?

There was a strange feeling, like someone calling her, that pulled Ida up short in their walk. Curious, the young woman concentrated on that feeling and in a moment, a piece of paper appeared out of the air. Ida grabbed at it as it fell, eyebrows lifting at the scrawl across the page.
The note was short, but urgent, and the name at the bottom...
"Chari, I need to go, one of my friends needs me." She said as she lowered the letter, giving the taller woman's arm a squeeze before she released it. "Will you be okay making it back to your place alone? I'm sorry to dip out on you like this, I really did mean to make it a whole patrol, just the two of us."
It was odd, getting a note from Gehenna. He'd never messaged her before, or ever asked for help. But maybe this was a sign that he was reaching out, finally. Looking for support. He had been so down, like she had been... if he needed help, she couldn't deny it to him. If anything... it was kind of warming, to be the one he called for. Hopefully she could be strong enough for what he needed... and if not, there were more people she could ask to help.

Chariklo figured that by now, she'd seen a fair few odd things happen. But watching a bit of paper suddenly pop into existence was something entirely new to her.
"That's handy trick," she said rather than the petulant sounding I need you too that was her first (and thankfully throttled down) reaction. "Which of your friends can do that? And I'll be okay, I promise. I'll call Laney or Angus or Cordy if I start feeling too lonely and twitchy."
Managing a slight smile, she wrapped one arm around Ida's shoulders and pulled her into a hug before letting go.
"Give me a call when you're finished so I know you got home all right. Or if you need back up or anything, yeah?"
She wanted to say more, wanted to cling and be selfish, but that wasn't fair to Ida or this unknown friend. So, instead, she took a step back, kept the smile on her face and gave her friend a tiny salute.

Ida turned to her friend as she lowered the paper, hugging the arm she held.
"Gehenna. He's a squire of Mars that I met a while ago, just before the memories of the future. We've sparred together before, and he's a good guy." She said, before the taller woman wrapped her in a hug. She slid her arms around her and hugged her tightly back, burying her face into the snowy white ruffles over her shoulder.
Despite everything, this she was glad of. Chari was finally free of the taint of chaos, free to be her own senshi. Change was hard, and painful, but she was determined to be there for her now and help her through it.
"I promise, I'll call you when I get home. I'd like to hang out again. Between me and Gehenna, I'm sure we can handle anything. But I'll call if we can't, don't worry." She let her hand slide down her arm before she released her and waved gently, offering a smile before she turned to go.
......
The trip across town didn't take terribly long, not when you had an eternal's speed. Anticipation had her keyed up, but focused by the time she reached the show home. The area was dark, lit only by street lights. The house itself was dark, its windows stark and staring.
Ida opened her senses as she drew close, searching for the familiar Squire's signature, and any others that might be nearby. Was he going to take her to his friend? And what exactly had happened that he needed her help with? It was hard to imagine what needed her specifically, unless he just... had no one else to call. It was a saddening thought, but it probably wasn't uncommon. Order had never been good at banding together.
"Gehenna?" She called as her gold heels touched down on the roof top. Ida remembered the last time she'd been here... too scared to power up while she was alone, still reeling from the events she remembered and mourning the deaths that hadn't really happened. It was a mark of how far she had come, that she could stand here now and feel so much closer to her old self.

The Squire felt her before he heard her and he moved through the empty show house with its too-neat arrangements and coordinated decor. It looked as hollow as he felt. One hand reached out and grabbed the knob on the back door, wrenching it open so he could walk outside. Somewhere above him, he heard her voice, and for a moment he considered not answering her. The stark reality of what he was about to do seemed too real when he heard her - innocent, caring Ida - and his eyes shut against the dimly lit back yard with its neatly trimmed hedges. Inside the house he could hear the woman stirring, her energy muted by the glamour she had pulled over herself, tucked into one of the back bedrooms. She had arrived not long before Ida and her presence was enough of a threat to make him open his eyes again and take a step forward. It was Ida, or everyone else that he cared about. One sacrifice for the mass. "Down here," he called, in a voice he hoped wasn't strained, "she's.. she's in the house. I can't take her to the hospital." The trembling in his voice could have simply been concern, or worry, over a friend.

The voice from below called Ida down from the roof and she landed lightly on the ground by the door. Gehenna was a large, solid shadow with small points of light dangling from his belt. It wasn't enough to read his face, not really, but the tension in his body and voice were expected.
His words explained what she needed to know; someone was hurt. That's why he'd called her, over other people who arguably could have been as helpful as her. Injury called for someone with some measure of ability to treat it and she had that, at least. The young senshi's concern shifted and focused, her manner settling into 'nurse mode'. First thing was first, she needed to see what she was dealing with and meet her patient, then she could decide on a course of action.
"I wish you'd brought her to my apartment. If you'd told me about an injury I could have packed up some supplies. I'm afraid I only have the very basic stuff in my school bag." She said as she headed for the doorway. Reaching out, she squeezed Ghen's arm comfortingly and offered a smile before she brushed past him, pushing the door open to step inside the empty house. Ida figured she'd have to power down in a moment to get the emergency supplies, but she wanted to locate the other woman first. "Is she in one of the rooms, Ghen? If there's blood we're going to have to be careful about clean up afterwards... I don't know how often they use these show homes."
